So both Tari and Scanlin where played by the same person Sam, however before this season started Sam was battling cancer and they needed an out to help him recover . So Sam gave his character to another actor and Scanlin in the campaign had left and returned during the Whispered One Arc so don’t worry you’ll see Scanlin again!

So because of IRL health stuff (Sam's cancer) in the show they A. Recast Tary (who joined right after the table's version of Bard's Lament - before the one year skip). B. Have Scanlan in S4 but gave him an out (this episode) ... For now

I know it was a battle scene but omfg that song battle harmony with the cast was so beautiful 😭

Geo23

I believe it was said that the high note at the end of the song is Sam just pitched up

3:55 - It's his dad bod! 10:27 - Magic chicken! 14:20 - It was Garmelie, the annoying satyr Percy, Vax, Vex and Keyleth met in the Fey Realm back in season 2 who guided them to Vex's new bow and drew lewd art of them including - Vex with ENORMOUS boobs, Keyleth as a buff dom mom having her way with Vax, and Percy with 3 "peni" all with the heads of Vex, Vax and Keyleth. We also got a glimpse at his true form, which looks very similar to a certain character from Mighty Nein. 14:31 - "What the fuck is up with that?" is a reference to campaign 3 where the group Bell's Hells played a game of the same name. They ask each other questions about themselves and end them with the phrase "what the fuck is up with that?". This also became the title of a seqment in their discussion series "4-Sided Dive". 22:25 - This moment was one of the most popular moments in the campaign, though the timing and cause were different from the animated series. It happened much earlier in the campaign, right after Vox Machina defeated the Chroma Conclave. Scanlan was killed in battle and in an attempt to revive him they brought in Kaylie to try and call his spirit back during the resurrection ritual. Scanlan promised Kaylie he wouldnt die, so when he saw VM brought her in and showed her his body and that he couldn't keep his promise to her, that was the breaking point that caused his crash out. 27:03 - Lionel was a guest pc played by Jon Heder, who was raised by ducks (no seriously) and the duck became his totem animal. This little transformation is a reference to that fact! 28:46 - That actually IS Sam, though they definitely pitched up his voice. Same said that note killed him considering he was still recovering from his cancer surgery at the time. 29:48 - The Dark Bard was voiced by Tom Cardy, a popular comedic musician online who also MC'd and played as a guest character in one of CR's live shows! 33:00 - As many people have already commented, one of the key factors as to why Scanlan wasn't in this season as often was because Sam was still recovering from his cancer surgery at the time. Hopefully he'll come back full force for the final season!

After I heard Sam was battling throat cancer seeing Scanlan hit those high notes when he’s singing makes me think that is Sam’s way of saying “fuck you cancer”

.yes Tary is gay. Hilariously found out in the campaign but they sped it up here. In campaign he wasn't sure and his father sent the only romantic interest he ever had away when the 2 men kissing. Cue a bar scene of vox machina setting him up with a chick in whistone. The next da Tary was sure he was gay.

Chet Bliese

What's my mother's name? That question still gives me chills.

28:41 Guess what? That was indeed Sam fuckin' Riegel. He hit an E6 up to a F#6.

This episode is good and does a decent job of using some of the elements of the OG Bard’s Lament from the tabletop sessions, but it’s no where near as gut wrenching as the OG version. And then after all of that Sam sucker punched everyone with the introduction of the absolute goober that is Tary Darrington.

In the campaign, Lionel was raised by a family of ducks before he met Scanlan. Though, I thought he was true polymorphed by Scanlan but I was wrong. So, seeing Lionel be turned into a duck was the cutest thing ever. Also not so fun fact, When they reunited with Scanlan, Sam being who he is to cause drama had Scalan praising Lionel in his strength and being all best buddies with him.... WHILE GROG WAS RIGHT THERE! I was so mad at Sam (I was young at the time and when someone hurts my favorite character....) I was not a happy camper. When Lionel and Grog battled each other (or I think it was zombies or something) I kid you not, Jon Heder ( VA of Lionel) was getting critical hits while Travis got 3 NAT ONES IN A ROW! It took a huge hit on both his and Grogs self-esteem.

Fun fact: If they kept this where it would have happened in the campaign, Scanlin going off on the rest of Vox Machina would have been how Season 3 ended, which would have been a ROUGH place to potentially end their show, since S3 was made expecting to not get a 4th, but since they have a 4th and 5th, they decided to include it, because it was a fan favorite moment full of tense emotions.

"Season four, episode eight: Fuck!" Imagine a series where every episode has some form of "fuck" in the title. And yes, one episode would be "Fuck a duck!" Elijah's poor eyeballs. First she sees Percy's gun, um, fully cocked, and then she sees a floppy purple dildo the size of a baseball bat. And then she sees Pike and Taryon, um, dueling tongues. Does Anex get paid by the blur?

So we have Scanlin in an Elvis inspired getup with his bouncer being named Lionel presumably after Lionel Ritchie I love the musical references man

Scanlan going late-stage-Vegas Elvis here

Don't underestimate Sam's singing skills - especially since he's still doing it after getting throat cancer. Katie's line about not hitting those high notes like he used to is a heartbreaking line when we think how it has affected him, yet he's still showing he can do it. As such, Scanlan's short time this season is also helping to give Sam time to recover more. He has had bit characters throughout the season, but nothing too strenuous. And Tary was his character in the campaign as well; he just chose to entrust him to Wayne so Tary could have his own voice and gave Wayne his full blessing to play him however he wanted. The Bard's Lament happened around the end of season 3 in the campaign, and as such, there were bad terms between Scanlan and the party for a lot longer. And trust me, "What was my mother's name?" was just as hard hitting a question there as it was here.
