Sanji Joestar

So number wise, Fishman Island was estimated to be around 5Million in population and that was around 12years ago. So it's the size of a decently small country.

100Rainy

I hate to say it because I really liked what y'all were cooking in the discussions, but I think the bright red apple was literally just a creative choice by the anime to give the sequence a little visual flair. Fairly sure Hody's not munching on apples in the manga at all.

Sanji Joestar

Hody eating the fruit as he absords the hatred festering around his environment is such a cool visual presentation.

BOLDcast

Lmao I (Lindsay) was thinking this might be the case the whole time but regardless I feel like it’s an interesting metaphor and was fun to discuss!

BOLDcast

Damn that’s way bigger than it looks. The perspective of the anime can sometimes be hard to tell how big things are.

Bighead

Hey sorry to be so over bearing about orb, but could you maybe let us know a rough schedule of when you'll be watching it. I know you're busy, but as someone who subscribed to your patreon for mostly Orb content (as I don't watch one piece), it would be nice to know if you guys are going to watch it and when. And if you're not in the mood or don't want to continue watching it, you can be honest about it too!

Sanji Joestar

Yeah it can mess the sense of perspective a lot sometimes lol. I think the implication is most of the population also lives inside the submerged areas of the bubble, inside the coral reefs like Camie said.

100Rainy

Oh for sure, I would've loved if Hody actually had that level of thought put into his character

Sanji Joestar

However Hody keeps mentioning how he received power from heaven and geographically speaking Fishman Island is vertically structured with the royalty at the top and the fishman district at the bottom And even in their own micro bubble, they're still directly below the other ''gods'' and their home of Mariejoie. I think the apple might be extrapolating on that symbolic. Also with Noah and Neptune, the god of the sea as Boldcast mentions.

100Rainy

Those few seconds of Hody's gang cackling as it cuts to shots of the mourning crowd at Otohime's funeral is such a powerfully disturbing scene imo. Really highlights just how sick and depraved they all are. God I would hate to know if anyone got that much joy over the death of someone I loved like that, Hody really is some kinda monster.

Sanji Joestar

Listening to you guys discuss the apple feels like having a look at the theory community from 2012 cooking. And it's always so much fun. 🔥🔥🔥

BOLDcast

No don’t apologize about it I completely understand you wanting to know what you are paying for! We will be watching and posting at least one episode of Orb tomorrow to start as well as another one before the end of the week. Now that we are a bit more settled in and are able to get back to it we will be posting two a week from now on. We haven’t 100% nailed down which days we will be posting Orb on YouTube yet but we are planning to start doing that next week as well. We really loved episode 3 and can’t wait to continue with the show. We are really sorry there has been such a delay since the first couple episodes but it should be much more consistent with 2 a week from now on!

Sanji Joestar

This whole episode was so good and the discussion even better. Hody is one of those characters that are either hit or miss for many people because it's not as straightforward of a message as other vilains. And by the time you get to the psyche of his character you either waited for it or didn't care. (The pacing genuinely doesn't help when you hear his same hollow(👀) speech strectched over 20 episodes.) For people invested it's extremely rewarding. And that's what makes this arc so genuinely great for me. Glad that you guys see that similar vision. It really builds a lot on what Otohime, Tiger but also Jinbe, Arlong, Shirahoshi, Nami and Luffy represent.

Sanji Joestar

Zoro praising Chopper for accepting his monster self is so good❤️❤️❤️He grows up so fast!

Martin Hagen

We talked about this in the discord the other day, appreantly the rebel army in Alabasta was 2,000,000 strong, which really seems absurd by the way the anime showed it 😅

ChocoBoshi

Hordy doesn't eat an apple in the manga but he does have the same star logo pretty prominently in this flashback and all of the dialogue is basically 1:1

Bighead

Ah thanks, that's great to know! Also I know I can always pester you guys in the comments under the guise of "having the rights because I pay for the content", but I'm aware it can get a bit annoying😅. TMI-I have ocd and can be a bit over bearing and impatient if there isn't a set schedule in all places of my life and then feel restless. So sorry in advance. I'll try not push my problems onto you with the incessant questions about orb in the future but there are no guarantees lol.

JJ

What’s going on with tbhx

BOLDcast

Episode 7 is recorded and we also just recorded our reactions to the character trailers today. Carson just needs to edit them and they will be posted within the next couple of days. Episode 8 will hopefully be posted on either Sunday or Monday along with episode 9

Hordy is crazy but in his perspective he is a martyr, willing to sacrifice everything for his cause. In his mind he is a hero. Unfortunately he is just living in alternate reality of his own making/environment. Truly a perfect representation of current state of the world.

Sanji Joestar

Bit of Sbs background about Young Shyarly and Arlong from that scene in the flashback. Q: Odacchi! Odacchi! On page 152 of Volume 65, there's a very sweet little mermaid wearing a hood, right? Could that be...Madam Sharley? PN- I'll be a Pirate. Oda: That's right. They call her Madam Shyarly, but she's only 29. Her brother, Arlong is 41 and Hody is 30, which means she's part of Hody's Generation. When Arlong was young, he was abandoned in the Fish-man District by his father, so he never really knew his dad. But when he was 15, a man claiming to be his father returned with a daughter he had with a different woman. That was Shyarly. By the way, it's said that when she was four years old, Shyarly predicted the " Great Age of Piracy " that began the following year.

Sanji Joestar

Oda was asked what was the name given to Jinbe's operation of making Luffy a hero. He responded: " Well, here were the candidates for Jinbe's plan: Operation Straw Hat Heroes, Operation I Love Humans, Operation Who Cares About History Anyway. Hmmm... Did it really need a name, anyway? Maybe it's better he never came up with one. " LOL

Sanji Joestar

Really love the expression Fukaboshi used " Return to Zero " It's just very powerful!

JJ

Thanks!

Matthew Gilroy

Connected the themes Oda explores here to an Attack on Titan quote. The Cycle of Hate: Hody Jones's actions, driven by a lifetime of prejudice and hatred, exemplify the consequences of growing up in a hateful environment and the difficulty of breaking free from such cycles. The Power of Love and Forgiveness: The story also explores the power of love and forgiveness, with characters like Otohime and Jimbei demonstrating the potential for positive change and reconciliation. "The world is cruel, but beautiful" - Mikasa Ackerman

Sonicluis

To me hody is an underrated villain because of what he represented and the message. Although not as good as other villain his usually the one I see the community never seem to understand. The nuisance and significant of hody character is actually amazing on a deep dive look into the world.

Brakthir

Need more of that orb fix. We getting more eps this week by any chance?

Oussama Essamadi

"You can't even kill my boredom" is absolutely one of my favorite Zoro lines. I truly applaud Oda for choosing a villain like Hordy as the introductory antagonist after the time-skip—someone much closer to real life, more realistic, and familiar.

millecamps

wait... if arlong's father returned when he was 5 with a daughter(shyarly) that would mean there is a 5 year diference max, but if arlong is 41 and shyarly is 29, there is a 12 years difference, it doesn't add up. would it not be when he was 15 years old that arlong's dad returned

Sanji Joestar

You're absolutely right I made a typo Thanks for that

Matthew Gilroy

Factual. Bold move by Oda. I don't think it worked sadly for most readers / watchers who have a shonen mentality going into it. Everyone caught up should rewatch it though. Just like Skypeia, just gets better and better the further we get in the story

Matthew Gilroy

Nah why would Toei take the time to add it in just to give "visual flair". Toei was pretty lazy during this period. They wouldn't have added the apple unless it was for a very important reason. I'm with Sanji Joestar on this one

Leighton

Said the same thing the first time I watched this arc

Ty

There are some shots where you think no way the army was that big. Some of the overhead shots make it seem like that’s possible though.

Fabulous

Hordy brought at least 100k with him as he mentioned in one of the episode and that was only from the fishmen district and plus human slaves

Veritas

There are so many theories and theses about One Piece in my mind over the years but Carson nailed one of my favorites on the head. Oda indeed pulls inspiration from countless random places (for instance Vander Decken and 2 of his goons are literally Dr. Seuss characters, not to mention all the Admirals being caricatures of actors) but the ones my corner of the fandom eats up are real history, mythos, and religions. My personal specialty is Christian symbology and parallels in One Piece, so I could go on for hours on the list of things I think Oda meant to convey ranging from the tiniest of details to things in plain sight. Thank you for pointing out the potential meaning of the star I think I missed until now.

Artemis

Hordy is a character that is for once not used as an extension of power scaling or to increase tension and stakes in the story. But more so a byproduct of the real issues and themes the story tries to tackle. It is by far the most misunderstood aspect of this arc from one piece fans.

Richie the Lion

Oda in my opinion captured essence of many modern terrorist groups. Most of them started as liberation movements to save their people and in time evolved into organizations that have no regards for their kinship using them as a resource.

100Rainy

@Matthew Gilroy Well first off it's a fact that it's not in the manga, there's no apples in the flashback period. Secondly there's no reason to think the anime team had any authority to add that level of symbolic subtext to Hody without Oda's supervision. Let's not forget that Toei loves taking any chance it can to add more filler, for better or worse but usually for worse. This here is a perfect example, a villain easily looks 10x more menacing when eating a blood red apple with a thousand-yard stare. However lazy you feel Toei was back then, something this small isn't exactly an inspired stroke of creative genius. It's a fairly simple and low effort change which conveniently also allows them to slightly drag out Hody's flashback just a bit. In fact I'm willing to bet this was the real reason they even added any apple eating to begin with.

Cheddah Slammer

Sadly I think it fails because most people watching don't feel the weight of Hordy message, just because he isn't a threat to our crew. On the other hand someone like Lucci gets praised because he is a threat, even though as a villain he is very standard.

Zoodinger

On the topic of religion in One Piece, the people of Hungeria were trying to summon the literal Satan when Brook showed up by accident.

Matthew Gilroy

Skypeia was very religious. The Priests worshipping a Hindu God Enel🤷🏾‍♂️

Oussama Essamadi

Lucci is a threat in the Shounen sense, whereas Hordy is a threat in an ideological sense. It's more about the what the major demographic of the show is than the villain or the message behind him is. Sure, One Piece is a Shounen series, but what really puts Oda above so many other Mangakas is that his storytelling pushes above strains of the genre. There is familiarity and an uncanny eeriness to the parallels Oda makes, parallels that unfortunately go over the head of many viewers. It's more of a "One Piece being mainstream" thing than anything else.

BOLDcast

That was as religious as the series got, but I was more thinking of religion as in like, when we go to a new town, there’s not a church that people go to every Sunday, or a temple that the public go to to worship their god (whether the god is a character or not) Like yeah there are religious references but religious practice and faith aren’t a big part of the lives of people in one piece up to this point outside of very particular cults

Terrance Matthews

@BOLDcast I like how Hordy’s backstory shows how he and his group where kids being taught to hate humans. Full circle of what Otohime said that you shouldn’t pass hatred on to children

Ty

For me the reason why it seems more purposeful is how the apple is used. In the scene all the colors are muted but the apple stands out brightly. There are a million ways they could have extended the scene but the chose one where the symbolism is very strong. Also even if they didn't intend for the symbolism to be there it fits perfectly.

100Rainy

@Ty I'm not arguing that there's no symbolism to be found whatsoever, there's clearly an intentional artistic choice made by the episode staff behind the inclusion of the apple and the colors used. It's not just filler for the sake of it. What I'm saying is it's certainly not to the degree that Carson was theorizing during the discussion. At least not to me. You'll just have to forgive me if I struggle to believe the same studio that chose to make up Hody and his friends being victims of human kidnappers as children truly understood his character well enough to also confidently weave in all these connections to religious themes and imagery. Feels more like pure coincidence than anything else. But we can agree to disagree.

Matthew Gilroy

Yeah. And not many of the population worship women. And certainly not to level of Sanji D. Womaniser, Absalom D. Creep, and Vander "P D. F File" Decken

Matthew Gilroy

Maybe Oda got pissed by that filler backstory scene and threatened Toei to add something really profound😂

Matthew Gilroy

BOLCAST yeah Nami and Robin's tits seem to be growing each arc. But I guess they were always that size, right?😂

Sanji Joestar

...Non sequitur of all Non sequitur

Matthew Gilroy

Me and Boldcast are saying that religion and worship aren't a big part of the lives of the OP population. Not everyone is a Sanji, Absalom, and Decken (that take worship very seriously - the worship of women, that is)😂

BOLDcast

I just wanted to give you another update. We ended up having a bit of a rough day and weren’t able to watch orb today. But it will be top priority for tomorrow. Really sorry again for yet another delay.

Bighead

No problem, thanks for letting me know!! Also hope you have a better day tmr!

Tony

@BOLDcast To add to the Fallen Star takes you said about Hordy's hat tied with Arlong and the apple scene God never told Eve to not eat from the forbidden fruit, he only told Adam which is why after he eats it, God sends them away from the garden So the Serpent is Arlong Eve is Hordy Jones And Adam are Hordy's followers

klairvoyage

great discussion, especially regarding the religious allegories
