Gotta say, wasn't expecting a New Zealand mention. Always nice when my country pops up in media.

Moonlight Mariposa

I know I'm probably so far off, but I kinda read Jax as being trans masc. His adverse reaction to the dress paired with his comments about his ears and tail being 'peak masculinity' just reminded of how some trans people I know sometimes describe certain aspects of themselves after transitioning. Like I said, I'm probably way off the mark, but that's what it made me think of

My theory is that Ragatha, being a perpetual people pleaser (we now know is because she never received affection from her mother), doesn’t like the thought of Pomni getting closer to Jax because Jax doesn’t attempt to get anyone to like him. I’d even say he does the opposite. In Ragatha’s mind, if Pomni likes Jax, despite him being awful, and Ragatha fails to connect with Pomni, despite being kind, then there’s something fundamentally wrong with her that no pleasantries can fix.

The Akimbo Knight

Ngl that would be an interesting twist for gooseworx to do, and honestly and can see them pulling it off

Jax’s point in the bar is that Caine isn’t supposed to have dominion/control over their minds and personalities, as he himself tells Pomni in episode 1. But if that’s the case, how’d Jax become vegan in a way he apparently couldn’t suck out of like everything else he don’t care about? This episode actually felt really unsettling, insidious even, mainly because of Jax’s moments. Him apparently losing his tail means that appearance changes can be permanent, rather than limited to each adventure, and his personality trait means that they can be changed mentally as well. But if that’s the case, why does Caine need adventures to keep the players sane, and why doesn’t he stop abstractions on a mental or physical level, which feel vaguely tied to suicidal and mentally unstable themes?

David Johnson

"One of the few things I can't control, is your minds." So how did them voting change Jax's personality like that?

David Johnson

I am now wondering if that artist figure NPC has been in the background of the *earlier* episodes as well, and we just didn't notice. Sorta like Blandon was in the background of all the Gravity Falls episodes before "The Time Traveler's Pig."

I read it the other way - Jax is transfemme, but is still an egg. The performative hyper masculine cruelty is a mask to cover up insecurities and pass as "one of the guys" - the maid dress was actually comforting but god forbid other people know that. Also the corn may be symbolic. Or Jax just may be an asshole. Your average internet edgelord reply guy.

Dark Siri

Wait a minute... Jax might have been a cat, you say? What other cat-like qualities might he have? Generally behaves like a jerk. Wants to hunt and eat meat. Assumes he has a a tail to go with his big ears. Stares at things other folks can's see. The fact that Cain can't control human minds, but somehow made Jax a vegan. I must meditate on this some more.

Kitsune Kokoro

You could make the case that Caine didn't control Jax's mind, the other players did. If we're playing by Fae technical-truth rules, "I didn't change your mind myself, I just enforced a change the rest of the players decided on" could potentially hold water.

Can you react to "k-pop demon hunters" it's a new movie on Netflix that just came out today. I just saw it and it's really good, the animation is amazing and so are all the songs!

I’m glad Jax called out Ragatha. Like Gangle said in the last episode, it’s hard to tell when Ragatha’s being genuine because she hides all her negative emotions. I completely agree with what Jax said. I would never be able to be friends with someone like Ragatha in real life. If you can clearly tell someone has a facade up like Ragatha, then it’s hard to trust them. After all, so many people pretend to be nice and kind when all they’re trying to do is manipulate you. Obviously I don’t think that’s the case for Ragatha, it’s probably just a trauma response for her. However, it’s easy to see why Jax might not trust her. I mean I’d never be able to trust someone with my genuine feelings if they can’t be genuine with me too. It probably would get on my nerves too if I got trapped in a video game and this other person was always pretending everything is fine when it’s clearly not. That being said Jax has the same issue himself. He too seemingly puts on a facade as a coping mechanism, except instead of pretending to be happy, nice, and kind, he just pretends he doesn’t care about anything or anyone. Thus both of them completely isolate themselves and make forming true friendships impossible.

Phoenix_mercury

Yeah the difference is I much prefer Jax andhave been friends with people like him, one I'm not longer purely because I had to move and we didn't have phones at the time, and getting through to them tends to be a whole lot easier than those like ragatha imo(how can one tell they've actually made progress Vs them acting like progress to "not hurt your feelings") like sure I get why some people don't like him(which hurts) but he's been my fav from the beginning 🤷 like no joke I wanna bundle the snarky dumbass in a blanket, bundle him into bed with cuddles and reassurance and tell him it's ok and that he doesn't have to act how he does, surely it's stressful and exhausting to mask such a way

May

Good point! Perhaps that’s why Jax has always been my favorite character whereas Ragatha is my least favorite.

FullmetalNinja25

Every time I see the word "Lore" especially in all caps I hear it in MatPat's voice lol

LikeCat

Same. 🤣

EDub

I like the theory about Jax. It kinda explains the shock about the tail

og.monstr

This is disconcerting. Ragatha's one of my faves, and it looks like she's NOT going to have a good time moving forward...

Joey Quixote

You do actually see one lurking in the Pilot episode. I believe Elijah spotted it in her reaction.

Joey Quixote

Ragatha chose a softball adventure. Softball. Ya don't say. Ragatha's need to please makes so much more sense now. I am worried about her going forward. Someone had pointed out just after her apology to Jax, there is the briefest flicker in her hair. Could be an animation error, or she's begun to abstract. I loved all the little insights we got here. -Jax lost a friend. -Gangle is an art school dropout. -Pomni was an accountant who enjoyed urban exploration. -Ragatha is well-off, but has mommy issues. -Zooble was a bartender and tattoo artist and I love that for them.

Matthew Dunne

It's interesting to me that Pomni wonders if the others are familiar with Kinger's wife. It's the first time of really acknowledging that the turnover might mean that there could be events that happened to some of them that are completely unknown to others. Hell, Kinger himself probably doesn't remember if anybody else was around at that time.

Andy

I definitely get the vibe from Ragatha of "I try so hard to be nice and likeable but I have no friends, and yet jerks and bullies do everything they can to make people feel bad and make friends anyway. So... what is so deeply wrong with me?"

Phoenix_mercury

yeah i always pay attention to whatever "negative" things rags says but have caught myself tuning out her overly nicey nice stuff vs jax im constantly paying attention, also i literally use rags solely as its faster to type rather than a nickname yet jax gets jaxy, buns, bunbun, bunny boi, it hurts seeing so many f u's to him from people jumping to conclusions tbh tho on the flip side its slightly a pride moment when they see stuff slip between the cracks, u on the discord? also that point about making progress with someone? 1st hand experience, im not friends with the rags "type" person anymore bcz of the stress yt the jax "type"? we've now been friends longer than not, 16 years out of 23

RedPrototype101

Did you notice the GatorGoo kegs in the dug out?

DolphinBlueLotus

Wasn't there a balloon character on the door in episode one? Crossed out? And now one with a neon ligjt?

Alex

So, did any one else notice Ragathas hair glitch a little when she apologized to Jax at the softball game?

SauceyRed

I didn't even notice the animation and design in general looked different lmao

SauceyRed

I hope Jax ISN'T an AI, idk why but I'd prefer if he were human, just a really crazy dude.

Bailey

Best episode so far imo. It's nice seeing a deeper side to both Jax and Ragatha. I always figured Jax's cruelty was a trauma response. Obviously not a justification, but I like complex asshole characters, so. It's also nice seeing some of Ragatha's more negative traits. She's still my favourite, but having her just be nice all the time would be stale, and her past influencing her ultra niceness is great. Also yes! when I watched this episode on my own when it came out I almost immediately noticed the animation update as well.

Dooba Dooba

you don't think its a justificiation? to me its unfavorable and people do get hurt by it, but if he doesnt do it he'll never find the foundation to get better (if you dont express in your way, you'll never find the right way to cope).

Bailey

of course it's not a justification. There's more than 1 way to cope from trauma and abusing others is absolutely not one of them. I'm not a Jax hater, in fact I quite like his character BECAUSE he has these layers to him, but acting like he's at all justified in constantly abusing the others is kinda wild. There's a reason "it's an explanation but not an excuse" is a common saying for characters like him.

44:31 "like a kitty" thats actually one theory: Jaxx is a cat which someone put the VR headset and make it go into the circus: He is scared of corn and holes, some cats have that the circus allow the "people" on it to do whatever they want, so the cat eventually learned to talk and liked the small creatures (the frog and pomni are smaller than the rest) He mess up with gangle because she is literally a ribbon to play with and mess with raggatha since is a literal ragdoll to play he mess up people for fun, just like cats do He "lose his tail" just like cats lose control of their tails, which scientifically speaking, is proved that their tails move on their own sometimes, thats why they chase their tail, becase it moves without them doing so when the water flow up, he inmediatly move away very fast he super-disliked the dess up, it is known that cats hate being dress up, unlike most dogs, and inmediatly try to remove the dress up he hunted animals in the safari and when biting gangle as a rabid animal, he said "just like mom used to make", like... a cat feeding its kittens? he likes this world more than real world because here he can do whatever he wants, but if he comes back, he would be "just a cat"

RenWillsen

You can see in episode 8, on Kinger's computer screen that Ragatha arrived at the circus in 2008, since Breaking Bad came out in 2008, that's why she doesn't understand Jax's reference, she was already in the circus and never got the chance to watch it
