Well, here we are - the climax. I won't say much more than that. If you've all caught up, I'm sure you'll have a sense of what's coming for poor Kione... although even then, I hope there will be a few things in here to take you by surprise. It's going to be brutal - that, I can promise

Just to furnish you with a quick sketch of what's coming: this is the penultimate chapter, and the final one will be coming in a week or two's time. After that, RESCUE HOUND proper will be finished although I do intend to produce a Leinth-focused side-chapter (although probably not until sometime next month, after I've had time to tend to a couple of other projects)

Enjoy!

Penultimate chapter AAAAA

Valmire

I am filled with incredible glee but also that wonderful emotional pit in my stomach from how things turn on their heads. The blows and attempts, the culmination of what we knew was going to happen. But at the same time I’m fascinated by what I realize is the greatest bleeding weakness of the whole thing. Handler herself is utterly confident to the point of utter danger, she is confidant that she cannot and will not fail by strength of will and her own cunning. Believing she knows “humans” better than they know themselves. The day she’s is ever wrong will almost certainly kill her, or if not her then Sartha and Leinth. A group of people willing to fight as one and sacrifice themselves for each other against their own self interest against Ancyor that are actually skilled and not stymied by the surprise of Ancyor’s presence in the first place… Handler has a weapon that will live a short and powerful life and acts like it will never die or fail. The technology of the rebels will adapt and advance and eventually steal. Starlight overdrive, a combat drug used by a rebel to focus their mind on the moment and their own cause to make them immune to the Handler. Regular dosing during self meditation leading to pilots that have Self trained. It’s actually interest here how in seeing that Kione is fully capable of breaking the system with a single move reveals that the whole facade is inevitably going to fall once someone denies the presentation of the surface. Sure the psychosurgery, drugs, and conditioning can’t be resisted outside of death but that’s just pure chemistry and biology. Once someone is capable of literally cracking open your grey matter all that’s left is short term planning. But that’s honestly Handler’s power, the short term and denying people the ability to think of Tomorrows. Make them focus on the here and now, which is what Mech Pilots are so good at doing. But all it takes is some pilots able to collectively decide to go one step beyond the next fight and Handler’s tactics begin to fail because a sacrifice to win today is planned for but a sacrifice to kill Sartha Tomorrow, or even just Later during pickup once the combat drug hangover kicks in. It’s all there and it’s delightful to see how everything is clear but also impossible to see for those in the setting.

I fucking called Sartha being rescued at all being a trap and I was FUCKING RIGHT!!!! Holy shit what a god damn delight. My girl was on fire and ready to burn the world down. More than happy to see Kione smacked back down to reality and truly understand how utterly she has fucked up this entire time. She was playing right into the worst pair of hands, being manipulated from the start. There was no escape for her the moment she chose the path Handler's monologue punctuated by Ancyor ripping Kione apart was just the icing on the cake for me. It was all a trap of Her design. Someday she might lose, someday there will be a moment where it all crashes down around her, but in the world that she constructs, in the narrative that she has bent to her will, there is no hope for anyone who stands against her. What a perfect villain. I'm going to go drink a lot of water now. Woo!!

HazelPup

Oh my god you were not kidding- that *was brutal*. I can't express how engrossing all of it was to read. I have so many things to say, I don't know if I should even try! What a beautiful, horrific, terrifying end. I know there's more coming but... That's the end, isn't it? It's always been the end, this feels like the story of a woman caught in a trap set by a God; a plan she can't even see the shape of. Or hell maybe she could, the sense of inevitability has been ramping up for a while now, but if I'm being honest wasn't it there from the very beginning? Those first chapters really filled me with this sense of pure dread, she's in over her head, she doesn't know what she's stumbled onto, doesn't understand it one bit. The muzzle is off, and she's *going to get bitten*. This chapter is like that feeling put through a couple dozen emotional amplifiers, in the best possible way. It feels like such a macrocosm of Grasping the Weapon, to me. Kione has gone so far, plunged headlong into something she thinks that she understands, thinks that she is above. And boy does she ever pay the price for it. She was being played from before the word go. Kione failed, long ago; everything that's happened since has just been twisting the knife, driving home her failures until the weight of her guilt crushes her completely. She's given into it now. What a fucking ride. Kallie, fantastic work. I can't say that enough. I'm absolutely astonished, that's no exaggeration. Well fucking done, I cannot wait to see how this goes. I wanna mention briefly that I'm an amateur writer myself- I don't post anything I make or share it with anyone because I've been too shy, but you've been a source of great inspiration to me from the moment I first stumbled across your work, and I wanted to thank you for that. I hope someday I'm able to convince myself to share what I've made because of warhound. I'm getting silly and sappy now sorry- this chapter just made me genuinely emotional lmao. Amazing work, I'm enthralled as always. Thank you for writing this and sharing it with the world and good luck with the ending!

Wanderer_Xerxes

Glad to see my "Sartha is bait" theory panned out. Now to wait and see if my "Kione will be put in charge of mass producing the mutts" theory pans out too...

Chlorr

Holy shit. What a fucking RIDE!! I gasped when Genetor caught Theaboros by the ankle. Simultaneously incredibly narratively rewarding & ummm sexually gratifying to watch Leinth rip off Kione’s wings. I suspected some of the betrayals & beats for a few chapters now, but even the twists I expected surprised & delighted me by virtue of their inescapable thoroughness & your writing making them so entertaining. Your pacing on this whole series is just stellar, especially the last few chapters. I hit the LEINTH ARITIMIS: GENETOR cliffhanger in chapter 9 & slammed the upgrade subscription button to read ch. 10. Like, after watching Kione wreck Pela & then Sartha wreck Kione (Kione is wrecking herself let’s be so for real) I HAD to see Leinth take her shot at wrecking Kione too. What a damn good bad end. I’m so excited to see the fallout.

Haggisllama

this was even more bleak than i imagined, welcome to hell monax, enjoy your stay. The way that Her text is centered rather than left aligned is such an incredible stylistic choice that solidified the faux-religious nature of Her authority. I usually jump around a lot when reading and my head is abuzz but like, towards the end there just, nothing. what a perfect bad end. i know this isnt the end and that we'll see 1 more chapter but oh my goodness gracious me holy fuck youve just done it again, over and over. Handler is such a good character, she is a walking symbol of imperialism and conquest as has always been presented, i mean to be honest id argue handler is less of a character and more of just an absolute fact of the setting, but oh my gosh. Youre such an incredible writer and its so clear just how much thought youve put into the inherent symbolism and themes of the story, i mean of course the moment to moment action is really good and the prose oh my god the prose but the themes really, really stand out in rescue hound in particular. I could gush forever but warhound in general is amazing and youve made something incredible with your writing.

thank you for writing something so painful with such an impact to it that we felt emotionally empty for the rest of the day. this particular wound isn’t healing anytime soon, judging by how deep Her words cut.

Something I really like here is how DESPERATE Handler was in this chapter. Behind all the cold calculations and "I planned this from the very beginning" villainy is a woman who is seriously backed into a political corner. The rebellion seems like an afterthought to her, considering her real enemies come from above. She was forced to give the Empire a demonstration of mass produced hounds, which to me feels like high command saying "We're going to replace you the moment we finish learning your recipe" but also having to rely on a plan as utterly reckless as using her best asset as BAIT in a situation where one unexpected variable could ruin everything. Then having to show up to an active battlefield IN PERSON just to make sure you get that asset back? It screams "I'm doing everything in my power to keep my job" to me. But to someone like Kione who, from the very start, has internally idolised and deified Handler, She's been holding all the aces the whole time. Handler as a character feels like the embodiment of the evils necessary to win a war. She'll be purged and erased once the war is over to preserve the Empire's public image and Her legacy will be reduced to notes in a psychology textbook about warcrimes committed during the insurrection and I think she probably knows that. Once again, beautifully written. The warhound series as a whole has given me hyperfixations upon hyperfixations. Like so many others I upgraded my subscription the moment I read the Leinth cliffhanger. Looking forward to the final chapter and where poor Kione's story can even go next from this. Brilliant stuff, well done.

nidee

Can't help but pity Kione. Couldn't even find dignity in death.. She got outtoxicyuri'd so bad 😭

Sartha!!

I am frothing at the mouth

WOW I ATE this chapter near unblinking. Kallie this was so sick wtf!!!!! The mech descriptions immediately had me mentally drawing adjustments to Ancyor, opening its horrid mouth and imagining Genetor. Aaaah!! It's so cruel, so brutal, so beautiful. Getting the wings ripped out omg?? The way you describe the damages being felt inside the cockpit. So intimate, as erotic as evisceration of a machine can be. It's sickeningly sweet that at its core RESCUEHOUND is a fucked love story. I am a huge sucker for humans standing in a mechs palm... this was insane. How everything collapses in Handlers final revelation. How it tumbles so hard Kione breaks. What a masterpiece by Handler, all without her direct presence, drug or machines. Just by proxy, via Sarthas poisonous radiation. I'm still reeling and rambling. You're doing amazing work, I can't believe you were ever worried about your work. Fuck, thanks for birthing this dark piece of art into all our brains.

I find Kione's downfall much more interesting than that of Sartha or Leinth. Whereas their downfalls were the hero worship and standing in the shadow of said hero, Kione's is her own undoing. She approached this from pure intentions, thinking that the Sartha she loved was still alive, she just needed help to regain that. Then, over time we see Handler's words starting to infest her every thought, because she played to Kione's insecurities. She didn't try to get along with the other rebels, she didn't even bother to acknowledge them as people, because she busy thinking "I just need to do a little more and I'll have the old Sartha back" Instead, as we see, the old Sartha is dead, she's just a facade to be worn by the dog. Kione let the power corrupt her, she at some point went from wanting to save her friend and the one she loved, to wanting to ruin her in the eyes of the rebels, so Sartha would be all hers and no one elses. It wasn't just "Get rid of Her influence from Sartha's head", she wanted Sartha all to herself. And now in the climax, we see clearly how this led to her defeat. Her pride and joy torn apart, her heart broken by Sartha, even her body beaten in combat. Sure, she's been scouted as a potential Handler, but in all honesty, I don't know if she has it in her, once you boil her down. She's just as lost as they were, only she hid it by being a mercenary, never staying very long in one place. Kione's hubris was her downfall. Sartha is dead, she's been dead, there's no saving her. No amount of deprogramming, or starlight or even degradation can or will ever fix that. Kione couldn't let go of what she /knew/ and it cost her. Not that there was ever a chance to defeat Genetor, but still. She went in unprepared and barely managed to dent its armor, because she wanted to play Handler, wanted to make Sartha love her. I'm unsure of what happens next, but I don't think she becomes just another dog, but probably not a handler either. She craved the power, but in effect, she was unable to effectively wield it. Excellent chapter, absolutely love how detailed you were about all the little things like describing Genetor.

FluffiestTail

I said I was gonna fucking do it, here I finally am. I wonder how healthy it is to read five chapters of this sequentially?

Oceanus Thetitan

Yup, this much is obvious. Only made clear by that pack of mutt bs . Those two dont have what it take to lead so kione is the solution also objective one and three imo is a bitg contracdictory to eachother :v

God, absolutely shattering, for both Sartha and Kione-because she finally realized how she helped break the woman she loves. As ever, I feel the worst for Leinth. I hope, one day, she just rips Handler in half and keeps going-that something forces its way up and out and lets her tear free again. All her life, Leinth has been seen by others as second best, trapped in a role, and even this proves it-she's not even allowed to fight or really even be anything besides a growl in a cockpit, doomed to act as Handler's vehicle for Her own arrogance, deception, and hate. If Warhound is a transfemme horror story, Leinth is the early-transition girl in a hostile environment, like me. The "mask", the "boymoder", the "oh, he told us, but that was just a phase." Sartha has moments where her real self, the real woman, pokes through. Leinth is drowning in being a hound. Maybe...but that's too dark for a Patreon comment. Thank you for making this, Kallie, and I sincerely hope there is a real Rescue someday for these girls. They deserve it. We all do.

Congratulations for finishing RESCUE HOUND! It really is quite the accomplishment. Throughout this story, I've grown quite attached to Kione, through all the twists and turns of this downfall. Whereas I grew to adore Leinth in her story, I came to hate Kione in hers (in all the best ways, of course; your writing is as clever as it is compelling). She is cocky, headstrong, her superiority complex underpinning all her interactions with the rebels. I loved that little bit at the end, Kione finally putting to words her fondness, even envy, for the rebels. How they were always stronger than her. It is only in her dissolution that she's able to admit it to herself. As you mentioned on Bluesky, Kallie, there's something almost childish to her actions; her long black coat in chapter 9, similar to Handler’s, was a nice bit of foreshadowing, but also just... sad, in a way. Like a preteen trying on her mother's clothing, imagining herself an adult. So much of this fall was foreshadowed, to me obvious, but now that it's here, I feel... empty. I feel for the rebels, more than Kione. She could have actually undermined Handler at any point, she could have stepped away, but we all dig our own graves, in the end. Sartha was Kione's. As always, Sartha is the nexus of all things, but even she merely orbits a black, dead singularity. There's more I can say, and perhaps one day I'll write a proper post about this series, but all I want to say is that I'm so excited for what's coming next. I believe one of the next stories is called HELL HOUND? I'm sure that'll be nice and peaceful. (yes I know there's an epilogue chapter, I'm excited to read it, but I might as well get this out now before I forget)

Foxing around.

One thing that has been stuck in my mind ever since it started to become obvious how cook Kione was. Was a movie a friend showed me, the original Wicker Man. Kione, like Howie is the beetle, trapped on a string going round and round because that's all she can conceive to do. At any point she could have just left, taken Sartha with her maybe. Or she could have gone all in, joined the rebels and had had them help her. And here is where round and round lead her, the string that binds her is of course handler's, and it's more than enough to hang herself with.

Horobi-san

Ended up reading this today during a 9-hour inter-state trip while listening to "The One Who is Torn Apart", from Xenogears and holy fuck, what a masterpiece. Could kind of relate to Kione's complete fall, as it's easy to just abandon every pretense of personhood once you feel like everything you did just made what you love go down in flames. It was extremely compelling.

starryknight

gut wrenching, soul destroying, mesmerizing agonyyyyy I truly feel for Kione despite how awful she is. She was thrust into a fucked situation from the start and just... fumbled every opportunity to improve it (relatable!) That wistful thought about having had practice remaking herself as a teenager hit hard. I adore how trans these characters are. Really thought there was a chance she could at least strike a small blow to this whole carnival of horrors... Sartha!! The hero arrives!!! There's something beautiful in how she and the rebels just can't stop fighting, even knowing they're beyond help. It's been so thoroughly demonstrated how utterly wrecked Sartha is on the inside but there's embers in her soul that haven't gone out and I love seeing it (even if it was immediately exploited hhhh). I wonder if all this is Handler's effort to snuff out that last bit of her and achieve a perfect personality rewrite. I wonder how long it takes to come up with Handler's dialogue hehe. When she speaks I'm always on the edge of my seat, she's perfectly balanced in deception and truth. gods even the descriptions of combat are so, so satisfying. Please keep writing as long as you find it fulfilling, we adore your work 💙

Latebakr

i had my fun with cahpter 8 and the muzzle stuffing. this is payback clearly. but i know so much more fun awaits <3<3<3

Valerie

That was completely fantastic, I couldn’t stop reading! The way you describe combat flows so well, and it highlights the void left in Kione so beautifully!
