For those of you who don't know Rusty, he is a very talented creature usually found in Nashville, Tennessee. The internet is a wild place - I've loved Rusty's music from afar for a good while now, after my friend Dodie raved about it one day. Fast forward a couple years and we're in my bedroom writing a lil' tune together, giddy about how quickly it was coming together, giddy about how fun it was to sing in harmony. It actually looked like we weren't going to get to film a vid for this while Rusty was in the UK, but then the boy MISSED HIS DANG FLIGHT BACK TO THE U.S. which is noT a good thing but was also kind of a good thing, because we got to squeeze this video in. Woooooooop.
We wrote this song about trying not to be so hard on yourself. From a musician's perspective, it was kind of about the lack of structure, the lack of a rulebook for doing a job like this. The endless possibilities for how to best spend each day, how to make each decision that will go on to affect your career.. the tendency to get so frustrated at yourself in hindsight for all the things you didn't do, the tendency to compare yourself to others! These things make my head spin. I had a little rant and Rusty totally understood, his peaceful nature shone through straightaway and chilled me out - we agreed life would be a heck of a lot easier if we were just a little kinder to ourselves. :) I think this is less of a song about musicians and ultimately a song about an aspect of being human. Would be cool to hear if anyone gets where I'm coming from with this! (self-critics, show yourselves!)
Hope you guys like. mp3 attached to this post if anyone fancies it!
Lyrics (as stolen from a Youtube comment where someone went to the effort of typing them up, lol. big up that girl):
i don't wanna lose, i don't wanna stay
tell me what to do, tell me what to say
maybe i need to get it together
maybe i need to just figure it out
(chorus)
and i feel like i'm wasting my time
all i've been doing is trying my best just to clean up my messes
i'm sorry
maybe i'll get up in the morning
won't somebody look me in the eye and tell me
"my friend, you're doing just fine"
looking back at you in the stairway
you bent your knees to hear what i had to say
that's when you swore it's a metaphor
i needed help just to figure it out
(chorus)
just fine, just fine
all my friends are doing just fine
just fine, just fine everybody's doing just fine (repeat!)
