Legend C MOC's MCU Reed Richards (Patreon)
Content
I gotta hand it to LCM! This fig looks exactly like John Krazinski! Like down to the sad eyebrows and everything! :P
While I really hated the fan-casted stunt they pulled in the movie, it was neat to finally see Reed Richards on the big screen (despite being turned into a pile of spaghetti less than ten minutes later)
LCM once again brought us a great quality Lego version of this character and I don’t think anyone could have tackled it quite this well!
Other community members have said that LCM figs tend to lean a little on the side of “too much” sometimes. I can agree that this fig is certainly one of those that you’ll either love it or hate it for the design choices made here.
I for one love it as a fan of the Fantastic Four, and as a fan of high quality custom fig production. The fine line work and detailing 360° around multiple fig parts is impressive stuff no matter what you think of the design choices.
However at the same exact time, the Lego purist in me says that this one just doesn’t quite hit the mark. There’s so much line work here that he looks like a blue tiger down the sides of the arms and torso. The same could even be said about the on-screen costume frankly.
Yet I’m at odds. The ever lovin’ comic-eyed fan in me says I still should like it. And between you and me, I think it’s nostalgia blindness winning me over. Hell, I even like the old Fantastic Four animated series and that’s saying something! 👀
As for custom parts, I love the hair! It’s a nice Lego-Like thickness and isn’t overly complicated! It’s perfect for swapping around with other figs! Weirdly though, there’s some tiny gaps around the tips of the sideburns. You can see in some photos where they don’t quite come into contact with the head and it bugs me. Otherwise, good stuff!
And of course, we’ve gotta talk about the noodles!
If I didn’t mention it before, the standard Lego blue is a perfect base for the fig as a whole! I’m really glad LCM didn’t go with dark blue, because with the noodles themselves, they look great in this bright color!
Also this might be the first custom minifig part that I’ve bought that came with a disclaimer! As is says on the tin “Don’t hold the noodles!” Don’t even look at those noodles or so help me LCM will FIND YOU! 🫵🏻
I mean hell, the damn thing came with instructions on how to specifically hold it in a certain way. Don’t even attach the hair to the head yet! That’s step four and you know LCM will know if you do it in the wrong order
Okay I kid, I kid! But seriously this is a cool custom part!
There’s over twenty independent strands (yes I counted). Thankfully it’s not super brittle! There’s a bit of give where you can sort of move the noodles a little to squish them into a clamshell case without them breaking.
Still, I for one get nervous just looking at them. I mean while it’s amazingly cool to have this piece at all, it’s one of those elements that I worry won't last forever. All it’ll take is too gentle of a grip to not crush the thing, only to drop it on the floor and have it break anyway.
That recently happened to me with Bob’s Stilt Man jumping off my desk and I’m still crying about it every night before I go to sleep, worrying that I’ll break the replacement helmet they sent me.
Of course I’ve gotta activate my critical thinking brain and talk about a pretty obvious design flaw imo...
There’s about twelve blue branches that come out of the underside of the neck-peg. However there are only two “arms” that come off either side of the neck-peg. There’s multiple strands all simplified down and connected to one single noodle that’s no thicker than any of the others.
Honestly LCM could have tweaked this neck-peg concept to have more of a torso attached to the noodles instead of just a peg & base. It could have given them more attachment points and probably an even sturdier proof of concept.
And another thing! To make it a safer element to attach and detach a head, perhaps a shorter neck peg would have been a better idea? Like why did it even need to be so long in the first place when a stud connection would have done the trick just fine?
It requires a lot more pressure to assemble the head on a peg like that when a stud would have functionally made more sense.
But who’s to say what’s better! I didn’t make it! 🤷🏻♂️
And lastly, here's some other fun bits regarding the wider collection:
Some head swaps to make Sue and Johnny!
And a comparison next to MuddyRiverMinifigs's classic torso (and figbarf)
All in all, it was around $100 for this smart fella and I’m yet again pretty satisfied with the price-to-quality range here!
It sticks out like a giraffe in herd of cows when you’ve got it next to other classic Marvel figs, but I still love it :)
