Hey everyone! You may already know that when it comes to Tsugaru Shamisen, the famous ‘Tsugaru Jongara Bushi’ comes to mind. In this post, let's delve deeper into this Tsugaru Jongara Bushi!
Types of Tsugaru Jongara BushiTsugaru Jongara Bushi has a history of development alongside singing. ‘Kyokubiki’ style, often seen recently, where only the Shamisen is played, originally developed from the intro to the song. Shamisen players, as the unsung heroes when accompanying songs, have traditionally showcased their skills during the intro!
There are actually 4 types of Tsugaru Jongara Bushi songs. While the lyrics remain mostly the same, the rhythm and phrasing of the accompaniment have evolved over time, creating different types.
Let's take a look at the types from the oldest to the newest!
Kyubushi (旧節)The first version of Tsugaru Jongara Bushi. Compared to the more commonly heard "Shinbushi" or "Shinkyubushi," it is shorter and may seem simpler. However, mastering the Shamisen accompaniment rhythm for this Kyubushi is quite challenging and difficult to master. Nowadays, it is often performed as accompaniment for Teodori Dance*.

Nakafushi (中節)Nakafushi, which became popular after the Kyubushi, features significantly different rhythms from Kyubushi for the Shamisen accompaniment. The phrasing of the song also becomes more elaborate, making Nakafushi the most challenging to sing among the types of Tsugaru Jongara Bushi. Live performances of Nakafushi are now rare, making it a precious experience to hear it performed live.
Shamisen: Hikari Shirafuji / Song: Akiko Omodaka / Taiko (Drum): Kanami Takedahttps://youtu.be/oWfMlZdLNbI?feature=shared
Shinbushi (新節)Shinbushi is the most commonly heard version of Tsugaru Jongara Bushi. It is the most frequently performed version in competitions as Kyokyubiki and includes a variety of Tsugaru Shamisen techniques. The song is lively and vibrant. In the example provided, Akimi Fukushi's song includes "Soranbushi" section.

Shinkyubushi (新旧節)
The newest type of Tsugaru Jongara Bushi is Shinkyubushi. It combines the best aspects of both Shinbushi and Kyubushi. While the accompaniment is similar to Shinbushi, Bachizuke is lighter and more lively. We plan to start lessons of ‘Shinkyubushi’ on Learn Shamisen soon! Stay tuned…!
