I wonder how much of the Twelfth Doctor was Peter's input, and how much was Steven Moffat.

Spidermoo

Capaldi's Doctor is really rough around the edges at this point. No spoilers, but I've always seen this characterization of him in his early episodes being the result of him not dying on Trenzalore, that he was so ready to die there that him surviving has put him through an identity crisis. It'll be hard to adapt to 12 at first, but it's something that's worth it come the finale.

Chewy

He's a very different doctor to Matt, he definitely comes across colder initially . The soldier thing is a hangover from the fighting on Trenzalore. I think he's genuinely done with Fighting , war and military figures . If you go back to the Tenth Doctor he displays a similar annoyance with UNIT at points when they get too Soldiery, that's not a particular trait reserved for number 12. All I will say is that every regeneration is jarring initially , trust the show :-)

James Wilson

This season felt like it was trying something different, like his regeneration wasn’t finished and that confusion the doctor gets when he regenerates was a longer issue.

DeathSwitch

This episode proved 11s point. He needs help. I think it's important to remember that 11 spent hundreds of years around soldiers on Trenzalore. People dying every day, never having lasting connections to people ect. You cannot come out of an experience like that and still remain a happy go lucky person. While I agree he was a bit short with Journey, the first impression he had of her was her pointing her gun at him and threatening to take the Tardis. He didnt know about the Daleks or her brother at this point too. With Clara, they're friends, he's just poking fun at her. There will be tough times ahead, I can tell, but without spoilers, there is a narrative reason why 12 is like this. Trust in Moffatt he hasn't led us astray yet.

Darth Muppet

Capaldi is definitely different from Matt. It was a little easier for me to adjust to Peter because I was already so familiar with him playing Malcolm Tucker. Thing is though… he is probably the most Doctorish Doctor of them all for me. I can’t wait for you to see all of what I’m trying to hint at. He’ll win you over.

Gary Stevenson

My brother was part of one of the biggest Who podcasts in the UK around this time, and the rumours out of the BBC is that Moffat originally planned on leaving when Matt did, but was talked into staying on for Peter’s time as the Doctor, so he decided to do something hugely different and bring back the grumpy, unlikeable older man that Hartnell was. I personally really struggled with Peter at first as I loved Matt, and Matt is still my favourite Doctor (as someone that grew up with classic Who). However, Peter really grew on me and they do make changes to his character to make him more likeable as it goes on, and he really grows into the role.

kris

ATTACK EYEBROWS!

Robert A.

Mad at Steven Moffat? The queue starts on your left -- current wait time is 836 years, 3 months, 21 days....

Pd

I love capaldi but I'm English. We all love a grumpy Scottish man and of course The Thick of It

Robert A.

In many ways, Peter Capaldi hearkens back to elements of Classic Who. There was one Doctor in particular who needed an entire story to become...less unlikeable, shall we say? Even the First Doctor was quite a bit different for a story until (as Twelve said) he visited Skaro for the first time. Clara is not my favorite new-Who companion, but the rapport she has with Twelve is easily my favorite Doctor/Companion pairing. At this point he NEEDS her, and she comes through, often bringing the snark-to-snark combat in the process.

James Hoffmann

Angela, Peter's Doctor is definitely cold and abrasive in these early episodes. Part of it might have been Peter still learning the character. 12 is supposed to be an older doctor, a bit more "grumpy", more like the first doctor, and I think Peter might have taken it a bit too far at first. I think he does soften up later as he gets more comfortable in the role. But there is a narrative reason too. That is why the Doctor asks Clara's "am I a good man?". This Doctor is facing an identity crisis. But it is all going somewhere. Trust Moffat. :) Believe me when you get to the end of Peter's run, you will miss him and cry when he regenerates. Peter's Doctor becomes fantastic by the end. But he is definitely different than Matt.

Michael

Your broken heart will heal and you will come to love this doctor. Clara is important to the doctor and the story arc is beautiful ... hang in there.

Dave Frear

Journey uses her brother's name at the start (Kai). As for Twelve... After his casting was announced someone made a "Malcom Tucker is the Doctor" trailer (which I believe someone linked in a previous comment section) that cut together Doctor Who footage with Capaldi's The Thick of It character and this episode in particular has a similar (if less-sweary) feel to it. The change of character intrigued me, though I was a bit worried about where it was going. I don't want to say any more, but Twelve is one of my favourites. No need to tell you to stick with it, but I hope you enjoy the ride.

Zachary Vail (Zeebee)

Sorry you are having a hard time with Capaldi so far. He is a bit more like some of the earliest Doctors right now. I think you will like how he ends up being. He is especially heaven sent.. . Really good to have by your side in a ship that’s about to crash

Michael

Twelve "feels" like an alien to me and reminds me of Classic Who. He needs Clara and their story arc does a nice job of bridging, and reconnecting, Classic with New Who.

Josef Schiltz

We knew that you would have a tough time with Peter. Hope you give him more of a chance. Angela, btw. since you've spoken of your passion for steam punk, I was just wondering if you've seen Kelly Boesch AI Art channel on YouTube? Quite some stuff on there.

Oty Safiry

Absolutely. He gained a whole new regeneration cycle and he's not sure who he is exactly and he's trying to figure things out still. His character de envelopment is amazing. I love the moment he realizes who he is.

Liem

I like that there’s a sort of repeat situation with 12 and Clara. Like with 9/10 and Rose. The Doctor said Rose made him better, after everything that happened to him in the Time War. This episode shows that 12 needs Clara. The Doctor is going through a massive crisis mentally. He doesn’t think he’s a good man. That is so sad to think! But having Clara there… maybe she could make him better, and see that he is a good man. And that’s why he really hoped there could be a good Dalek. Because that could mean everything could change.

Vinny Johnston

You have to remember that this is a Scot writing for a Scot , we can be abrasive until you get to know us , but it is so much worth it in the end.

DarkStar 57

I am glad to see your talk about this episode because Capaldi's doctor here is very sharply different to previous Doctors...but at the same time not. He reminded me so much of those flashes of coldness/darkness that Eccelston, Tennant and Smith had delivered in various moments. Just way more pronounced and I actually really like that dimension brought out and I hope it continues. It also feels like he is trying to convince himself to "expand". The line from the last episode "I'm not your boyfriend Clara" "I never said you were" "I never said it was you who said that"...really cemented in my mind how I expect Dr Who to go for Capaldi's run. Some VERY interesting guesses about characters in the final discussion!! Very exicted to see how this goes!!

David Vandervliet

Its not made clear - but the school Clara is teaching at, Coal Hill School, is a big connection to the classic series.

Isaac

I absolutely love Capaldi's Doctor. The Doctor is an old man who has been through more trauma than anyone can even imagine. Instead of being goofy all the time, he has finally taken the mask off - that he's hurting, and he has stopped caring about people's feelings. I also love how he evokes the crotchety air of the classic doctors like the 1st and 6th. He is absolutely still the hero that we know and love, but he has some serious stuff to figure out. I love that that brings so much weight to him. Because if I had lived as long as he had, I would be fucking DONE as well. And also, the mask has been taken off that the Doctor has always been kind of an asshole. It's laughed off with previous regenerations that he is non-commital, forgetful of important things to his companions' lives, and selfish. This is the first time that those issues are taken seriously and explored.

Jeff Ratcliff

I'm reminded of my somewhat negative reaction when I watched this episode when it was new. Eventually I embraced 12, but for those who had a similar reaction to ours, when he's "redeemed" will vary from person to person.

James Hoffmann

This episode centers around the question of can a Dalek become good or are they inherently always evil? In other words, can a person change their nature? It ties in nicely with the Doctor's question "Am I am a good man?"

Ell Zee

"That's the trouble with good men, too many rules" The Doctor(Matt) "Good men don't need rules, you should ask yourself why I have so many!" Matt's doctor didn't think of himself as a good man.

Isaiah

The theme of the season honestly

Isaiah

12 is the most alien modern Doctor we’ve seen so far

JengoFox

It’s also worth noting that 10 and 11 both showed that they become more cold and calculating without a companion to bounce of off, it’s even shown that rose changes 9 for the better, 12 here is not only a new incarnation dealing with the knowledge that he never expected to live past 11. He is clearly spending more and more time alone while Carla lives her life. It was 3 weeks since Clara saw the doctor but who knows how long it could have been for him.

Jeremy B

Absolutely this 💯 %

Chris Carroll

I feel ya with the hard time.... But trust us... He's worth it

Nikita Pascari

Capaldi's 12 is actually the most Doctorish Doctor in the modern series! The goody warmness of 10 and 11, the flirting with the companions was very much out of character for the Doctor of the classic series. He is very very old, and like Vastra said "The veil has lifted". 12 has the most character development out of any Doctor before him, and Peter is also still finding his feet in the role in S8.

V1rtu0u5

😸😸😸😸😸😸😸

Benjamin Davis

Peter Capaldi wanted to play the Doctor like his favourite Doctors Hartnell and Pertwee

Natalie

I think the only things they misplaced with Twelve early on are his comments on Clara's appearance. I think they were trying to imply that they were never gonna ever be romantic, but they played their hand a little too heavily. Otherwise, I love his aloof alienness and I believe you'll find over time that he is secretly one of the nicer Doctors. He's just got poor bedside manner.

glenn sawyer

By the end of this season you will start to like him. He has some of the best episodes, Moffett doesn't disappoint. Just remember it's very nostalgic at this point after the 50th, he is gruff like the 1st doctor but has aspects of the 3rd, but because you haven't seen classic who, you're not familiar with that.

Brenda

I definetly feel like his aversion to solders at this point is due to him just coming back from the thousand year war on Trenzilor. The Doctor knows he can’t have a solder in the TARDIS. He knows he needs someone who won’t take orders and won’t take his guff no matter how much he posters. He needs a Clara right now. To him right now I think fee feels a solder would be an enabler.

Benjamin Davis

He actually never watched 6, he only watched 1-4 and 9-11

OfficiallyGames

I like the doctors grounchy/rough era as it just shows he can be that way (atleast for a longer period than the one offs we've had before) , not always sunshine and smiles. Though pretty sure some of the stuff he does say is just dry british humour/sarcasm which is always fun seeing an american over react / take seriously.

Nikita Pascari

To answer your question, at this point in time I was fully on board with 12 because I loved the additide change. I was watching these as they were coming out, waiting months between seasons. I was excited and ready for the Doctor to be a little darker, a little colder, more of a force of nature. Plus, I was familiar with Peter Capaldi from "The Thick of It", so when it was announced that he was going to be playing the Doctor I knew instantly that we are getting a major shift and to what direction the shift will take place (Malcom Tucker is an INTENSE MENACE). BUT... He was not anywhere near my favorite... yet. When I think of my 12 being "The Doctor" none of the scenes from early S8 come to mind. At this point I didnt think any future Doctor will top Matt for me... And yet Peter grew slowly and persistently to #1. I didnt think my top 3 Doctor Who episodes would ever change with all of them being from Tennants run (Blink, Midnight, Forrest in the Library 2parter) especially after liking Matt more but none of his episodes broke into top 3... And yet again I was wrong.

Benjamin Davis

Angela I am sorry for my reaction I just had a flashback to the row I had with my family about 12 when this episode aired. 12 is the most relatable Doctor for me because I have Autism and I struggle a lot like 12 does at the start and I grew with 12. Have hope because 12 does have a character arc . I also wasn't a fan of 11 because I wanted a Doctor like 12 after 10.

Benjamin Davis

Peter Capaldi wanted to be exactly like Hartnell in the first few episodes because Hartnell was his Doctor

Jef Hughes

Keep the faith, Angela. This journey with the 12th Doctor is lengthy but there’s good reason for that.

Samuel West

Capaldi was a breath of fresh air

Fred Aczon

Capaldi is amazing. His crankiness and life lessons gets more relatable as I get older. He has at least 2 of the best Doctor defining speeches in the modern era. And his hair has the greatest character development of all the doctors combined.

Samuel West

Ooo i get the feeling your going to fall in love with 12 overtime

Kalinda

All I’ll say about 12’s attitude without spoiling anything is that it’s an arc. But trust me there will be that one moment where you’ll go “that’s it that’s the Doctor”. We’ll talk about that moment once you get there

aplatonicjacuzzi

He’s tough to love but this is the Doctor without having to put on the pretty face and charm. We’ve seen him like this in previous incarnations, albeit in small bursts, but he no longer feels like he needs to hide himself.

Questn

I don't recall fully but I don't think I liked Capaldi after series 8, but after his run he's my doctor and he always will be :)

Chris Padwick

Capaldi is at this point very Hartnell-ish. The first Doctor was, frankly, a miserable old bastard for a fair bit of his time. 12 is still suffering the PTSD from centuries of Trenzalore, so under the circumstances, I'd be curmudgeonly as well. But it's his softening with Clara's help that makes it worth the journey.

Cody Sinclair

I didn't immediately gel with Twelve at first, but his abrasiveness definitely felt intentional. I actually appreciate it looking back, it really sets him apart from the other modern Doctors and in some respects he feels a little more like a classic Doctor. His final season is one my absolute favourites, right up there with Eccleston's season.

Matt Crumpton

I loved the 12th doctor right off the bat. For me, he is my second favorite doctor behind 11. His journey is fascinating from where you are now, to his end. He can be a hard pill to swallow coming off of 9, 10, and 11. He does come off mean, cold, sarcastic, unlikable, but is that who he really is underneath? That's the question. Let him marinate. Just judging off your feelings from this episode, I think season 8 will be rough for you. It has a lot of ups and downs with his character. I think 12 really comes into his own during seasons 9 and 10.

Rare

Narratively speaking, I think Capaldi’s depiction is more interesting. By the end of Matt’s run I was getting a bit tired of the whimsy and upbeat nature of the doctor. Capaldi feels like a real mask off moment of a man that’s old, tired, and bordering on apathy. It’s not that he doesn’t care, it’s that it takes him more effort than when he was younger. Hes much more unfiltered and his tolerance for things is lower. I was pretty much hooked episode one with him and he’s my second favorite after Tenant.

Jbb

He still remembers the War Doctor. And the fact that on a planet Doctor means Warrior. Also, 10 and 11 were never really nice to soldiers either. They were just more polished.

Steven Whaley

I took to Capaldi straight away. Of all the modern Doctors he's the one who best captures the spirit of the original run of the show. His arrival feels like a slight course correction rather than anything very jarring. I mean no disrespect to Matt Smith in saying that, as his Doctor certainly has a lot of strengths too and I also enjoyed the vast majority of his run. Also, it's a pretty normal thing to struggle with whichever Doctor immediately follows ones favourite. :)

Jbb

I don't think it is a spoiler to day, the theme of this doctor is "why did i pick this face? what am i telling myself?" This is the Doctor we saw when 9 met a dalek. When 10 punished the Family of Blood. And this was the doctor when the Silence stole Amy.

Jeremy B

Just to echo what others have said, Twelve begins his journey after centuries of war defending Trenzalore. He's battle weary, no doubt suffering PTSD and has experienced so much loss in the town of Christmas during those many years. Also, he'd finally accepted his life was at an end at the top of the belltower when he was gifted, unexpectedly, a whole new regeneration cycle. So he has to figure out who he is all over again, as well as heal from the horrors of Trenzalore. Clara's role as a carer/healer will be so important in helping him grow into his new self and find himself once more. Trust us when we say, it may be a bumpy ride, but you will fall in love with him :)

Meredith Woods

12 is my favorite doctor, but I understand your reservations. Most people take a while to warm up to him, and his era got a lot of criticism at the time. However, I think you will appreciate his character arc. You mentioned that you never had to adjust to Christopher because he was your first doctor, and I think you have a point there because 9 and 12 are quite similar in some ways. While 9 was deeply traumatized by the Time War, 12 is deeply traumatized by his time on Trenzalore. I think it's easy to forget or even realize that 11 spent a whopping 900 years there, watching countless people die around him and fully thinking he would eventually die as well. Remember what River always says: the Doctor doesn't like endings. We barely see his time on Trenzalore in the Christmas special, but he spent nearly half his lifetime there. 11 regenerates, so we never see the impact of this experience on him; 12 is the incarnation who must shoulder it. 10 and 11 are only so fun and charming because Rose helped heal 9 after the Time War. With 12, we are sort of back to square one. I'm glad you're keeping an open mind, and I hope he will grow on you.

William Huebler

"those are attack eyebrows!" is extremely accurate.

Jake Beaumont

All I can say without spoiling is keep trucking on with this doctor, and trust that it is truly him underneath. This incarnation is one of the best journeys in all of doctor who I'm sure you'll love it. :) Btw Journey and Danny aren't related. The name thing is just a little link for the writing to bring Danny into the episode more but otherwise there's no connection.

William Huebler

as i said for me it took till about the 8th episode before it fully clicked what 12 is about. Knowing some of the far more difficult Classic doctors probably helped the transition for me too.

William Huebler

And it is a running theme in the series - 9 alone after the time war needed Rose to become more compassionate. the copy of 10 was similar willing to repeat the time war again. 11 gets away from amy and Rory for too long and gets much darker. Even the 1st season of the 1st doctor's era, he's willing to kill a guy to escape at one point in the first story, and Ian and Barbara call him out for his shit and over the course of the season he learns to be every bit as compassionate they are.

Michele Jean

I did not like Capaldi at first either. But his portrayal grows on you over time.

Bibbler

First time commenter here. I’m begging you to keep an open mind. None of these themes and attitudes are new, the character arcs are just bigger than one episode now. Tennant had an episode where he hated and wouldn’t trust soldiers, but the character arcs only lasted that episode. Capaldi’s arcs take longer. Personally the thing I love about Capaldi’s doctor is that he is a flawed, human like man. We watch him try to be better every episode. I LOVE Matt so much, (he is my favorite doctor), but some of his episodes boil down the writers setting up a rule and then having him break that rule later in the episode because he is all pure good and gets away with it. Peter they stopped doing that and made him obey by the rules of the world, which I personally find interesting. Shoot a dalek from the inside, you die. How does the doctor then work WITHIN those rules rather than pushing a button that changes them. With the attitude, it’s a shift, I get it. He’s went from a flirty man who cares to much to a man trying to primarily solve things who doesn’t care as much. I can’t go into it further without spoiling things, I just encourage you to think of him as a doctor more similar to early doctors than the last two. He’s not like the last two, but I promise he’s the doctor.

Josh Lammaslehto

Best hair arc - absolutely. Best Doctor hair goes to Paul. (Honorable mentions to Jon and Tom)

Charley Tucker

Capaldi’s Doctor asks “Am I a good man?” Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith didn’t ask the question, and didn’t need to, they knew the answer, and it was No. They all saw themselves as killers, monsters, war criminals, cowards. (Even if we the audience disagree.) Capaldi’s Doctor is on a journey of self discovery and is exhausted. Trenzalore was hundreds and hundreds of years of constant conflict. The darkness was always there, Tennant for instance imprisoned a family to eternal isolation and suffering. In my opinion Capaldi is trying to find his way to stop running from his past, his darkness and himself. The harshness we’re seeing is that confrontation.

Jay Loving

Having watched Doctor Who since 1982, I can say... It's possible to like the Doctor even when he's not particularly likeable

Cody Haltom

This is the proper take.

Nick G

Capaldi is my favorite Doctor..

MaxValPlatt

Strangely, during rewatch I fell like Capaldi's Doctor and Cumberbatch's Sherlock are pretty similar in their characterization - both have their favorite people (Clara and Watson) , both are self-appointed geniuses and have like zero ability to communicate within standard society being easily irritated and acerbic to everyone dans their favorite people. But in the end, I guess, Sherlock was constructed as a high-functioning autistic person. I suppose that probably some characterization was moved to the Doctor as well, because both of these shows were made by Moffat.

William Wood

I get why some would not have liked Capaldi at first, the new WHO era didn’t have a distant and abrasive Doctor up to this point, apart from in some flashes of irritation. Capaldi remind4d me of the classic Who Doctor. I hope he grows on you, there are some fantastic stories in his arc. But not everyone likes it. As others have mentioned this incarnation is much older than the others with the time on Trenzalore. He also appears to have had a wonky regeneration. Give it time.

Lucie G

Some of the best speech in Doctor Who are by 12... Give him a chance.

daviderl666

WHY are wasting your time watching this POS Doctor???

Russell Crockett

It took a bit for me to warm to Capaldi because Matt is my favorite Doctor, but I DID fall in love with Capaldi eventually and treasure his run.

A-D

So, I dropped the series after 8x1. I didn't feel Capaldi, I had been sick of Moffatt's show running. (To be fair, rewatching with you let me see what he really was doing with the whole Church, Silence will Fall, etcetera. One giant story told over 3 seasons, completely out of order. Once the dots finally connected, I enjoyed it much more) But yeah. I dropped. Clips on Youtube brought me back. I rewatched a bunch of Capaldi and...fell in love. It's a process and it's not spelled out very well, though your viewers have caught a lot of it. This Doctor was very changed from his years on Trenzalore, and it takes time to become the Empathic Doctor, as he's more known now.

EnPee

The Doctor isn’t a human and it can be easy for us to forget that. The negative mannerisms of the Doctor in this episode have all been present in part in both David and Matt’s eras but I think the negativity and sarcasm was too extreme in this episode. The key takeaway for me is that it feels like the Doctor has forgotten who he is which is why he is leaning even more heavily on Clara than he usually would.

Josef Schiltz

No plot spoilers. Here's a fun little fact about this portrayal so far. Being autistic myself, having Asperger's, I had noticed this, and this has also been picked up by many in the neurodivergent community, Peter's portrayal shows many signs and traits of being autistic. The Time Lord equivalent of having Asperger's. - Autism Spectrum Condition: Level One - What is the bridge of the condition to being neurotypical.

Josef Schiltz

Same as my own observation elsewhere in the comments. However, I would also say that this is true of Matt's Doctor, however his is of the more effusively social 'high-functioning' type.

Josef Schiltz

Tom referred to Jon as "A tall light bulb!"

James Christie

Plus he’s just spent 800ish years in a truth field on Trenzalore. That amount of time would make anyone a bit blunt emotionally

applepie231

I had the EXACT same reaction as you with the 12th Doctor. I actually stopped watching for awhile because I was so upset lol. But coming back later and watching Peter Capaldis full run? He is, by a fairly wide margin, my favorite Doctor. Even his dynamic with Clara becomes better than Matt Smith in my opinion. The Capaldi era has some of my favorite episodes in the entire franchise and THE best Doctor Who episode ever made. I am so excited to watch you completely flip your opinion the way I did lol.

9’s first true adventure was taking someone to watch their planet get destroyed and being insulted at the idea of their struggling with the concepts of that. 10 ruined the lives of every person he traveled with besides Wilf and I guess Mickey? 11 abandoned a child for 12 years. Every Doctor has had some growing pains. *That being said* you’re supposed to notice them. Some people in the comments are being a bit heartless or have rose colored glasses. The contrast is intentional. If it helps at all, picture 12 a bit like a tantruming tween, I think that portrays the vibes. He’s unsure of his purpose. He isn’t the last of the timelords, he doesn’t feel like a hero or a good man, his enemies keep killing everyone he tries to save, so he’s being a bit of a callous jerk to avoid feeling like crap again. He spent something like 800 years protecting a town and the bad guys kinda won anyway. He’s not really sure what to do. Of 12’s seasons, this is the one that I bounced off of the most originally. He needs to be a bit unlikable to make the storyline they have planned for him work, but that isn’t amazing for the show lol. I think he’s funny in these episodes, but he would be a nightmare to be around.

Twelve seems to relate to a lot of us on the spectrum. That scene where they are in the Dalek's innards in that pool of protein and The Doctor says that their friend is in the top layer if they want to say a few words. Blunt, dark, but true. The Doctor is not expending brain energy on emotionality when he is trying to sort out this Dalek and save as many lives as possible.

To me, who has watched DW since the 60s, Peter Capaldi is very much the Doctor, perhaps more so than 10 and 11. You will get there, and I think I can predict the moment when your heart will melt and you fall in love with this Doctor.

Agreed. With the Time Lords gifting him a whole new regeneration cycle the Doctor is essentially starting from scratch. And just like William Hartnell’s 1st Doctor, 12 is very crotchety and impatient with humans, and not fuzzy and warm. But even the 1st Doctor eased up over time. Also, take a moment to consider his actions at the start of this episode. He had gone to get coffee for Clara, but saw a distress signal to which he immediately responded to, materializing the Tardis around the only survivor on an exploding ship. If that’s not the actions of the Doctor I don’t know what is. He’s not being mean to her when she points her gun and threatens him - he’s coaching her into the right response. That is also very much the Doctor.

I also struggled with 12 at this point. He won me over at the end of Deep Breath but then lost me on this and other episodes. Because honestly, he’s lost himself at this point. But I promise you, he finds himself. I think he will win you over.
