ExcelsiorCustoms / PickleBrick's Alan Scott Green Lantern! (Patreon)
Content
It has been a loooong time since I’ve looked at a custom Alan Scott Green Lantern! And boy am I happy to finally do so!
Excelsior/Pickle really did a wonderful job on this fig! Not to mention that it was their debut release almost a year ago! I’m a little late to the party, but I’m glad I didn’t miss out! Alan Scott is known for famously having “the worst costume in comics", with all his clashing colors and such, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the original Green Lantern!
Funny enough, this design isn’t even that original look, but rather a nicely updated and modern take on the character! I could have sworn I’d seen in one of the old Lego Videogames or something, but no, this was a fully original design! It looks just that good!
The lego-fication is really nice here! I love that the Lantern on the emblem is actually supposed to look like the official Lego piece! The sharp modern mask looks great too! As do both of the expressions! I would have also loved to have gotten maybe one more head print showing some gritted teeth or a bigger smile, but that’s just wishful thinking!
The cape is the only custom element to this fig, and it’s neat! It’s a hard plastic ABS plastic from what I can tell (shaped to look like the official Lego softer pliable “Dr Strange Cape”). It’s painted nicely on the inside too! Nice and bright ink! Matches Lego’s Like Green color pretty spot on!
This fig didn’t need any bells and whistles, and the print quality is good! Solid stuff! And for $56 it was also a great price!! Like really really good! 👍🏻
But of course I can’t call this review complete without a little comparison almost a decade in the making!
You all know I had to do this! I grabbed this old ParisCustoms Alan Scott out of retirement and wow! What a cool side-by-side this is!
ParisCustomBricks famously printed the first Alan Scott Green Lantern all the way back in late 2016/sold early 2017 and has been THE Golden Age GL in my collection! It’s been one of my favorite custom JSA figs for a long time, so to get a new version of the character from ExcelsiorCustoms this many years later is such a treat!
It’s so neat to look at these two side by side and see just how far this community has come in terms of design and print quality!
I mentioned up top, I love how Excelsior incorporated the actual Lego Lantern element into the torso design. It’s a piece that didn’t exist back when ParisCustoms printed their fig, and I for one love the idea. It really provides some nice Lego-like visual identity to the fig
I still think I enjoy the “loose shirt” look to ParisCustoms’ torso more than the tight muscles on Excelsior’s. Same with the closed up shirt collar. It’s much more of a traditional adaptation of the source material, rather than what a lot of modern artists these days have adapted Alan Scott’s suit to look like.
You can really see that with the mask/facial designs. Paris opted for an older, more rugged version of the character. While Excelsior has those newer sharp lines and modern mask shape.
It’s funny, but I really do love these both for their individual design choices! Old school vs new school in more ways than one! The print quality for Excelsior’s is obviously much higher than Paris’s, but that comes with the age of the figure. You can really see that in the legs of these figs.
At the end of the day, I do think it’s just a matter of taste! They’re both great in their own ways and I’m happy to have them both! :)
