In Demon Slayer 1x5 My Own Steel Sword, we get a sword and that's cool but personally, I'd be happier about the crow.

We have been blessed today. Prayers to the Laptop Gods.

benj

Yesssss the crow is so great, one of my favorite running gags in the show. The voice acting for it is just so funny, gets me everytime.

arcana✦vox

Noice! The perks of being an incessant night owl.

Billy Nowosielski

You will definitely need to stream your crow raising adventures. There can be no better content

Megan

The infomercial was gold. Yeah I wish there was more development with the female characters but I heard it gets better in the manga? I don’t know I haven’t read it. And we eventually get introduced to some in the anime.

MartianElegy

Funnily enough with the female characters skit, the person who wrote the manga for Demon Slayer was revealed to be a woman in weekly Shonen Jump! But they prefer to be referred to as a gender neutral author. It's a lot like how the FMA mangaka wanted to keep her gender under wraps.

Keegan Brakhage

demon slayer gets a pass on female characters for being written by a woman haha

Brimmy

Probably because that is Bakugo's VA Alex XD also there is T H E most annoying as fuck noise in the next episode last time i watched this with a friend i had to mute it cuz neither of us could deal with it XD

Rice

Lmao is Nezuko going to be the Invisible girl of the DS reaction series? What an insane plot twist! In all seriousness though I think Alex is going to really like the butterfly girls and Tamayo when we get there.

I wonder if that played a role in how the female characters were written in the manga, at least in the beginning we’ve seen animated so far. If they had to make the conscious effort to pander to a male audience. I imagine not being a man and writing shonen would be a lot of pressure. Actually just doing manga for shonen jump in general is ruthless or so I’ve heard. Who knows I’m just making guesses lol.

Megan

I’m glad your reacting to the “taisho secrets” at the end now.

MartianElegy

Tanjiro's compassion for that demon in its final moments was surprising for me when I first watched this series!! He had no way of knowing that the demon had a sad backstory and used to be human at some point, but he simply felt the sorrow in it's final moments 😭 keep this interaction in mind when you continue!

Aura Y

While Tanjiro ultimately seems like a sweet and hopeful protagonist, his story truly is a pretty sad one. Having lost nearly his entire family, he has now become a full-fledged Demon Slayer, grasping on the hopes of saving his Sister. Also you make a valid point about Nezuko... when cuteness supercedes self-actualization and nuance. Last note on this episode, it's crazy how you noted that the black-haired kid gave off Bakugo vibes, because he's played by the same Japanese VA as Bakugou haha

Where was the sadness when he killed those two demons at the start of the Final Selection. He just kinda killed them and seemed pumped about it

willmarko

HAHAHA the face that Alex made when the two girls recited off the ranks (Good thing you don't really have to remember that).

Yes it gets better than girl who doesn’t talk…but it’s not that much better sadly…

Skyler Anderson

Funny that you say that about female characters in this show since the writer of the manga allegedly is a woman. It's not confirmed or anything cause they try to keep their identity a secret. But just a funny observation

TJ

Only 5 episodes in and making bold statements like the mangaka can't write female characters lol funnily enough, the writer is a woman. Just keep watching there's many more characters who haven't been introduced.

Andre Tan

So I can’t rmb if it’s been mentioned yet, but demons used to be humans but when they turn to a demon, they develop this instinctual hunger and craving for human flesh, which was what you saw with the hands demon earlier when he ate his own brother. So it’s kinda like not their fault. The thing about tanjiro is that since he knows that they used to be humans he still feels compassion for demons despite knowing he has to kill them if not they will kill more people

Race Jenkins

I'm not a fan of showing an antagonist's backstory right after they're no longer a threat, and this show does that several times. I mean, wouldn't the fighting have more weight if we knew the tragic background before it was over?

benj

Have to give special props for the infomercial chief. That shit had me laughing hard, I needed a good honest real laugh. Also, that infomercial is literally directed at me...and for 19.99 I will take your entire stock of gagged kawaii imouto characters, thank you very much.

Jake White

Ohhhh yeah man, crows are unbelievable lol. We always have at least a few dozen in the area around my place, since I live out in the country in South Carolina surrounded by woods. I always toss bread out for them and just seeing them interact and cooperate is always fascinating. They’re so smart that they’ll drop tough nuts in front of car tires to let the heavy car crack the shell open for them and they communicate in vast networks with each other, giving info on things like places with high concentrations of food or valuables, places or animals to stay away from, etc. They’re basically what you’d get if you gave monkeys wings lol

Jake White
>>77689603

Sorry about the lil rant lol I’m somewhat known around my friend group as “the annoying animal facts guy” lmao

Snaideri

Funny you would say the guy gives you Bakugo vibes, when in fact he has the same voice actor as Bakugo does

Athena

Take note that they said FIVE survived...👀

bryn sutton

i love this show but i can’t help but feel like muting and infantilizing nezuko was a HUGE missed opportunity for the story. no other demon character is mute or infantilized, so why does becoming a demon turn nezuko from a person into an object? being written by a woman doesn’t automatically guarantee the female characters are going to be well-written, and though there are a few in later episodes and the manga that get better treatment, none of them get the depth of characterization or focus that the male characters get. idk i'm just imagining how much fmab would suffer if alphonse was reduced to a kawaii teapot instead a full-fledged character with vivacity and personality and an arc of his own, and imagining how much better demon slayer *could* have been if the kamados' role weights were more balanced (like the elrics) and nezuko's character had been elevated to the same caliber as the other main characters.

It really isn't that deep, people constantly trying to force a genre written specifically for teenage boys to have deep female characters is pretty weird. There is an entire genre called shoujo you should check out.

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Yeah demon slayer isn’t known for its deep portrayal of female characters lol, but honestly I like the "female characters are basically non existent or just in the background" way more than the "look at these 13 year olds with double D breasts that break the laws or physics, also their boob armor has the sizes of a bikini" route, or the "overly aggressive sexualized badass but in a very look-at-me-being-a-woman-way" route. So honestly demon slayer is still a win in that regard.

Alexis

Female mangaka does not = well written female character. I agree, whether it was intended as a joke, Nezuko is not a good character. She is simply a cute plot device. I hope as the story progresses she will get more screen time/development.

benj
>>77742902

Damn I love Nezuko and think she is a great character.

benj

Crazy how we're 5 episodes in and most of the stuff people have to say about this show is just purely negative. Did everyone vote for this show in the poll just to shit on it 24/7? Goodwin seems to be enjoying the beginning of this series than most of the people here watching the reactions are lmao. At least these reactions are just amazing so far, keep em' coming Alex.

Winnie

I have to agree on the female characters thing lol. The infomercial while funny, rings way too true. Yes I know that there are more characters to be introduced, however it’s more of an issue with shounen in general. Shoujo often has very well written male characters despite it being aimed at girls, so why can’t shounen have well written female characters despite being targeted towards boys? The demographic argument really doesn’t hold much water in that regard. However, if the author really is a woman, I understand her plight, as discussed in earlier comments. It’s just very frustrating to see so much potential be wasted. A good example would be in MHA, the raid on the yakuza lair when they’re trying to save Eri. Ochako, Tsu, and Nejire along with Ryuku stayed outside and didn’t do anything until the very end of the fight. A lot of people would probably counter that by saying that they couldn’t do anything bc it’s a tight labyrinth of tunnels underground and the people with flying quirks would be best suited for fighting outside. To which I say: why did Hori have to write it that way to begin with? If he didn’t want to include any of the girls, why did he bother to bring them into the fight? This isn’t me saying he’s a horrible writer, it’s something to think about. And if anyone is going to ask me why I bother watching shounen, it’s because I enjoy a lot of the other aspects of it. Me pointing out an issue within a genre doesn’t mean I hate it lol. So yes, it actually can be that deep, and no, it’s not that weird to want just as much depth from female characters as is given to male characters. On a different note, I really like how the demons started out as humans. The internal struggle that Tanjiro has is very fascinating.

Darby

Personally, I prefer to watch shows/movies without pushing my own personal beliefs/wants into the show. It wasn't made just for me and that's fine. I'll enjoy it for what the creator intended. "Why did Hori have to write it that way to begin with?" -- It's not your place (or anyone else's) to question that. There's zero circumstances during the writing process where I would want the writer/creator to think "This scene is exactly how I envisioned it BUT do I have enough [insert demographic] participating?" or "Is there enough representation in this sequence?". There are so many examples of shounen with female characters that are written fantastically (e.g., Black Clover, Jujutsu Kaisen, the Fate series, etc.) -- there's no need to force it when it's not necessary.

Darby

At the end of the day, this story is about Tanjiro trying to turn Nezuko back into a human. It moves at such a quick pace that there's really no time for the full development of non-essential characters. There won't be episodes without Tanjiro in it (yet) like how MHA has episodes focusing on the classmates/villains other than Deku. Also, I wouldn't judge the female characters in the show just yet, being 5 episodes in. You've got a lot left to see lol

benj
>>77786299

Exactly this... the story is HYPER focused on Tanjiro/Nezuko's dynamic and his goal of turning her back into a human, we only stay with Tanjiro during the story and the plot moves at a lightning fast pace. This isn't going to be a long shounen at all, with the manga already done the final anime episode count will be somewhere around 90-100 episodes. So right now with the current arc being done we are already almost halfway done with the story which is insane to think about.

Ruma Risto

Finally someone who agrees with me about Nezuko! I mean, she's not even a character, more like Tanjirou's dog.

Geneva The Weeba

"They look so awesome with their cute little masks," "oh, well, this one is not turning into a human again," "Would you like to save your game?" "That is *not* a lot of people," "Oh nonono nononono," (the reaction to the twins kills me every time) "Got it. I'll definitely remember all those," "Finally, the birds are on our side," "You're doing it wrong. It's kinda cool though, having a sparrow," (Blond Boy time????) "He's got the hard head, the strong grip, the powerful nose," "Look at my rocks. This is my rock collection, it's unrelated to the task, just wanted to show you guys," "You think you understand the range of humanity, but the truth is, most of our worlds are very narrow," "People are all more similar than they are different, of course, but the lessons and the intrigue lies in differences," "I heard it was time for me to re-enter the plot," Just. The Whole Freaking Infomercial. I can't wait to see the YouTube comments tonight. If someone ever ends up clipping that, I'm sending it to everyone I know immediately. "Dude, buy yourself a bed," "Oh my god, it talks. I'm actually happy about that. Now give it a personality," "We can't write female characters, but maybe we can write crow characters," "Bring it on, ya little bi-"

flanne

I love the way you give hard facts like the nezuko informercial like you're not raising your voice but that is some cold passion!! I felt that and it also made me laugh

tine sess

That Nezuko part made me laugh so hard 🤣. It's crazy because she has the best most interesting character set up...but man ...it is a slow unraveling

VesperQuartz15

Right on the Bakugo Vibes that is hisVoice actor. He is really talented. He Plays lots of range of emotions and attitudes.
