For me, this was the part when Orochi went from being annoying to being an amazing villain. All the decisions we've seen in Wano make so much more sense now, like the rules about disobeying guards in Udon. Orochi doesn't care about the diminishing workforce, it's just taking a little longer to destroy the country. Such a great villain for the arc

Spandam and Orochi is a great comparison I'll double down and say he's also a bizarro version of what could have been with Ace or Doflamingo Kids doomed by the father's/parents legacy, creating hatred they didn't deserve. Each of them show a different path they could lead but it's not entirely up to them and who they are, but it's also up to their environment and entourage. Without the Mountain Bandits and Luffy or Trebol and the enabling Donquixote Family we'd be in a very different story. And with Orochi we got the most despicable path. Power not even for oneself, but for the destruction of others.

I'm also reminded of Hody Jones, whereas Hody grew up in Fishman Island's ghetto, Orochi was persecuted by society as a whole in Wano

I honestly think Orochi is the best written villain in all of One Piece, and one of the best written parts of the entire Wano arc, just because he is so... underwhelming. He's not strong, he's not cunning, he's not charismatic, he's just reasonably lucky and meets the wrong people at the right time. He's probably the best representation of what a real world villain would look like, or how we readers/watchers would look like as villains. Like, we're no Doffy or Hordy or Katakuri. Orochi is great, because he shows what absolute hatred really does to a mfer. It wouldn't make you "cool"in the real word, like Carson said, that's an anime thing, it'll make you pathetic. And that's exactly what Orochi is.

On a narrative level, he isn't just evil for the sake of it he is a monster created by the flaws of Wano itself. He views his tyranny as a eye-for-an-eye punishment against the entire population that did him wrong. Oda purposely crafted orochi to be like a cowardly parasite with every act of malice he uses, which downright frustrates the audience for sure. He is the most hated man in one piece as oda wanted you to see him, complete evil incarnate without any morals or pride what so ever and thats what makes him more compelling.

Also this gotta be top 1 channel on comprehension next to heatah & hustlah, cuz few understand Odens actions, some mock him for the dancing and not immediately trying to fight kaido and Orochi but that’s the fact of it all is his regret and past actions and naivety made him trust that his promise would be kept, and even after - he had a chance to kill kaido if not for that trick with the copy copy fruit. So many little things that if had gone differently, wano would’ve had oden as lead, and perhaps oden would’ve left again to see WB and others. So sad, an OG being done in by petty tricks

My opinion is that Oda left too many gaps in Oden’s story and had Oden make too many dumb decisions, but it is what it is. I don’t like this story because of that, it feels like a contradiction: on one hand Oda tries to make Oden one of the coolest and strongest characters in the anime (because he’s the pure Japanese guy), but on the other hand he makes him look really dumb and selfish. For example, he continued his journey even when his retainers were telling him there were serious problems back home. Worst character ever.

I’ll be honest by saying that Wano was not my favorite arc when it came out, and I think in part was because of the influence from the fandom being very critical about it. But now rewatching it with you guys and seeing how much you are enjoying it is making me enjoy it too, which is relief to see One Piece as just something fun and enjoyable again.

Of course he did! Oda wants us to hate orochi but at the same time understand why he acts the way he does without trying to redeem him. Boldcast compared him to spandam and I agree but orochi is a much better villain imo oda hit his stride with how hateable orochi is
