HEY FOLKS! Welcome to your June demo, ‘isn’t fun anymore’ :)

I’m away for the weekend at a little festival called Barn on the Farm (woOP) so I’d like to tell you about the lyrics now, rather than in a separate post!

So when I was younger, I had a few big fears. One was that robbers would sneak into our house at night, one was DEATH and the other was that my parents would split up. If you met my parents you’d probably laugh at that, because luckily they are the most content, well-suited pair of people I’ve ever met. But they’re not the hand-hold-y, public-affection-y type and never have been, so at 7 or 8 when I first saw other couples all over each other I decided there and then that my folks were putting on an act for me, that they were actually just bored of each other and done with their marriage (what an absolute bloody drama queen). Like I was so, so sure of this; years on I found my first scribbly diary entires about it, detailing how they didn’t speak to each other for one whole Friday evening and wondering how they’d break the news to me that they were breaking up. looooool.

They didn’t split up. They’re still together, poking fun at each other every day. But I think this initial fear left me oddly fascinated by the idea of an old, perhaps stale relationship, and what that might feel like. So that’s where I took this song - I had the chorus lyric for a few weeks - ‘maybe it’s inevitable, but this just isn’t fun anymore’, and I tried a couple different routes - writing about music and how overthinking it takes the enjoyment away, or other experiences that I’ve had personally. But instead, I imagined up a scenario and ran with that. It was really fun (though a little heartbreaking) to do. My head dug quite deep into it.. even though I never needed all the details I imagined up the couple, gave them names, jobs, decided where they might live, what they might look like. It sort of helped me fill in the blanks with small, real life details, like the routine of flicking on the news every night.

So, yeah, that’s it! :) I really hope you like it guys, as always it would be magical to hear what you think.. any feedback good or bad is most welcome! I have a comment question for anyone who would like to answer it (and indeed anyone who actually reads this far into the post!) - what was your biggest fear when you were young? :)

lyrics:

it’s the same routine

scene by scene

look me in the eye

are you not bored?

flicking on the news

kicking off your shoes

on the bedroom floor

got a tear in my eye

i tell you i’m tired

but i’m not tired

i miss chat up lines

and first times

the goodbyes

that we dragged out

now it’s just a wave

not a lot to say

do you have doubts?

you’re putting out your hand

with your sweaty palm

i don’t wanna hold it

MAYBE IT’S INEVITABLE

BUT THIS JUST ISN’T FUN ANYMORE

oh i’m nicely dressed

in my sunday best

and i touch your chest

but you don’t care

so i bite my cheeks

and i walk the streets

just to breathe air

oh it’s so comfortable

it’s insufferable

i don’t wanna hide it

(chorus)

we’re so tangled up

it’s hard to know

how we might function on our own

i’m scared that we might never know

i think it over every night

then face the day and wear a smile

shit we’re living a lie

(chorus)

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek, a piano song. Piano songs are one of my favourite things to listen to. I don't know if I can describe it, but it's like you can feel more of the artists emotion come through in piano songs. Even with artists who you don't think of when you say piano. (Must refrain from naming more pop people) So when I've had time to listen to this more, don't be shocked if I post on future demo's how much I adore it, as I'm about to do with Fist Fight. The start of that chorus is just so nice/fun. I had it in my head all day Wednesday at work and it's already in my Orla Top 5. (Get Back, I Don't Feel Like Me, Glitch, Fist Fight and Overthinking) Again, I'm not constructive, so I'll just have to settle for being a hype man for now. (It's weird cause there's other songs from people I'm like, OOOOH THIS COULD DO WITH THIS HERE!) As for fears as a kid, I don't think I had anything outside of the usual fears for a kid. So here's a slight tie in. Whenever I was in the car looking out the window and seeing objects as I'd go by, like a wall, I'd smile at them so they didn't think I didn't like them. And if I were to touch things, I'd be saying "don't hate" in my head, so it knew I didn't hate it. Not so much of a scared type of fear, more of a KNOW I LIKE YOU AND DON'T COME TO LIFE AND HURT ME fear. (I did have a comment like this but I had to keep editing it and i can't see it anymore on here so if you've already seen this, apologies)

I am in love with this so much! Also, it is very relatable. So you can hook 'em all! I love the idea of thinking up a whole scenario for song writing. I did that once and thought I would write a book or movie but it never became anything. It was a lot of fun thinking up the scenario though. I enjoyed coming up with different options/paths for the characters and deciding if it fit with the story or not. Since I never finished it maybe I can write a song from it :) I was a big baby when I was young and everything scared me. I was really attached to my mom so I always had a fear of never seeing her again. I feel like I would get obsessive thoughts that turned into fears but I cannot think of any specifically right now. I guess as you grow up and your mind develops you realize you have nothing to fear

Just gotten to this ... wow, a gentle piano; your voice to the fore. It's a lovely mix. So pleased to read your FB post about producers. Such an important step for you. Hope it all goes swimmingly. The words in this are beautiful. We've all been through fears - you've captured some of that angst perfectly.

This is hard to listen to man, not because its not good, it's amazing. But with the amount of emotion you can muster up into your voice and how sadly accurate this feels at the moment, curse you and your wonderful song writing / performing.

This has taken me a few days to listen to but oh my gosh this demo is gorgeous 😍 xxx

ORLA THIS IS GREAT. Teach me your ways, man. I actually just launched a Patreon creator page of my own this week. Decided it's time. I've supported a few artists here on Patreon but only one has stuck for me & that's you. When making plans for what I wanted my Patreon to be, I constantly looked to you as a model for what I want to do. You're doing it right & I am constantly inspired EVERY month by what you post here. Love love love.

Orla, I know this may sound awful, but this time is what made me decide it’d be definitely right to split up with my now ex girlfriend. To me it represents the idea that you do just grow out of each others company and that moving on is generally part of growing up. Thanks for that darling, miss u xox
