HEY LOVELIES. Grab yourself a cuppa or a glass of orange squash, it's time for one of my (famously long) patreon vlogs!

In this video I discuss the February demo "I don't feel like me" & give some feedback on the feedback.. and I (eventually) introduce a new idea, my list of song challenges. all is revealed in the vid! (scroll to 10.41 to skip the initial babble and go straight to the explanation of the list).

Once you've watched please leave some challenge suggestions in the comments on this post! I'll add each one to the list and attempt it at some point of life. it could lead to a secret demo club demo or indeed a track on the future album! :)

So much love for you all.

PS I've written the demo for March already, woop, and it started from one of the challenges on the list! MORE TO COME.

Its always fascinating to hear you talk about your process and its great that your so candid with us all. Here's my suggestions for the ideas list: a) You talking about Blue made me think perhaps you could try writing a song with an alternate tuning (I think that's what Joni did in places on that album) - maybe even making up your own! (<a href="http://sethares.engr.wisc.edu/alternatetunings/alltunings.pdf)." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://sethares.engr.wisc.edu/alternatetunings/alltunings.pdf).</a> Some of the ones on that list have amazing names!! b) What about writing a song without using any instruments, making noises with any household items you can find then sampling and looping them? Thanks for all the great songs so far. Really looking forward to what comes next! :-)

In response to Neil. The group "stomp" does a lot without musical instruments. No vocals so purely rhythmical, but it captures me. Throw in a little blue man group and you'll be good to go. :p. I've written time signature and changing tempo songs. My last one was purely accidental where I had come to a road block on about three different songs and somehow magically connected them all. 4/4, 3/4, 6/8 If you could write a song outside of those basic time signatures, it'd be pretty cool. Not many popular songs outside of that realm. Pink Floyd's "money" being an exception, although I know there are a few other others out there...though I'm not sure aiming to be unpopular is your goal here. Lol.

Very nice and honest video. Again. :) I feel really lucky to have this exclusive access to an artist's brain in this way - both the good, the dark, the insecure and the excited parts. A pair of challenges: 1. Write a song that starts with the chorus (you might have done this already) 2. Write a song with no chorus. (Yes, it's totally possible: <a href="http://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/10-amazing-songs-without-choruses-762322)." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/10-amazing-songs-without-choruses-762322).</a>

Neil I love these suggestions..thank you! :) particularly on the tuning thing.. Really interesting

After a little more thought, I've thought a long time about attempting to write a song that doesn't repeat the same chord structure from start to finish. No repeating chorus/verse structure Continual change throughout. I've also written a song that once through it, the lines are sung in reverse order back to the beginning.

On my way to a pinegrove gig in Amsterdam thanks to our lovely chats and playlist!! Thanks for the suggestion, can not remember if it was Orla or someone else! ♥ ♥

Unrelated to SONG WRITING, but if you wanted to do a cover of Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional, I wouldn't be MAD.

Ok so I'm new to the group and haven't quite finished reading everyone else's suggestions yet, so sorry if this music challenge was already mentioned. Have you tried to write a song where it builds to a climax that is spoken to the rhythm instead of sung? A favorite example of this would be "Fought For Me" by Paradise Fears. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_VxazbaB5c" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_VxazbaB5c</a>

I am sorry if these were suggested but I am too lazy to read the comments! #1-Write a song from a piece of art (painting, photograph, sculpture, etc.) I always get a certain feeling when looking at photographs with fog. #2-Write a song about how you bring yourself out of a bad mood. Or processing how one minute you can be in a bad mood and then soon after you are in a good mood. Are there certain things or people that make you feel better? #3-Write a song about how different your trust looks with different people in your life. Who is the person you trust the most? Do you easily trust people? Is there anyone you know who you trust with everything? Do you trust yourself? #4-Write a song that would be on a "workout" or "dance" playlist.

I don't know if this is just something that works better at concerts, and I think you've done it with live performances of Roots. But I love when the first verse and chorus are acoustic/a bit slower, and then for the second verse it all kicks in and is upbeat for the rest of the song.

i'm supposed to finish a presentation for school, so I didn't read the comments. A song challenge that went through my head was writing a song that doesn't sound like its yours. For exapmle, do you know Lemon Tree by Fools Garden? (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCDIt50hRDs)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCDIt50hRDs)</a> Its probably the only song you know. The funny part is that all their other songs sounds completely different and (in my opinion) way better than Lemon Tree. here are some examples: 1. Innocence - <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vq2ZW_W8Bk" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vq2ZW_W8Bk</a> (There is a better version with a real orchestra) 2. Suzy - <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XMq_pU0b5Q" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XMq_pU0b5Q</a> and many other songs i didn't find online. Anyway, you get the idea^^ also, i'm impressed how much you think about your songs. I only finfished two songs so far, and seeing how other musicians think is really helpful and interesting for me. so thanks for the insight you gave us :D
