not so sure how I feel about this one. this is the first of the "big" season 6 plotlines that kinda loses me. the obvious narrative issue here is that we're just coming off the heels of the biggest twist ever -- so when then they try to pull another, significantly weaker twist RIGHT after, not only is it less impactful but the story suffers for it I think it would have worked a lot better if we'd, you know... shown, or at the very least referenced, Mel before. like way, way before her just showing up in the story out of nowhere as Amy's best friend since childhood doesn't really track. not only is she Amy's bestie, but she loves Rory TOO ...and she just didn't show up to the wedding of her two BFFs?? (I mean... you know what I mean. don't try to be clever!) she doesn't need to be as fleshed out as River, but she should have been introduced much sooner. imagine if we lived in a universe where this happened. it would be the coolest thing you've ever seen --- REWRITE CORNER: Mel should have been dropped into the following episodes: -5x1 (replacing Jeff, the most boring one-off character in Who history, whose only purpose in the story is to make Rory look like a butt-monkey) -5x7 (the dream episode, where perhaps she moved to the city, but returned to assist her best friend through pregnancy while her husband is busy being the only doctor for the whole village) ...and of course, Amy's wedding imagine if this is how this unfolded, and we discovered that these two characters who we've known for over a whole season are the same person... it would be a mind-blowing back-to-back sequence of events. but hey, i'm not a screenwriter 🙈 --- credit where it's due though. we really are in peak Who in terms of general vibe, character interactions, quipping, and cute moments. the dialogue is just so fucking sharp. "YOU SHOT MY TARDIS" "ITS YOUR FAULT" "AAAAAAA" "shut up Hitler" "Rory take Hitler and put him in that cupboard" "right... Hitler, cupboard. cupboard, Hitler. in you go"

Nice! We had to wait for a couple-month-long mid-season break before this episode aired. Both this season and next season were split in half for their original airing, which was a little frustrating but I suppose makes narrative sense here. Also, the idea that Time Lords have a set number of regenerations (12, for a total of 13 lives) came from Classic Who. It's not been re-confirmed in New Who until this story.

Mastervodo

Seems like a throwaway episode, but IT IS NOT! Is very important!

Leo Cap

"i'm not gay" "yes you are" 😂😂

Leo Cap

i'm sorry but the little robots are SO FUNNY. "you are authorized. your existence will continue" "you are unauthorized. you will feel a slight tingling sensation and then death" “only two life forms remain. this will be rectified” 💀

Merkavar

A jumper is a sweater. Apparently she thought wearing a jumper will show off her new boobs?

Luka Poser

A strange beast of an episode all things considered. Coming back after 3 months stewing on that show-stopping midseason finale, to a romcom & loredump episode that tosses out its title's premise by literally closing the door on Hitler, is quite an adjustment especially now when people just binge the series. One thing I like is it's maybe Moffat's most on-the-nose Meta episode. Mel, this childhood best friend who we have never seen, is both a real-life retcon and is probably River retroactively inserting herself into her parents' timeline. By completely ignoring the "killing Hitler" thought exercise, it's also a response to episodes about fixing history like Fires Of Pompeii or Waters Of Mars. The line "So you decided to use time travel to punish dead people," feels like an admission that there is sometimes a limit to the kinds of stories Doctor Who can do.

Alkaris

"Get in the closet Hitler" is just so funny. xD

Sorcerer Rumburak

Yes, a timelord has limited regenerations: 12. Therefore there can only be 13 Doctors.

Rach

I still stand by my previous episode comment that the Moff is the best to ever do it. That said, the convenient childhood best friend that has never once been mentioned is a little contrived for me, and some of the dialogue he gives River this episode is a little cringe. ("I've got to go weigh myself"). Ew. Love Rory punching Nazis though! And some lovely emotional beats.

Rach

She actually said Jodhpurs I believe. Tight fitting horse riding trousers, so a butt joke rather than a boob joke.

Merkavar

Ok that does make more sense. I always heard jumpers but never really understood why she would say that. Like jumpers aren’t known for being sexy or revealing or what ever she was going for in her new body.

Iwasneverhere

I saw an interview with Arthur Darvill where he said upon reading the script where he punches H*, he sent flowers to the writers in thanking them.

Steven

It says jodhpurs, but I often don't trust the subtitles for Who. There are many instances of them getting simple things wrong like missing out words or oversimplifying a sentence, but the worst example I remember was when Rose was laughing on the Weakest Link in Bad Wolf and the woman watching's subtitles goes "Oh my god, I think she knows", when it's audibly I DON'T think she knows. Understandably, it trips up reactors every time

Cleverusernamed97

Rewatching this again, I do kind of wish they had briefly mentioned Amy had a best friend in the previous season. I get they addressed it, but idk I feel like it would be a bit more of a shock if we knew about a best friend before this episode. But you just gotta love that awkward moment when your future daughter is the reason why you get together in the first place.

Ben

Technically Mels did go to Amy and Rory's wedding but as River to give Amy the diary to bring the Doctor back into existance.

dean worrall

some things in the past are so pivotal you can't re-write them, it would mess with the timeline too badly.. killing H before the things he did would mean we probably wouldn't be where we are today... rocket research was driven by them trying to blitz the UK, atomic research likewise because of him.. and so on..

James Fleischman

I really love seeing such a character arc in a single episode. Mel has aspects of River and River has aspects of Mel but they're definitely a world apart.

Daniel King

Good episode, next good episode is 13, the next three are just filler episodes. The year of specials, which is why budget was increased

Death Lego

Mels: "Oh cut to the Song, it's getting boring" I love the way he tries to tell you. If we are paying close enough attention. 😆

Sorcerer Rumburak

This is known fact since the early days of the classic Who-Series. Therefore: No spoiler.

Martin

Some say Adolf is still in the cupboard right now.... Excellent episode, we all get thrown by the title and I'm assuming in true Moffett style he's done that on purpose to misdirect us about the true nature of the episode, but I love it all and seeing all that River character development is wonderful. Also shout out to Matt selling his ass off in both the TARDIS with the interface scene and his 'death', fantastic work. 'Please, just....help' Oh my god. Interesting talk about Rory, it's always known how much life with the Doctor can change the life of a companion but does anyone change more than Rory? From how he is as a kid and even when we first meet him to now being the last centurion and laying out Nazi's, he maybe has changed the most being with the Doctor.

Matthew Case

I wished Mel at at least appeared before to make her coming into this more meaningful. Even if she was just at the house with Amy and Rory in the opening of this season when they got the letter

Cleverusernamed97

That, or they could've at least mentioned a best friend or something in the past, maybe have this episode be the reveal of what she actually looks like, or something. I feel like anything would've been a little better than a random person showing up, and we're just supposed to believe they have this bond to the point Amy names her daughter after her without ever really hearing anything about her until this episode. The explanation of her not being a wedding person is kind of weak because you'd think she'd at least be talked about more either way.

Malamute

Well, as far as Hitler goes, the Tesseract" would have come back and "gave him hell". :-)

Earthen

Classic fans know this. I wouldn't classify it as a spoiler, but it hasn't come up in the new series yet.

Nicholas Sulikowski

And you never once killed Hitler! Not. Once! -Tim Meadows, maybe

Darren

It’s funny you mention the kiss between Amy and the doctor. Moffat has said that was one of his regrets in writing.

Carl Wilson

The way I rationalize it is that the Silence sent Mels-River into Amy's timeline at some point after the events of the previous episode, so the reason we haven't seen her before is that she wasn't there. Amy and Rory's timeline got rewritten. Should the Silence have the ability to do that? Shrug emoji.

Dreameroutthere

Very small bit of lore about Time Lords you get from Classic Who. A Time Lord can regenerate a total of 12 times, for 13 faces. Smith is the 11th Doctor.

Ejigantor

I remember when I first watched this I was dissatisfied with the "they raised her by growing up alongside her" thing, especially in regards to how quickly and easily Amy and Rory seemed to accept it. I'm OK with it now, because there's nothing they can do about it at this point. And also because, while we only saw Mel in the flashback moments in this one episode, Amy and Rory actually had all those years. River was brainwashed and conditioned to be obsessed with The Doctor, which means Mel's behavior in history classes was a fun bit of foreshadowing. And I agree, Rory is just the best.

Rach

Personally I think Doctor Who doesn't really have 'filler' episodes, since the show was the designed as a sort of pseudo-anthology the one-off stories are the main point and the 'ongoing plot' stuff is really a bonus. Episode 10 and 11 are some of the shows best, in my opinion.

SeanBoi

I share your wish to gain a few inches in height lol I'm trans guy who didn't come out and start hormones until I was mid 30's - I'm only 4'11"! I would kill for like, 4 or 5 inches

SeanBoi

I haven't seen the OG Doctor Who but I seem to remember that there were a few weird regenerations in the series like the War Doctor, and Tennant regenerating but keeping the face

bentendo

Time Lords have 13 lives, so energy for 12 regenerations. Also, when the time is right, waaay in the future of your Doctor Who viewing... I will link you to a special episode of Doctor Who Confidential which finally shows River's story in the right order. Moffat is a genius writer and to me this is the peak of the modern era of the show.

Lazzy

Well, I'm a transwoman who's a little too tall for my tastes at 5'11'', so let's trade.
