FunnyBrick’s Marco Checchetto Daredevil (Variants) (Patreon)
Content
For once, I actually picked up some of the chase-variants! Yall know I don’t typically care for extra colored figs that are already expensive to begin with, but these three were all very different enough for me that it absolutely warranted the pick-up!
Just like FB’s standard Daredevil, each of these were $80 as well, and all perfectly valid in that price point! Like how I mentioned in that review, they’ve all retained that cool sketch-lined comic art style that I loved about the standard version, but taken to another level! Because sure, while they are variations on the initial Daredevil fig, they're all rather unique!
Interestingly though, two of them share the same legs so you can kind of see where costs were saved. Again, not that I’m implying these are cheap by any means! This is some high quality work here (and honestly the suit’s lower half doesn't change all that much in the source material anyway)
I also gotta give props to FunnyBrick for (in a roundabout way) for making a battle-damaged version of a character! It’s very rare to get something like that, and I will continually beckon to the skies for more battle damaged fig variants! (I’ve also got Bob’s Ant-Man/Ultron two-pack lying around on my desk right now that I want to review soon, but that will have to wait for another time…)
Anyway, the Damaged Suit is the one with the biggest changes so I’ll talk about that one first! And I mean come on! Look at this fig! It’s beautiful! Wow! This is a real treat!
While the head is also repeated on the “Punisher” fig, the cowl element has a different print design on the forehead. The 360° print work is really slick too! I love that fully exposed shoulder! Plus all those gashes and scratches and scuffs! Real good stuff! Especially when you look at it next to the standard fig!
How freaking cool is this fig!
The “artistic” aspect of the standard fig isn’t lost with any of this either. Perhaps some folks might think it’s a little busy, but frankly I love it!
But I can’t gush about just this fig! The other two figs are just as special in my eyes! For one thing, The Punisher shirt has some fun detail to it, like the taser burnt hole on the chest :)
While reviewing these figs, I also noticed how well all of the injuries align from torso to torso! Good attention to detail here!
The wrap around 360° printed linework alone for the bandaged fig is really solid! Everything connects pretty perfectly and there’s no majorly awkward misalignments at the corners of the torso.
The bandaged fig also comes with the best accessories in my opinion! Two different head prints, the cool mullet hair, and that fantastic loose cowl!
That cowl is gonna get lots of use in the future, but I’m not so sure about the hair. Outside of this context on this particular fig/character, it’s perhaps a little too detailed? I should specify, it’s not wildly out there. I mean come on, it’s not like PCB's Superman hair or anything
But the strands all feel a bit too independent from one another. The size of the strands? Perfect! But the number of them? It’s just a teeeny tiny weeeeee bit too much for me. I’m torn because it looks great on this one fig alone, but doesn’t have many uses for other figs.
Not a bad 3D design, but just a smidge too busy 🤷🏻♂️
And guess what! FunnyBrick also produced a white variant of this design (with some tweaks based off of some other DD book I have little to no memory of)
I didn’t pick up this fig because well… like the rest of these, it’s a chaser fig and I couldn’t justify another $80 for something I’d only ever photograph once. At least with these three figs I did pick up, I could scrap them for parts! But the White Devil? I skipped it. It still looks pretty slick though! Really impressive stuff!
That being said, there are lots of uses for the other figure’s parts that I’m sure will show up soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that in the coming days 😉
These four that I did pick up are truly great! The Lego-esq interpretation of Marco Checchetto’s art is perfectly achieved here!
It’s even more nifty when you can put these figs in order of events like I have here [Pre-Punisher Capture (Issues 1, 2, & 3), Punisher Murder Escape (Issue 4 & 5), and Spider-Man’s guilty “Heroes Don’t Kill” Speech (Issue 5)]
Like seriously, go read that mini Zdarsky story! It’s a good “hero on the run” story that I’m explaining very poorly. They’re great and Checchetto’s interior’s are killer!
And so are these figs! Hot damn! FunnyBrick is on FIRE! 🔥
