A quote from Reddit about Haki I think you both would find fascinating -(I HAVE REMOVED ALL SPOILERS!) “I've come around on Haki. Zoro's got a great line in one of the translations for the Sea Train arc. He says, "the ego of the entropic world can be cut." Ego = Sense of self The entropic world = the world that decays, the physical world (as opposed to the world the doesn't decay, the timeless spiritual world) Zoro cuts stuff by convincing the universe that it has been cut. Cutting its sense of self. His sensei lays it out in the Mr. 1 fight flashbacks: strength doesn't cut steel, the swordsman's will does. The swordsman uses their sword as a focus for their will, the slices are to show the world what has been cut. That's how swordsmen are able to cut buildings and ships in half, but people are more resistant: they have a stronger sense of self than an inanimate object. We even see the process working in reverse when the Going Merry (a ship that developed an ego) was able to partially restore damage to itself on Skypiea. Haki is just that, more developed. Haki users are imposing their worldview on the world itself through sheer force of will. I reckon that's how attacks against logias work, too. You make an attack so irresistible that you convince a body that it has been cut, and armament Haki is the reinforcement of your own ego. It's anime stubbornness-as-superpower all the way down.”

In other words, to comment on your discussion about Vergo getting cut in the last episode. If someone’s “will” or “spirit” (which powers Haki) is stronger than someone else’s, then armament can’t help them. So when Law infuses haki into his sword, while in Room, if that Haki is stronger, he cuts through the armament of the other.

RedFaulkner

Conqueror’s Haki is so dangerous, BECAUSE it means that someone has such a strong conviction about something, that they are a Conqueror. This then empowers their other haki abilities. Thus, explaining why Luffy overpowered Caesar here. Of course, I’m going off of what I know. And I’m only a bit ahead of you guys. (So I don’t know much lol)

Capitano

So the anime, again, made Luffy look weaker by extending portions of the fight (like with Hody Jones). In this case they added a power struggle during the final clash of the episode. In the manga Luffy just grizzly magnums Caesar in the face and Caesar can do nothing about it.

Bighead

When do we get orb eps?

100Rainy

One of the rare instances where Luffy took out the 2nd strongest enemy of the arc, I think we can all agree that Vergo was leagues ahead of every other baddie on the island. But since Caesar was the big boss of Punk Hazard it only makes sense for Luffy to handle him in the end. Also I gotta point out, Caesar really tried it with that desperate last-minute bargaining lol. Really feels like a direct callback to Drum Island when Wapol did the same thing right before getting mopped.

Robbie Medica

While Vergo was technically "stronger" than Caesar, Caesar was a worse matchup for Luffy.

Sanji Joestar

Ngl I really like this take on Haki

Sanji Joestar

Honestly i doubt Luffy even needed Conquerors for that As in the manga there was no beam struggle But I really like how the fight still turned into a clash of 'Kings' Luffy future Pirate King and Conquerors user vs Cesar the self named King of the Land of death A fraud who can't even compete on that ring.

Sanji Joestar

Didn't want to set expectations so I didn't comment much but yes This arc is excellent and The pattern of ''this arc sucks'' but turns out it doesn't just gets stronger as time goes by. And that's hilarious.😂

Robbie Medica

People look at Enies Lobby with rose coloured glasses because of the peak moments, but boy was the pacing bad.

100Rainy

I see why you say that since he had 2 fair rounds against him and couldn't win, but honestly that's kinda Luffy's MO at this point. Lose at least once to learn what's possible and then clean up on the rematch. Once Luffy knew how his gas powers worked and got proper motivation from Momo to take him down, Caesar wasn't a problem for him at all. I feel like this was a legit no-diff win for Luffy. He would probably even breeze right through Vergo too. Poor Smoker was simply outmatched, but the only reason Law struggled at all was because of his stolen heart. A locked in Luffy makes a world of difference and no one on Punk Hazard stood a chance against that.

Sanji Joestar

And Luffy also sent Wapol flying with a bazooka The longest name yet '' Gum-Gum, Gum-Gum, Gum-Gum Bazooka '' 😂

Matthew Gilroy

Current Punk Hazard downplay is very simple. OP fans downplay previous Post-Timeskip arcs to hype up the current arc. Pre-Timeskip arcs do not apply to this trend.

Cheddah Slammer

Don't know, Vergo could still be taken out via Ceaser's taking away the air trick.

Fabulous

In the manga luffy one shots a lot of the weaker villains but anime makes it look like he is struggling on the last attack.

klairvoyage

Doubt it, Vergo would prolly be smart enough to just stay out of range after Caesar's first attempt & just Geppo back n forth to deal blows against him

Szonin

I don't know how you miss this, but sea prism stone cancels out devil fruit users and leaves them in a weak state like when they are underwater. Haki just lets people allow you to fight others who use Logia fruits. That's why Jimbei can hit Akainu but still get burned.

klairvoyage

True, but it's important to make the distinction between preventing the opponent from using their DF in the first place (like sea prism does) vs. blocking the effects of the opponent's DF abilities (after they've already been utilized) – and we don't know yet if Haki does the latter, which was their question in this episode, if I'm not mistaken.

I think there are two types of people that keep complaining about the pacing, people that expect every episode to cover 3- 4 chapters, which is not how that should work and people that read the Manga and expect the Anime to have the same pace. So for example the Grizly Magnum just hits Ceasar in the manga, its not a clash at all and that its a change to the pace of the scene, i personally don't like it but its the anime doing it own version, just like the walk to Arlong park is not in the manga but everyone love it beacuse most people didn't read those chapters first.

Jeremy Gullion

Not sure if it's already been mentioned but you guys might want to do the podcast for Punk Hazzard by itself. This entire saga is pretty long. So glad you guys are enjoying some of my favorite arcs which usually don't get a lot of love from OP fans, like Thriller Bark & Punk Hazzard. The next section on this saga is great as well, you guys are moving right along love your honest analysis, please continue it's so refreshing to listen to intelligent reactors that will give their critical honest opinions on my favorite series ever.

Oshidi

Or this arc and the next. Cuz it kinda ties together.

Jeremy Gullion

The next one would be the entire saga and would be well over 100 more episodes. Similar to how they split Sabaody, Amazon Lilly & Impel Down with Marineford which are all part of the Summit War saga I think splitting Punk Hazzard with the second half of the saga would be a good idea.

Ty

To me it makes the most sense to do a podcast for each arc at this point. Even the shorter ones deserve their own.

Jeremy Gullion

I agree, just don't know if they'd want to do that.

Solas

I think Vergo would know to watch out for Caesar taking away the air, since he’s close to Doffy he should know how his abilities work.

Arkham

I don’t necessarily agree, because the additions like the walk to Arlong Park and others much later on add a lot to the story. The clashes, running, and reactions are clearly meant to waste time and get abused to the point of absurdity. I think that difference in effort and intention is really grating.

emilio corvalan

Oh that is fair, i just meant that there are changes to the pacing that are obvious to the manga readers that Carson and Lindsay can't really notice, so when they hear people dreading the pacing it's not just people being mad about nothing

Sonicluis

I agree if they don’t want to do it now it’s better after next arc. Although thing will have drastically change.

Ariix

I personally don't think the actions of Caesar's subordinates are stupid. I think the anime doesn't give enough time to show his manipulation, but think about it - if the person who saved you, who seemed like an absolute saint to you for years, who you trusted your life with, suddenly said something absurdly evil, wouldn't you also doubt it and find an excuse for it?

Sonicluis

Facts. I’ve had close friends who, high school friends who change up on my and I don’t believe at first still. Now imagine that times 10 because they save your life.

ChocoBoshi

You guys talking about how the pacing isn't that bad feels like such vindication for the years of gaslighting I've been put through by others and even myself after a certain point. I think I've only really watched this arc once all the way through, whereas I've watched the entire pre-timeskip 4 times at this point, because I had it in my head that it had awful pacing and was boring.
