It's time to vote! Video games. We love to play them, don't we? But what if playing video games was, in fact, totally overrated? What if watching video games is truly where it's at? This category isn't necessarily about your favorite game to play--heck, you might even hate playing the game that you end up voting for in this category. I want to know your favorite game to watch, regardless of your feelings about how it plays. Do you only watch games that you're playing? Are there games you'll never play but know you like to watch for one reason or another? Comment below with your vote!

Elden Ring - I like to watch people suffer.

Nathan Holden

Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis

Legion Vs Ninja

COD 2 Warzone DMZ. I die a lot in DMZ while playing solo. It's fun to see others die a lot in DMZ, even with a duo or trio.

Andrew Avrick

The Quarry. I watch playthroughs of a bunch of these types of games but have little interest in playing them

Handamonium

Tunic. Watching it over someone's shoulder and trying to offer cryptic hints once you've beaten it is a treat.

normal cool adult male

Dota 2. I stopped feeding my addiction sometime around 2018 (joined the Navy and didn't have much time for it anymore, a real blessing if you ask me). I will still watch every "The International" and even catch some qualifiers throughout the year. The deep mechanics and the pure skill behind it make it such an interesting thing to watch from the sidelines.

Brody Doss

Maybe this isn’t a good answer but I have to say speedrunning in general. Definitely not something I want to do personally but a favorite to watch in 2022. It didn’t really click with me why it was so interesting and impressive until I watched a lot of SGDQ last year.

Pat Baer

I've got no interest in playing horror games, but I had a lot of fun watching different streamers play The Quarry.

Jeremy Barrett

I don’t watch a lot of people playing games as I don’t have much time and try to use it for the stuff I want/need to get done. However, the one game that caught my attention this year for just watching was Neon White. There is truly a flow state in that game that, even without ever playing the game, is entrancing in a way a lot of games aren’t. The visuals are stark and easy to follow even when blazing through levels at the speed of light, so it almost acts like a bit of a laser light show when you see high-level play. Also, quick shout out to NES Tetris as I also fell down a YouTube rabbit hole of the Classic Tetris World Championships this year and got real into watching Tetris matches.

Michael Hash

The Quarry. I almost clicked on Movie Mode, and after playing it for a couple of hours, I wished I had done just that.

Ben Hewerdine

Geoguessr. I have the geography knowledge of a hermit, that being bad. But I really enjoyed watching people play Geoguessr this year and watching their thought process. And accidentally semi doxing myself in chat whenever I recognise a place.

Duncan Parker Newton-Gaines

right at the end of the year I get way into watching some folks stream Minecraft on an SMP that was themed after The Purge. Everyone spends a week or two crafting and playing nice, then they have an hour where anything goes and just fuckin' wreck shop on each other.

Joseph Tavano

Watching no-damage runs of platformer games will always feel really good to watch.

Josh Smith

I love to watch warzone. Especially kill race tournaments.

Tom Ma

I caught Abby's stream of Pentiment and I enjoy watching it more than playing it.. I'm not saying it sucks but with a game that's narrative driven, watching it feels better

Andy Claiborn

Cyberpunk when Patrick played. It’s helped me understand why I hated that fucking game

Jordan Hass

I can't handle survival horror games, so I leave it to others to play for me, but this year, I REALLY enjoyed seeing people play THE QUARRY for it's decision making and clever cut scenes

Bardock

Neon White for me.

Adam Marsh

I would definitely watch more of the Mortuary’s Assitant. Wouldn’t play it though. Always enjoyed Phasmaphobia streams too.

Chris Mate

Retro games or perhaps a better label is nostalgia gaming. This can really work in two ways, either games that I am personally nostalgic for which would really be the snes into ps1 era. It also though encompasses games the streamer is nostalgic for. It's really about more than just the quality of the game, but the games being a time machine back to a different time and place.

Jason Green

Elden Ring (or the souls games in general) for me. I think I would get frustrated and put it down after a point then never return. I’d rather watch someone play them

coribald

gonna have to go with the hottest new release... Super Mario World. Kaizo Mario runs are such a good time.

AJ

Survival horror games in general, the Silent Hill series more specifically.

R. Ballien

Dead by Daylight for me. There's so much variety in each patch in terms of killer, map, what perks everyone brought, and how the other players and the streamer themself behave that it seldom gets old. I can also learn a lot for when I play if I pay close attention - yet I know enough about the general flow of the game that I can have the stream as background when I'm doing work or other computer work yet don't want to get too bored.

Chase Blisard

Dwarf Fortress. A game I will never play

Limowreck

I'd definitely agree with those that say Elden Ring. Played through it and loved it like I have all the souls games (except Sekiro), but I just love watching crazy speeruns and challenge runs and crazy stuff I'd never have the patience to do myself, but I love watching people play them doing that stuff. Also oddly I'm recently fascinated with Dwarf Fortress, too much for me to get into but watching someone do a tutorial-style play through has been pretty interesting.

Noah Olson

Dead by Daylight. it was a game i had no interest in at all until i saw WayneRadioTV stream it and then i got really into it

Colton Royle

Anything military and tactical and sweaty. I think it's a fetish.

Anthony Riddell

Higher level modern Tetris, mostly Tetr.io - I've spent some time over the last year or so learning the intricacies of modern Tetris has been fun, but watching them executed at insane speeds is rad as hell.

christian ates

Elden Ring blind play throughs. It’s pretty neat to watch how different people make decisions in that game. It’s also pretty entertaining to watch people explore and discover.

SatelliteOfLove

Crusader Kings III, but that may change in the future

Tyler S

Cuck Simulator 2023

Jason Loss

Speedruns and old games, and speedruns of old games are all I really watch. I've beaten most of these so I'm not getting spoiled on anything, and watching great skill at something I'd never bother to be that skilled at is fascinating.

u!sel

Mario Party

Matthew Wilson

This year for me was probably elden ring to see peoples builds

Zain Abba

I love watching MiSter streams. I probably won’t play most of those old Atari, MSX or other 80s platform stuff but I love watching Jeff play them.

AJ

probably too general, but also going to say speedruns, GDQ continued to be great in 2022

Ian Zamojc

Hearthstone. Played it for a week 8 years ago then threw money at streamers to play it for me after that. Rumbleverse I've enjoyed watching; I'd probably like playing too but haven't clicked install.

Patreon I guess

Can I put a negative vote in for Hearthstone please

Craig Parker

I've been really enjoying Pokemon Scarlet/Violet competitive ladder matches on twitch. The tactical complexity can get really high on Master Ball rank, and the new tera form types add a lot of surprise tactical adjustments and opponent reads to succeed.

Andrew Fish Booth

I am not a fan of Soluslike at all, but I love the lore Ive heard of in games like Elden Ring and Bloodborne, so will watch those in the background while working while I stay far, far away from playing them

Nick M

Only game I consistently watched this year was Battle Dome but some are calling it the most dangerous game

Josh Harper

The Quarry and dark picture games have been some of the most fun I've had watching games this year

Odyssydical

Ready or not or perhaps Tarkov. I know I will never have the patience for either but love the idea.

h3llb3nt

I watched a lot of Mario maker 2 streams for some reason. That and old boomer-shooter playthroughs by civvie11 on the YouTubes

Joe

Noita

POWERYELL

I watched so much dome keeper I bought a copy.

Phantasiu

I still like watching battle royale games way more than I would playing them. Seeing people run around in Rumbleverse was fun. Also all the Street Fighter 6 streams when the network tests are running, though I did end up playing the second one of those (even though I typically don't pay much attention to fighting games).

Jake Boet

Hitman 3 speed runs

A1steaksa

I consistently go back to those Mario Party streams Giant Bomb did back in the day. I think those games generate some of the best reactions from people I know and play with in person that it adds some authenticity to the watching experience. I'm not a huge streamer or let's play watcher so in terms of consuming watched video game content it's mostly news and that.

Carac

Tarkov. Love to watch and perplexed when I play.

Matt Esslin

Fortnite is the top for me. As a 38yo, happily married, father of a toddler having games to play is a rarity. Fortnite, it's just so wacky. Warzone 2 is a close second. The flipping 20something pros are just unreal to watch.

Aggro

I love watching the Mister streams. I especially love watching old arcade games or console games I may have missed.

Joe Lees

I don't watch people stream really. I loved some of the old GB shows like Exquisite Corps and Murder Island. That was the last time I watched on the regular.

Greg Petrie

The Quarry. Though watching Jeff play Mario Party was also quite something.

Kyle Rudy

I watch a lot of newLegacy so whatever the current WWE game is, 2k22 I think. They have a knack for making those awful games watchable.

Ryan Loring

Street Fighter 6 beta, honestly just as much fun to watch as play, this game is gonna be huge at tournaments

Adalaar plays

Mister streams for me and street fighter 6 even though I hate fighting games

PastaPirate

This year I have both loved playing and watching Neon White

Joseph

Streams of the 32 bit era. (PS1, 3DO, Saturn, Jaguar.. technically 32-bit.) throw Dreamcast in there too.

nahcq

Hitman 3

bakayoyo

I love watching dwarf fortress

Ycros

Escape from Tarkov. I keep watching it, even though I've never played it. I feel like the complexity is kind of overwhelming, and the technical issues also push me away from actually buying it, but watching skilled players never seems to get old.

Rolf Schwarz

Zelda A Link to the Past Randomizer. There is a German streamer playing a Rando almost every day and I watched every single one :-)

Anders Widebrant

I tend to watch streams more for the person than for the game. I have enjoyed some Minecraft streams, perhaps because of how that game lets people express themselves.

Phil Holmes

Randomizers, but if I have to pick one, it's Dragon Warrior.

David Winter

I don't really play them myself because I haven't got the patience, but I do quite enjoy watching battle royales (except fortnite, cartoonish crap), simply because anything can happen.

BEEFCAKE

If watching games includes adaptations, I nominate Arcane. That show obliterated my expectations.

FameDouglas

Warzone/DMZ Since I have no chance in hell of ever getting nearly as good as any of my opponents I prefer to watch someone like Jeff shoot people in the face. It's fast-paced and action-packed and there's never a dull moment.

R. Ballien

Regardless of the individual games' strengths and weaknesses, they make for reliable entertainment every year by seeing how your favorite streamers choose to play through them.

Johannes Edholm

Retro games, doesn’t matter which one.

Red

Rust

Alex S

The only streaming I like to watch is evo

Captain Ginyu

I love watching catalog-run streams and videos of retro titles. Folks like Retro Pals and Jeremy Parish’s Video Works and Neo-Alec’s NEO•GEO GENERATION are all great picks, imo. I dunno if those count as streams, but they are a great watch even if I’m unlikely to play every NEO•GEO game back-to-back in release order.

Strangereal

So a bit of a qualifier here: My favorite games to watch streamed are FFIV/Link to the Past randomizer races. I can't play them. I get mad when I can't figure them out fast enough. Something about playing them works my very rawest nerve about progression. They great to have on while playing something else or studying though. I don't feel like that really fits the spirit of this category though. In that it's not the same game at that point, but so heavily modded that it becomes another entity. The Skyrim Amendment to our voting process, if you will. Where does the original end and the new begin? So I would put forth Deadly Premonition, specifically the SuperGreatFriend "let's play" of it. I have an almost infinite amount of patience for bullshit from games that are ambitious but rubbish. SaGa Frontier is one of my favorite series, despite most of the games being actually kind of crap, for example. I cannot stomach actually playing Deadly Premonition. The controls are horrible, it does not respect the player's time with absurd amounts of busy work and the gameplay is awkward at best. Yet I have watched that game played through beginning to end at least 10 times. Part of it is SGF's presentation and love for the game. Part is the game itself, shown in it's most dolled-up form with the worst parts chopped out during video editing. Man is it a journey though. One that typing this has made me want to go through again.

Kuno Woudt

The Quarry -- I love playing a chapter of these types of games, and then watching e.g. Nextlander play the same chapter and see how things play out if some choices are different.

Ryan Heise

I’m not happy about this, but I idly watched a lot of dorks play ArmA while working this year.

CamGearz

I'm gonna sound bias, but Mister/retro streams. There's plenty of media and YouTube coverage of current games, but when I want to relax and find out new things about games I missed out before my time or just how wacky development was back then, I come to the Jeff Gerstmann show (available on Patreon and other fine websites) for that kind of content.

Shweep

I liked watching Gotham Knights, people comaplaining about the story or generally having a 7/10 time. It's not so terrible that it's uninteresting, and it's not so good that I would want to play it. Gives the streamer to talk about random stuff and batman lore ain't a bad ice breaker.

Jorge S

Agreeing with Cam here. I didn't have much exposure to that stuff when I was a child. When I see Jeff streaming some Mstr/Retro I get stoked. Those streams have also inspired me to look back and discover stuffed I missed.

Adam W Hamilton

I have become a big fan of watching the Sims. I don't play the Sims, don't want to play the Sims, but I like watching others build and play the Sims.

drunken_irishman

Watching Smight's Arcade Pits is always a good time... Or watching Smight himself damage shuffle through every Mario and Battletoads game.

Rene Tetrault

Breakout 13 or FMV's in general are hella fun to watch. Although COD is always a good time as well.

Mike Notridge

Pokémon S/V, more than happy to sit and watch as my wife plays/give battle tips as they happen but man am I passed actually playing those games myself. Millions of systems, it’s exhausting.

Nate Lechner

Neon White. I think a lot of it is the music and the style but also it occasionally became hypnotic watching people try again and again to beat a time. The instant restart feature was also huge.

Mason W

I would have to say Grounded as I am not a fan of co-op games, but seeing what Obsidian can add to a survival game in terms of story is interesting.

David A Cameron

Escape from Tarkov. Zero interest in playing ever, but a good thing to watch.

R. Ballien

He's my own gold standard when it comes to LPing, and the exhaustive showcase of DP he did is one of his best.

kinto

Soul Games and weirdly ship reviews for Star Citizen.

Mr. Bop

The Quary

Glen Greer

The Quarry. I watched at least two separate play through a this year. I also appreciate the clever title!

Andy Robichaud

My vote is for truly skilled gamers (like a Lobos) streaming Elden Ring, and seeing the limits of magic, armor, weapons, Ash of Wars, and summons along with the synergy of a highly skilled player mastering a combat style tailored perfectly within a certain build. I don't think any of the Souls games have that great of a combat design from a physics and or input standpoint. Often times there is a little input lag and outlandish AOE from foes that cheapen the experience. But what separates these games from others is the RPG depth therein. Elden Ring has a lot of ways to lessen the difficulty in combat, but it requires a thorough understanding of the systems under the hood. Watching someone master the depth without having to complete what feels like a graduate course of game design yourself is nice! I put in 180 hours into Elden Ring. I beat the game. It was great, but I really enjoy those that put in the 2000 hours and stream it for my enjoyment. Nice job, now I can spend time with my family.

Chanel Bell

Elden Ring and honestly Calisto Protocol. I spent nearly the entire year obsessed with ER. Whenever i wasnt playing it, i watched tutorials and lore videos and playthroughs. I cant remember the last game to absolutely consume my life like ER. Oh Calisto, for me and my girlfriend it rose to the level of so bad it's good. We were staying up late at night, just laughing at how fucked up the combat was and how the camera didnt allow players to see what's going on behind them. It's the perfect dumpster fire to get baked and laugh at.

Mike from Santa Cruz

Okay I’ll be the old-ass gamer who says StarCraft 2 then. At this point it’s a niche game, the people who still stream it are real good, and it’s a known quantity that’s nice for background and engaging. Runner up for me last year was the Street Fighter 6 beta, this year is gonna be cool.

Mike Maloney

PUBG. Just perfect 2nd monitor while I'm working game to watch for me.

David P

I loved watching people play the Quarry this year

David Redekop

Neon White takes this for me in 2022. It's incredible to play and somehow equally as exciting to watch skilled players absolutely blaze through levels in a fraction of the time that you had ever thought possible. It definitely inspired me to go back into the game and try to beat my personal best times.

Luis D. Rivera

There's this game called xRC Simulator that is a 1to1 recreation of the past so many years of FIRST robotics games. It's very cool and everyone should check what high school kids can come up when these days

David Johnson

Elden Ring. Watching Patrick Klepek wrap that up was some damn good streaming. Same with the few streams Vinny did. Don't know why it's so much fun to watch people bash their head against those tougher bosses.

Dixavd

Pac-Man World Re-Pac - your video playing it is one of my favourites of 2022 but I would hate to touch it myself.

Konrad Kuzmin

itch.io horror games For me this category is filled not with one game, but many. I watch a smaller streamer play mostly itch.io games and I have such a good time doing it. Most the games are absolute trash but they often play horror games (up my alley) and the streamer has very good production skills. They keep me entertained while playing games even I wouldn't want to play. My vote goes to shitty itch.io horror games! ~~Konrad Kuzmin

Gary3k

Speenruns - ANY! I watch speed runs all the time, particularly of bad games!

.jpg

Pitfall II: Lost Caverns

Bobby Downey

Live watching COD: DMZ streams. Because I don’t have the time to really dig into it.

Windir2112

A good chunk of my time this year was spent watching Valorant. Not annoying dude bro Valorant streamers, but rather the esports scene. They had so many compelling tournaments this year that was a blast to watch.
