Shanaeri Rynale

I really enjoyed Peter's fresh take on what is supposed to be a non human alien, complete with different values, focus and attitudes. Dr's 9,10 and 11 were written to draw in a certain demographic and if you recall the 50th special there is a plot thread about the guilt of the time war, driving 10 and 11's avoidance behaviour. 12 is taking those head on "am I a good man?" . At the time peter did face a lot of criticism for his initial portrayal which he refined later on. Dr #1 was also his favourite as a kid, so his early portrayal kinda mirrors that

Mrs O

Great reaction as always. This is a normal reaction to this doctor I did not like him to begin with but after a few episodes in I started to like the doctor more. I hope you will feel the same way eventually ❤️

Alkaris

It will get better.

Alix

I understand the initial negative reaction to the doctor--he's very different, he's very abrasive and rude, and very blunt. But at the same time, you really have to remember that Eleven spent almost a thousand years stuck on trenzalore fighting a war against ALL of his previous enemies. Not only is that going to give him new war trauma, but it's also going to remind him about his previous war trauma and make the PTSD worse. *That* is the situation that the doctor just regenerated from. He doesn't like soldiers because he doesn't like war, and he doesn't like himself for having been a soldier for so long on trenzalore. The doctor didn't just become like this for no reason, he didn't pull these grudges and feelings out of nowhere just because Moffat likes angst and Peter has aggressive eyebrows--he's become like this because his experiences pushed him to this point, just as they had for Christopher's doctor at the beginning of the series. The doctor is trying to figure out who he *is* again. He has to relearn himself and push his own boundaries to figure it out, and that can be super hard to watch and uncomfortable and can make him unlikable at times (especially on your first watch of his era) but again, if you can keep an open mind + hear what he's really saying and really going through instead of *how* he's delivering it, the actual emotion behind what he's saying and reasons why he's saying it become a lot clearer and more tolerable. He's not very nice to people (especially at first) and he can be cold and callous with his words+attitude, but if you look at his *actions* here, he: saved Journey, agreed to go inside a dalek and help it, saved as many lives as he could, and eventually tried to help a dalek become good despite his own biases. He also insulted people while he did it and didn't speak politely to anyone and was very obvious about his present dislike of soldiers, but he still spent the whole episode trying to *help* them, and I feel like that should count for something. (Also remember that we're at the beginning of an arc and that good character growth can happen when you start from a low point.) Anyway, this is definitely a hard episode, especially the first time through, so I really do get the instinctive emotional pushback against the doctor + his abrasiveness. I just think you really have to actively try and remember the context for his personality in the early days of his era. He just fought in a war for almost 1000 years. He's not going to be as fun and happy-seeming and easily charismatic and friendly as 10 and 11, and expecting him to be is setting him up for failure. Anyway, I still very much enjoyed the reaction, and hope you have an easier time with the next one!

Cen

Capaldi is my favourite doctor because he is just a 2000 year old man, tired grumpy and exhausted. But even in his grumpy state he still acts like the doctor

dean worrall

once he remembers why he picked that face you'll like him more.. he's still trying to find his new self..

Worms

Capaldi's Doctor was great this episode. 'I think you are probably a good person but at the end of the day, a soldier is a soldier' is a message that carries even more importance today than it did back then. Every time 10 or 11 would start at episode at odds with soldiers, they would usually end up befriending and believing in at least some of them. Making the Doctor stick to his beliefs and remain apathetic to soldiers made for a more interesting episode. I believe this should be how he treats soldiers considering the concept of a soldier goes against what he stands for. This message would've been clearer if they actually fleshed out the soldiers in a realistic way so it doesn't seem like he's just being an asshole out of the blue, but the side characters aren't that well written in this show in my opinion.

Luka Poser

Counterpoint to Twelve's age being less easy to flirt with: I find Capaldi VERY attractive ;)

Paul Mix

The jarring change in Twelve's personality is absolutely deliberate. Unlike almost every other Doctor, Twelve's character has an actual (and magnificent) character arc. This is the starting point, where he (the Doctor, not Capaldi) really does not yet know who he is. If you are willing to go on this journey with him, the reward of watching him discover the answer to that question will be so worth it.

Chris B.

I get that this version of the Doctor might not be for everyone, but I like that he's returning to the more alien version of himself from the classic series. "I'm not your boyfriend" was much an acknowledgement that the Doctor was shedding with this new regeneration cycle his streak of human-like vanity previously present in both 10 and 11, and returning to his more "true" personality. Twelve is still the Doctor, he cares deeply and will always try to help, but he's no longer as concerned with going about any "niceties" that humans habitually use in their daily lives, which can certainly come off as cold and grumpy, especially when combined with the Doctor's long history of antipathy towards soldier. Sure he's short with Journey to the point of sounding a bit like a jerk, but remember that her first reaction to his saving her life was not gratitude, nor just confusion, but instead was pointing a gun directly at him and making demands; these actions are almost a perfect microcosm of why the Doctor frequently dislikes soldiers so much.

Mimi

I came on here to say all of this, but you've said it all absolutely perfectly!!

mykah

Just think of the last episode he doesn’t know who he is, I think with that perspective, it made the transition a little easier.

Kevin (GiantFutures.com)

This is a very real reaction to this episode. I don’t want to say too much, but this reaction sets up the rest of this season as much as the episode did. I can’t wait!

Mimi

I second everything that Alix said, far more eloquently than I could ever have managed! Also, I know he's kind of hard to like at the minute, but it's all part of an arc, and whilst he may not be everyone's cup of tea, there's a reason why he's a lot of people's favourite doctor! Also, you know, 9 could also be pretty rude and mean at times, and even 11 could be ruthless and cold. They just managed to put more of a charming veneer over that than 12 is right now, but he's still the same doctor... He's just really struggling to find who he is at the minute!

Steven

Tbf, he also warms up too

Merlin’s Cat

This season can be hard at times but stick with it. It will be so worth it.

Sorcerer Rumburak

I totally get where you're coming from—I felt the same way when I first watched it. Stick with it, because as early as episode 8.1, the Doctor asked the crucial question: “Why that face?” Saying any more would be a spoiler. Oh! And let's see if you gonna like Missy. 😉

Steven

Ngl I love how much you're honest with how you're not enjoying Peter atm. Laughed out loud when you said it takes a moment to click and you hoped it was full throttle from this episode on. I'll just say that all the concerns you have are intentionally written and you're gonna enjoy the rollercoaster :)

Merlin’s Cat

The original idea comes from a movie from 1966 called the fantastic voyage

Ben

The Doctor's view on soldiers (or at least this doctor) is anything but discriminatory, as others have said in these comments, he has just spend 900 years being a soldier on Trenzalore plus god knows how long fighting in the Time War. This Doctor doesn't like soldiers simply because they remind him too much of himself, when Rusty saw hatred in the Doctor's soul, it wasn't just his hatred of the Daleks it was his own self hatred.

MaxValPlatt

Well, 10th was the one who regrets, 11th was the one who forgets. There is a reason that 12th is like that - he had a thousand years to remember everything that he had done in his life. And there is a thing with Doctor's regenerations - he usually does them randomly (other timelords could actually control their regeneration, just like in the Night of the Doctor where Doctor had a choice of his next incarnation and he chose to be the warrior). But, according to BTS of that minisode, Sisterhood gave him a placebo, it was his own choice to become the War Doctor. So, there is a theory that 10th and 11th were like that because he had just find his love to adventure with Earthlings again, and with most of them being young, he was going to be young again. And 11th Doctor lived for a very long time, so long, that he kinda outlived all his previous incarnations in his 1000 yeras on Trenzalore and 200 years between his visits to Lake Silencio with Ponds. So, he naturally. as others said, amass a huge amount of anger and trauma during his long 1000 years vigil on Trenzalore. Nad all this knowledge that was probably repressed and removed into subconsious by 11th, was unleashed on 12th new formed psyche, so, his callousness is a sort of defense mechanism. Don't worry, he will mellow eventually. As you said in the beginning, sometimes actors trying to act in their character and change bits that doesn't work well. This season is like that. P.S. At least, 12th didn't try to strangle his companion like one of his previous incarnations did right after regeneration. And that incarnation was also kinda rude and snarky, actually... There is definitely more of classical Doctors in Capaldi, I think. 10th and 11th had pretty smooth regenerations compared to post-regeneration psychosises of Classical era Doctors...

Igor McKay

You just still see the veil.

vaughn DeGeer

New achievement! You have just gone through what everyone that is a doctor who fan has gone through many times. Saying goodbye to one doctor and hello to another. A full, hearty and loving welcome into the depths of doctor who love.

Jamiee

tbh Moffat overdid the writing in the first 2 episodes of "grumpy old man", he does pivot pretty much from here on out, but it's just Moffat kinda shooting himself in the foot if you ask me

vaughn DeGeer

Trauma changes you, it takes time to heal even a little bit, but you are never the same person as before. This doctor needs time to find his way back from being lost. Missy is the mystery of this series . Patience. Simple patience.

Jeremy B

Absolutely this! I was going to make this point too, but you say it so, so well.

TGrimace

Harsh. Even during the other Doctor's darker times (usually because they didn't have a companion with them), you got mad at them, but you never accused them of not being the Doctor. And to be fair, every Doctor has had an episode or two about their complete hatred of Daleks, even when it seemed like there was a 'good' Dalek. Even Christopher got a lecture from Rose about how unreasonable he was being about the Dalek.

Jeremy B

Just to echo what others have said, Twelve begins his journey after centuries of war defending Trenzalore. He's battle weary, no doubt suffering PTSD and has experienced so much loss in the town of Christmas during those many years. Also, he'd finally accepted his life was at an end at the top of the belltower when he was gifted, unexpectedly, a whole new regeneration cycle. So he has to figure out who he is all over again, as well as heal from the horrors of Trenzalore. Clara's role as a carer/healer will be so important in helping him grow into his new self and find himself once more. Trust us when we say, it may be a bumpy ride, but you will fall in love with him :)

Daniel King

His heart does start to shine through later on, and by the end you miss him too.

Martin

Interesting how you're basically Clara from episode one lol Get how it takes a while to get used to the difference in character but this was very harsh, but I get it may take a while if you haven't seen Capaldi before, we had that chance at the time because we'd seen him star as a similar character elsewhere, but yeah seems like it may take a while for you to adjust to his style but when you do you can go back and see how cool this all this.

Jamiee

I also just read somewhere that the 11th doctor just spent the past 600 years inside a truth field, it makes sense that 12 is just ZERO filter haha

Rach

All I will say is that this is a perfectly reasonable reaction to this episode and I think as Moffatt intended. BUT also that Capaldi is also my all time favourite Doctor for reasons that I hope you will also discover over the course of his run! And you do see in this episode that while his initial surface personality appears rude and cold, his core values of helping people and learning are the same as ever. The first thing we see is him saving Journey's life after all!

John

I get your initial reaction to 12. I did not like him at first. We know the Doctor doesn't do well alone, and while he was around others on Trenzalore, he had no companion, no confidant to keep him grounded - for over 700 years. The Doctor is very much damaged right now and he absolutely NEEDS Clara. This season will be a journey. The regeneration was not a quick reset and a new face. The Doctor needs to heal, and he has a long way to go. Remember, even Matt's Doctor said, "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many." That was the Doctor when he was in control of his shadow. Peter's Doctor is lost in his shadow and we're hoping Clara can be the light to show him the way out.

Nathaniel Castle

The weird thing is I think Matt would have done everything Capaldi did, he just would have apologised and been nicer about it

James Fleischman

Capaldi is different but definitely the Doctor. But even having rewatched him several times and fully grasping his story he's not beating out 9, 10 or 11 for me.

Ejigantor

I immediately liked Capaldi, but your difficulty with the transition is completely understandable given your lack of familiarity wiht the classic series; My Doctor was, and still is, Sylvester McCoy, the seventh Doctor, and I see a fair amount of similarity with Capaldi's iteration, which made this something of a return to form rather than new and completely unfamiliar. I will say, The Doctor is questioning if he's a good man - this is an improvement, because 11 was certain he wasn't (at least up until he revisited The Moment) and never considered himself a good man. I think the most pertinent quote is from A Good Man Goes To War, "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many." I've no doubt Amy would call him a good man, but he himself wouldn't have considered it a question worth asking. Christopher's Doctor also had a fair bit of disdain for humans alongside his love of us, referring to people as "stupid apes" and the like, but with everything that happened surrounding his regeneration, it's not at all surprising his next incarnation was much closer with and nicer to humanity. I also think it's worth nothing that when the energy came through from Galifrey, 11 said "A whole new regeneration cycle" It only took until the end of The Christmas Invasion for 10 to find himself, "No second chances, that's the kind of man I am" and 11 knew who he was by the time The Eleventh Hour concluded, but at the start of a whole new regeneration cycle it makes sense it would take him longer to figure out who he is.

Nathan

Journey Blue and Danny Pink aren't related as far as we know. At the start of the episode, we here Journey call for her brother and she calls him 'Kai'. Hope this helps clear it up

Nicholas Sulikowski

And we've come to it at last! I always had a feeling that this Doctor would be hard to digest. Because he was hard for me to digest when I first saw him. And I'm someone that watched at least one story from each of the Classic Doctors as well watching all of nuWho. Revisiting this now....it's kind of marvelous. Because I remember not liking Twelve in this episode. But knowing how his character development will go, and how he'll become MUCH MUCH kinder and sweeter, I'm in a position to just kind of relax and enjoy these early days. And I do mean enjoy, because upon rewatch, Capaldi's Asshole Doctor is kind of hilarious, while also having a touch of the Doctor in it. I'm not worried about what kind of man he will be, I'm just having fun with his present snark! But don't worry, he does figure it out. Twelve does truly become kinder, sweeter, and all around, far more like the Doctor that we know. In fact, his final episode is one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes of all time. And so like the first episode of his run asked, be patient. And so like the TITLE of the first episode of his run asked, "DEEP BREATH". It's gonna be a hell of a journey, but it will be worth it in the end.

Jo Karelja

Peter Capaldi is the GOAT ❤️❤️…….just give him a minute to recover from his trauma on Trenzalore 😉

Carl Wilson

Some reassurance: I agree they really took the attempt to distinguish Peter from Matt way way too far in the first half of this season. It was an experiment, they wanted to do something very different, which is of course not Peter's fault. All I can say is that they correct and find a different balance, making the abruptness much more humorous and the kindness much clearer, but it takes time. You're going to need to be patient for awhile longer.

Tommy

Yep, Peter's Doctor just doesnt sugarcoat anything. He just gets the job done.

Tommy

Nah, Peter's arc is the best ever written from beginning to end. Long term storytelling done expertly.

Tommy

I liked Peter right away but mainly because I HATED Matt when he first became The Doctor after Tennant but he became my favourite soon after. After that, I vowed to never hate a new Doctor again out of the jump. Then Peter became incredible too.

DSJ.

Others here have mentioned that the Doctor has just spent 1,000-odd years fighting on Trenzalore, and you have mentioned the Time War thing, but I think that putting both of these things together explains this Doctor's character perfectly: In the last few episodes, he has revisited the Time War and the worst day of his life, which he barely remembered because of time streams being out of sync, and then he went to Trenzalore and fought a millenium-long war. He hasn't just fought the Time War in the distant past; he's literally just revisited it. And then, Trenzalore! No wonder this poor man is traumatised and anti-soldier. There's an element of self-hatred here; the soldier who hates himself for being a soldier. That's the point you've got to begin with with Capaldi: he's been reborn, in even more of an extreme way than Eccleston was, and he is, as Vastra says in Deep Breath, 'lost in the ruin of himself' - and it's our job to bring him back. This Doctor looks, and is, old, but he is also so, so young, and traumatised. And that's where we must begin in understanding him.

DSJ.

Also, it has to be said, Capaldi and Coleman have the most astonishing chemistry of any two actors, or Doctor and Companion, pairings in Doctor Who history. Which is a truth that shall be seen more of in due course. These two together…wow, just wow.

Ben “Bentendo” Dawson

While there is a narrative reason along the way for his 'shift' in personality, the same Doctor traits are in there... he never liked a gun [numerous examples], he never liked a soldier [won't accept a salute from anyone other than Kate], when he saw humanity being cruel he shouted at them [The Beast Below]... this is just the cycle of a Whovian struggling to get over the last Doctor and accepting a new version of the character. In time you'll feel it, we all did at the time. Is he a good man? We'll find out... Something I will say, that doesn't spoil anything, but will hopefully reassure you, is the 12th Doctor has become a symbol for the Trans community based on his overall character arc and they way people have interpreted it over his overall time as The Doctor. Something to bare in mind over the next few series.

Daniel French

It's a shame you're having a hard time with 12, but I do understand! I don't have to say much as many others in the comments have pointed out, but you have to remember what 11 went through on Trenzalore, plus this is the beginning of a new recreation cycle. I think you will find the next episode easier, it's a lighter mood. Still loved your reaction though! 🙂

Paulo

Ok this is going to be long and I’m going to try to get my thoughts in order. I think this is mirror episode where the doctor see himself and see his hatred and prejudice reflected back at him and ask himself and Clara if he is a good man but also it’s a mirror for the audience to see themselves and what do they think about the doctor, I think but I could be wrong. In the end I think what I learned it’s he has always been the doctor we are seeing his adventures, triumphs, defeats, happy and sad moments. I feel with this episode they were trying to convey the fact that the doctor see has aged and hopefully he won’t turn into a daleck, hateful and with only one purpose to exterminate or maybe I’m reading too much much into it. This is just my humble opinion.

Peter Powis

I know I really struggled with Peter originally, found him hard to get used to after Matt, whom I loved. But he grew on me and all of a sudden I realized how much I liked him and think he's one of the best Doctors ever. He's such a great actor. He will grow on you!

Paul Patine

Don't worry. You're not supposed to like him right now. Just wait. And it might be a bit.
