Based on how fast Villy responded, the snake god had definitely expected Jake to reach out sooner rather than later. When the connection was formed, Jake didn’t say anything right away, but just sat there awkwardly for a moment before muttering:

“So...”

“So indeed,” the Viper responded, sounding casual as always.

Jake sighed and shook his head. “I should start out by thanking you. If you hadn’t predicted this would happen, things wouldn’t have ended well.”

“Well, having known you as long as I have, you are indeed pretty predictable in some things. However, more than you being predictable, those natives are. I’ve dealt with scenarios like this more times than I bother to remember, and the outcome is often the same. I did tell you how I would have handled things for a reason, back then.”

“Yeah, I should have listened and just bailed when I had the chance,” Jake sighed. When he’d left with those five Arachnecs and five Venusians beyond the Boundary, he had the opportunity to escape. He could have simply gone to Earth or visited the moon, where Arnold resided. However, he’d foolishly believed he was doing well diplomatically and could make friends with everyone, which he evidently couldn’t. Though funnily enough, he did manage to make all the factions more friendly toward each other, especially now that the fear of the Great Sea Serpent was present.

“That would have been the smart choice, but I’d never expect you to make the smart choice. If you did, you would be a very boring Chosen,” Villy said in a joking tone. “Not to say this shouldn’t be a learning experience for you. Which begs the question, what did you learn?”

“To keep my mouth shut and not share information without properly thinking things over,” Jake sighed, shaking his head. “Especially not in a world like this, where I’m entirely on my own. Well, not entirely on my own, as if I were, I would have been fucked.”

“A fine lesson, I guess, but not really the most important takeaway,” the snake god said in a slightly disapproving voice. “You’re close, though.”

Jake frowned a bit as he considered what the snake god had said. After a few seconds of thinking, he realized what the Primordial was getting at. “That I was too weak to truly explore this Minor World in the first place when I don’t have the backing of the Order available.”

“Closer. Good enough, I guess,” the snake god said, sounding like he couldn’t expect more from Jake. “Plans and schemes are good. They can give you an advantage. Manipulation and deceit are the same, but they are ultimately just auxiliary tools. Ultimately, the most important thing is power, and I do understand that, due to your Bloodline and whatnot, you missed something very important: you are a lesser being who should not be treated as an equal in their eyes. You treat them as equals, but they never saw you as such.”

Jake instinctively wanted to protest, as he didn’t even like to imagine being treated as an inherently inferior being, but he knew that he couldn’t argue against it. The attitudes of the many A-grades at the Boundary had been polite, yes, but they had all just seen Jake for what he could provide, not as a person. Something he’d already realized back then. If he hadn’t come with the ability to bring them beyond the Boundary, they wouldn’t even have bothered talking to him. Moreover, if he hadn’t at least said he came from a major faction from the multiverse, they would have likely been entirely okay forcing him into a far worse Soul Contract.

“In the multiverse, you are treated with respect because you’re my Chosen, and in some cases because of what you can provide as the Harbinger of Primeval Origins. However, have no doubt that without my backing, you would find yourself in a very difficult situation due to all the factions wanting something from you. The Bloodline Accords would stop them from going too far, but they could still pressure you in other ways that teeter on the line of breaking the Accords. Of course, I don’t doubt you could find strong backing even if it wasn’t with me, but have no doubt that you would need this backing. If not, most A-grades would gladly treat you worse than the natives of this Minor World, who still showed caution due to the mystery of the multiverse lurking as a threat behind your existence.”

More uncomfortable truths that Jake couldn’t in good faith argue against.

“You’ve seen quite a few of my own adventures of the past, right?” the Viper followed up, taking a slightly more casual tone. “Do recall my approach. I often resorted to deceit and tricked others, but in every instance, I always had the power to handle the situation or at least flee if things turned south. Unlike you, I didn’t have any backing and could only rely on myself. In this Minor World, you are in a similar scenario. In other words... You should never have gotten involved with this world in the first place.”

“Yeah,” Jake muttered and let out a loud sigh. “You’re probably right. It was incredibly risky for no real gain.”

If Jake had wanted to grind levels, he could have done it in so many other places that weren’t sealed off Minor Worlds with ignorant natives that he didn’t at all understand, who also happened to be far more powerful than himself.

“Finally, and this might seem a bit contradictory, I wouldn’t be too hard on myself if I were you, nor would I dwell on this matter much,” Villy said, surprising Jake a little. “You suck at schemes. You suck at tricking and manipulating others socially. Sure, you can do it a little, but it’s definitely not your forte. While this may appear to be a weakness, I wouldn’t view it that way. You are simply not that kind of person, and becoming someone who gets ahead through schemes and deceit would go against your Path. There is power in recognizing who you are and embracing it, rather than trying to rid yourself of all perceived weaknesses. Your instinctual mindset, impulsive approaches, and reliance on intuition run counter to being a schemer, yet they are also among your greatest assets. In summary, do not change yourself into becoming something you are not.”

Jake silently listened as his Patron gave him some actual advice regarding his Path, and he wasn’t quite sure how to take it. A part of him found it natural to want to improve and rid himself of any obvious shortcomings, but he also knew that the Viper definitely had a point. Jake’s approach had always been to keep things simple and take complications as they came, and trying to be a scheming planner who made contingencies for whatever could go wrong simply didn’t fit who he was as a person.

After a bit, Jake let out yet another sigh and nodded. “You’re definitely right. It does feel a little wrong knowing that others will have to make up for my shortcomings, though.”

“If they didn’t, their Paths would be empty, and I’m sure that witch of yours prefers getting work from you, despite often thinking otherwise,” Villy said, back to being in a more joking mood. “Besides, you also make up for their shortcomings, and by the time you reach the peak of power, could your lack of scheming really be considered a downside? Just crush whoever dares to scheme against you.”

“That’s gonna take a while, though,” Jake chuckled.

“Fortunately for you, you have plenty of time,” the snake god said. “Anyhow, I’ll leave you to your matters once more. One final thing, though. Consider returning to the Order before your involvement in the Seat of the Exalted Prima event begins. Not for anything specific, but simply because having an absolutely safe point of return eliminates many potential dangers.”

“I was planning on making a teleportation circle,” Jake confirmed with a nod. “Should I inform the Great Sea Serpent about my plans?”

“Do as you will. The serpent strikes me as very useful and should prove solid help while within this Minor World. Once outside, I also believe he will be able to instantly evolve to S-grade and become a fairly powerful variant. Reaching his level of power within a sealed-off Minor World with limited Records couldn’t have been easy, so he’s rather talented,” the Viper said. “See you soonish, but no need to rush back. Enjoy your future vacation world a bit first!”

With those words, the Viper severed the connection, leaving Jake alone in the slightly damp cavern once more. He took the next couple of hours to mentally refresh before he got to work on putting down a magic circle capable of bringing him to the Order of the Malefic Viper. Still with the help of Villy, of course.

Creating the circle ended up taking about three days, the process being a bit different from usual, as Jake had to modify his existing knowledge to make up for him now being B-grade. He had to make it stronger on his end, which took more materials. Fortunately, Jake was a bit of a hoarder and had everything he needed.

With the teleportation circle down, Jake felt a lot more comfortable. It meant that with less than a dozen seconds’ notice, he could leave the entire Minor World through the void. Hopefully, he wouldn’t need to escape but simply leave when it was about time to do the Seat of the Exalted Prima system event.

For now, he wanted to do something else, though. Since gaining the skill, Jake had neglected getting a proper meditation session in, and given the circumstances, this seemed like the perfect time. Perfect environment, too.

He could peer at the Gate of Enlightenment while his body could refine the surrounding toxins using Palate, strengthening the skill and granting him Records. Perhaps he could even use the absorbed Records to inspire him before the Gate of Enlightenment, but only time would tell.

Sitting down in the center of the teleportation circle, Jake checked one final time that it was ready to be activated at any point before closing his eyes and allowing his consciousness to drift into deep meditation.

He appeared in his Soulspace and quickly made his way towards the Gate of Enlightenment from there, already feeling that the journey was far easier now that he was B-grade compared to before. The experience was still overwhelming, as even B-grades were not meant to interact with the Gate, but if Jake could manage in C-grade, so could he manage now.

Standing in front of the Gate of Enlightenment, Jake felt his mind wander as he focused on the myriad concepts faintly leaking from the gate, letting his instincts and intuition guide him rather than taking a pre-planned approach. As he’d just talked about with Villy before, Jake wasn’t the calculating type, so why bother thinking too much when his guts were a far superior guide?

The first part of the Administrator Test had been a sped-up version of the Tutorial. Miranda had passed that stage quite smoothly, primarily due to her party members being competent – William especially – which had naturally made her believe that the second part of the test would be related to what happened shortly after returning to Earth.

That was not the case.

Instead, the second stage had brought Miranda and company to an entirely new place that none of them recognized. What’s more, rather than being at a lower level or with restricted skills, they all appeared in their true forms, making it doubtful if it was even another simulation or perhaps a new world created by the system for this particular system event.

However, given that the original system message regarding the event stated the test would take place in a simulated reality, Miranda assumed the second level would do the same.

“I see something in the distance,” Holstred said, looking into the horizon from the small hilltop they’d appeared on.

Before he could say anything more, the system message telling them their objective appeared.

Administrator Test is continuing. Stage two: Starting Anew.

Objective: Consider the circumstances of the Unnamed City and take whatever actions you deem necessary. This stage will last for thirty (30) days.

“I guess that’s the unnamed city you’re seeing,” Miranda commented, not able to actually see what Holstred was talking about herself.

Regarding the objective, it was vague to say the least. Beating the Tutorial was a simple goal, but this time around, there was nothing definitive telling them what to do. Which didn’t help when one considered that this was an Administrator Test, where no one knew what they were even being tested on.

“What’s the plan?” the frost wyvern asked as he squinted, also trying to see the city that it was clear only Holstred could see. And maybe William, but Miranda doubted he necessarily used his eyes to perceive its location.

“We approach the city,” Miranda said, seeing nothing else to do before turning to William. “Can you go ahead and scout it out before we go any closer? I would like to know what we’re walking into.”

William nodded. “Alright, I’ll be back as soon as possible.”

With that, he jumped off the hill and shot into the distance, disappearing from sight soon after as he activated his stealth skills. As for Miranda, she sat down and was joined by Lillian, who took out some refreshments. Holstred and the wyvern also soon sat down, as they would stay put and wait for William to return.

The point of appearance in system events tended to be safe zones, and not knowing what was up with this Unnamed City, it was safest for them not to all approach it as a group. William had the highest chance of making it away if it happened to be inhabited by powerful beings. Should William face a perilous situation and die, it would only be a simulation and wouldn’t mean any real loss. The only person who had to survive was Miranda, after all.

Was this overly cautious? Perhaps, but the system message still struck Miranda as weird. It told them to consider the circumstances of the city and then take action, and wasn’t it entirely possible that those circumstances were that it was filled with B-grades far more powerful than their party?

In the end, her caution proved unnecessary, as William returned with a surprising discovery.

“I didn’t detect a single presence above D-grade,” he said, frowning a little. “However, there are formations in the city that I doubt even C-grades could have made. I would say it’s a safe assumption that there are B-grades involved with the city; there just aren’t any of them there right now.”

“Yet no C-grades?” Miranda asked, perplexed. “Anything else of note?”

“It’s a shithole,” William said very curtly. “Lots of negative karma floating about. Whoever is in charge isn’t very popular, and the citizens aren’t happy.”

“I see,” Miranda muttered, having quickly gotten an idea of what kind of place this was. “A city in disarray, ruled either by someone incompetent or malicious, with us having the option of stepping in and taking action to propel change.”

“How will the system judge whether whatever approach we decide on is the right one, though?” Lillian asked. “What would someone worthy of being an Administrator do?”

Miranda considered it for a while before looking towards the city again. “I guess we’ll find out. For now, let’s head there and decide after a careful investigation.”

A couple of days later, after having covertly investigated the Unnamed City and gotten familiar with the frankly dystopian metropolis, Miranda reached a conclusion. The city, which was reminiscent of a world undergoing the industrial revolution without any workers’ rights, truly was a horrid place, with the citizens discontent and the leader incompetent, which was probably why Miranda’s answer to the objective was surprising:

She decided to leave the city and spend the remaining weeks of this Administrator Test stage far away from everything, getting more familiar with her skills as a B-grade, joined by the other four who did the same.

From beginning to end, they never truly interacted with the city, but instead ignored its existence, as Miranda had concluded that dealing with it was an utter waste of time. Her chosen action had been inaction, as in the end... wasn’t doing anything besides focusing on personal progress an utter waste of time given where they were?

djthomp

Isolated away from all possible enemies while protected by big snake does sound like a relatively safe place to take a look at the gate. Maybe Jake will get something topically themed to Venus out of the meditation session. I've been wondering if it was about time to check back in with Miranda and see how the system event was going.

definitelynotbrjenness

Not this time. There were dragon footprints outside my windows. Zog obviously had one of his bodyguards recording me excitedly grabbing my tablet and refreshing twenty times. He was probably laughing his malefic ass off.

Wonder if this was the right choice by Miranda or if she'll get disqualified for not Administrating in the Administrator test.

lmao, is kinda funny the aproach miranda took, but perhaps for the best, sometimes trying to fix something it can cause more harm than good and wait for the expected revolt will likely happen to take any kind of action.... if they even bother to even do anything about it

Huh...for some reason, I was thinking Lillian didn't go with Miranda. I should never trust my memory. Just go with the craziest thing I can think of.

Minor world domination = a new vacation joint. Welcome to Toxin Resort Venus (Named by Jake). Wonder if they do skiing here.

Thank u for the story

Miranda freaking about Jake killing the psychos to Miranda completely ignoring perils of an entire city to work on herself? Damn.

Episode 19

“You suck schemes" is this Villy's version of "You suck balls" or something, cause if so, I need more Villy-converted phrases also tyftc

Rahsheem Reid

Just hear me out. What if by being a chosen they could bring beings that are also blessed (my head cannon to bring big snek and walk down the whole event. I also had a idea that Jake and others more than qualified will get summoned later in a galaxy setting where Jake would immediately gain control then go to a bigger seething against all those who made it there… just my head cannon tho and I CAN NOT WAIT!!!! Tftc!!

Eden

Think its also, the fact that all these tests are also supposed to promote growth, but trying to fix a shithole that doesnt even exist, is a waste of time and smarter to use time wisely and just train

Eden

Nah, all these tests seem to have an aspect of growth to them, she made the call that theres mothing to be gained by taking over a shithole that frankly isnt their responsibility and wont benefit them. Self improvement is a better use of time.

Xerecs

Finally some sort of event update even with it being uneventful at least we know something more about it.

Tomer Yud

huh? im confused by the ending. An Administer test should test administration skills lol

Joken

Nahhhh, a good leader/ admin knows when to not take action. Some things are not worth an investment. The cost and time efforts are too high and get any noteworthy benefit.

Mitha

I was fully expecting they would take it over and make it a better place. Which sounds like something an administrator would do.

Frosgods

Two ways to fail this test would be make things worse or just sit and do nothing as in watch and don't do anything to progress, what Miranda did falls somewhere in grey area

Josie

So you're telling me Jake knows the exact moment the Serpent is going to evolve to S grade? He's got an A grade Harbinger project already locked in 👍

TheRomanGeneral

Depends on what their Administering. So far anything to do with the Exalted Prima seems to focus on an individuals path.

Rob Lyon

If you think about it in multiversal terms why would she bother she's what peak C grade or New B grade I can't remember if she's evolved yet. But either way why would they waste their time administrating D grades. Think about all of the times in this arc or hell the entire series for that matter where it's been mentioned that people don't really care about others below their grade unless they're useful I mean mite makes right was kind of a big part of the viper's speech in this chapter and has been brought up numerous times throughout the series. So unless the exalted prima goes against the system norms why would it punish them for this?

Zach138

With only 30 days, nope. I think they did the right thing. For the city to improve, those in power who use the situation to their own gain would need to be removed. That would leave a massive power vacuum, resulting in complete chaos and citywide collapse. Short of mind-controlling the entire population, locating and grooming potential leaders, creating new laws, and enforcing them would take months, if not years.

Zizawah

Likely would take more than thirty days they were given to make any difference, may be? But agreed that it’s weird not to actually govern.

Rob Lyon

If the city was full of people equal to their grades I would agree with you But why would they waste their time with a bunch of weaker D grades

Rob Lyon

Also remember the city is full of D grades so why would they waste their time on lesser beings

Rob Lyon

Yeah we definitely need a chapter or hell at this point an entire arc of Jake just doing spring cleanings and getting rid of or using a bunch of stuff out of his spatial storage

GenZVall

You know, I’m starting to wonder if Miranda’s choice was depicted like this to show how she made the right “choice” compared to what Jake did at Venus. Were this not a system event where she had to stay until the time was up, she likely would’ve dipped out of the city considering the potential for B-Grades and above being present.

Rob Lyon

I didn't know you watched freaky shit like that

Rob Lyon

But why would someone at their grade waste their time administrating d grades.

Richard Lee

if im holding a match, and its burned down so far im about to toss it so it doesnt burn my fingers, do you think i care about the efficiency with which it burns while it falls to the floor where it will be snuffed out immediately? not everything is worth saving. somethings are truly just trash you should ignore.

Corvid

"that city isn't even half as bad as any of Jake's messes, which means they aren't worth enough class experience to bother. Instead imma go learn to make giant exploding frogs instead of small ones." -Miranda

Ray Light

You suck at scheming would fit better imho

CocoaBleu

So, Miranda choosing not to attempt to fix up the city is probably a good call. For one thing, they only have 30 days and William said that there were only D grades but B grade formations in the city… so possibly a trap to make them waste their time. Plus, what if the real test is to see how she handles leading her own people and how they follow directions and stay as a cohesive unit.

UNKNOWN

No PowerPoint slides. Sad.

Clint

Or their style… Jake is a hands-off administrator, focused on just getting stronger, and that’s okay. And he seems to be rubbing off on Miranda!

Patty O’Cartnoy

That was my thinking too - but someone else commented that all the other Prima stuff has been about individual Paths. So maybe Miranda chose correctly

Vega

S-Grade Dragon evolution? Shame that Jake wouldn’t be able to help though, would be wicked to see a Jake Juice-enhanced dragon evolution.

ABTelford

Wow, I’m surprised at Miranda’s decision. Huh. This’ll be interesting. Also, I was disappointed with the talk between Jake and Villy, it was all business and no fun. Boohoo. 😉. Makes sense though. Thanks for the chapter!

Late Night Decaf

Especially because the Serpent is only likely to come out once Jake has reached a similar level of strength- exactly when such a ritual would make the most sense.

Vega

Wondering about this myself. Perhaps it’s because 30 days might not be enough time to create lasting change. Especially in a city where most people have negative karma. ROI wouldn’t be great either. Hopefully an explanation will be forthcoming in tomorrow’s chapter.

Dan

Would you look at that, Jake may very well get to pump the Serpent full of his juice for an evolution after all once he's ready to bring him out

Yiskah

Administrators at B grade don’t involve themselves with random D grade cities. They focus on personal power so they are strong enough to take control away from shitty B grade admins and fix the D grade shithole by putting the right C grades in charge.

definitelynotbrjenness

from my experience, an administrator would come in and give a speech about how they were going to fix the peasants starting with their attitudes, disappear after three days, and report all the problems are caused by inappropriate head gear and footwear and personal items in the workplace

Seen Death

Inaction is an action I think whatever her instincts said, were correct though I forget what class she just took, but if it was "mistress of jake" or whatever, her path being related to jake, and this city having nothing to do with jake (or potential to benefit him) makes the city effectively worthless to her Instead she decided to get stronger- which will bring benefits, even for jake Not sure if that was her understanding but just a guess of mine

Rob Lyon

I mean I get what you're saying but it does show how much the Viper truly cares about Jake. This is one of those learnable teaching moments. The Viper basically looked at him and said you know you f***** up right.

definitelynotbrjenness

possibly the best option would be to find a few high potential people and help them find their path.

Rob Lyon

I can only imagine one of them pisses her off and she summons a small storm of raining frogs just a mess with it

Rob Lyon

Only if Jake hits A grade before the The sea serpent is ready to exit

definitelynotbrjenness

zog is highlighting Miranda's role and abilities as an administrator who is skilled at making the best of the hand she is dealt vs a visionary leader who would say,"this sucks. let's try to fix it by..."

beeve

And zog said that won’t happen anytime soon.. so maybe 2 years

definitelynotbrjenness

my ivy league education taught me that lesser beings should be manipulated into believing i am looking out for their best interests and give them just enough to make them dependent on me for their survival. if they manage to pull themselves up a little by their bootstraps, they should be taxed into oblivion to support things that can funnel the money into the hands of us greater beings where it can be put to better use.

David

I love how Zog used this arc for Jake's personal growth in how he deals with new groups of people!

Frosgods

Also depending how far they separated from city just aftereffects of skill training could give citizens kick in ass they needed to make changes

Fdrugc

The system may have been judging bacted on how it reflects their path.

Hornbach

Is that possible? I thought going from C to B grade was your only shot at becoming a true dragon. Wich is why so few dragonkin ect make it. Not enough time to accumulate records.

Josie

I'm curious how Villy's wife convinced Nature's Attendant that her relationship with THE Bad Boy of the multiverse was real and not manipulated. Like did the lovebirds have an interesting dating phase? Her: "But daddy, I love him" NA: 😬

Lemonsqueezy

it will be way longer than two years. We are probably looking at at least 100 if not more. Jake took about 70 years (50 in Nevermore alone) to reach B-Grade. It is to be expected that it would take even longer to reach A-Grade. Then you have to factor in the power restriction where he can only bring someone out that he is more powerful than. So I would expect mid to late A=Grade before it happens, so probably 1000+ years. I am sure the rules of the 93rd will have drastically changed by that time and will probably be fully opened up to the rest of the multiverse. This could cause the system to drop the boundary completely and Jake will not be required. It would be fitting because once the 93rd does open Jake can have his powerful allies from the Order there to manage the integration of the minor world. I think at one point it was hinted that SoTEP is the last System event for the 93rd and could be the final factor to remove all restrictions on it.

Dan

He meant 2 years in real life, not 2 years of Jake's life lol

Lemonsqueezy

Pretty sure that is the case, the point where you become a True Dragon is at B-Grade, but I also think that you had to already be on the path to become one. Villy isn't even a true dragon, he is a Viper. GSS is also snakekin so would remain a serpent and never be a dragon. He could have dragon like abilities or even looks if the system gave him the option after evolution, but he would only be Dragonkin like Draskil.

Kota

May have been the right call for Miranda but not for others. As in, inaction fits her own path here, whereas someone like Jacob would be obligated to step in. Doesn't mean Miranda couldn't have done better, only that there may not be a single right answer here.

Lemonsqueezy

Now that I think about it is a definitely 180 to how Jake handled the situation. It shows a difference in their paths. Miranda is on a political and administrative path while Jake is not.

Lemonsqueezy

Well it can be assumed because the quest GSS got in order to evolve was to leave the boundary. So I expect that once he does so he will immediately be able to evolve to S-Grade.

Lemonsqueezy

It really comes down, at least to me, that Miranda deemed the city unsavable. It will likely fall on its own either through a revolution or the city dying out completely. **EDIT** - All below was based on my incorrect understanding of this chapter. There is no one above D-Grade in the city. I do not hide my mistakes though. It seems like the B-Grade in charge decided to kill off all of his C-Grades to prevent the chance of anyone being able to physically remove him from power. Jake would have definitely gone in and killed the B-Grade. Miranda just looked at the situation and deemed it a lost cause and not worth her time or safety. I am sure this B-Grade is probably more powerful that she or here team are.

GenZVall

I’m guessing the contrast was an intentional move by Zogarth, and if so, I give him props!

Lemonsqueezy

I am sure this is what we are going to get when it comes to Miranda's trial. Just half chapters on what is going on or summaries of what happened. As important as Miranda is to the story when it comes to Jake's empire, she is still a secondary character. So it is to be expected that we won't get into a lot of detail about her life unless is explicitly involves Jake.

Lemonsqueezy

Doing it though would just completely destroy any conflict Jake would have in the 93rd. He would have an S-Grade subordinate in the 93rd while no one else could. He would be on easy street for a very long time, and that would just be boring to read. If Zog did that he would have to fully open up the 93rd to the multiverse for things to be balanced, which the System tends to stick with.

Lemonsqueezy

**EDIT** - This comment was based on my incorrect understanding of this chapter. There is no one above D-Grade in the city. I do not hide my mistakes though. So look at the scenario. There is a B-Grade that is over a lot of D-Grades. There are no C-Grades, which probably means the B-Grade killed them all to prevent any chance of being removed from power. This would lead you to believe that this B-Grade is probably quite powerful. Miranda intervening would require her to probably kill the dude. This would make it where her or a member of her team were killed and removed from the trial, or they could be severely injured endangering the future trials. So why bother? It would take longer than 30 days to do it diplomatically, so you have to do it by force and then spend time setting up the city to manage itself. What she did here is the exact opposite of what Jake did on Venus, which almost got him killed or enslaved.

Lemonsqueezy

**EDIT** - A lot of what is below was based on my incorrect understanding of this chapter. There is no one above D-Grade in the city. I do not hide my mistakes though. What Miranda did is the exact opposite of what Jake did on Venus, and look where that almost lead to. The B-Grade is definitely more powerful that Miranda's group, because I think he killed all the C-Grades in the city. So why take the chance on fighting him and getting injured or removed from the trial. The city is a lost cause and provides no benefit to take over.

Lemonsqueezy

I am under the impression that this event is to judge what a person does based on their path.

Lemonsqueezy

That is how I feel as well. Jake would have gone in an killed the dude outright. Miranda isn't a fighter and would deem the situation having more cost than benefit. What Miranda did here is the exact opposite of what Jake did on Venus.

Lemonsqueezy

That makes a lot more sense.

Kimesh

It is nice that in this Story, Charakters develop but also a bit sad. Jake already improved his naming sence, or at least acknowledges that he hasnt any and relies on others, behaves more proper as a chosen and now learned the next lession. I will miss goofy Jake

Kota

Hey, goofy Jake isn't gone! He'll just learn to explore vast new areas of silliness he simply lacked the capability to engage in. And he doesn't exactly have the best memory, so maybe it'll take a few more incidents for the lesson to truly take.

KenTX325

There is a Wyvrin that is due for an upgrade and apparently won’t make it from this event. Plus Jake has a heart and dragon knowledge from his work on dragons bane. He could work with the dragons at the order as well. I still think Jake needs to flex on the soul flame teacher dragon somehow.

Major Casaw

Man fuck that. I want to see the stage where Villy struggles with himself. He's slept his way to so many treasures. He can't possible trust his motives or hers. Do real relationships even exist?!

Dylan Hilliard

4 years in book release time lol 😆

Patryk

You got me curious, I am wondering now if there's a chance that First Sage's real name that nobody knows is actually 'Sagie'

Dylan Hilliard

Good point. I don't remember the book saying C to B grade was the only grade to become a dragon but you could be right. I do think that is on the menu through. That would be an awesome story arch; befriending a C dragon or half dragon to then be a True Dragon variant.

Bookreader97

I’m gonna venture a guess that they were either 1. In a system event together 2. Had some near death experience together or both. Or she had some cool bloodline

Bookreader97

Im a little sad Jake didn’t learn anything/get anything from the A grade snake. I get that it saved him, but usually in circumstances like this you would think Jake would walk away with some new insight into poison or scales. He didn’t even get any xp. How is tanking a backlash from the frog and basically strong arming his patron into possessing an A grade snake not get him any levels as a heretic chosen

Arieh Sochaczevski

The Primordials must have all known one another from at least the beginning of the 2nd Era. Villy would have known NA right from the beginning.

Summer Coff

You forgot he evolved his profession into Primieval Alchemist of Malefic Origins.

Summer Coff

Villy is a real cool dude for discreetly checking the GSS's undercarriage (or pheromone profile) so we can start using he/him instead of it/its for him.

John Durrett

I'll agree on poisons and xp - but he's newly minted B. As Villy pointed out - his bloodline and personality led him to a situation that he thought he could walk around like a God (Above or Equal) and casually make friends as he and Villy did. In reality he's a toddler walking around with a cigar in his mouth trying to impress the adults. Sure he has his power - but as he discovered and should already have known - A grades outclass him by a long mile. His only recourse is to flee and die while taking down as many as he can. Villy left him to his own devices as a learning experience. Yes - don't scheme its not in your blood, and B - Don't put your self in that situation to begin with by understanding that this is how people operate normally.

John Durrett

She did the correct action. If you cant be there to see the changes thru - don't get involved. Her team is B grades. A populace of D's with no B's with fortifications ranking higher then the populous means they are harvesting or killing anyone who could be a threat to whoever is in control. They would end up starting something that would get half or all of the populous killed then leave the world in the midst of chaos or retributions. 30 days - does not remake a civilization. Had they been informed they had 30 years (time dilation like nevermore) then it would be an entirely different matter.

John Durrett

@Major Casaw "Do real relationships even exist?!" The world may never know - Mr. Owl. :)

Josie

oh Villy definitely had an existential crisis lol. I still don't know how NA came to terms accepting the Malefic Viper as his son-in-law precisely bc he knew of the manipulative schemer. Even when Jake presented to NA that gift from Villy, both Ygg and NA thought it was sus lol

Xerecs

This will probably not be a popular opinion but for me this entire Venus arc of sorts has been kind of pointless aside from villy gaining a talented snake to bless. The event with any side character would be much more interesting.

Jeff McCulley

It was a male voice right off the bat.

Chris

I don’t do this at all but the phrase “you suck schemes.” Doesn’t sounds right, personally in the context of the rest of the passage I woulda said “you suck at scheming.” It would flow better with the whole text.

Jeff McCulley

I’m gonna take an alternate tack on Miranda’s test. The System is judging on the basis of how well an administrator will Administrate. A. This town is a simulation. Trying to change anything—not least, in 30 days—is a total waste of time and resources. B. They are B grades. If the town were relevant, a competent Administrator would send a low C grade—or even a peak D grade—to deal with it. Again, efficient use of resources. C. Even given “B”, the town would take more than thirty days to fix. To realign. Disrupting it without sufficient time to complete the process would leave it in a worse—and more unstable—state than it already is. Which is a negative result for any administrator.

Lemonsqueezy

**EDIT** - A lot of what is below was based on my incorrect understanding of this chapter. There is no one above D-Grade in the city. I do not hide my mistakes though. Well a B-Grade person runs the city, and least that is what I believe was said. There are no C-Grades, this makes me think the B-Grade killed them all or at least made them leave. If he killed them all that probably means he is at least decently powerful. Why risk your self getting removed from the trial because you die, or make the future trials harder by getting one of your team members kicked out. Miranda can fight, but she isn't exactly known for being able to take down people at a way higher level than she is like Jake can do. It also, as many others have stated, believe this was a way to show the ways Miranda and Jake make decisions. What Miranda did here was what Jake should have done of Venus. However, if Jake was in the trial Miranda is in he probably could have easily killed the ruling B-Grade but then would probably just leave them to their own devices. Jake doesn't like the political nonsense and is why he has Miranda to do it. I do agree with what you said though, there just wasn't enough time to really do anything with this city. It would provide no benefit to fix it, and there is just too many risks that interfering would present.

Lemonsqueezy

GGS was described as having a booming voice wasn't he? That description is often used when describing a male.

Jeff McCulley

You should probably read that portion again.

AsuraFalling

You know. Villy hit the nail on the head. Due to his bloodline Jake MUST have a giant backer. He’s subconsciously, categorically, incapable of viewing himself beneath or lesser than anyone regardless of the facts of life. Yes, sure, his bloodline is enormously broken but it has some very real very serious costs to it (that Jake simply is incapable of processing due to the bloodline) it’s rather a catch 22.

Lemonsqueezy

I can see why Jake didn't get any XP. He really didn't do anything to earn it. In the overall arc of Venus he actually came out on the losing side. He had to get rescued by Villy, he didn't manage to do it himself. He brought GSS into the order, but it was already a forgone conclusion that that would happen regardless. The System knows when effort has to be made and rewards people for it. When it comes to Jake he has to do something above his level to really get any beneficial experience for it. This is why Jake always has to fight higher leveled monsters, and the more powerful they are to him the better the XP. As Summer said, Jake also changed what his profession is titled so he no longer gets any of that sweet heretic-chosen XP, at least not at any decent level. Now he gets it when he does alchemy and especially when he does things with his Primeval Origin energy. As for insight for poison or scales, what insight could GSS give Jake that he hadn't already learned from Villy and his ability to see past scenes of Villy's life. GSS has been isolated from the multiverse and his skills are probably quite limited or mundane when you compare them to what is available in the multiverse. That is why Villy spoke highly of GSS, because the guy managed to get to where he is without any help and being stuck on this minor world which greatly limits what records he could get. We all know that records are required to advance. In the multiverse people have to travel around, meet people, fight, and delve dungeons to get records and advance.

Lemonsqueezy

We might eventually find out the guys real name, then Jake will shorten it and add ie to it.

Lemonsqueezy

So. I made a mistake in a lot of comments below (as many of you frequent commenters know I love to reply to people). I thought there were no C-Grades and only a B-Grade as the leader. Instead of going into each and every one of them and deleting or changing them, I will just say I realized my mistake when I reread the chapter and retract my statement when I said that. I also do not like to delete or change comments because it can make the other replies make no sense and seem like I am trying to hide my mistakes.

Lemonsqueezy

John, you just made me realize that I made a huge mistake in a lot of comments I made earlier. For some reason my mind told me that there was a B-Grade in charge of the D-Grades which made me think he killed all of the C-Grades and was powerful.

Lemonsqueezy

It more just says that the evolution to a True Dragon happens at B-Grade. This doesn't necessarily mean it couldn't happen at a later grade, but the story never mentions it happening. It also states that a True Dragon is the natural evolution of a dragon. So that makes me think that you already have to be a dragon to evolve into a True Dragon.

Lemonsqueezy

Mostly written as a learning opportunity for Jake. It is also a good way to expand on the Solar System. In the distant future Venus would provide more allies for Jake. A lot of people have wanted Jake to explore the other planets and this is a creative way to do it. Zog could have easily just made Venus hot and poisonous and had Jake spend a few months running around killing stuff, that would be boring though. Zog needed something for Jake to do while time passed. While Miranda's POV might have been interesting, she isn't the protagonist in the story. Detailed information about what happens during her trial really isn't important, only what the outcome of it is. When Jake starts his trial we will get a lot more detailed information of what is going on.

Josie

the cost is being a moron 💯

Titaniumtac

You suck schemes------> at schemes ,or, with schemes at tricks in next sentence

Xerecs

Could of been more the one pov change not just Miranda. The point is unless there will be something significant coming out of this in the future this entire trip to Venus could be called filler. So only time will tell if any of this made much of an impact on the overall story.

Summer Coff

Whether or not that's true, it's a fact that he was described using it/its pronouns until now.

Chloe

Tyftc

Comeback Kid

He needs a lot of experience.

dithering

I don't think he needs to be a dragon, his race already seems to be top tier

Corvid

No, he just hoovers them schemes down like it's his job

Corvid

Humility on the internet!? LE GASP

Corvid

"Upside, you are very very good at what you do, maybe even close to the best. Downside, you absolutely cannot stop screaming about how good you are while trying to give everyone a mushroom tattoo on their face about it."

Corvid

Now I'm just imagining Villy doing a bag check as soon as the snake showed up, like some frat bro. "I greet the for-FUCK!" "First rule, protect the jewels son! Beer's in the fridge."

Corvid

He's also said he's getting a lot from the atmosphere with pallet, especially since danger noodle lite hooked him up with a premium poison cave. Not exp but lots of conceptual gain, which I imagine will go well with his gate trip.

definitelynotbrjenness

one freaking time. one freaking time and now that's all I'll ever be referred for.

ABTelford

Very interesting point. I haven’t thought about the downsides of his bloodline, but yea it would totally get someone killed fast without a very powerful backer

ABTelford

Funny bit of trivia - snake genitalia is all internal until mating then a mini snake sneaks out. Then hides again. Sneaky snakes.

ZanSanCho

Right? I didnt know that was possible. Good on you Lemonsqueezy

Patryk

Maybe it was supposed to be "You suck, schemes", Villy wanted to tell us that scheming, well, sucks.

Corvid

These snakes got beefyboi arms, I'm not discounting the possibility of any other anatomical anomaly

JW Saxby

🤔 interesting choice, I wonder how it will pan out for her 🧐 Tftc 🍻

KyoDaDungeon!!

Wow go Miranda channeled her inner Jake you already know what Jacob gonna do

Parker Bond

So does that mean that the teleportation circle can't handle A grades? It would be fun if Jake could teleport the serpent to the order, have him evolve to S grade, then return and wreak havoc on Venus.

Parker Bond

To be fair, it's a simulated city that will probably cease to exist when the event ends so it's not like she's harming actual sentient life with her decision. Plus she probably recognized that it would take years of work to turn the city around in the best case scenario.

Hanson

In one of the previous chapters Villy said that he wouldn't be able to teleport anyone who hadn't already left Venus once at least.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

I'm actually surprised at her reaction I thought she would get right in there and fix it up you would think an administrator would be somebody who can do that a leader but I hope she made the right choice
