Other people's hyper fixations fascinate me I love listening to my friends when they have something they are so focused on, as someone who prefers listening to talking it can be a nice way to pass the time.

I loveee hearing people talking about their passions! I usually end up getting as excited as they are telling me about it 😂

Mel

I love listening to people yap about things they are passionate about, there is so much spark in them. However finding someone with common "obsessions" to discuss is just pure gold, when you both just can't shut up about it...ahh I need to do this soon again 🤭

Shall we begin the yaps on hyperfixations? Yes. Yes we will. Oh dear lordie do, do I resonate too much on the family situation. It's apparent that a good portion of my family have *something*, but due to the the mental stigma of therapy, mental illness, amd the sorts in Latin American communities, most of those individuals in my family refuse to seek out any sort of help/treatment/etc. It's mainly those who are my age and younger that are starting the process of seeking out therapy and getting diagnosed, that we are noticing patterns in others within our bloodline. One sister was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and needs medications, a few others in the family with adhd, and so on. Now how this leads to hyperfixations, this I could answer on a personal standpoint. I have not been officially diagnosed with anything, but gosh do I know there's something in the works within the folds of my brain. Since I was small, I couldn't help but be curious on everything, but I would always gravitate to something. It would take my whole attention, as if everything else around me didn't exist for that moment. When you're trying to live your normal life, the brain can't help but think about it. You thought of it, you dreamed of it, you breathed it. It was your world, your existence. You were curious and wanted to know more and more. Growing up, I remember getting curious and hyperfixate on completely random things: weather patterns, stamps, gardening, hieroglyphics, ufos, muscles, so on and so on. It would lead to knowledge and conversations that fascinated me, and I couldn't get enough of it. I've spoken with therapists about it in greater detail, some say it could be adhd, others believed to be asd, a few mentioned it could be a traumatic response. But whatever the true case may be, I always cherished when my brain craves for a new thing to focus on. Keeps me curious, even if it feels like I'm mentally hyperventilating and need to breathe it to live sometimes. I do understand the feeling of being embarrassed about it, but at the same time, embracing it and knowing that you're receiving more knowledge and expression passion within that subject is all worth it. I'm loving this advice, listen, be curious, ask questions. Everyone is out living, as we are, yet their experiences and their views of the world are vastly different. A world living within a world. The knowledge they possess, and listening to them speak about their passions and stories is a good reminder. Holy fuck am I yapping. Consider this one of those late night yaps, where the lights are out, were cosy in bed all cuddled in close, but our minds won't shut down for the night.. for me, at least. I'm sure you're sleeping at this point. With that, thank you for another sweet crunch time. I'm happy to hear you had a lovely day with good amd engaging talks. You're sweet 💙 Slaap lekker, Crunchy, and stay safe 🌙

There's something so delightful in talking with people who are passionate about something, whatever their Thing may be. The enthusiasm and devotion to knowing so much about the minutiae of a particular subject is so infectious and endearing and wonderful. I can hear the pleased delight in your voice as you relay all these things you experienced today, and gosh, it's so magnetic. 🥰 (Also prosit to Menace; what an adorable sneeze 🥹) I have phases or "seasons" of hyperfixations too; the most notable for me is my sewing and more recently, crochet. I usually get the sewing bug in the winter, when there isn't that much to do with going outside with the amount of snow we get. I've been trying to keep up the goal of making at least one new article of clothing for my wardrobe every year— I still have pieces of a pair of overalls I need to cut out and put together. With the time investment it takes to make something, I have grown to give myself grace in working on any one project in bursts, and piecemeal— sometimes one stage of sewing really drags on and I have to remind myself it's ok to take a break and come back to it later. I'll end up getting sucked into playing a video game to near completion, or rereading my favourite books again for the next few months, anyhow. 😅 I mean— where one person in the family gets diagnosed with something, there's a non-zero chance that another member has it too, y'know? I speculate that I likely have something ADHD/ adjacent from both patterns of behaviour and the fact that my sibling was diagnosed in elementary. I'm not sure what I would do if I did get a diagnosis, mind you— its helpfulness would mostly be for the peace of mind of having a framework of terminology with which to refer to how I am and how my brain works. It still exists with me, regardless of its identification. So I'm content to continue existing as such, for the time being. But I digress. 🤍 I remember reading a textpost ages ago that talked about having multiple hobbies in various states of completion was good for the brain, because then you have something that fits the motivational energy you have available in that moment. It's a nice thing to think about; a kinder way to think about it, too, I feel. That it's ok to move from one thing to another like bees to flowers. Maybe we like a certain flower more than others and keep coming back to it, but the other flowers in the garden are just as beautiful to visit too. A bouquet of interests is more beautiful in its variety. 💐(or "Jack of all-trades is better than being a master of one, or of none", if you want a more colloquial idiomatic phrase ☺️) I remember another quote of "Show me a permanent state of being" in tangential reference to the sentiment of "it's Not *Just a Phase*". We're meant to be multifaceted, and comprised of several things all at once. Please never stop talking about whatever delightful thing has captured your attention and your time in the moment. It is just as invigorating listening to you talk as you clearly are and sound from talking to others about the very thing they are invested and passionate about. ❤️ Sending sweet dreams and kisses to you and Menace, - cor 💕

to help aid your imagination a bit to make this feel more like a conversation, just know i was doing a bit of brow furrowing with this ramble. not in a bad way though, just that your thoughts led me to lots of other thoughts and now i’m trying to pull them together in a reply that doesn’t take ages to read lol. in my specific field in the mental health world, i’ve been trained to be quite critical of the DSM and mental health diagnoses in general because of the lack of sociocultural considerations when conceptualizing disorders. my perspective is that pop psychology and the normalization of disorders has also led to people being eager to find labels for their experiences and then the label becomes an identity which is a problem. someone doesn’t have anxiety or depression or trauma, they are a person who experiences those things. and i know the distinction might be silly for some people, but it really makes a difference when you remove the sense of ownership and identity from the label. that’s why i liked your “i think i’m just a person” comment in a text post recently, because aren’t we all just people with rich and unique stories trying to figure out what it means to live a fulfilling life? i don’t want to discount the fact that a diagnosis can really help some people, but i also think at times a problem is a problem when we conceptualize it as a problem. if it isn’t causing you significant distress or impacting your daily functioning, maybe it’s society’s standard of “normal” that is the problem and not your behavior listening to be curious and understand, hmm, i love that 🤍 have a good night crunch, or good morning more likely 🌱 digital hugs

The intro keeps getting better and better, Crunch 🥰 Sigh… I had a very annoying morning. Exceptionally annoying, in fact. There was an overcharge on my electric bill, and for reasons that defy all logic, it couldn’t be resolved over the phone. So, I had to physically go down there, and endure a whole performance of them trying to shuffle me around. Meanwhile, I had every receipt, every payment confirmation, all the proof lined up like little soldiers… and still, they insisted on doubting me. Truly a test of patience. Anyway, I thought maybe a bit of atmosphere would help you picture this “conversation” better? I’m currently perched at my bedroom desk, wrapped up in my very snuggly, very beloved bee sweater. It’s raining softly outside, just enough to make everything feel gentle and quiet. My coffee turned out amazing this morning—I added coconut milk as a small act of self-care 😅. As I type this, there’s a thoughtful little frown on my face, the kind that shows up when I know I’m about to start a long ramble and still pretend I’m not. Where to start... There are so many threads I could tug on. I think that’s where a lot of my frustration in these “conversations” comes from—trying not to chatter too much while still giving back the kind of attention you so kindly offer us. It's a dance, isn't it? You sounded tired in the best sort of way—sleepy, content, like someone who's been wrapped up in something good. Even though we don’t get to hear the actual conversations you mention (which is, of course, more than fair), it’s still lovely just listening to the gentle rhythm in your voice, the softness in your tone, and that smile that sneaks through. I loved how well you know us—"We will get a car, Crunchtime, don’t you worry.” Heehee. I suppose we don’t hide our affection for those car chats very well. Also… hi Menace~ That sneeze? Too cute. Thank you for sitting with us, sleepy boy. I understand him completely. If I could sit and watch you forever, I probably would too. As my brother once put—quite poetically, if I may say: “For someone with the attention span of a gnat, you sure can fixate on things.” I swear he loves me. Heehee. I do tend to hyperfocus—especially when something interesting crosses my radar. I’ll dive in headfirst, learn everything I can, obsess over it until I feel that satisfying little click in my brain… and then just as suddenly, I’ll shelve it and move on. That’s very much how my creativity works too. Ideas strike out of nowhere—I’ll stew on them, jot things down, dream with them in mind—and then… nothing. I tuck them away, sometimes forever. It’s why I have so many notebooks filled with concepts that may never see the light of day. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen when I’m working on actual assignments. I suppose having a clear task keeps my mind in check. I’ve never been diagnosed with anything beyond dyslexia, but I wouldn’t be surprised if other things were going on. On my mother’s side, my eldest cousin has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and though my uncles were never officially diagnosed, the signs are… well, everywhere. My mom herself can be very emotionally erratic—volatile, really. Like a storm that doesn’t quite care who’s caught in it, even if it’s her own children. My dad’s side is the quieter opposite. Many of my cousins there have struggled with depression. My brother—though undiagnosed—is definitely a little OCD and very SPS. So, really, I don’t see why I should be the exception. My brother actually believes the way I fixate on characters and how vividly they live in my mind isn’t “normal. And I say: “All great artists were touched with madness.” …at which point, he usually hits me. Rude. *Shrugs dramatically.* I love listening to people talk about what they care about—doesn’t matter how small, how niche, or how “silly.” There’s something radiant about it. The last time I was on the receiving end of one of those lovely rants was from a barista—actually, a co-owner—of a new little café that opened a few blocks from my place. I’d gone with a friend and we were mid-debate over blends vs. single origins (I’m a single origin fan myself), and he swooped in with the most brilliant smile and did not stop until I confirmed that yes, his coffee was divine. (And it really was—his charm had nothing to do with it, I swear!!!) He was sweet, incredibly passionate, and—importantly—knew his stuff. I ended up connecting him with a friend of mine who roasts ethically because, unlike his business partner, he actually cared about sourcing. Hmm… as I type this, I realize I haven’t been back there in a while. I really need to fix that. OH! And he sells the most gorgeous teacups! Absolutely adorable, and just shy of criminally expensive 😣 (Sorry for the random info dump 😅) Anyway. I’ll stop here before I spiral deeper. It sounded like you had a really lovely day yesterday. I always get this warm, floaty feeling when I hear you sounding content—and then all giddy when you share those curious, heartfelt stories with us. “Ask, listen, and be curious” is wonderful advice 🤍 May your dreams be full of soft nonsense and sweet feelings. Sleep well— may the sun rise gently, and may your coffee be exactly how you like it, sweet Crunch. Sending warm hugs and tiny kisses. Kalimera~ 🤍🌺

Hehehe, before I forget like last time, please give Menace a sneezable boop on the head for me, he's too precious.. 🫶🏼 While I can't offer much else that hasn't already been said here, it is a wonderful sight watching and hearing someone so passionate and in tune with what they do, that very deep love put into words of understanding and intrigue, and inviting you into such a wonderful learning experience. It's something they won't forget anytime soon. I shall heed your advice sir. My fear of being labeled annoying has cost me some fantastic conversations and experiences that I otherwise would never be able carry out. I guess many days of practice are in order?? Hope you're having the sweetest dreams and got some amazing rest, Crunch. Thank you for this 🌹🌹

Bless you, Menace! "He will look at me forever" Same, Menace, same. Take this with a big grain of salt, cause I'm not trying to diagnose anyone over the Internet nor am I qualified lol, but from my very limited point of view, you give off ADHD vibes. But that could just be because we see more of you and your content when you're in a happy, manic mood than not. I love listening to people indulge in their hyperfixations, because you know they've put in the time and research and are basically experts. Nevermind the fact that they started being an expert after a few 3am rabbit holes, instead of years of dedicated study. It's called being efficient lol. If nothing else it's a good time to be interested in gardening. Your throne is looking a little bare, you could put some gardening related stuff on there. (Put little toys and treats for Menace too 😺. He said so, trust me.) Speaking of hyperfixations/special interests,(i.e I'm gonna yap about something and hardly no one will understand, please indulge me lol) the pokemon card scene is in shambles right now. Prismatic Evolutions was a highly demanded special set, that was scalped to death, (by people who used to resell shoes of all things?) but that means you have a bunch of people buying up pokemon that don't understand it at all, and in the hype they also heavily scalped the Journey Together set, which is a pretty mid, normal set, which is gonna tank in price once they figure out the demand is not there like before. Idk, I bought my little single Furret chase card, and can sit back and watch the market burn until the next set in May lol Until then, I need to find something new to focus on. You sounded so content and lovely in the Crunch time, thank you 💙

As an autistic person, I feel so seen by this conversation. Having a neurodivergent brain like mine means whatever I get interested in becomes a hyper-fixation of mine (severe weather/tornadoes is my main one right now if it wasn’t made obvious by some of my previous comments haha). When I was a kid/young teenager I was constantly made fun of for talking about or engaging in my niche interests even though it’s just how my brain is. I hid a lot of that part of myself for a long time because I felt embarrassed, but I’ve come to the conclusion that people are going to judge me no matter what I’m interested in so I might as well live to my truest, happiest self. It’s been a liberating mindset for me to have and it’s done wonders to my overall well-being. I think having niche, concentrated interests should have less of a stigma within society; it’s what has made the geniuses who’ve created great change in our world and it’s part of what makes us human. 💙
