Jeremy: Well, we did it. We finally got every single one of the regular co-hosts onto an episode together. That's six people! That's a recipe for anarchy! And yet, it works—and it seems only appropriate for the kickoff of a significant new console steeped in history. No, the Switch 2 as a topic does not really fit the "classic gaming" remit of Retronauts, but we finagle it nonetheless by framing the new console's launch in terms of Nintendo's own console launches past, stretching all the way back 40 years. 42, actually, to Famicom. How does Switch 2 stack up? What can we prognosticate about its fortunes based on the performance of Nintendo systems past? Join myself! And Bob! And Diamond! And Nadia! And Stuart! And Kevin! All of us! As we explore the question of what history says about Switch 2!

That Gyromite track is still an absolute banger (hardly know 'er).

I bought the least amount of games of any system for the N64 but spent the most amount of time playing them thanks to multiplayer ones like Goldeneye and Mario Kart.

The virtual game cards have their ups and downs. We have a full sized Switch, then my wife has her own Switch Lite and my son has his own Switch Light. Most of the digital software is bought in on my account so it’s “owned” by me. Previously with the main Switch being the “primary” for my account all software can run for any of the accounts on that system. But if my son wanted to play a game owned by my account on his stream then it would need to be played on my account on his system, and it has to be connected to the internet, which means in the car it would need to be tethered to one of our phones. But now any of the digital software can be “loaned” to his account and played on his Switch Lite, on his account, without needing a constant internet connection. It just can only be one thing loaned at a time. However it has made the way we used to play something like Luigi’s Mansion 3 with all three of us more difficult. We have two copies of the game, one on my account and one on my son’s. So we could all thee play Scare Scraper together by him logging on to his copy on his Switch, then using my wife’s account on the main Switch, then my account on her Switch connected online. This workaround no longer works and we now need a third copy of the game for each account to have one.

My biggest hope for the Switch 2 is that third party/indie developers release some good rail shooters that take advantage of the mouse mode. I think that genre could shine with that feature if done well.

Thanks to this episode, I now know that I can more easily share screenshots via the Switch app. Just added some to my “Summer 2025 Finished Games Thread” on Bluesky and it was a lot simpler than the old way.

The bass line in the Super Hang-On theme at 56:26 made me so happy. Thank you for letting me know this exists.

I am glad buying Switch 2 immediately at launch didn't give me the feeling of buyers remorse I felt with other Nintendo systems in the past. After the mess of a launch for Wii, I immediately bought 3DS and Wii U at or within a few days of launch. While the 3DS did grow on me and Wii U I had fun with....eventually, I grew to regret the rush of purchasing since the games didn't seem to exist at the time. I waited a few months for Switch 1 and even regretted that at first (til Mario Odyssey a few further months out). The backwards compatability of Switch 1 and some interesting 3rd party stuff made up for lack of first party things for me. Deltarune chapters 3 and 4 alone was better than any those others offered.

"They've sold more consoles than Jesus." well you're not wrong Diamond, at least according to the canonical gospels.

I think you got it Backwards. All key card games did not sell. Cyberpunk did because it was physical. So no there is no preference for physical going away its the opposite
