Grail is one of the 'less strong' episodes in season one, but still has a bit of red yard for you to play with. Still love Kosh's response - "Good". LOL Side notes: - TKO is one of the five lowest rated episodes in the entire series. (110 total) Don't feel bad for not loving that one, not a lot of us are fans of that one. - The Centauri were old school colonizers. Narn was a planet with resources they wanted. They moved in and enslaved the Narn people to strip the planet. Took 100 years for the Narn rebellion to finally force the Centauri to leave. The Narn hate the Centauri. The Centauri look down on and really don't like the Narn. Not like we've ever seen this dynamic before. SMH Fine, one more edit..... I'll give you some good news in that the rest of season one is a series of bangers. Good episodes and lots of story building (red yarn). You're going to have a blast.

This is one of my favorite episodes of B5, though I think I'm in a small minority on that. I understand why, there are a lot of ways that it's not top-tier, but David Warner does so much good work in getting you on board with a character who has made a very radical choice in his life. I also really like the use of Kosh's veil of mystery as something other people would try to take advantage of for their own purposes. Fun little side fact: Aldus was named for Goran Gajic, the husband of Mira Furlan (Delenn). He will later direct an episode of B5.

Such a fun episode, dropping some interesting lore, and awesome guest actor appearance ("now the numbers really do add up"). I'm looking forward to watching this with you.

No theory session today, but reminding us of how awesome Sinclair is more than made up for it. He's the GOAT, and more than that it was a very atypical type of sci-fi captain lead character that JMS developed for the series lead for the 1990s. Sinclair's portrayal was one of the (many) things that had me sold that B5 was something new and different and wonderful.

James Fleischman

RIP David Warner. If you haven't watched Hogfather please, please put that on your Xmas list. Also Wing Commander!

I want to know how the Ombudsman ruled on that abduction/probing case. My granddad claimed to have been abducted walking out of a bar so we may have a case too. He wasnt probed (or didnt think so) but his wallet was gone with a hundred dollars. Did I mention he drank?

While this episode is a bit flawed in its execution, I really like the general concept of the seeker with the humans focusing on his goal, dismissing it as silly, and the Minbari on the other hand not really caring about the goal but deeply valuing the dedication towards it. The story conveys the idea that it’s important to find something that gives your life direction and meaning while also pointing out that it’s a very individual choice that doesn’t have to matter to anyone else. The fact that actually finding the grail must seem unlikely to Aldous (and later Thomas) also stresses the “journey over destination” perspective, which is certainly appropriate for life as a whole.

Tim

One of my favourites too, and mostly because I just love David Warner to bits, such a wonderful and largely underappreciated actor.

Garrick Smalley

Gesundheit. I get the feeling I am going to be saying that a lot over the next couple of years, if you are allergic to secrets.

Garrick Smalley

I think the thing about finding the Grail and other items of power is only the people who are supposed to find them do.

James

David Warner is so fantastic in this episode, the quiet dignity he conveys so quickly is not something many people could do

Michael Detlefsen

don't know what possessed them to cast an actor with zero acting credits to play Jinxo. Especially against an award-winning actor such as David Warner. If I remember correctly, just before this episode was shot, the director Richard Compton was told he would not be directing any more episodes. He wasn't really motivated to get a good performance out of anyone. I've heard it said that David Warner stepped up and gave a lot of guidance to Tom Booker(Jinxo) during the shoot.

Geoff Richards

David Warner's one of those old British actors who started in the Royal Shakespeare Company in the '60s, and has been in all sorts of things. Like you said, Chancellor Gorkon in ST VII, but also the Federation ambassador in ST V, and as Dillinger/Sark in Tron.

Literaltruth

One of the most intersting things about this episode is that the tentacle prop they use will appear again in about 7 episodes timr in an ENTIRELY different context and with an extremely different purpose XD

Kamp

LOVE David Warner. The actor portraying Jinxo on the other hand.. Hope he has great success in other fields

Kind of another fillerish episode, not as much as TKO. Has some fun and bright moments and Ivanova’s boom bit at the end is always classic! From here on out for the season we get nothing but semi important to full on story shaking and moving episodes, can’t wait to see how you’ll react, there’s a lot in store!

You're allergic to secrets? Well... I hope you have an EpiPen near by as the series goes on. Jinxo...yeah...not the strongest acting job. However there was something charmingly sweet about him and the portrayal. The actor who played him comes from Improv Comedy, and of late has had a good run as one of the voice actors for Neon Genesis Evangelion. I got to see him at a convention a few years ago, and someone asked him about his experience there and if he was proud of how he did in the episode. His response was something along the lines of "I got to have scenes ...one on with... with DAVID WARNER. THE DAVID WARNER. I don't care if i was the worst actor on the planet. I GOT TO HAVE SCENES WITH DAVID WARNER." He also described Warner was one of the most gracious people he has ever had the privilege of working with. Tom said that it was clear that David knew he was working with a very beginning actor, and offered tips and hints that were offered in a very caring and thoughtful way. Tom also was called in a few times to talk about playing Vir when the pilot was being made.

Walker Smith pushing his way into the ring is intrusive. Another way to look at it is that the contest is for all aliens. In a way, the only place before B5 that they gathered for non-lethal competition. He did, while doing it mainly for personal reasons, further integrate humans into the larger galactic community with his beligerance. Centauri being 'small fries' is a bit inaccurate. The B5 council represents the largest empires in the galaxy at the time. Each major player has their own vote (humans, minbari, etc.). While all the smaller fries (the league of non-aligned worlds) share one vote. David Warner is a Trek powerhouse. He was also in Next Generation with a magnificent turn as a Cardassian interrogator. Not to worry. In time you'll dine well on the feast that is Garibaldi.

Matthew Vandiver

There are so many other things you should know David Warner for, he's amazing. Do your life a favor, get to know more of his work. Have you noticed the name Harlan Ellison(a very well-known writer) in the credits yet? He is in the opening credits as "conceptual consultant". In the last episode Susan was reading a book by Ellison, Working Without A Net, that was never actually published.

Mark Ten

Funny, they left my granddad hanging in too

Tranquil_Gnome

So many great guest stars. One of my favorite performances of David Warner. The episodes in Star Trek Nex Gen and Time Bandits are up there too. You may remember him in Titanic. I had no idea about the Dr Who connection which is a lot. This episode hits several on going questions about the show but answers none of them. Fantastic.

D Scott Howard

I enjoy this episode. Fun minor characters chewing up some scenery. Very much in the old TV western tradition.

Marcus Hicks

I don't know what is more rude-that Lennier just forgot that another entire Caste of Minbari exists....or that Delenn didn't bother to correct him.

Marcus Hicks

Yeah, I won't lie that I was *really* confused in that later episode you mentioned 😉

Bryan Mau

It's was definitely one of the Genius ideas of the show to mine under appreciated European actors. A great actor can really add to a show even in a single episode. A great actor has the experience and talent to pull off a wonderful portrayal and tends to draw out the talent in the people around them.

bakamitai

David Warner had such a comforting aura in this episode. RIP

James Davis-Mann

David Warner and Peter Jurasik where in Tron

Aron

Angela's double standard of being vehemently against anything even remotely pro-Earth and utterly in favor of aliens discriminating against humans is par for the course AWFL libtard thinking.

MertzRocks

Angela: Here's a *sort of* David Warner / Doctor Who connection: Patrick Troughton (TWO, played The Doctor from '67-'69) and David Warner are both in the religious horror movie THE OMEN and David has many scenes with the star Gregory Peck. Hallowe'en is less than two months away, and if you haven't seen it you really should.

John

This one episode a week is killing me! I'm so excited for you to see the story progression. I hate the wait.

John

It sounds like their working relationship on set very much mirrored his mentorship of Thomas on screen.

TricksterDaemon

Cool fact: Jerry Doyle, who played Garibaldi, and Andrea Thompson, who played Talia Winters, became a couple in real life.
