Right after yesterday's RWBY episode haha Anyway I've been WAITING for this, absolutely peak episode

SauceyRed

Oh so you HAD subtitles, just not enabled. You should definitely go back to check out the other times Caleb spoke Zemnian, and enable them when you hear it in the future.

LikeCat

1. Welcome to the Ermendrud Family BBQ. 2. Nott's „he's MY boy" speech is basically word for word from the Campaign. 3. I have listened to Liam tell Caleb's backstory minimum 20 times in the last year since I started watching C2 and it is SO real (I mean what was I expecting from our resident SadBoi)... And they left out a few things (hopefully later on it gets to be revealed) that are just a whole other level of fucked up 4. It is never NOT heartbreaking what Ickythong (heh) did to them, the whole grooming thing took about 2/3 YEARS. 5. The thruple scene was so „good", fucked up but good (mainly because Eadwulf usually gets „left out" - its most of the time just „Oh yeah Astrid and Bren were a couple")

LikeCat

While Caleb's is one of the most brutal backstories, two that come close are Molly's and Nott's... There are scenes for both of them that are gonna be a LOT to see animated. Third (in my opinion) is Yasha

Toamsz Kozak

Why is Beau always getting the blame for the Volstrucker escape. We know that Caleb is good because he is the main character but Beau obviously doesn't know that. First she has no reason to trust Caleb , she only knows him for maybe 3 days and do far he was nothing a pani in the ass for her. Than he is the one who is kemping secrets from her during interegation and doesn't translate what Owelia is saying in zemnian (obviously such behavior would be sketchy as fuck) and finały it was Caleb who let Owelia escape, he was the one who tosed Beau aside and kicked the chair which allowed Owelia to break free

Charles Frechette

“I am going to tell you the story of how I killed my family.”

LikeCat

„Of how I murdered my Mother and Father" - Ive been listening to that so much 😅... Gods its painful. 😭

L Frances

Yeah, I've loved seeing people go into this thinking Caleb just had tragedy happen to him, only to realize how active a participant he was. He wasn't just a volstrucker; he was very much *the model* volstrucker. He was even more savage than Astrid & Eadwulf, but that means he was also the most fragile. He really did hardcore earn Beau's distrust. This also explains how Essek was so swayed by Ikithon. Ikithon is a master manipulator, and he knows how to radicalize brilliant, but impressionable young talents, very much like Essek. I knew you'd clock the maternal energy about Nott. The "He's my boy" moment is almost verbatim from the campaign, and it's even more wrenching here. I think you could also clock the Molly moment as something of a moment of kindred spirits; one man who doesn't seem to know much about his mysterious past, and another who can't outrun his own tortured past. They're a very sweet bond.

Dragon0921

Indoctrination is a bitch, dude. He drank the Empire cool aid and became loyal to a fault. Trent took it one step further in the campaign/comic by actually altering their memories into believing they overheard their parents talking about being part of the rebellion, making them being traitors more believable. Also the note with his old name Bren was a callback to Caleb's initiation. The special paper that gets sent back to the academy when it's burnt. She basically informed Trent and the Volstruckers that she found Bren/Caleb.

Dalton Skaggs

Caleb never had a chance when his parents were mentioned by Trent; If he hadn't killed them Trent likely would have had them tortured, maimed and experimented on them not only for his own pleasure and curiosity but also trying to break bren down even further. It is messed up he killed his own family, but it's better he did it to save them from a worse fate.

Ryan

This is actually an even harsher backstory than the game, where Trent altered Caleb's memories so he thought he'd seen his parents actively conspiring to overthrow the government. The show doesn't even give him that out, and he's stuck with having been so mindlessly trusting that he'd happily agree to kill them.

Special K

OH NO...... you're watching this after the last RWBY episode?!? I'm so sorry..... this must have been a rough day for you!

Marceline_mother

Beau is not at fault here. She was said to trust no one, and Caleb has been ominous af. He killed soul monks, he knows a Volstrucker, and he was a Volstrucker. He wasn't telling Beau anything. She doesn't trust him, and he doesn't help his case. Caleb was the one who destroyed the chair also. She was secured.

Andy

People criticize Beau so much for being distrustful of Caleb in this episode, but imo her attitude is INCREDIBLY REASONABLE in their situation

Christopher Malone

so I am saying this right now... WATCH TMN 1X06 BEFORE THE RWBY Vol 8 Finale. Ep 6 is a much lighter and more traditional D&D style episode with some character growth and sets up some big plot points for other characters and is not another Liam O'Brian special, otherwise known as TRAUMA. Take some time off to recover mentally. I do not want to see you again until after Christmas AT MINIMUM. Have a Happy Holiday and all the Best to you, Mosco, the Doggos and your mom. All the best from some schmuck from Jersey

ELS_Art

I have been waiting for this reaction since the episode dropped. 🤣

ELS_Art

Mosco is so evil saying this is a “good” episode. It is really good but watching RWBY followed by this is insane. 🤭 You two are so damn cute and it adds a LOT to the reactions when you two are together.

Charles Frechette

She is so not ready for the rest of this series.

Tiny owl

I don't think it's that people dislike that she's untrustworthy. It's the impatience if you are cluuding that he was an X number. You should at least recognise that he would know more information than you do about the group so she could have had this fight after and she chose to pick him rather than wait. That's the problem. And her arguing with him caused her to escape

Ryan

If you’re wondering what’s up with all those ominous shots of the chair, DM Matthew Mercer made the mistake of drawing attention to a random chair in this scene, which convinced all the players there was some important secret to it so they kept trying to figure it out, ignoring all his attempts to tell them it was nothing.

Andy

Except the issue is that she DOES recognize he has information, and he REFUSES TO JUST ADMIT IT. All Beau wants is for Caleb to translate what Owelia is saying and stop hiding things from her, and the longer he refuses to do this the more distrustful she becomes. Even in the end, Caleb literally picks Beau up with magic and throws her across the room, and all she does is push him back and then tell him to stop lying and explain what's going on She talks in an aggressive way but does literally nothing wrong this entire scene

bloodyshadow1

"way to go beau" yeah she shouldn't have kicked over the chair to free owelia, oh wait that was caleb, she shouldn't have refused to communicate and translate with his partner in the interrogation, oh wait that was caleb too well she definitely shouldn't have attacked him first, oh wait caleb is the one who started it first by throwing her into the wall seriously, the mental gymnastics people will do to not hold a sad white man accountable for his actions is crazy

Lara M.

^This. Beau can be distrustful, she’s within that right but she needs to learn when to pick a fight. Caleb was right about Owelia using Beau’s paranoia in her favor. You cannot argue in front of the person you’re questioning, that gives them an upper hand.

Andy

Except there wouldn't have been an argument in the first place if Caleb just explained even the most BASIC facts of what Owelia was saying. "We used to be allies once, now we are enemies. She is begging me to save her" Problem solved

Solus

I'm not gonna lie, maybe because I already know the outcome from watching the group (Critical Role) play of the campaign maybe everything just doesn't hit as hard, but it seemed more impactful there than here, again just my opinion on the matter. I feel like I wanna go and rewatch the campaign now.

CrowOfAFeather

She's getting the blame because she literally plays into Owelia's hands DESPITE Caleb's warnings. Yes, she doesn't know Caleb and was told to trust no-one, but her priorities were still all wrong. Caleb tossed Beau aside AFTER she REPEATEDLY wouldn't let go and instead focused on Caleb. It happened because of HER. If she hadn't, Caleb wouldn't have kicked Owelia's chair. Sure, we can put some of the blame on Caleb, but Beau still takes the brunt of it for doing exactly what Owelia wanted despite being warned not to. There's a time and place for everything and now wasn't the time to go after Caleb when she KNEW that 1. he was also being hunted by Owelia and 2 they fought each other to death moments ago, clearly they aren't buddies.

og.monstr

This ep is great and all, really loving it - but admittedly, at times, the Critical Role series go a little bit too far when it comes to gore for my liking. I can see why some reactors - (like Mosco) - have hard time watching it. 😨

Asitan

Liam, bringing the pain, O'brien at his finest.

CrowOfAFeather

Beau shouldn't have played into Owelia's hands like Caleb warned her about. Beau shouldn't have started blaming Caleb of being buddies with the woman who clearly hunted him and wanted him for dead, thus forcing him to get Beau out of the way to begin with. Beau shouldn't have decided now was the time and place to question the man who clearly wasn't friends with the assassin. I don't care if Caleb is white or whatever, this isn't about race, Beau did exactly what Owelia did and Caleb's actions is a result of HER actions. Yes, Caleb shouldn't obviously have kicked the chair over, but still.

CrowOfAFeather

Beau saw Owelia attacking him with lethal intent moments ago, you'd think someone who's supposedly so smart would've at least come to the conclusion that they clearly aren't allies.

Being a Critter and a super-fan of RWBY, I can sympathize with your emotional predicament. Imagine, however, that you had just finished RWBY volume 3 and then watched this emotionally draining episode of TMN. It could be worse. Also, I think of the reactors that I've heard mimicking Laura Bailey, your mimicry might be the best. Also, having watched the campaign and now witnessing how much has changed in order of events, depth of character development (either more or less), and investment of writing focus on some events (either more or less), this episode could have been MUCH worse. You were right in your prediction that Trent loathed that cat and has a vindictive streak. In the campaign, Astrid, Eadwulf, AND Bren/Caleb had to kill all their parents. All three attended each of the murders. Astrid even poisoned her family. All of them had dinner with Bren's parents first before boarding them in the house for their family barbecue. Astrid even shooed the cat back inside when Frumpkin tried to escape (likely under Trent's instruction). P.S. I heard Mosco's mentioning chapter 9 of volume 6 of RWBY (the Forever Falling mood of 'LOST'). I'm VERY much looking forward to seeing her reaction to that. I wish that was today.

Andy

Cool story. Makes total sense, because no one Beau has ever met has ever pretended to have loyalty to one group while secretly having it to another Again, all Caleb had to do was translate even half of what Owelia was saying and/or answer one of Beau's questions, and all of this could have been avoided. But no, he's a sad white boy so obviously nothing could EVER be his fault

dainbramage7

To one of the mods on here: Please let Elijah know that next week she'll probably want to react to Mighty Nein episode 6 first before she reacts to RWBY volume 8 ep 14. I watch both reaction series and I think to avoid the emotional turmoil like there was in this set of reactions that that would be the best option to consider. I know she doesn't look at these comments often so if anyone could get that message to her that would be great. Thanks.

Aineyn

So, I don't see anyone answering one of your question, which I feel like it's important, but you kinda missed it. About the Volstrucker writting Bren's name on the paper, and the way it burned... Well, remember Bren's "entrance exam"? Burn the document and it would reappear in his office? Pretty much the same spell, really!

Dark Siri

I blame neither Beau nor Caleb. It was Owellia's "fault." She read the room and executed a perfect escape plan. She could clearly see the mutual distrust, and that Caleb was being less than honest about his background. Owellia telegraphed her observation (for us) that Beau was an armature, and that the captive was really the one in control of the situation. Caleb warned Beau what Owellia was doing, and then blindly played into it just as much as she did. Bottom line, both Caleb and Beau were manipulated by a master so good at her job that knowledge of attempted manipulation was no defense.

CrowOfAFeather

I didn't leave a comment here earlier, but I'm gonna do it now and first say that this was a good reaction, although sorry that you had to go through it right after your RWBY reaction! Secondly, since there are a some heated comments about the interrogation scene; Beau deserves most of the blame for Owelia's escape. Yes, Caleb was the one who kicked her chair over that allowed her to do so. BUT It was out of frustration with both Owelia's taunting AND Beau's insistent misplaced anger and shift of priorities. Caleb warned Beau that them arguing is exactly what Owelia wanted, and Beau fell for it. For someone who is so smart it baffles me how she saw Caleb and Owelia fighting and somehow came to the conclusion that they must be friends when the logical answer would be "Huh. Enemy of my enemy is my friend." "But she was told to not trust anyone and Caleb was so sus" It still should've been obvious to her that it would be better to confront Caleb about this AFTER they were done with Owelia. He attacked her to get back his amulet and went with the "bad monk" more than Beau, and yet she still decided to do what Owelia wanted and argue with him instead. Some people think this has to do with "not place blame on the white man" which is absolute bs. The roles could've been flipped with Beau as the white man and I'd still say Beau deserves the blame the most. Not letting go and falsely accusing Caleb despite his warning is what lead to Caleb accidentally letting Owelia escape. If she hadn't done that, they would've gotten their information and then Beau could've confronted Caleb with the rest of the gang. I'm not saying Beau deserves 100% of the blame. I'm saying she deserves the brunt of it, for it was HER actions that led to Caleb's actions, which resulted in Owelia's escape. Could Caleb have been more honest? certainly, but it's clearly a difficult topic that was better told in a setting that didn't involve Owelia's presence. And Beau most likely would've attacked him then and there anyway, also what Owelia wanted.

Boozombie

Not saying Celeb didn't play a part, I don't think anyone wouldn't agree to that. But Beau was the one escalating, it was simply not the time to start being aggressive to someone who has been on your side for two major fights. She defiantly had reason to be aggressive and distrustful it was not not the time and her approach defiantly didn't give off the vibe that she wouldn't immediately attack had he just explained. Again Both are 100% at fault but Beau's mistake in that are just a little more avoidable in that situation and I think even she acknowledges that considering how willing she is to keep her distance and listen when Celeb enters the room at the end.

Boozombie

oh because Beau was totally being so calm and collected and totally wasn't giving the vibe that she would attack him if he revealed anything about his past.

Mictla

I am glad that you are feeling better. At least I hope you are. This one is a good one. Wel they all are.

Ryan

Oh, watching this episode of The Mighty Nein after RWB... you poor, unfortunate, lesbian. Remember to hydrate! Elijah: "Salgate!" Mosco: "...salted cat?" Elijah: "Close enough..." "Caleb might suffer a little bit in this episode" Elijah might suffer a little bit in this episode, too. Oh, yeah, the show doesn't shy away from gore. Should we warn her about episode seven?

bloodyshadow1

Caleb wouldn't have had to 'warn' her if he just communicated properly. They needed to work together not be a condescending dick who refused to work with her

Derek

what years of indoctrination and a couple white lies will do to a person: the episode

Akka

I'd say let's not say anything so we can see her genuine reaction

Mitch

On the topic of queer representation Critical Role has always made their campaigns queer friendly. Every campaign features multiple queer characters and strong queer undertones in character relationships, not to mention the cast love to play around with sexuality and gender when playing(especially Liam, Taliesin and Marisha) You can always depend on the folks at CR to give us the queer rep we have been craving in media.

CrowOfAFeather

I mean, Beau didn't have to be a dick and refuse to listen and go with "aha, you two were fighting each other previously, clearly you are allies" angle. They absolutely needed to work together and Beau began to immediately play into Owelia's hands. Caleb isn't blameless, but let's not pretend that Beau not starting a fight wouldn't had led to them getting what they wanted and Owelia not ending up breaking free. And don't do the "warn" in quotations, because he did warn her. She just blatantly ignored it and also refused to work with him. Just like Owelia wanted.

CrowOfAFeather

If caleb had translated, Beau would've just seen that as an confession that "they totally work together". She was ready to throw hands regardless of what he had said or done at that point, she's hotheaded. Sorry, but it makes no sense to me. And don't bring race into this, ffs. Caleb could've been a black woman and Beau a white man and I would still say that Beau deserves most of the blame. I'm not saying Caleb is blameless, but all of this could've been avoided if Beau had been rational and decided to question caleb with the group AFTER.

Suplee215

The throuple that commit war crimes together

Suplee215

This. It doesnt become part of the show but Vex, Percy and Keyleth are all implied go be queer in behind the scenes stuff. Vax and scanlan full in the show.

Aineyn

Y'know, I just got a thought: If you love Critical Role stuff, maybe you should consider playing/streaming Dispatch? They produced that game, it's very story-heavy, I think all of them got at least a minor role in it (with Laura Bailey voicing one of the main character), and it's quite the fun ride! :) I'm sure many of us would love to watch you play, and react, to it! :)

Solus

What's crazier is that from what I remember, Beau during the actual campaign wasn't as hot headed as she is in the show, I could be wrong though, it has been a few years since I have watched their Mighty Nein campaign.

Solus

agreed, especially for that last episode of Vol. 8 RWBY

Jace

One little animation point - you could see his tears turning into steam because of just the sheer heat he's created. The way the music, animation, and voice acting all combined to reflect amount of grief that he finally was letting out after years and years... had me so emotional.

Mitch

I feel like with Keyleth and Vex they do make some clear nods to it with Keyleth getting all flustered when Vex assures her, not to mention the VERY heavily implied situationship that Vex and Zahra had in the past. As for the Mighty Nein I want to say at one point Taliesin hinted at Molly being genderfluid and Dairon uses she/they pronouns in the campaign.

Andy me

I have been so looking forward to this and... yeesss did not disappoint, Calebs backstory... it's Liam 'Sad Boy' at his finest.

Andy me

Which for three of those matches my vision of elves/half elves always imagine that as a species they are closer to Bi, maybe not in a equally attracted to both way but in a 'I'm not going to panic if I start fancying someone of a different gender than my usual... I'll just accept it...' way

Mitch

In the world of DnD elves and Tieflings are great races for portraying queerness, both because of their overall androgynous looks but also for often not really living by small minded human standards. Halflings also work well for that kind of thing, though really any race can work.

Suplee215

i was thinking more in the campiagns than the shows. but they sure did make it clearer i n the shows. in C1, most of the characters are queer but you only see them in hetero relationships. in Mighty Nein, we get to see more of that with someone whose a spoiler right now, Caleb, Molly Yasha (not considering it a spoiler due to the flashback with her). plus both of Jester's parents, Dairon as you mentioned.

Andy

Yeah, she was so prepared to attack him that she picked him up with magic and threw him across the room. Oh wait that was Caleb

Andy

Sure, Jan. Keep telling yourself that

Vegvisir92

any particular reason you're calling him Roku? Roku was a good person, the fact you're calling this guy Roku shows you know nothing about who Roku was....fk you for associating Roku with this guy.... You might have watched Avatar but obviously you should actually have been banned from watching it if you think this is what Roku was

Jace

What a wild, overdramatic comment. He looks like Roku looks-wise, and also some of his clothing. Maybe chill out and touch some grass.

Aineyn

Well, it's not a show, it's a game, but very story-heavy. Think those Telltale games, for example? It's a lot like that! Anyway, personally I have it on Steam, but Wikipedia tells me it's also on the PS5 and the Nintendo Switch (1 & 2). And, yeah, like I said, it's a fun ride! :) A bit too short, if I'm being honest, but good! And they did say they were gonna make more, so that's something to look forward to! :)

Vegvisir92

he also looks like 90% of other mentor character's yet she decides on Roku alone....also why is grass mentioned? grass is at least 80% of the area where i live so i have no idea why that is relevant

Akka

I was not ready for Caleb's backstory. Props to Liam because that scream he let out before unleashing one last inferno was so raw and primal.

Mitch

Yeah very true, with each campaign they grow more confident with showing queer characters and relationships rather than leaving everything to hints and implications. This is why Critical Role are one of my all time favorite productions companies, they always aim to tell stories where truly everyone is welcome. Which really is what DnD and fantasy in general should be.

GrandStorm

Notts speech at the end about being the parent is almost word for word from the campaign they did. Its kind of amazing, and people have already posted a lot of side by side comparisons from the campaign and show. Especially with Calebs backstory, and Notts speech from this episode.

Jessica V

There are characters inspired by avatar in this universe. It's naturally logical to call him roku since he looks similar. Also go outside and touch grass. It means you are taking something waaaaaay to seriously and losing touch on what matters in the big scheme of life. Calling Trent Icky Thong Roku doesn't matter in the long term. Especially when other reactors are calling him roku. Just relax and enjoy the reaction

Eliteguard99

I assure you Elijah, nobody hates Caleb more than he hates himself.

Eliteguard99

Roku is easily one of, if not THE worst avatar of all time. Dude did nothing but coast on the era of peace created by Kiyoshi, delayed the 100 years war buy a few decades, then he lost to a volcano and hot potato’d his colossal failure onto the next Avatar.

CrowOfAFeather

Yes, she was prepared before that. Dairon even confirms that she's impatient and hotheaded. The second Caleb had said anything remotely close to "yes I was once a volstrucker like her, but-" she would've knocked him out and tied him up. I understand you love Beau, but stop acting like she is rational, cool and calm. The show has shown us time and again that once she's agitated, she's beyond reasoning. And again, I'm NOT saying Caleb is blameless. But ALL of this could've been avoided if Beau had decided that this wasn't the right time and place to start barking at Caleb, and maybe, just maybe, focus on the actual assassin who has the information she was seeking. You know, the bigger picture? The war? The artefact? That stuff. Really don't mean to come across as rude or anything, and I hope you realize that.

Dragon0921

He just kinda looks like Roku, it's not that complicated. Has nothing to do with Roku as a character, fucking calm down.

SauceyRed

Holy shit yeah, ngl I didn't realize they were his tears evaporating, I saw the steam I was just too sucked in to think about it lmao

SauceyRed

The Caleb, Astrid, and Eadwulf polycule was so cute, but so fucked up considering the circumstances.

Alex Yoblick

Despite the circumstances that they were put into, I love how Caleb, Astrid, and Eadwulf become a throuple. I feel that polyamorous relationships definitely need more representation. I’m glad that I have already grown to appreciate them before this episode thanks to several fanfics.

AustynG123

RWBY 8x13 straight to MN 5 is fucking brutal

Aineyn

I mean, she did tried to strangle Toya during the Devil Toad fight... Just saying!

GMstrBert

I think it was in episode two of the campaign where she attacked a couple guards that were simply taking her in for questioning. Certainly didn’t do herself any favors with that move. She’s extremely hot headed during the first 40ish episodes of the campaign. I mean, knowing what we find out later, her attitude at the time was understandable.. but a lot of people didn’t like her for a reason. I’m surprised how much I absolutely adore Beau this early in the show considering it took around 40ish episodes for me to actually like her at all in the campaign.

Miranda Corvus

His design is based on a mix of Roku and Sozin dude Its not that deep Why are we freaking out over animated characters???

Miranda Corvus

The piece of paper that burned in her hand will appear in Trent Ikithon's office Just like the paper he burned as a test when he was just a boy Basically: She outed him

bloodyshadow1

the fact that it is impossible for this fandom to hold the sad white boy accountable for anything is truly disgusting and goes against everything the character is meant to be. Caleb and liam holds him accountable more then the fandom ever did. Beau fell for Owelia's tricks? 2 seconds in and Caleb is refusing to share information or even translating, the thing he volunteered to do. Caleb can free her twice, attack Beau and you people will still blame Beau for acting like they had been attacked and betrayed, you know like she was.
