cant wait for roof piece to start

Bootyman555

Genuinely Yamato is like the most controversial character in the whole series. My guess is you guys are going to get hate no matter which pronouns you use . In my experience, the vast majority of the fanbase refers to Yamato as a girl(she/her) but obviously I’m not gonna tell you what to do. So much of the controversy comes from Odas shit handling of Yamato to begin with, even the anime says “kaidos daughter.” Also there’s waaayyyy better trans representation in this show anyway like bon clay, inazuma, kiku, and ivankov so I don’t really blame normies for seeing a non-passing trans person and stuggling so hard with it. The one piece fandom is actually pretty good at respecting the other canon trans characters they just reallyyyyy have a hard time when it comes to Yamato. Can’t win them all I guess

Bootyman555

Also just as added context to this, there’s is a biiiiggg debate in the fanbase as to whether Yamato is even trans or not to begin with because most people think they “want to be oden and oden is a man” but hey man I’m going to leave that one alone and my advice is to you as well, typically I try not to use pronouns with Yamato at all because people like to get mad no matter what you do. Edit to this comment I’m going to place here: Degenericks comment reminded me of this, the one piece team (whoever does the merch/promotional stuff) also 100% DOES NOT respect yamatos identity whatsoever which also makes it really hard to tell what Oda was trying to do here (he’s not really involved with promotional stuff.) As far as I know (key phrase) Oda HIMSELF has actually never spoken about this at all so really unless someone asks him directly we will never get any more clarity on this

Degenerick

its funny how the internet still argues about yamato when literally next week the Card Game is releasing a set called HEROINES and it has Yamato in it (theres no guys in the set)

Sanji Joestar

You can actually notice Yamato during the execution after that one guys falls into the boiling oil. He's recognizable by the kimono pattern and bigger size compared to the crowd. You can even see his mask's hair in the anime.

idziman

I love Yamato, he's one of my favorite characters in Wano

Bob Bob

I thought you would get it right with Yamato, but you will see later more about her. There is a strong theory of Kaido calling Yamato his son, cause he wanted a male offspring. (Cannot be confirmed)! And Yamato is not calling herself a man, because she feels like a man, but rather is calling herself a man, because her Idol "Kozuki Oden" is a man. She doesnt want to be man, she wants to be Kozuki Oden and is mimicing him. Real transpeople in One Piece are "Ivankov, Bon- chan and Okiku". The Okama people are Crossdressers.

idziman

Wano really is just full of scenes where the animators were too excited and couldn't help themselves. Oden's reveal, Kaido's dragon form, Yamato under the mask. So many times it felt like the directors were like "Well, I wish I could have done that episode, so I'll just do it while I have the chance."

Sanji Joestar

Btw, Yamato is 28, Which is the age Momo would have been if he didn't time travel. Which reminds me Kaido is 59 and if Oden didn't die he would currently be 59 too.

Bootyman555

You just had to be there 🙂‍↕️🙏

Sanji Joestar

There's a lot of debate around Yamato no matter what you pick you'll get an upset mob. People use the title card as proof. Other simply use what literally everyone else calls Yamato, including Kaido. Imo the card isn't the key point people think it is.

VongoGai

Thanks for the episode, answering as I'm watching the episode but the kanji does say "musume" for "daughter" :D

2026-10-27 14:00 Oda's message to Kazuki Yao, the voice actor of Franky (and Mr2) when he had to step down as Franky's voice actor due to health issues. Iirc, don't quote me on it, his performance as Franky even inspired Franky in some ways. Or he had his voice in mind. Something along those lines.

Spoilers for Boldcast . . . . The '' he calls him a son because he wanted a son '' is high-key headcanon. Nor is it substantiated by the text. I recommend not misinforming them and removing that part of your comment. Edit: 🙏🏾 Awesome

What does a card game have to do with The narrative of the MANGA? The Distinction Between Self-Identity and Biological Sex / Marketing In the narrative of One Piece, Yamato's identity is tied directly to Kozuki Oden. Yamato uses male pronouns (boku), is referred to as Kaido's "son," I had to leave the rest out for spoilers. But that's just marketing, not the story ODA is telling

Degenerick

well the fact that its official and that Oda makes all the executive decisions over it? he has said it himself in an sbs about Yamato

Sakarael

the problem is Oda himself clearly doesn't see Yamato as a man. the controversy also only really existed in western countries to this extent as in the east everyone kinda knew she most likely wasn't really trans. Shortly after Oda drew the "Women of One Piece" color spread and it featured Yamato right in the middle of it. If he truly saw her as a man or wanted the community to see her as such, he really wouldn't have drawn her in the middle of a color spread with Nami, Robin, Rebecca, Boa, Ulti, Reiju etc.

Miko

i think the yamato thing is pretty simple and easy to understand, i always have and still call her a she

Richie the Lion

Yamato's character is obvious. Her goal is to be a samurai, which requires to behave: dress, speak like a noble man. Plenty of examples in Japanese novels. Modern Internet, especially Western, run with modern trans perspective. Same with Kiku: plenty of stories where man disquesed as women, usually to disguise their lineage to avenge their clan.

100Rainy

So Yamato...boy there's a LOT to say about Yamato but imo it's just way too early to bring all THAT up now, especially since you've only just been introduced to them. Giving full context behind the controversy of this character as well as my own opinions on it will be simply insufficient without getting into some spoiler territory. So for now, all I can say is he seems like a cool guy with a truly killer design. Probably one of Oda's best ever. Can't wait for you guys to see more of him.

2026-10-27 14:00 Personal opinion here: but Oda pretty much confirmed that Yamato is a she and a woman, when he - a relatively short time after - drew a color spread (and these are 100% drawn by himself) that was titled something like "Women of One Piece" and it included (in beach wear): Perona, Carrot, Boa, Otama, Bonney, Robin, Vivi, Koala, Ulti, Reiju, Shirahoshi, Nami, Tashigi, Rebecca, Mansherry, Sugar AND in the middle of them all Yamato. She was also the ONLY character in that color spread that was drawn with a visible side boob😭 Keeping it canon I guess.

Artemis

Also the title card in the manga still was officially listed as 'kaido's daughter'. This is not a translation problem like carson presumed.

BOLDcast

Why does Kaido call Yamato his son?

Bob Bob

There is a strong theory that Kaido wanted his Offspring to be male. Oda never confirmed it.

myridiann

cant wait for youtube comments when u upload this

Frizbeez

She idolizes Oden. Since Oden is a Man, she refers herself as a Man. She's not trans, she's not trying to be a man biologically. You guys are reading into it too deep and too wrong omg

dare

What makes the theory "strong"?

BOLDcast

“She refers to herself as a man” Would it not make sense to refer to someone as they prefer regardless of what they chose to do with their physical body? It doesn’t take extra effort or cause any harm to do so.

BOLDcast

That sounds like some real malarkey to me

Artemis

wrong, further context surrounding her upbringing actually confirms exactly why kaido refers to yamato as his son. So it is answered in the story you will just have to wait for further details.

Matess

Easiest way to understand the Yamato situation is that, since she wants to be Oden and Oden was a man, she calls herself a man, it is very different from Kiku. God knows why Kaido goes along with that shit tho lol

Sakarael

@BOLDcast I personally do agree with the theory that has already popped up in the comments here that it's due to misogyny. It's pretty much established at this point that women are generally weaker than men in the OP verse (you can take that as you will, but I think the evidence is pretty strong). The strongest characters are almost exclusively men. We got that entire Zoro flashback at the start of the series where it was said that a "woman could never be the strongest swordsman". Then we have Tashigi, who was initially introduced as some sort of rival for Zoro, only to end up being so much weaker than him, no matter how much she trained during the time-skip. We also have that scene where Enel zaps Robin unconscious, Zoro catches her and gets really pissed, saying "She's a woman!" as if that somehow means you should hold back against her. We see that again with Tashigi (rightfully) calling Zoro out for holding back against women in Punk Hazard. The strongest fighters among the Emperors and their crews are also almost exclusively men, and Big Mom, who I absolutely love, is clearly introduced as an anomaly. You probably don't know this, but the chapter where her flashback begins is literally called "Natural Born Destroyer", emphasizing that she was born as an exception to the rule. Other powerful female characters, like Viola or Sugar in Dressrosa, rely almost entirely on their Devil Fruits rather than their physical strength or fighting abilities. Like I said, I'm not really a fan of Oda's writing in that regard, but I think it's pretty well established that women are generally portrayed as weaker than men in One Piece. Now take Kaido, someone who is literally heralded as the "Strongest Creature", and his only child is a girl. I can very well imagine that when Yamato tells him she wants to be a man because Oden was a man, Kaido projects his own misogyny onto her and actually accepts that part of her identity, not because he respects her wishes, but because he'd rather have a son than a daughter. In his eyes, having a daughter might be something to be ashamed of, especially considering his obsession with strength. So instead of acknowledging that he has a daughter, he simply starts referring to Yamato as his son. It's only a theory, of course, but I think you guys will like it more the further you get into the arc and the more you see of Kaido and Yamato's relationship. I really hope this does not count as spoiler. It shouldn't cause it's still a theory.

I LOVE JOJO

Ah shit here we go again... Honestly, Boldcast, just use whatever pronouns you want, and to hell with what anyone else thinks. To be fair, this topic has sparked so many annoying debates within the community—on both sides—that I don’t even want to think about it. If you want to use masculine pronouns for him, then go ahead and use them.

Ty

To chat… Don’t let Oda being a little ambiguous on Yamato distract you from the fact that Kaido, and his crew and basically everyone calls Yamato “Kaido’s Son” Yamato refers to himself using male pronouns. Whether Yamato is trans, non binary or something else, it is undeniable that male pronouns are used.

Rozua

Yamato is more like an extreme case of a bokukko type character. A girl that uses masculine speech to refer to herself, since Japanese doesn't really have pronouns the way english does. This kind of anime trope is most common with delinquent girl characters. That's why Oda himself and the JP fandom treats Yamato as a girl.

Rozua

Also to add to this, Big Mom herself uses the same kind of masculine speech like "ore" and "omae" to refer to herself, but for some reason the translators didn't translate her's to "his" like they did with Yamato.

Sakarael

It's honestly insane how freaking tall Yamato is, like sure that's probably a given as Kaido's child, but damn. (Doesn't help that Oda and the anime are pretty inconsistent with height.)

John Spartan

Can't believe we're still debating this Yamato situation. It was always obvious to me what archetype Oda was using with her. That's why there was no discussion on the japanese side and all the noise was on the western side. I'm not saying it's wrong to call her "he/him". But I hope the comment section don't become hostile to people using the male or female pronouns for Yamato.

Artemis

SKIP boldcast if you have not seen EP 993 Why are people still so confused and dismissive of oda’s writing when it comes to the reason Kaido refers to Yamato as his son. It is really not that difficult to understand. Kaido wants Yamato to be his shogun and historically in the country of wano, all shogun are male, not female. It is actually just that simple. Because the land of wano is a highly oppressed country, it’s also why Yamato wants to embody oden’s persona because she knows that a woman has no worth in the country but to be just a geisha, a slave or one of orochi’s hand maidens. I see this much more as a commentary on Wano's rigid societal rules than a modern gender identity issue, because frankly, that's not what the narrative is telling you. If you look back at the early story and to add on to another users comment in here. Kuina famously despaired over hitting puberty and growing into a woman because she knew the structural rules of the world were rigged against female swordsmen. She disapproved of her gender because of the imposed Strick regulated conditioning against women joining military rank. Yamato is dealing with the exact same reality. In an oppressive world ruled by men, taking on Oden's identity was the only viable way to claim her own strength and agency. It's also pure, unadulterated admiration for how free Oden was once he escaped Wano and joined Roger's crew. It is completely about inheriting a legendary legacy, not a gender transition. I saw it all when these chapters were published, this is probably one of the most intense controversial debates in one piece history and it all started with the fandom mechanically engineering their own progressive narrative the second Oda dropped the surface-level line where Yamato says she "chose to be a man." Honestly, given how Oda loves to write complex societal structures, he’s probably laughing his ass off at how western fans ran with this. Also using masculine speech or heavy pronouns doesn’t automatically mean a character is having a gender identity crisis. In Japanese media, characters frequently use distinct speech styles to convey a different vibe. When a female character uses traditionally rough or masculine pronouns, it’s usually just a narrative tool to show empowerment, fearlessness, and raw strength. A perfect example of this is Big Mom, she is undeniably a woman, but her speech patterns and pronouns are intensely masculine because she rules through sheer force and intimidation right? So male pronouns doesn't automatically make this a progressive trans thing, Jesus. like oda himself said in SBS Volume 109 "This is a matter of reading comprehension."

Oussama Essamadi

Kaido’s son/daughter. There it is, even Oda is unsure about the gender lol.

Rozua

There are no "male pronouns" in Japanese. And it's not an uncommon trope in anime to refer to tomboy characters with masculine type speech. There's a reason why Yamato's identity is not a hot topic in the JP fandom, it's an entirely western thing unable to understand anime tropes.

JoshVPlays

Yamato is probably the most controversial character in One Piece because Oda doesn’t do a good job writing them especially in comparison to other LGBTQ characters. ALSO you’re literally faced with better handling in another character in Kiku in this arc. Plus as others said the OP promo team also made things more complicated. So yeaaaa it’s a mixed bag. Yamato is cool though even with the issues.

Gogul Prasad

Ok I have to say it. I’m way too distracted by whatever is on Lindsay’s hair

100Rainy

That's basically how I see it. The exact reasons behind why can be debated forever. The fact is Yamato identifies as male. He uses a non-feminine dialect. People all around Yamato speak to and address him in masculine terms. And most importantly his identity and fascination with Oden isn't treated as just some gag or joke, it's a pretty serious and hugely integral aspect of the character. And so with all that, I'm just gonna go with how the story overwhelmingly presents it. Yamato's a guy. Simple as that.

Ty

Are you Japanese? If you are maybe you can help me understand some things genuinely. I understand that Japanese pronouns aren’t as hard coded as they are in other languages but using pronouns typically used for men and then also calling Yamato “Kaidos son” seems to point to those pronouns being male. This isn’t a tomboy situation, the character and those around him use the word “son” I think I would agree with your interpretation more if it was just the pronouns being used but with Yamato the pronouns used are solidified by the fact that Yamato refers to himself as kaidos son.

Nazim Belaidi

Oh, he definitely knows but won't say anything because he is a genius in marketing and engagement; he plays it both ways, and it's obviously working.

The_Kombat_King

So it’s been a minute so I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Oda has come out and said Yamato wasn’t trans it’s just a fan thing. However, personally Yamato always felt like a character you can give any pronoun to and it could fit. It’s not a important so idk why this became such a debate

SomeoneElse

Queue the gender debate 😂 I personally believe Yamato doesn't care if you call them he or she. As long as you don't tell them what they're not or can't be, it's cool. I usually refer to Yamato as she, but only because I'm lazy. Otherwise, I'll say they/them 😉

Sirove

Meet the most controversial character in the history of one piece. Nobody really know if he’s trans or if she’s a girl because of oda’s inability to be clear. From in show interaction we can think he’s a man but from vivre card / oda’s cover / official traduction it tend more to be a girl. The greatest advice I can give you is to just think of Yamato as a living being and not fall in the controversy cause I don’t think the community as ever been as toxic around smth that this character

on1dino

And Yamato shows herself

SomeoneElse

Does Oda fail the Bechdel test? I feel like there have many reasonably strong females with their own goals that are separate from the male MC? And even more so if you consider forms of strength that aren't physical/fight related. I also can definitely understand people seeing the Okamas as offensive caricatures. I see them as depictions of how a large portion of society views them, and the point is simply that they are happy with who they are, despite that. Conventionalism and beauty standards turn to nothing in the face of genuine self acceptance. Besides Sanji, no other character has expressed a disliking toward them, which is probably interesting?

Duffy the Nar Slayer

One piece has weak female characters?... Don't know if I agree with that, I know Oda has a certain way of drawing female characters, but I wouldn't characterize them as weak. Nami, Robin, Vivi, Big Mom, Yamato, Hancock, Ulti, Black Maria, Tsuru, Smoothie, Hina, Whitey Bay, Shakky, Queen Otohime, and a number of other characters. Yea some of these characters are physically weak but most of them aren't and none of them are characterized as being weak women. I would say an example of a weak female character is Sakura, though she is physically strong she is characterized as weak with her story, on the other hand Hinata has a similar story to Sakura throughout Naruto, though she is significantly physically weaker than Sakura her story shows her as a much stronger woman and character than Sakura's.

Cheddah Slammer

I think it goes back to a cultural thing that westerners don't have. Their exists a type of cosplayer in Japan, that loves an Anime character so much that they not only dress as them, but act like the character for an entire event. However said cosplayer's gender doesn't change to match said character they are cosplaying. It becomes a joke moment to claim their the characters gender, while also keeping their own gender. Oda was just playing homage to this one cultural aspect of Japan, but it doesn't translate well to westerners, who don't have anything like that in their culture. So westerners translated it as if Yamato was a Trans character, when in reality it was something else entirely. Also for people in Japan this would be easily recognizable in the story and completely different from Kiku, because they know what it is.

Cheddah Slammer

So I am going to put this in the comments instead of just a response to something. I think the Gender thing with Yamato goes back to a cultural thing that westerners don't have. So westerners translated it as if Yamato was a Trans character, when in reality it had nothing to do with that. Also for people in Japan this would be easily recognizable in the story and completely different from Kiku, because they know what it representing.

Sanji Joestar

Agree. Honestly they're all amazing. I assume the Bechdel test comment was also a joke but One piece passes it with flying colors. Which doesn't mean much because it's still a pretty bad metric for gauging female character writing. You could read a story only including women and it could still be the most misogynistic thing ever.

Sanji Joestar

The color spread wasn't titled anything as far as i recall so I'm not sure where you got that from.

Solas

Oda actually put Kaido’s daughter in the title card that’s why Toei did that too. You guys can do whatever with the pronouns just expect pushback on whatever you choose and ignore it because this character causes so much controversy. I just try to say Yamato and refuse to use any pronouns at all

testlunch

This makes the most sense to me. It's not about what any one person thinks of the character, if the character specifically identifies as something then it seems respectful to do the same. Even if some people don't consider them to "actually" be trans, like they're the authority. At the end of the day, it's not other peoples place to put their ideals of what is and is not someone's identity.

Solas

So you saying Yamato is similar to Mulan? Lol

testlunch

At the end of the day, do the reasons for why someone identifies as something matter? If Yamato wants to be Oden, and Oden is a man, then it sounds like Yamato wants to be a man. To me it sounds like you're just saying the same thing really.

Sakarael

@Sanji Joestar I know that Color Spreads technically aren't titled but they do sort of get promotional texts. And if you look at the Japanese text on the Color Spead (you can just google it) it says: 「ONE PIECE Girl's 大集合!!! 夏!水着!美女祭り~~~っ!!」 which means "ONE PIECE Girls’ Great Gathering!!! Summer! Swimsuits! Beauty Festival~~~!!"

testlunch

All this just sounds to me like you're saying that Yamato identifies as a man.

testlunch

Really great discussion! Really enjoyed the comparison between One Piece and Naruto especially. You guys always do it the best! I will say though that I think there are plenty of strong female characters in One Piece, like many others have pointed out. I think that, while Oda does seem to try his best to represent everyone, he does tend to lean into stereotypes. Which I think can be done in an appropriate and respectful way, but does he always nail it... maybe not. Still, there's a lot about what he does that I respect, even if there is plenty to criticize as well.

Sanji Joestar

Sure But how is that the definitive irrefutable conclusion if it's again just a color spread with promotional flavor text. Yes it's only female designs, but It seems clear to me Oda's idea for Yamato isn't so black and white that this color spread is the ultimate proof. Especially when the more actual canon has a pretty definite answer to that

C

respecting trans identity is about respecting the other persons choice of identify. They don't have to suddenly conform to every gender norm and role

Sanji Joestar

Also I did check the spread earlier and unless the one you have is different the one i found doesn't have the same text description. Maybe I missed it.

C

Cherry picking examples and saying this one thing is clear proof when there are so many examples saying the opposite. At the end of the day, Yamato within the story prefers to have male pronouns and whatever you think that reason might be I still think it is best to respect those wishes.

DuLee

There is no debate on this unless you have a certain ideology of yours you’re trying to push one way or the other. She wants to be Oden. If Oden was an Alien she’d still want to be like him. Being a man is a byproduct of being Oden. That’s it. She does things as Oden does.

C

Yo Sanji Joestar, btw I highkey respect the good work you are doing. I see you in these comments giving good takes, media literacy and relevant information on the story without spoiling.

Sanji Joestar

♥️🤧I appreciate the feedback, just trying my best fr. I hope I'm not messing up too much either.

C

Simply put Yamato prefers to be called a man so I think it is best practice to do so. I don't think its a huge deal, certainly not something to throw hate peoples way for. But I think it is pretty cut and dry since that is all that matters. People will use random cherrypicked sources like vivre card, or some random card game set to call yamato her and people will respond with things like how yamato is refered to as son and whatnot. But the only thing that is worth considering is what Yamato wants to identify himself as which is a man. And no matter what that reason is I think that should be respected because why not?

Sakarael

@C brother, this is a fictional character. I have zero respect for something that doesn't exist. My respect is reserved for actual people, and to put your mind at ease, I have never in my life misgendered a single real person.

Veritas

Fun fact! Regardless of the final product or controversy, Oda originally had a flipped version of Yamato according to his concept art notes, which did not become canon. In one sketch, it was Kaido who forced the idea of her being his son because he wanted a son. But Yamato hated that and quotes: "I'm a woman!" Of course I doubt Oda stuck with that for long, he has many sketches.

Sakarael

@Sanji Joestar Ah shit, I messed up. The text I sent appears to be from a really big Japanese blog promoting the color spread, not from Shueisha. Sorry for that, I was literally just goggling for promotional text and found it instantly through Gemini, so yeah, check your sources, I guess. Truly my bad. So yeah, there is nothing explicitly labeling this a "female-only" picture, but I still think it's undoubtedly supposed to be one. At least that's how I see it. And to connect to that, I never said that this was irrefutable or definitive evidence. That's why I put "Personal opinion here:" at the start of my origional comment. I realize that for many people this topic is highly contested, and as you could hopefully tell, I'm not really someone who thinks people should call her this or that. I've just convinced myself that, for Oda especially, but also because of all the promotional stuff, the color spread and more, Japan (so Oda's main audience) mainly seems to view Yamato as a woman. And I do think that if her gender identity were such an important topic for Oda, he wouldn't let that slide so easily. But that's just my two cents. SPOILER Frankly, I don't care about Yamato all that much. She looks insanely cool, probably a top 20 character design in the entire story, but I find her character lackluster at best. She just didn't grab me, even though there are some cool bits in her backstory. You're allowed to like her, you're allowed to love her, and you're also allowed to feel the opposite. Taste is subjective. I just found the vitriol of entire communities insulting each other, with one side accusing people of being too stupid to read and the other calling everyone transphobes, extremely exhausting, so I never really engaged with the topic too much.

Sanji Joestar

And that's why Ai search results are never to be trusted. I'm pretty sure it hallucinated that from people using the spread as a confirmation of biases. Either way I think you should mention in your original comment that that's not the case for the spread. Also please avoid discussion your take on a character they just met, especially the parts informed by stuff yet to come, it's still kind of spoilery. They're not there yet. Or atleast Spoiler mark it

hello! this is gonna be a long comment so i apologize in advance i just have a lot to say. i normally never comment but i just wanted to say i LOVE your guys' discussion at the end and i appreciate your comments on this vid i'm seeing as well. as someone who is part of the lgbtq+ community, you guys are a breath of fresh air. basically all of the big reactors immediately refer to yamato as "she" and don't really take the ambiguous aspect of yamato seriously. you guys already brought up that there have been a handful of queer characters before and although they might not be the best representation, at the end of the day they're still done on purpose so oda is clearly aware there are different identities in the community as well as different "portrayals" of them. i do see people saying there's no "he" pronouns in japanese, but there has to be some reason as to why english subtitles refer to him as he, as well as a few other instances you'll see in the future. although yamato is often categorized with other one piece women in official things, i think because he's still ambiguous that it's valid and reasonable for a lot of people to refer to yamato as "he" and headcanon him as trans. i believe people immediately refer to him as a woman because he's not "physically passing" in which that's a harmful stigma and i personally believe that there's no "specific look to be trans" (i'm also aware a lot of people don't agree with that). i also wanted to touch on you guys bringing up how most of the one piece community seems pretty progressive. i agree that there's a way larger group of people who are one piece fans that are progressive compared to fans of other series and that's probably due to the issues oda chooses to touch on and the way he negatively portrays them, however there's also a huge group of people who aren't progressive. it might be because you guys are more progressive yourselves so you attract viewers who also are and keep them, but there's SO many dudebros (as a lot of people call them) who are conservative and don't even think a lot of animes are political at all including one piece. sorry again for this long ass comment that's probably not even comprehensible, but at the end of the day i wanted to thank you guys for your take on the matter regarding yamato :)

Sakarael

I didn't say anything spoilery though, did I? I'm looking at the comment right now and don't really see it? I'll change my first comment though!

Szonin

I love Yamato.

Kiki Varas

I just call Yamato with male pronouns. It just makes sense for me but if you think otherwise that’s fine. I feel like some ppl overthink it. Yamato is referred as Odens son and wants to be Oden so I will refer to Yamato as a man. Simple as that. There is also things and scenes that happen in the future which I won’t spoil but clearly shows that the rest of the Straw Hats views Yamato as a man. Ppl try to nitpick so bad but if in the story Yamato says he wants to be like oden and is said to be odens son then it’s as simple as using male pronouns, That’s it. If you think otherwise that’s fine I just think ppl over complicate it. If Yamato wants to be oden so badly and called a son then I don’t see the big deal in referring to him as a man. I’m not gonna over analyze every little scene and debate over it. If Yamato refers to himself as a man then I will too. 🤷

Szonin

I also read that he made Franky after hearing Yao's voice.

Sanji Joestar

Spoilers . . . . . Just to make it clear, Saying a character is lackluster, or that there's ''cool bits'' to a backstory to explore IS setting up expectations, whether you intend to or not. I know that's not your goal but just in case. Thanks for spoiler marking.

Juan Sebastian Mercado

You couldn't pay me to look into this comment section... I can just imagine how it is

BTImelesS

Yamato is a man. Insecure men can't accept him because they are bigoted. There is nothing ambiguous, he tells us himself that he is a man. He NEVER says he is a woman. But again, bigoted people cannot accept peoples identities, they have have to define them according to their insecurities.

Dragon Fire

That's a really weird way to reach to a conclusion. Yamato doesn't have any problems with her gender, the way she looks or the way her body is. She has idolized Oden, thus sees herself as Oden. If tomorrow she got over Oden, then suddenly she would be a women again, just like before she "met" Oden. And yeah, it is extremely crucial that we know why someone does/thinks something.

BTImelesS

He does confirm his identity at the end of Wano. You just don't want to accept his identity because of your own reasons so you 'll use whatever color spreads or vivre cards but not the actual story. Yamato says it himself, he's a man. He keeps saying it to you but you are "no, boobs, so woman". That's something you have to work on. When someone tells you their gender, you can either accept their gender identity or be a bigot, there is no middle ground.

BTImelesS

Yamato is calling himself a man. Completely and unumbigiously. Your own insecurities doesn't matter, Yamato is a man. He calls himself a man and later he further completely confirms it in the end of Wano. You just don't want to accept it, but that's a you problem.

BTImelesS

Kiku literally says she's a woman at heart, it's not about "western internet" it's about bigoted little men who can't get over their insecurities.

BTImelesS

What SBS are you talking about?

BTImelesS

Yeah, he wants to be Oden, he wants to be a man, not an alien. So why are you not letting him be called as he identifies himself? Being a man could be a byproduct of whatever they want, he's still a man.

BTImelesS

So, from the story he's a man, from outside the story in vivre cards and cover he's not a man? So in the story, where we're at he's a man, not that difficult.

John Spartan

Rants aside, Yamato is voiced by the GOAT Saori Hayami, who usually has a very distinctic soft tone, with characters like Shinobu (KnY), Anju, Yor, Visha and many others. But it's not so easy to recognice with characters like Fubuki (OPM) or Yamato.

DuLee

Then stop calling him Yamato and call him Oden. You don’t just stop halfway and continue deadnaming.

Bob Bob

Ok. Whatever. Im gonna stay to facts and reading comprehension, instead of personal identity feelings to a fictional character.

Sanji Joestar

@btimeless Spoiler warning please

David P

Personally, Yamato wants to be Oden, so she refers to herself as a guy. If Oden was a woman, she would refer to herself as a woman. It comes from extreme admiration, not gender identity imo. But there’s arguments for both, because Oda gave reasons for both. Although then you have Oda adding Yamato in the “Girls of One Piece color spread” lol so maybe that was the most direct statement we’ll get from him. But hey! There’s always the amazing character of Kiku ! So it works fine either way.

Mark Anton

Honestly the mulan comparison is weirdly fitting

David P

What about the color spread of “Woman of One Piece “ and Vibre cards ?

Coqnbauz

The Beast Pirates might be evil fascistic monsters but they draw the line at transphobia 🗣 Also I think I’ve seen it reported before that one of Oda’s closest friends happens to be a drag queen so that explains why he’s so accepting of LGBTQ people

David P

True Sanji Joestar, you are truly the goat in the comments. Thanks for all the hard work bro

Coqnbauz

I think either Invankov or Bon Clay’s personality is partially based on that friend of his - I forget which

David P

Yeah.. he was either joking or gave one of his worst takes since episode 1 lol

Drakojin

🍿🍿🍿

Vinny C

It's really funny for people to watch 1100+ episodes of a show and not understand the overt politics of it. Anyway, don't listen to the transphobes

BTImelesS

He introduces himself as Yamato so I'm calling him by the name he chooses.

Sanji Joestar

There's no ''Women of One piece" color spread, as mentioned by the other comment. Yes it features many female designs but the topic is more wide than just a color spread and I don't think Oda sees it as black and while topic. More importantly the actual canon is pretty clear on the topic. And disregarding that to choose external sources as more relevant is questionable. Talking about external sources. For the Vivre cards, I'm gonna be honest they're awful source of informations half the time. Either they're straight up provably incorrect, retconned soon after or just vague enough that it passes or it's something not even in the actual story. And it seems those behind the Vivre card of Yamato were basing its description on the title card. More importantly, Oda is not the one writing them nor is he supervising them(As mentioned by Greg Werner, who worked on One Piece). Same thing for databooks and stuff, he'd recommend them if the audience wants to see more trivia etc. but it's not his final stamp or an actual replacement for the story. So take them with a cup of salt.

DuLee

I respect that

Luis Mira

I think Kaido wanted a son and thats why he's ok with that

Murkou

@BTimelesS This is the kind of woke 1 bullshit that weirds normal people out lol. Stop assuming people are bigots, just because they dont think yamato is trans, this is some terminally online shit. Yamato doesnt give a fuck if someone calls them women or man, she just wants to be seen as Oden. Its weird to turn this into a conversation revolving about real life bigotry, if someone in real life claimed they are a specific person of history, we would assume that they are mentally ill.

Murkou

No, he calls himself Oden. And Oden is a man. This isnt a trans thing. Not really a problem for us, not thinking that yamato is trans doesnt have any effect on my or anyones life lol

BOLDcast

On the “I have zero respect for something that doesn’t exist” I’d like to hear that energy when we critique the writing of one piece, be it the reveals or the logical consistency, or when we theorize about Oda’s development process. When we question the integrity of the story, we get clowned on for not showing respect. But when we show respect to a conversation around trans people (and their pronouns despite contrary representation), now it’s not worthy of respect? Tbf I’m not trying to call you out for shitting on our discussions, I just think that if we’re talking about respect, I think it should be applied evenly across all aspects of discussion

Jura

Everyone should call Yamato however they want imo. People lose me when they start calling everyone who refers to Yamato as "she" transphobes, that's obviously not what's happening here.

leno ;;

i really enjoyed the discussion about how one piece is very anti establishment while naruto is the opposite. i have thought it often myself and its why one piece plot resonates with me more.

Samrathpal Singh Thind

Why don’t we bring garp cucked theory from impel down back and apply that to kaido and oden

Sakarael

@BOLDcast I don't remember ever shitting on you for your discussions? I remember back when you took a break because you felt burned out, when you started feeling like everything you said, loved, critiqued, etc. was somehow wrong, to the point where it became impossible for you to enjoy One Piece. I felt pretty shitty about that, and I think I even left a comment back then about how much I loved your discussions. That's the worst part of the One Piece community. One Piece is no sacred text. Oda is no god. He's an author. Sometimes a great one, sometimes a not-so-great one. Speak your truth, speak your minds. I enjoy your discussions no matter what you have to say, as long as you engage thoughtfully with the story, which you do. That's why I and many others are here. That's why I barely watch any reactors who just scream around all day without really engaging with the story at all. And on the note of "I have zero respect," I now realize that it sounds a bit harsh. But all I wanted to say was that fictional characters are just that. Fictional. And so are stories. Their value lies, at least in part, in provoking thought. I enjoy a character based on how they speak to me, how they might challenge my views, offer me new perspectives, or explore certain themes. The same goes for a story. You don't put a story or a character on a pedestal and make them an end in themselves. I know this is a pretty contested topic in literature, and literature can certainly be an end in itself. It can be beautiful simply because it is beautiful, without needing to serve some greater purpose. But that still doesn't give it the same inherent worth as a human person. That's what I meant.

Dragon Fire

Being transgender has a specific definition. She does NOT fit that definition, thus she is not transgender.

Leighton

Both of Law’s crewmates’ names match their hats, Penguin and Sachi(orca whale)

Sceeze 1

Yamato refers to himself as a man, thus I refer to him as a man.

Artemis

its actually extreme admiration and the external societal restrictions placed on women. It is a combination of both. If wano was led by women, the whole thing would be flipped upside down. So as you said she grew up in a environment and world of an oppressive society were most female are just geisha's slaves or handmaidens. How ever there are those men who became strong samurai revolted and stood as heroes to the people of wano and oden was one of those legendary figures. Kiku is also more complex then people think. Its not a reflection of just someone denying there gender and becoming trans like in the modern 20th century due to medical or biological change. 20th or 21st-century Western political lens completely strips away the rich historical and cultural traditions Oda used to build her character. This goes back to traditional Japanese theater and history, the exact setting Wano is based on, her identity aligns with the concept of the Wakashu and the artistic tradition of the Onnagata (male actors who completely embody femininity on stage and in daily life to achieve an idealized womanhood). Unlike modern trans discussions that focus heavily on individual autonomy, medical transition, or biological categorization, Kiku’s character is about harmony (WA), trying to show that spiritual sincerity. There is always these kinds of cultural complex systems that get lost in translation or just misinterpreted entirely by the general fandom because alot of people view it through a modern lens.

testlunch

@Dragon Fire "That's a really weird way to reach to a conclusion" How so? "Yamato doesn't have any problems with her gender, the way she looks or the way her body is" None of that is the end all be all of being trans. "If tomorrow she got over Oden, then suddenly she would be a women again, just like before she "met" Oden" So far he hasn't "gotten over" Oden though, so how can you know? @Murkou "This isnt a trans thing" Just because it doesn't fit your idea of what a trans is, doesn't change what Yamato identifies as. If Yamato wanted to be a female version of Oden I'm sure he would have, he specifically identifies as a man though. "not thinking that yamato is trans doesnt have any effect on my or anyones life lol" If that were true you wouldn't be making this comment. Clearly it means something to you.

Fabulous

Yamato is a biological woman as mentioned in her Vivre Card.

Stick Haul

yamato is confusing for a number of reasons, mostly due to lack of explanation from oda and just zero comments from the characters at all. so, like the rest of the cast, i will simply not worry about it

Artemis

Do you know what 'women at heart' means in terms of the historical context of wano and the circumstances that led her to believe that. It isn't nothing to do with a medical necessity or a desire to change one's sex. These are looking at things through a modern lens and so yes Richie is right in this respect. Okiku's circumstances is deeply rooted around theater and about harmony ("Wa"), lineage, and spiritual sincerity. Her identity aligns with the concept of the Wakashu and the artistic tradition of the Onnagata. That is a concept to explain a person in theater who embodys femininity on stage and in daily life to achieve an idealized womanhood. Your entire existence, your speech, your clothing, your presentation, is an extension of your duty and your loyalty as a samurai. "Kiku literally says she's a woman at heart, it's not about "western internet" it's about bigoted little men who can't get over their insecurities." If this were just about "bigoted little men who can't get over their insecurities," then the community wouldn't universally love and defend characters like Bon Clay and Ivankov. Those characters are real, old-school transgressive stereotypes. The word "Okama" is fundamentally about taking on a loud, flamboyant style of theatrical rebellion. It is heavily rooted in 1980s and 90s Japanese drag cabaret, cross-dressing, and counter-culture. People need to understand the difference here and especially with yamato who clearly shows no sign of a gender identity crises, she was born in an oppressive male dominant society and one of her greatest heroes happens to be a man. Instead of taking on the role as a Geisha, slave or handmaiden, she chose the role of ODEN to embody that persona because it means pure freedom and liberation from her past. It is a societal stricture placed upon her gender, coupled with strong admiration.

Artemis

It is definitely a culture clash and viewing things through a western modern lens of transexuals. most of this stuff is deeply rooted in Japanese theater, like (Okiku, Kanjuro) spirituality and historical samurai culture which completely flies right over most non-Japanese fandoms. This is why we have fansubs back in the old days because they provided TN notes that describe those historical background context that otherwise gets lost in translation or completely misinterpreted.

Matthew Gilroy

Sakarael, admit you just got cooked by the big dogs themselves. No need for think piece rebuttals👍🏾

Matthew Gilroy

Yeah. Acting like Luffy specifically won't get you far in life though. It's also a pretty dangerous mindset. Dreams over everything else? Unrealistic sadly. I'll take someone like Josuke or Mista from Jojo's philosophy any day of the week. Accepting and acknowledging reality, and bravely not letting it get you down, and making the most from it that you personally want to. It's more realistic. You can accept that reality is often harsh. Doesn't mean we still can't make Great Days

Luquinhas 90

such a great conversation at the end

BOLDcast

I understand what you meant and I wanted to make it clear in that comment, and I should have made it even more clear, that I don’t think you shat on us for our critiques. But I think a lot of people in the one piece community would use that logic of “there’s no reason to respect this decision because it’s a fictional character” as well People pull that out in mushoku tensei discussions and it can be infuriating. But tbc were thankful of your support and for your engagement in our discussions and for having our back. We aren’t trying to blame you for anything or put any of that on you

Shark

great discussion

Snuzzlebumble

You're going to get hate no matter what with Yamato. But in the series, Yamato refers to himself as a man. I do like this, as it spits in the face of the stereotype that to be trans you MUST PASS as the opposite sex. To Yamato, he is a man because he identifies with/as Oden, who is a man. So Yamato uses male pronouns in the story, to refer to himself and everyone on Kaido's crew respects that. WOKE KAIDO! But, there are fans who insist to ignore Yamato's preferred pronouns and still refer to him as "she/her" regardless of what the character uses. Not all of those people are anti-trans weirdos, but some of them definitely are.

BTImelesS

You don't have to have an identity crisis to be a man. Yamato feels is a man and identified himself as a man. Still, you refuse to call him a man for your own reasons. Kiku did not "disguise herself as a woman to avenge her clan", she is a woman at heart. That's who she is and she's not hiding it. If someone embodies that persona to feel freedom and liberation then why the fuck would you not respect that and call him as he's presenting himself? That's where insecure little bitoed men come into play. And saying that the fandom has accepted Ivankov with no caveats is a joke. I guess you were absent even at this community's comments when Ivankov was introduced?

BTImelesS

Indeed, even Peter Thiel is a One Piece fan 😅 You hit the nail in the head with " believe people immediately refer to him as a woman because he's not "physically passing" in which that's a harmful stigma", that's the main issue here.

BTImelesS

Oda is giving you a story about a character that feels most free when he's a man and he's idolizing Oden, a famous character in One Piece. He's also making it absolutely clear in the end of this arc, which I 'm sure you 'll find a way to dismiss. I won't go into spoilers because we'll be here so what's the point, we 'll see then. But instead of reading the text as a character who finds his most freedom, when he can be himself, he can express himself as the person who he idolizes and live like him, you dismiss that because what? Because Wano society is sexist? How is that mutually exclusive? Yes Wano and Japanese society is sexist and yes a lot of queer people in Japan has found ways to avoid persecution while expressing their identity. Is this the Terf analysis? What are you even saying? The reasons behind why he wants to be Oden and why he feels like that's both his idol and his gender expression make this even better writing. The freedom he feels as you say is the freedom that a lot of people feel when they can express themselves without society telling them that "ehmm, actually, you want to be Oden, not a man so you are not a man, you are a woman because I don't approve of the reasons you feel the way you feel".

BOLDcast

I genuinely think they think Yamato is hot and don’t want to contend with that confusion

Stinky Pete

@Murkou When has Yamato ever referred to themself as a woman? Never.

Stinky Pete

Which goes against everything the people in the manga say, so probably not as simple and easy to understand as you think.

Stinky Pete

Are you really saying Kiku isn't a woman? Honestly, transphobes have no place in this fandom. They genuinely cannot comprehend lifestyles different from their own. I'm surprised they can make it as far as wano tbh.

JOSHUA BOULDIN

🎉👏🎉👏🎉YAMATO!!!🎉👏🎉👏🎉 It's also kinda perfect that a bunch of trans characters are included in this arch given how queer the period of Japan Wano is based on seemed to be given kabuki and kagema culture aspect of feudal society at the time.

Miko

Seems pretty simple to me considering what oda showed in the age 40 and age 60 drawings he does. Notice what she was still calling herself in the bad timeline and what it lead to at age 60. Its just her larping and trying to be someone else instead of her own person. And we know oda doesn't really have that in mind with her because he included her in the one piece girls color spread with all the other girls. So it's pretty cut and dry to me for that reason

Ariix

Yamato's gender is and will always be a hot topic. I think it's most reasonable to just go with he/him. Doesn't matter if you actually believe him to be trans or something else, but he/him is the closest english translation we have to the pronouns he uses, plus he unambiguously calls himself Kaido's son. So rather than worrying over the interpretation of his gender identity or the strict definition (though it's fine to talk about that as well as I find it interesting, but it can lead to getting unnecessary hate), going with what he calls himself seems safest.

Cheddah Slammer

I want to throw out their adding to my comment that Yamato wouldn't refer to themselves as a woman, if they are playing a role of a character, in this case Oden. So for me the information is all their that Yamato is a female character. Oda includes Yamato among all other female characters in a spread, and all other external information points to her being female. I can understand how all that would upset the trans community, because I have several trans friends, however personally I feel like its just a cultural difference. Like even in the One Piece Top 100 character pole, Japanese people based on interviews don't understand why Yamato character wise is so popular in other countries. In these interviews when the topic of Transgender comes up they are visibly confused, and they bring up that people who think that should vote Kiku . I feel like for Oda, their intention wasn't to make a trans character, and it was just to make a nod to a specific type of cultural identity of these specific cosplayers that play the character and that is also why you don't get a clear explanation because they don't understand culturally why the west would even consider Yamato Trans cause they see an obvious difference between Kiku and Yamato.

Richie the Lion

Kiki is a man who presents himself as a woman. It's that simple.

JoJo D Luffy

Im sorry but I will not take as One piece having weak female characters. There are Nami and Robin, and Vivi, literally all mothers, Tsuru, So many Big Mom pirates. Big Mom is literally an emperor. Boa is strong and feminine unapolgetically. Oda passes the bechdel test because so many strong female characters who do not just talk about some man, they have their own dreams and stories. Even Mikasa fails that.

Stinky Pete

Keep telling yourself that. Meanwhile, everyone in the story will continue to refer to Yamato as a "he"

Miko

And oda will keep including yamato in the female character only color spreads so then I guess we are at an impasse on the topic
