after two jumbo-sized episodes packed with major announcements, this latest community podcast is relatively light in scope. Indeed, it might have gone under 90 minutes were it not for a 20-minute segment where Stuart Gipp and I (Diamond Feit) gush about the new Superman movie. I don't think we spoil anything but if you want to opt out, use the music queues below to guide your listening.

With Long Island Retro fast approaching, this might be my last missive for a few weeks! But I'll see you in Garden City and I'll be back with another community episode in August for sure.

I’m super excited for Stu Takes America.

QotM: Game of the year so far is Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Finally fully focusing on Majima again was a blast. As much as I like the RPG RGG games, I prefer the brawler ones and this has perfect level of content (for lack of a better term) compared to some over stuffed entries (a nice breezy 50 hours lol).

QotM: Squeakross: Home Sweet Home. Rodent creator + one of the best (no caveats, hands-down) picross titles + animal crossing home building sim. They've just wrapped all the bugfix patches and I'm waiting to see what comes next since there's been a tease of more puzzles (which means more dress-up/homemaking).

I am only here to say I *love* the This Month in Retronauts. So good!

QotM — Metroid: Zero Mission. Despite being a lifelong Metroid fan, I missed this one. Following along with the Retronauts Metroidvania Book Club, I planned to play Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. But a few hours in, I wasn’t enjoying the control complexity or combat, and was yearning for something more classically Metroid. Well… Zero Mission obviously fit the bill. Its controls and pacing were a joy, and the ending sequence was a fun surprise.

You can say "No ethical consumption under Capitalism" and still recognize that you need to consume in order to survive due to the system that you're under.

Why does every outlet feel the need to eulogize some guy that was in a Rocky movie just because he was a ‘rassler? If one good thing can come from this can we finally stop pretending ‘rasslin has anything to do with entertainment?

GOTY: Expedition 33

I have 2 games battling which I feel I enjoyed more. One is a game everyone knows of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. A lovely game that borrows heavily from a ton of different JRPG into one exciting package. The other game is a game no one most likely knows Hopshot. A game the site Remap played the game which got me interested and really loved it. You play as a gay frog with a gun. It's a super difficult platformer but in ways I personally enjoy. Also as for my name it's just "bro" but more "cute" since my little sister just found calling me that funny and it just kind of stuck.

I'd really love to play Shadow Labyrinth, if only for the Namco lore, but I've never played a combat heavy Hollow Knight-like Metroidvania before. Perhaps if it got featured on the Metroidvania book club I'd be convinced. The other Metroidvania I'm holding out for on the book club is Axiom Verge, seeing as I have that installed on my Switch (2) but haven't got around to playing it yet. Wondering if the Switch 2's mouse mode could be easily used to simulate a trackball for games like Golden Tee and SegaSonic the Hedgehog. And even though I'm a San Francisco Giants fan, I'm glad that you too consider hololive night at Dodger Stadium as a cornerstone of baseball history.

QotM: I'm going to cheat here, and vote for the lazy afternoon I spent with Housemarque's two 2017 releases. Nex Machina is Robotron: 2084 on steroids, if the steroids were on steroids. A gazillion enemies exploding all around you, yet following the action was still manageable, and the colors just POPPED in HDR. And then up was Matterfall, combining the best of what I love -- tight platforming, nonstop run'n'gun, rewarding exploration leading to satisfying loadout customization, and a final boss demanding mastery of it all.

Yeah that was the hardest I've ever heard JP laugh so thanks for the behind the scenes info.

QOTM: Crow Country. What a memorable game. Diamond has solid recommends, including CloudPunk which has also stuck with me.

Kirk

QotM: Earthion is so good. My only complaint is I have to wait for it to arrive on my Megadrive. Highly recommend.

QotM: The year has been extra retro for me, dipping into various games from over the last 5 decades, but I think the one I was most impressed with was Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne. Having played the previous four mainline Megaten games over the last few years, it's really fun to see the games gradually building more intricate and accessible mechanics around the lore and familiar designs. By far the best entry in the series up to that point.

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

I started a new job early in the year (machine operator on mine construction in outback Australia) and the first three or four weeks were mainly spent sitting in an idling machine unneeded! I finally got the much-raved-about Slay the Spire and can confirm it's about as addictive as roguelite card games can get. At least until you actually want to beat the challenging, true ending and have to rely on RNGsus favouring your run. Between that and Balatro I've managed to stay sane and keep away from the trap of browsing online shops!

QotM: This question hit me surprisingly hard. It made me realize just how tumultuous a year it's been and my answer reflects that. My GotY would have to be Winback: Covert Operations for the N64. Thanks to the ability to remap controls on NSO, I was able to make the game more playable than it ever was and FINALLY finished it after 20+ years. I got to bask in all its direct-to-video action glory (a fun contrast to Perfect Dark's Hollywood blockbuster vibe), which was strangely comforting through all this. P.S. I'm running a Kickstarter for my newest GBC action platformer Sword of the Apocalypse and was hoping you could give it a shout out in the monthly Kickstarter Kompilation. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jcouche/sword-of-the-apocalypse-gameboy-color/rewards
