If this episode was written today, there’d probably be a corporation trying to buy the souls from the soul hunters to train their AIs on the data representing all those brilliant minds.

Sorcerer Rumburak

Well, here’s the big question: What exactly is a soul? It’s often used in a very vague, esoteric way. In the Greek “body/soul/spirit” model, the soul is just another word for the psyche. This raises the question of whether it is truly the seat of identity—the “I am.” Or can the one not be separated from the other at all? In the Old Testament of the Bible, it is written about Adam that he “became a living soul.” He became one—he wasn’t given one. As for the soul hunters, it could simply be that they made a copy of the soul—though that contradicts the final scene in the episode, when Delenn set the souls free. Anyway: An intriguing, philosophical topic.

Gallows Girl Amy

Great reaction as always. The story telling in this series is so multi-layered. It always amused me how many "closing scenes" you get in some episodes. This one was pretty light compared to others. The Soul Hunter is Mark Sheppard's dad btw. He had a brief cameo in Doctor Who (The Impossible Astronaut) as the older version of Mark's character.

One thing about Babylon 5 is unlike most shows they don't force characters to appear in episodes if they're not needed. I really wish more shows would do this instead of forcing unnecessary characters and take up time with appearances and contractual lines, etc, it definitely leaves the entire series able to tell a story the way it should be by focusing on what each episode needs to focus on.

Would love to talk more about Soul Hunters, but can't. So anyone that seen the show, check the spoilers page on Discord. :P Can share some facts about their ships. The single-pilot vessels are highly advanced, long-range transport craft utilized by the enigmatic, immortal order of Soul Hunters. Design: The interior acts as a "Whisper Gallery" housing multiple soul globes. Capabilities: Equipped with highly advanced artificial gravity, gravitic engines, adaptive stealth armor, and vaporizing energy weapons The ship was designed by Foundation Imaging founder Ron Thornton. It was one of the author's favorite designs for the show. The design of the ship was also featured on the cover of August 1993 issue of Computer Graphics World magazine.

dean worrall

in case you didn't catch it, the bad soul hunter was the guy who played the old Canton Everett Delaware III in the season 6 opener of Dr Who... The Minbari are big into re-incarnation.. it gets explained more / better as the show goes on..

Anyone battling to sync your copy - VLC playing at 0.96x synced perfectly on my old DvD copy

Bubba Fett

Sinclair is the claw game champion of the universe!!

MertzRocks

ANGELA! The Mertz is back! Like I never left (even tho I did - sorry I had to but...) I just saw the YT post for The Gathering and immediately jumped back into your Patreon pool, if you will. I've been waiting for you to react to this show and sensed you eventually would. Now to binge from the beginning to the now and I'm looking forward to every future Friday! I also *hope* at some point you will do 2 eps a week but that's your choice. Off I go to the Gathering! Be back here in 3-ish hours...

Minister Kosh

Fun fact: the prop for N'gratz (the insectoid who sold the soul hunter the security pass) is re-used in the 4th episode of Buffy the Vampire slayer in season 1 as a praying mantis.

Harry S

Good show, thanks Angela! You may want to rewatch the scene with Delenn talking with the Soul Hunter in the MedLab. It is short but important. Reincarnation is a big part of Mimbari beliefs. It is at 22:00 in the video.

Baulderstone

Yeah, this is something I really like a lot about Babylon 5. A lot of shows, Game of Thrones comes to mind, try and visit their entire sprawling cast every episode, and I find that means you don't really get a satisfying amount of time with anybody. And when one of your favorite characters disappears for a couple of episodes, it makes it all the better when the next episode centers on them.

MertzRocks

I keep hearing you speak your mind and in the midst of certain sentences I hear incomplete snippets of dialogue from the show itself, even though that dialogue might be seasons away. It's uncanny; but I think you're one of the very best creators BECAUSE you are a bit uncanny... I'm so glad to be back! 😍

MertzRocks

SPACE CRAPS! 😜 a roll of 2 is 'nuggets'; a roll of 12 is 'loafs'? 😖🤣

Baulderstone

On the chin thing with Ivanova's vote, I think she is speaking metaphorically. To say someone has no chin is to say they are weak.

John

That's always a good philosophical question. Most belief systems that hinge on reincarnation or some kind of life after death suggest the soul is separate from the body - it continues on after the body dies. But that doesn't tell us what "it" is. Is it a physical thing? Is it energy? Or is it just a specific sequence of information (modern tech analogy would be a computer program)?

MertzRocks

Yeah the Soul Hunter is Badger's dad (and/or Romo's dad) and Badger (and/or Romo) is Icheb's dad lol

Sorcerer Rumburak

Alongside matter and energy, information is a fundamental building block of our reality. This raises questions for me such as: If my “self” is the information about who I am, then what is the information carrier? Materialists would immediately say “the brain”—but is that really the case? Information is found everywhere—and I’m fascinated by such outlandish lines of thought as the idea that the “self” itself doesn’t necessarily have to be stored in spacetime.

John

Delenn's actress, Mira Furlan, was also in Arcane. She voiced Babette, the Madam of the brothel Vi took Cait to in Season 1. She passed away before Season 2, but they wanted to include her anyway, so Babette appears, but has no dialog.

punkrockpollyanna

and the vice prez with too many chins means he has the audacity to strong arm others (full of himself)

punkrockpollyanna

I'd site someone as an example or use a specific noun, but that would be spoiling.

Baulderstone

On the topic of closing scenes, while this show is one big story, I like that it still has strong individual episodes with a real structure to them. A lot of shows now are made for binging, which means all the episodes sort of run together.

Bubba Fett

Hahaha I mean I'd have crashed i to it first 🤣

Baulderstone

The usual selling point for B5 is its carefully-thought out setting and long-from plot, but I think you've already identified its other great feature: the characters. As good is the story is, what really brings me back to this show over and over is getting to spend time with the fascinating characters on this show. I liked your comment about the show being ahead of it's time and of its time. It did in feel relevant when it aired. It felt relevant again when I watched it again on DVD in 2004 in different ways. And there has been something that felt timely every time I have watched it since then. As for Sinclair going out to grapple the soul hunter's ship, I think it's fair to wonder why the commander is going out there. On the other hand, he is probably the best pilot on the station, as a squadron leader during the Earth-Minbari War, and coming from a long line of pilots. Considering how much he struggled to get it, if any other pilot had gone, they probably would have failed, forcing Ivanova to blow it to pieces. Although, in retrospect, blowing it up might not have been a bad thing.

Texas Anla'Shok

You're more generous about the special effects than I am. I watched this back in the 90s and even then I thought the graphics looked like cheap video game graphics. They do get better over time, in fact, you can kind of trace the CGI development over the course of the show. They were at times literally inventing technologies as they went.

bakamitai

Who went out to grapple the ship?

Texas Anla'Shok

As far as the space shots, this came out not long after we started to get images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Roy Graham

This is so good. You're asking all the right questions for this point in the series. Great sci fi should inspire you to ask questions; about yourself, about society, the nature of existence. You're in just the right head space. The show is paced out for old school TV seasons. You get time to live with these characters, understand their cultures and be a part of their stories. If you don't see one you want in one episode chances are you won't be waiting long for them. Hope you keep enjoying!

Roy Graham

Oh- You mentioned the graphics. When HBO re-released them in full resolution I was shocked at how well they held up without any updating. When I was a kid I remember thinking they looked pretty cheesy but have since learned that had a lot to do with how our old tube TVs scanned. Interlaced video didn't do this show justice. Way ahead of it's time even in the art department.

Tom Maynard

The ships were tumbling, so that ups the difficulty!

Alex von Hochtritt

EEE More B5 Woo! This show is about mysteries. Hold on to your questions. It's possible some will be answered. Do souls exist? Minbari (and Soul Hunters) believe it. Does that make the belief *factual*? They "made a wall of bodies" to protect their leader, Dukat, when he was dying during the Earth-Minbari War. So - they THINK the souls are real, and that drives their actions. Even the other Soul Hunters think this guy was crazy. Delenn smashed the globes to let the "souls" go - because that's her religion: the dying must be allowed to *die*, and what Soul Hunters do is an *abomination*. Letting them go is almost a religious duty. Oh - and the slow draining of her blood: an abrupt violent death is bad. A gentle "go to sleep, never wake" death is so much better.

Moricant

My older brother was a pilot in the RAF, and reached a fairly senior rank before he retired, which meant that he spent more of his time organising things on base than in the cockpit. He would jump at any opportunity that let him take an aircraft up, partly because he simply loved flying and partly because he knew there was an expiry date on his ability to play with the big toys.

Gwydify

Kosh simply saying "Yes" is completely in keeping with Vorlon communication and, if it makes you feel better, it also drives the characters crazy too :)

DoktorEvil

One of the things you'll notice in this show is its interesting perspective on religion and spirituality. J. Michael Straczynski said in online chats with fans way back when this show originally aired that he himself is an avowed atheist, but he had tremendous respect for people of faith and would never, ever mock their beliefs. And he really walked the talk with how he wrote the show- you'll meet some very spiritually inclined characters on this show, such as Delenn, and they will express their faith with great eloquence. You'll also meet some absolute rationalists who only believe in things they can empirically observe, and they will also express why they think the universe is so. The writing is absolutely fair to both sides. As a side note- I watched this show on its first run, when I was a kid way back in the nineties, and this was the first show that I can remember that actually had a fandom that organized itself online. JMS himself was already an internet old head, even back then- he'd been hanging out on places like Usenet and IRC since the eighties, in the pre-World Wide Web era, when the internet was an arcane place for nerds and academics. JMS would often conduct chats where fans could question him about all sorts of details and his thought process as a creator; this was totally a new and fascinating way to be a fan, in those days. Many of the things he posted on the boards are archived online, and they're pretty illuminating, but of course, you should stay away until you're finished with the show, as spoilers would be everywhere.

Hi James, could you give a brief run-down of how you set that up? My DVD player is a Panasonic, but I assume the steps will be similar between brands. Thank you in advance 🙂.

Marcus Hicks

I heard it as "Space Crabs".....and I was like "wuh?!?!" 🤪

Marcus Hicks

The good ones or the out-of-focus ones? 😉

Peter Powis

Prepare for a long burn with Babylon 5. Lots of little details given along the way all adding to the main story arc. So many littles clues in this episode which cannot presently be understood but will become apparent later on

Peter Powis

He was great also in a Star Trek Voyager episode

Peter Powis

ditto! had to join again for the epic Babylon 5!! can't wait to watch it through again!

Baulderstone

Comment corrected. Thanks, David.

vaughn DeGeer

The soul hunters have an unpleasant but vital function in the universe of Babylon 5

Over50Gamer

Um, those claw games are hard as f**k IMO... anyone that can get something on the third try is a GOAT, again IMO.

Thomas Schorsch

I'm pretty sure Ivanova was joking about Santiago and Clark. She's basically telling Sinclair that she's not really going to tell him why she's voting for Crane.

Tranquil_Gnome

The rogue Soul Hunter is William Sheppard, the father of Mark Sheppard - Badger on Firefly, the lawyer on Battlestar, Crowley on Supernatural. and so much more. Both played the same character on Dr Who as Canton Delaware.

Andrew Midkiff

This finally tipped me over to joining your Patreon. I figure with this, and then VM season 4, and later this year Mighty Nein season 2, I would just subscribe for a year. Greatly enjoying this.
