1) Do what frightens you.
If you go digging you'll find this sentence paraphrased from all corners of the globe. The common iteration is "go big or go home" but you know how I feel about binaries - and besides Willard Wigan blew that idiom straight to hell where it belongs.
I avoided drawing water. I mean yeah I knew how to make those stylistic wave lines but water water? Been avoiding that feat for seven years. And guess what? I kinda really love creating water! (perhaps you noticed). Is it photo realistic? no. Would it be easy to do without a Wacom tablet? hell no.
But if you don't give some things a go? you'll never know!
2) Have fun for fuck's sake.
If you have to drag yourself to the computer, easel , microphone, studio, whatever? You're not having any fun.
The whole "art is suffering" idea has some truth to it. But the people that push that philosophy the hardest would much rather you ignore the fact that their parents have been paying the rent since 2006.
Give me a break!
If we're going to make declarative statements then I'll be the first to take credit for "art is exercise." Because just like exercise you're going to have an uphill struggle with motivation unless you find something you enjoy doing.
None of the subjects my comics are about are particularly fun, but in finding excuses to draw sharks, orcs, monsters, and other fun little details I can turn a page I'm dreading into something I look forward to all day.
Life isn't about having fun all the time. Except? Why not?
3) Ignore this one.
(It's exclusive to Patreon staff) - why does Hotmail have better text editing features than you?
Let me repeat.
Why does HOTMAIL have better text editing features than you?
I get that Patreon is secretly more about serving musicians and video content creators? who don't necessarily need wordy posts like this one? But GEEZ.
GEEZ.
To quote (terrible advice) from a former employer: "Get better at this."
