Early update, because this week's is a weird hybrid blog/Patreon thing. To start off, read the blog I just posted here:

https://the-last-sovereign.blogspot.com/2024/07/official-statement-on-collaborations_20.html

Patrons will be getting more insight into these projects over time, but not quite yet. First I was delaying because I was so focused on the final battle for TLS, now I'm delaying because my attention is split between the optional dungeon and all the added combat stuff. However, over the coming months there will definitely be time to highlight some of the new things I plan to work on.

Generally speaking, as I said in the blog, I will be shifting to a transition period where my attention is split between polishing up TLS properly and working on shorter games. I hope that this will provide a stronger foundation, let me experiment with new tech/design, and generally do all the preparation necessary for making future long term decisions. And hey, maybe the blog will invite something interesting.

Honestly, though? I don't expect to get much substantial. Even setting aside the stigma around NSFW games, the games industry in general does not really value writing or have normal career paths. If I wanted to be a big time games writer, I should probably have put all my time into becoming a journalist or Twitter personality instead of writing games.

But I have found an audience of people that enjoys my work, and that's an incredible thing. You can definitely count on more projects from me, and hopefully this transition period will give me all the perspective I need to chart the right path onward and upward!

Every Elder was once young. I'll risk sounding like a dreamer, but the fact still stands - at some point, every trend, fashion, genre and notion was invented and done for a first time ever. I still think that your approach to gaming is quite unique and if you'd change the engine to something more modern and do SFW games to have a broader audience and avoid stigma attached to NSFW stuff, by now you'd have a mid sized development company with several TLS-sized projects in devving. I am sure there are quite a few people in the world with enough brain cells to appreciate good writing and creative design. In fact, I think that quite a few of said people are positively starved for such a thing.

Runcible Technician

Quality is quality. Thanks for not being a useless twitter personality or terrible games journalist.

SantaTheHutt

The fact that the games industry doesn't appreciate good writing is, IMO, one of its biggest problems.

Mycroft

Maybe it's because I do not work on this field, I fail to see what kind of collaboration you seek. As I understand it, most of your game are mainly your work, with the collaboration of others person for the drawing, like Annikath for TLS. If the colaboration with her work, why not keep it for the next game ? Or are you looking for something different ?

Abso Haram

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for more OEA stories. Edit: And more dancing minigame, which I thought was cute.

AnythingAtAll

TLS is the kind of project that draws in a dedicated audience not simply for its quality, but just the sheer audacity. *Finishing* TLS properly, with absolute consistency and obvious passion, is the kind that earns an audience who sticks with you for as long as you're creating. I'm sure there'll be a dip once it's clear TLS is truly finished, but I don't doubt there will be a lot who'll stay. You can count me as one. And I wish you luck in your future projects!

sierralee

I can keep making the sort of work I have so far, yes, but if I want to create larger games or improve production values, I need additional reliable collaborators. The post is open-ended by nature because I don't know if there is anyone actually interested.

sierralee

I hope one day! OEA2 couldn't happen right away, but if I dip my toe into crowdfunding and it goes well, I would definitely consider trying to fund a sequel.

Mycroft

Could a SFW RPG like OEA be a starting point ? You could create a studio like stegosoft. I think that, sadely, many people will not play your game out of shame, because society consider porn as shamefull. For exemple, I cannot talk about your game at work, for obvious reason, but if you were creating a SFW OEA, I would definitely talk about it because the game you make are great as games, not just as porn game.

sierralee

If I have an idea I think is best as a SFW game, you could see a SFW game from me, yes.

Decarabia

I hope you find fruitful collaborations! I am now curious about those utterly bizarre offers XD Out of curiosity, since you are so skilled at worldbuilding and large stories, and will be transitioning into making smaller games, have you ever thought about creating a game franchise that spans multiple smaller-scale stories in the same universe? Potentially from very different periods of time. Well, in a sense one could argue that this is still kind of working with an epic story...

Long Tran

Best of luck and while I may have personal preferences in the type of RPG experience I am looking for, you write some damn fine worlds and characters. Been a fan for awhile and don't plan on changing that anytime soon. Plus, good NSFW games just don't get the love they deserve.

Rachnera

Like Mycroft, and maybe likewise because I'm not from that industry, a bit confused about what you're looking for exactly. Some parts seem to suggest you're open for writing gigs on other games, other that you're tasting the water to recruit people for Sierra Lee Studio. Maybe some examples of what's on your mind would be helpful?

sierralee

I could tell some funny stories, but I feel like I'd be mocking people. >_> Suffice it to say that I've been contacted by some people with strange ideas. While I've given a lot of thought to interwoven narratives, I largely haven't pursued them in any of my projects so far. Some authors prefer to set up a single setting as their playground and keep building there, but I'm drawn to new territory. The closest I have is potential other projects in the world of TLS or more OEA games.

sierralee

I am open to the former, but don't expect to get any offers, so I am also open to the latter. It is open-ended because I don't think I have any real leverage in this scenario and beggars can't be choosers, I just wanted to make clear that if anyone wanted to contact me, now is a good time.

Edward Culham

Actually one of the things that I would suggest is actually putting in a script that would allow you to change party members in the mist of battle. Maybe have it, that needs to happen after everyone else has taken a turn, so that change cancels if the person "dies". There have been many times where I have a specific party at the beginning of the battle to deal with many enemies, and remain alive, but cannot do great damage against the last one as the party members that are effective against that one are not in the battle. Also will give a reason when splitting the party to go over the 4 party members fighting besides putting you in there to get the exp.

sierralee

As fun as this would be, I think the ability to swap out party members would be a massive balance change, probably more than the game can bear.

Dark Art

Have you ever thought of trying to join a team that did Kenshi or something/someone of a similar scale? I dont have any contacts with those guys, but woundt hurt to have a look-see, right? Given the fact that their game, even in the state that it is, made quite a lot of waves in the industry, just imagine what would've happened if Kenshi had some of TLS-ish design approaches and world/lore building shenanigans. Sierra, I think due to the nature of your games, your "recognition level" is rather niche and if you are truly serious of joining forces with a solid, dependable team, you might have to do the first step. Just sayin'.

Rachnera

Apropos writing gigs, a long time ago, when an app by the name of Twitter existed and it was still possible to configure it to output a curated enough feed to have some idea of what was happening in the Ren'py community, it was not uncommon to see non English native creators looking to recruit someone more at ease with that ghoti language to handle the writing of their (SFW or NSFW) games. Not sure many of these projects ever saw the light of day in the end though. If that helps, I also remember – and thanks to the magic of old school forums still kicking to this day can even quote my source – Hanako explicitly stating she had a sub-brand dedicated to games she worked on but didn't write herself: https://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?p=444363#p444363

sierralee

It isn't that I expect teams to come to me, it's that I'm so confident that teams would reject me out of hand that I wouldn't make the attempt. This isn't solely a NSFW thing; mid-sized teams simply don't hire writers in my experience. Of course, my experience is limited and I could be missing examples, but from what I've seen of the history of such companies, the writer is always a founding member. I'm not trying to be humble when I say I think writers approaching such teams would be considered to be not bringing any hirable skills to the table. Posting on my blog is intentionally casting a smaller net, a small percentage chance versus zero chance. Now, writing gigs do exist, as Rachnera noted. There are some Discord servers where writer requests come up from time to time. For the most part, however, these are work-for-hire jobs where the main creator just wants someone to put their ideas together. I've come far enough that I would like to have a position where my ideas are valued. The Hanabira Games thing does seem to be in a different category, though, and I'm not familiar with how those connections were made. Maybe that's an exception I'm unaware of.

Dark Art

Yup, thats not gonna be easy, but do you really need to be "hired" by a team? Think about it, you have your own financial base, you can join a solid collab for credits, experience, exposure and future connections/opportunities and part of sales, cant you? And why do you think you'll get rejected outright? You are an accomplished writer, arent you? Granted, your books arent exactly my cup of tea (just being honest here), but you do have some success there and that ought to count for something, right? I am not going to harp on you, but I think you are thinking tactically, while the situation needs some mid-to-long term strategy. In other words, you cant earn that kind of power by doing delivery quests ;)

sierralee

That's an interesting limitation! If he's willing to share, such a script would probably be compatible.

Rachnera

> The Hanabira Games thing does seem to be in a different category, though, and I'm not familiar with how those connections were made. Maybe that's an exception I'm unaware of. IIRC the story was Georgina one day receiving an email with (the first draft of) the full script of the game, basically out of the blue. From how she told it, I got the feeling this isn't exactly how these things usually work. But I guess YOLOing things is sometimes the right call.

Mycroft

Have you considered bigger studio ? You're saying that small team don't recruit writter, but the same cannot be said for bigger studio, and given what you created, your resume is quite impressive.

Rhinedog1963

I don't know if you will eventually do custom maps for all locations, but what you're doing in Stineford looks amazing so far!
