I really think 13 and 14 should be watched in close proximity. Maybe not back to back, but I definitely wouldn’t wait the full week. Damn your Neo loyalty is strong. Neo “kills” Yang, and then you blame Cinder, as if Neo being a near 30 year old having beef with a 17 year old isn’t the direct cause of Yang’s current result. I get liking villains, but at least gotta call them accountable. She’s more than just “a pain in the ass”. She gleefully skips around a room full of dead people Cinder just killed, goes for the kill shot against Ruby, sends Yang falling. Like cmon.

So, before V8 started airing, Arryn Zech (Blake’s VA) made a comment about her throat being sore because she’d done a lot of screaming during one of her recording sessions. So, naturally (also helped by the fact that Arryn is like captain of the Bee ship), people were convinced something was going to happen to Yang, and we all were patiently waiting for The Scream™, and we finally got it in this episode. But at what cost? Along the same lines, from the minute Ambrosius said “do not fall” most everyone was convinced Yang was going to be the one to fall. Also, I can’t believe we got a “the five times Yang caught Gambol Shroud and the one time she didn’t” fic set up in the actual show like how dare! Yang always catches Gambol Shroud. Has since V1. But not this time and that was so rude of the writers! And the way that you can hear a heartbeat as Blake throws Gambol toward Yang only for it to stop when she misses. Like Blake’s heart stopped in that moment. And and and and then we can see Blake was straight up going jump in after her if Weiss hadn’t been holding her back! Then we get Feral Blake? This episode just gave us all the Bee Angst™! This entire sequence was so freakin insane man. Watching this for the first time as a hardcore Bee shipper hurt so bad…but also so good. I like that Robyn had no clue Vine was about to make an emotional breakthrough with Harriet so she just rams the ship. It’s like, I get it, but girl we were so close to a breakthrough! Lol “I’ve never wavered in fighting the enemies of this Kingdom, and I won’t start now.” Winter going in with the badass lines! Let’s go, Queen! Love her so much. You’re doing amazing, sweetie! It’s like, of course, there’s a sandstorm! If not, things would have gone far too smoothly, and we can’t have that! The fact that Jinn looked so sad to “betray” our heroes just always gets me. Like, it’s her job but she genuinely didn’t want to help Cinder here. Sigh.

I don't think she isn't holding Neo accountable. She is talking about potential redemption here. And I agree with her from the POV of this episode if you have read Neo's novel. Between Neo, Cinder and Ironwood, Neo is more redeemable than them. If this holds for the future...we'll see (aka I already know but don't want to spoil her)

Neo is a very complicated character who is extremely hard to judge. Using human standards in her almost feels wrong because her morality is so alien it seems. Theres a trope called "blue and orange morality" where theres a completely different set of morals a character or group has that dealing with them is difficult. Neo feels like that.

I love that you can see the logical arguments Robyn makes have an impact on Vine. He gives up and lets himself be tied up. And he follows Harriet to reason with her. The problem is that logical arguments don't work the same way on Harriet. She is running away from her grief and holding onto the one thing that keeps her close to Clover: Her duty. And Vine saw that. As soon as he saw how much she is grieving Clover's dead, he was about to change tactics. Sadly, Robyn stopped that talk. And I don't blame Robyn. Harriet has the bomb and seems willing to use it.

Unfortunately Neo hasn’t shown an ounce of regret. Just single minded desire to kill a teenager. I get she’s fun and a good wild card for the plot, but I think we gotta call a spade a spade when they kill civilians and (presumably from her eyes) Ruby’s sister.

Also, a hope I have for Volume 9 reactions: Continue to cut out the openings for most episodes. Don't get me wrong, I love the Volume 9 opening. But watching Volume 9 unfold without the hints it gives you would be great.

I think my heart stopped along with Blake's in that moment... Yang has always been my favorite of the main 4 and I just felt so numb and cold for a second when that happened.

I think the worst thing about Ironwood killing Jacques isn't that Jacques doesn't deserve it, but that by doing so he took agency away from Winter, Weiss, Whitley, Willow and even Klein. Clearly some kind of conversation was had about what to do with him, and Weiss decided she wanted him alive, and Winter despite personally wanting him to rot still accepted what Weiss wanted. Maybe they hoped they could hold him accountable. That was taken away from them.

I feel like Elijah may go back later and watch this Vol with Mosco(when she is caught up) and realize just how hard that scream Blake does hits. I remember watching that for the first time when it aired(I avoided online spoilers) and freaking out. Not knowing what happened, then waiting. It was brutal, also brushing past what Neo just did as it wasn’t Cinder who knocked Yang off is kind of making me laughing and shake my head, like really now? 😂

Elijah I can say that at least one of the things you asked for in the next episode will happen. The version of RWBY I watched had all the episodes edited together into one multi-hour movie so the episode breaks come as a surprise to me. So much I want to say but it has to wait for the next episode..

This is such a sadistic detail as well that im just going to sprinkle in here but on yangs character short going into volume 5 when she was training ruby to fight hand in hand. She jumped in the jaws of an ursa to save ruby from taking the hit and when she killed it and ruby went to check up on her she said "Ive always got your back sis" And indeed she has :'] She did thr excact same thing with the only diffirence of activating her semblence before she took the hit which with her is a one good hit vonurability technically and it knocks her aura out so she couldnt recover from it. She did everything to get to her sister as fast as she could to shield her and she kept her promise even to her own expense Also the heartbreaking detail indeed that blake tried catching her and that sequence happened in seconds for them. She reacted before anyone could realise what happened snd she wasnt fast enough amd in that moment of seeing her turn to dust essentially i believe with her mind being blank if weiss hadnt gone to grab her she would hsve jumped after her but she gave her a few minutes to come to her senses. And the first thing she does while she sobs is hold onto her forehead where they always touched for comfort So yeah. Great Were all crying again in the warm up round

Other thoughts — - The storyboarding and animation team really popped off with this one. The cold cut in the Atlas operations room from Cinder opening the door to them all dead & silent was crazy. Sound team deserves kudos too. I also really love how they used the anime frames after Yang falls to show speed — every character is frozen in their frame while Blake glides through all their frames to show how fast she moved to Yang. You can also hear her heart beating. - Winter’s “I’ve never wavered in fighting the enemies of this kingdom” line is so good. And another kudos to the animation team — I always thought the way she gets up from the blast, all slow and difficult, looked so natural. - Robyn realizing “what if I just ram my minivan into their minivan” as the best course of action always makes me laugh. - Jacques deserved to die, but not at IW’s hand. - Blake went from “I hope that’s not a choice I’ll have to make again” in V7 (about having to kill Adam) to Murder Cat after Neo slices Yang is soooo delicious.

I do like how Jinn's sadness in revealing Ruby's plan underlines the Relic Spirits' design. They are essentially naked except for all the chains. The Brothers gave them personhood, with likes and dislikes and personalities, but shackled them to their purpose. Jinn likes Ruby and wants her to succeed, but she is unable to refuse. And while it may be partly an editing thing I do like how Jinn doesn't narrate Cinder's answer like she did The Girl in the Tower, like she's silently fufilling her obligation to the minimum rather than revelling in the storytelling like she did back in V6E3.

"Neo you're kind of a pain in the ass right now!" She's always been. Right since day 1. But people fawn over because of her design -.- One of the big reasons I hate her is this volume. I love how you said "yeah, kill Cinder" when Neo is the one who caused Yang to fall. Blake going after Cinder instead would've made no sense. She's able to take both Ruby and Blake on purely because of her Semblance to create physical illusions, and being acrobatic. She's always been dodgy. "Yes I'm purposefully not mentioning Neo because I still have some hope-" Ugh. I can't realistically see how anyone of RWBY would want/be ok with Neo switching sides. After all she's done since V2, and this episode? Nuh-uh. I'm sorry for the spout of negativity, but the way you feel about Cinder/Ironwood etc. is the way I feel about Neo. If any Mods see this and find it too negative, feel free to remove it then. It's a smart move to wait with the finale. As much as you shouldn't wait, you probably need a breather, poor thing. Ambrosius definitely takes everything literally, unfortunately, and Weiss messed up. Next Friday can't come fast enough!

that's the whole point of that scene, imo. ironwood becoming jury judge and executioner for someone who doesn't deserve to die at his hands, further cementing his descent into becoming the tin man.

Remember what Watt's said to Cinder? It's not enough to be deserving, you have to be worthy? That's why this chapter is named Worthy. This is Cinder being worthy as a villain. Basically, she humbled herself enough to work with Watts and Neo. She's still Cinder, though. She couldn't help but brag about working with others. That's why Yang thought to look around when she did. Yang hit her head when she landed from the first tumble, so she's half-knocked-out. So, she can't do anything to save herself. Otherwise, she could have reached back for Gambol Shroud, or used her weapons to propel her onto one of the bridges or something. Blake's scream is devastating, though. And almost going off after Yang, heartbreaking. If it wasn't for her semblance, Neo would have been decapitated. This is a dark volume. It's because it's kind of the villain's volume. Cinder, especially. She has grown as a person this volume. Unfortunately, it didn't make her better. Just a better villain. She's more competent now. She knows when to include others. That's going to just make her more dangerous.

That moment when Blake turns and gives Neo that death glare may be the first time in the series that the animators got her ears right. I know that've been trying to show Blake's emotions through her ears since volume 4, but previously her ears have either dropped forward or to the sides, while a cat's ears fold down so the tips pointing toward the *back*. This is the first instance I've ever noticed Blake's ears doing that — and it's hella fierce. :-D

Girl, make three cups of tea, have something soft to squeeze, and something to throw that you don't mind breaking. You're gonna need it for the finale. I'm actually really interested to see her reaction to V9. After waiting two years for it to come out, with the exception of a certain scene, I found it kind of meh. Maybe it's because I couldn't quite grasp the concept. So I'm looking forward to seeing her interpretation. Maybe I'll enjoy it more watching it through Elijah's eyes.

Dreanner95 obviously I can't go into spoiler territory either, but I think she's irredeemable. Like SportySpice said, she hasn't shown any regret or done anything to earn a redemption. Like, there is zero reasons as to why anyone, elast of all Ruby, Yang, and Blake, would want to trust her or tolerate her, much less be friends with her. Just because she has the backstory that she has in the book doesn't mean the characters should just forgive and forget for what she has done across the series. At least Emerald showed remorse and disgust in V3 with the Grimm invasion.

Honestly kind of took the punch out of the reaction for me. No acknowledgment that Yang just sacrificed herself for Ruby? No acknowledgment that Blake is out for vengeance against Yang’s “killer” (more impressed Neo is surviving a 2 v 1). Kinda weird but oh well. Neo simping has always been mystifying to me though, so *shrug*.

Yang has the strongest aura out of the 4 main characters, yet her aura broke after just one attack from Neo. Even though we've seen Yang take multiple hits before that were much more powerful than Neo's attack without her aura breaking. It feels like the writers keep making Yang's power seem weaker just for plot reasons. Neo is the one character I hate more than any other in this whole series. But yeah, pretty much everyone else who watched this episode had the same reaction when Yang fell. Also Blake looked like she was actually about to jump off and go after Yang, and Weiss had to hold her back! Lastly, I agree that Jauque Schnee is a POS, but I think killing him off like that was too easy. He deserved to pay for all the people he's hurt, he needed to pay the consequences for his actions. He got off way too easy, same thing with Emerald. She helped cause so much pain and suffering, but just because she chose not to be evil anymore. Everyone acts like all is forgiven.

I'd argue it's also the puctuation of how his dynamic with Jauques was used to obscure the nature of what he was doing during Vol4- most of Vol6. Ironwood is constnatly making "military dictator" moves during this time, his closing of the borders and bypassing of the council around Amity, his increasing militarisation and the very fact that he holds 2 votes on a council with 4-5 members etc. He's doing awful things but the show frames it around him disrupting the schemes of Jaques, a more clear villan, to distract from how far gone he already was. It's one of the reasons why Vol7 works so well on repeat viewings. Him striaght up murdering Jaques is one last moment of that, doing something objectively terrible to someone its hard to have any sympathy for.

Yeah. Neo's always felt out of place to me, probably because Monty added her on a whim. She has a cool design, but her OP fighting skill and lack of allusion has always been frustrating to me.

Yang’s aura likely broke because she’s been fighting non-stop for the last 48 hours. V7 is only two days ago (fighting all the Grimm and Ace Ops) and then the Mantle evacuation, the Monstra / Whale, etc. with no sleep. All their auras have either been recently broken or are probably running low.

Plus when Yang uses her Semblence her aura is a „one hit and its gone" ... That hit being her „finishing blow" (like against Adam in V6) or being hit while useing it (here)

WELCOME TO THE PAAAAAAIN!! no seriously, as you've probably figured out by now, volume 8 is the Mission Impossible: faced with an impossible task and trying to preserve any shred of hope they can. love how after all this time, Jaune remains the favorite punching bag for CRWBY. he may have grown and matured a lot, but he's still the Vomit Boy at heart. yep, wording with genies does matter! and as infuriating as it is, gotta give props to Cinder for knowing exactly what to say in order to go for the relics (which is still her main goal). and thus, Yang is the first to fall... welcome to RWB. can't say anything for now except this: the show is called "RWBY" for a reason. as for Yang getting hit like that, remember that at this point, EVERYBODY is running on empty. they've been going almost non-stop for two days straight with no time to rest or sleep and probably had to forego meals. and ofc they're all running around trying to save people and not die, so these girls are not at the top of their game. plus it's very likely their Aura levels are low or mid at best, because again they are EXHAUSTED. something crucial to keep in mind for the finale. I still love how Jacquass got nuked like that, really just so fitting. but yes, Ironwood is truly terrifying at this point and I think it's the sort of thing that with hindsight, the monster was always lurking... oh yeah, still adorable to see you simping for Neo like that. which is valid! she is so TINY and unfairly gorgeous. oh Winter... I am so so eager to see what you think of her after the finale. because it really did a lot to make me love her. it's a damn good thing you didn't watch the finale as well, because you're going to need a box of tissues. lots of feels coming... but I urge you to watch all the way to the end.

Feels kind of like I'm cheating since it spans sooooo much, but I've always loved the more narrative/emotional fights. - I don't think Cinder has ever genuinely apologized in her life (not counting the child abuse that inevitably forced her to out of obedience). Neo I'm so sorry baby girl you should've never trusted this bitch. - Hence why she said "Your little friend Oscar was right, but the easy part ends here." She's referencing Oscar saying that the first portion of the plan is the "easy part." - Lmao yeah Neo is fucking tiny. I think it makes her character design stand out even more. - RWBY is always great at making sharp cuts to really emphasize the horror. They can't show a ton of blood and gore, but they don't really need it tbh. Besides, things are scarier when you can't see them. Your mind fills in the blanks with something much worse. - You can thank Arthur for disengaging that prison wall. Bastard loves seeing Ironwood cause even more damage. - Rest in pieces, Jacques. I won't miss you. Definitely shows how heartless Ironwood has become though. - The fact that everyone is fucking FROZEN but Blake is already in motion trying to save Yang. And the way Blake fucking SCREAMS. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. - I promise that this is a story about hope. I PROMISE THIS IS A STORY ABOUT HOPE. - I know Blake is having the worst time of her life right now but not gonna lie her feral growl is pretty hot. Thank you, Arryn Zech. - Neo is a perfect counter to Ruby's fighting style. She's too fast and keeps so much distance that Ruby's heavy scythe can't keep pace. - Harriet I want to strangle you so badly. She's genuinely my least my favorite character in the entire series. - Loving your faith in Neo. Not everyone gives her that much charity. - Fair Game is canon To Me. Though I think Clover's death was necessary for the narrative. He was a loyal yes-man, which Ironwood surrounded himself with, and Clover's death was the emblematic consequence of that choice. - "I've never wavered in fighting the enemies of this kingdom- and I won't start now." is such a hot line. I always took Hairiet's attachment to Clover as a more paternal one. I don't think the show ever actually gives us her age but she seemed on the young side but I could be totally off on that, I just never noticed the show indicating any romantic back and forth or even looks from her. As for Ironwood, nothing excuses the mentality but the situation he's caught in is kinda tragic, his semblance won't allow for any kind of deviation, and the way he's drawn, specifically how he holds his face changes whenever his semblance is activated and it's been stuck like that basically since he learned Salem can't be killed. He activated the semblance rather than give into despair, but the choices are still driven by fear and his semblance is basically unbreakable stubbornness. I'm not sure that the semblance would even let him deactivate it in this situation, which is I think why they drew the tear. It's not to make us feel bad for him, but to show that he hasn't gotten emotionless but rather is willing to do atrocious things to people he does care about, which is honestly worse. While I think Ruby and the gangs decision to tell everyone about Salem was correct, it feels like a pretty big mistake on Ozpin's part to bring Ironwood into the inner circle when things were secret knowing he had a semblance like that

I loved that intro, they did. Those sweaters are perfect for a black cat and a golden retriever couple. They pointed out how an off-handed comment influenced the design of the gates, but I have wondered if they were not specific enough about where the gates led to in Vacuo, so that's why it landed them in an uninhabited part of the region instead of in the city. Ambroscious needed hyper specificity for his design. I can't wait for the next reaction bc I have a feeling Elijah gonna need emotional support from Mosco for that one.

I gotta admit I'm disappointed at the decision to break chapters 13 and 14 up. I've had the pleasure of getting a bunch of my friends and family into RWBY since vol 9 finished so I've been through this rewatch process a number of times and I've found isolating the vol finale's especially this one always hurts the experience of watching them. I just don't think it's possible to be fully on the rollercoaster of emotions and decisions being made if you don't watch them together. That being said still a great reaction. Probably Cinder's best episode to this point in the show for my money. I love that you can see Blake running in the background of the other character's frozen panels while Yang falls and Blake's little grabby hands after are so cute and sad at the same time. The parallels to volume 3 are so good. I love the build in tension in this volume, I think it's better done here than in volume 7. I can't wait to see the reaction to everything that goes down next time.

A touch to this episode that I love is that when Yang falls, it goes into slow-mo for everyone - apart from Blake. She was running so fast that her speed was normal speed compared to everyone elses slow-mo. I just love that she was on it so quickly, knew she had to GO and to try to catch her. I also love the detail that Blake is sobbing, basically about to throw herself off the edge after Yang, not even knowing if Yang is alive or not, being pulled back up by Weiss. Team RWBY would literally die for each other and they continue to show us how strong their relationships are.

When this originally aired, we had to wait a week for the next episode. That alone was torture 😅 and Elijah will experience what we went through. . And if that wasn’t torture enough, the long 2 years and 3 months between volume 8 and 9 had us climbing walls. That’s how long the hiatus was. But she’ll get to experience that with V10 now 😂

Even if you know/wholeheartedly believe Yang’s going to survive (she is a titular character and we have at least one volume left), all the elements just put you right there in the moment and make it heartbreaking.

Especially when you see Blake's reaction. Ruby is more in shock and doesn't have time to really process what happened before Neo keeps attacking, but Blake's immediate despair then shifting into anger is just so visceral and real.

Harriot is certainly on the younger side and despite being a hothead she blindly follow the people she looks up to. She is the only one up to this point that doesn't seem to question or have misgivings about what Ironwood is doing, but everyone else either looks uneasy or glances at each other with a "are we the baddies?" look. Ironwood's semblance of ignoring emotion is basically, "So your super power is being able to turn yourself into a heartless psychopath?" Like, for a bit he was trying to do the desperation play but without any real care of the people he was trying to save, not even the people of Atlas. Even if the thinks he is doing the "right thing" he embodies the worst of "sacrifices must be made" yet he was ready to sacrifice a majority of the population to save a select few people who just happen to be rich.. By refusing to allow emotion to influence his decisions his actions quickly become less about saving people and more about people not doing what he says. Everything becomes a personal slight and it's becomes more apparent that his ability is not that he doesn't feel emotion and more that he doesn't feel empathy.

1. Totally understandable, she should obviously do whatever works best for her. My disappointment is just my personal opinion. I don't think it should be taken particularly seriously by anyone else. It certainly didn't stop me from loving this reaction and being excited for the next one. 2. Again this is just my personal experience of watching the show myself and showing it to other folks. I originally watched the show week to week, since then I’ve mostly rewatched with new folks to the show in larger chunks. Reflecting on both experiences I think this volume especially is a better watch in groups versus individually and if I could go back in time to see it for the first time again that is how I wish I could watch it. To me the rollercoaster I mentioned works much better in that fashion. But obviously not everyone agrees on that which is cool too.
