Finally! It's time to talk about that A.S.S.. That's right, in a year filled with Auto-Shooting Survival games, it's bound to be hard to pick just one. But that, dear friends, is exactly what I'm calling upon you to do at this time.

Like all categories, this is open to mobile games, too, which I just want to say so that people don't forget about some of the games that saw big updates over there, like Survivor.io. Of course, Vampire Survivors saw a lot of updates in 2022, as well, and there are numerous others that are certainly worthy of your attention. Honestly, I don't like mentioning game names in these as I don't want to poison the well, but since this is a relatively new genre designation it's probably worth it for me to establish some basic guidelines.

As a reminder, dual-stick shooters where you, the player, control the actual rate of fire are _not_ A.S.S. games. Those are just dual-joystick shooters. Robotron-likes. Smash TV-esques. Geometry Wars clones. That sort of thing. Remember the old slogan that I definitely didn't just make up: If You Flick The Right Stick To Make Them Die, That Game Does Not Qualify.

Vampire Survivors It is the only ASS I played. It's like one step up from a clicker. Very cool.

Legion Vs Ninja

Vampire Survivors - I resisted trying it because it just sounded dumb as hell. And it is, it is dumb as hell. But it's a good kind of dumb.

Mason

Vampire Survivors

caseman

It's Vampire Survivors. Easily. Brilliant game.

Vampire Survivors

Josh Harper

Vampire Survivors is the only one I've played, but it is excellent

Ryan Heise

I love A.S.S. best this should be “Vampire Survivors presents Best A.S.S.”

Craig Parker

Bummer I didn't try many others out but Vampire Survivors is awesome and has such a satisfying game loop, so gotta stick with the first and best.

Alex S

Vampire Survivors on iPhone is the only one I played

Joseph Tavano

Does Vampire Survivors have a replay feature? If so, you better back that A.S.S. up.

Jason Loss

It's easily Vampire Survivors. I have however, played a lot of soulstone survivors and while it's not that one, it's alright!

Alex De La Cruz

Can it be anything other than Vampire Survivors? I don’t think so.

drunken_irishman

I've played Vampire Survivors on both Xbox and mobile so, I guess that's the winner.

CamGearz

Vampire Survivors takes this. So much depth, discovery and joy. Plus it's easily accessible, my wife plays it o mobile and we compare notes and builds. Also the pace that everyone discovers things differently is just so awesome and refreshing, not just to talk about, but watch.

Kyle Rudy

Played a bunch none beat the elephant in the room, Vampire Survivors. Even if it didn't originate the genre, it defined it for all that came after.

Ryan Machan

Vampire Survivors is the only A.S.S. I need in my life.

Jorge S

Vampire Survivors is where I have gone all year for some A.S.S.

Greg Petrie

Vampire Survivors. Which would probably win even if I'd tried some of the others.

Benjamin Liddle

Gotta go survivor.io for hooking me. VampSurv has been my go-to recently, but didnt really hook me on my first go-around.

Alexander Sargeant

Gotta ba Vampire Survivors. There are good alternatives, but nothing matches the mad adventure of that game from EA to now

Kacho

Vampire Survivors. I’m sure this will be a more interesting category next year!

Tots

Shout Out to Soulstone Survivors!

PastaPirate

Vampire Survivors is the clear winner here, but I'd like to give a shout to Brotato for providing a more challenging and granular take on the genre that I really enjoyed.

Cheyenne

Gotta be Vampire Survivors

ArbitraryWater

Going to be a contrarian and say, hm. Holocure?

First Warden

Vampire Survivors. That's it.

Matthew Hoerig

Sometimes you don’t need to overthink it. Vampire Survivors in a walk.

Adam W Hamilton

Vampire survivors all the way, 20 minutes til midnight is second. But a very distant second.

Niels Walta

Holocure would be getting my vote too. Given the rigorous nomination restrictions, the game would still qualify as you do not control the rate of fire but the developers did patch in the option of controlling its direction. Ultimately, the game has the benefit of passionate devs and being able to build upon what lessons they can glean from their big name counterparts, like Vampire Survivors. I feel that this makes for a much smoother experience and enjoyable game overall, in both controls and gameplay. On the other hand, given the slow development speed and the scope of its theming (having to keep to specific VTubers), Holocure just doesn't have the breadth and depth yet of its older more popular A.S.S. brothers and sisters. Nevertheless, for the price of free and how robust and enjoyable it is, definitely worth a shout-out in my opinion! Also, it plays freaking great on the Steam Deck.

R. Ballien

Yeah, there's no real point even in pretending this is a category, except to try to give games like Vampire Survivors a genre name I'm not sure is needed, since there's Vampire Survivors and Everything Else. (And why would you play Everything Else when you can just play Vampire Survivors again?)

Anders Widebrant

Yeah it's VS. Here's my app store review for the iOS version: Vampire Survivors folds down four fingers in the face of casino gaming by giving you all the endorphins you need with none of the predation.

Dan Park Plays

Vampire Survivors really gave us this category to think about. We could talk about holocure a bit as it expands on the concept with some MOBA additions like ults and such, but it doesn’t throw you for the emotional loops that VS does. Most clones exist without realizing why they exist. The actual predecessor here subverts expectations CONSTANTLY, even to the point where it’s annoying. Because of those subversions, I’m still playing VS to this day.

Rene Tetrault

Going to have to go with Vampire Survivors on this one.

AJ

Vampire Survivors, I guess.

Mike Notridge

Vampire Survivors by default, though that doesn’t take anything away from it in my eyes.

Sean

Vampire Survivor is a perfect game

nahcq

Vampire Survivors no question

Wen Tien

i picked up vampire survivors during holiday break and it gave me all the slot machine dopamine i couldn't put it down until i've completed all the unlocks, then i felt zero desire of playing it, going from 0 to 100 and back down to 0. as it is the only one i've played, it is my ASS of the year, but also i really don't see any reason to try any other clone.

Brody Doss

The award for best Vampire Survivors goes to…

Rayme C Vinson

Vampire Survivors was my favorite vampiresurvivorslike this year.

DaddyWarbucks

I'll be surprised if anyone votes for anything besides vampire survivors tbh

humantree

Vampire Survivors No comment

Adam Hardiman

Vampire Survivors, which reminds me, I need to finish grabbing all the unlocks in the DLC.

John Overment

Gonna say Spellbook Demonslayers if only for the sake of some discussion (it's really VS though)

Rhett Woody

Vampire Survivors To be fair, the only other A.S.S. I played was Survivor!.io, but Vampire Survivors is comfortably better in my opinion.

Joseph

Don’t play much in the ASS genre, but Vampire Survivors had enough going on to keep me playing. Wonder if you can turn PSO into ASS and maintain the hub world with shops.

Jon Goodman

I'm not sure it's been mentioned yet, but this "Vampire Survivors" had some buzz last year.

h3llb3nt

The 350 hours I have in it says it’s vampire survivors.

Rakete

Vampire Survivors is the game I played the most on the SteamDeck

dane clark

I mean, technically this has to go Vampire Survivors. It was the one with the biggest impact and inspired every A.S.S clone on Steam. That having been said, I own almost 30 A.S.S games and it's not the one I have played the most. Here is my top-5: 1. Rogue Genesia - This game breaks down the run into smaller, 2 minute chunks, or levels. It has a gorgeous visual style that reminds me of Octopath Traveller. The upgrade mechanic's are almost as deep as a Disgaea title so you almost always have something else to work towards. And the game has more enemies thrown on screen than any other A.S.S. out there, my last run had me killing almost 2 million enemies. 2. Spirit Hunters: Infinite Horde - This game has grown on me. At first I thought it was too slow but the developers listened and have sped up the main characters movement. It has an upgrade system that is reminiscent of FFX's sphere grid and plenty of options to make the game

SatelliteOfLove

Vampire Survivors it was post-SF2/DOOM up in this bitch this year and like back when, none touched the codifier

Phantasiu

I didn't play any of the games other than Vampire Survivors, so that.

I like to think this is a joke category, however I don't know any other games that are suitable other than VS, so I can't even be IN on the joke.VS....then

autumn sevier

Vampire Survivors was my Goty so its just a shoe in for this one we all know n talked about how great it is by now so i'll just give a honorable mention to 'Rogue: Genesia' it takes a similar gameplay style and tweaks in just enough to be different. instead of 1 big map its segmented similar to a FTL or slay the spire. instead of just moving the left stick theres a dash button also , and while there is an opertunity to aim with right stick it still self fires as it should for this catogory. they're still updating it but so far i've sunk 70.6 hours into it vs the 97+ i sunk into VS, other games in the genre like brotato i've just refunded cause it didn't click so needless to say they've done something right even if i don't like it As much as VS

kinto

Vampire Survivors. Project Lazarus is a nice change, but the pace & balance is not as good as VS.

FameDouglas

Ass of the year is Vampire Survivors. I started out playing it and didn't really understand what was going on and why I was doing what I was doing. Fast forward 5 hours later and I was still playing it.

Glen Greer

Vampire Survivors. I played it on Steam Deck and Game Pass. It was my GOTY!

Randy

VS is my favorite and most played game but just to mix things up I would take Army of Ruin. I think the UI is a big improvement and there's a special you build up and control during gameplay that's a good addition. It kind of "looks like a mobile game," but it's lots of fun. Brotato is also real good and there's a ton of experimenting with builds when you start a round that's fun. Also a very good name.

Andy Robichaud

Vampire Survivors. Should have made more GOY lists. In a weird way, I think it'll prove to me ahead of its time in terms of taking an older game style and ramping it up to the nth degree.

Tabasco

Vampire Survivors, hands down

David Doel

This might be more competitive in the future but clearly Vampire Survivors takes this. Fantastic game.

Mike from Santa Cruz

I have Boneraiser Minions and Tiny Rogues on my wishlist but to be completely honest, I’m still obsessed with Vampire Survivors so I haven’t tried them yet. I plan too, though? They came highly recommended!

Captain Ginyu

Vampire Survivors was a tough A.S.S. to beat in 2022!

Alex S

I also tried the Xbox version. Even better!

Limowreck

Yes, obviously Vampire Survivors, but honorable mention to Bounty Of One, which is still in early access but is really good so far and continuing to get better all the time. It's got a kind of undead cowboy theme, you can almost imagine it to be kind of like Gunsmoke or something.

Mike Maloney

Vampire Survivors with a bullet. Will throw in Gunlockd as an honorable mention though.

Mason W

Vampire survivors not only is it the best A.S.S game, but it is also the game I played the most in 2022.

David P

I was all about Brotato and still am. Vampire Survivors is great, but Brotato has been where it's at for me. I can't not beat every character on the hardest difficulty. I must, it's a true addiction. The challenges they craft are too well balanced in difficulty for the game to feel mindless.

Galeforce

Another shoutout for Soulstone survivors

David Villanueva

Vampire Survivors is my GOTY, so that one for sure.

Sabas

Holocure

coribald

20 Minutes Till Dawn is the one that totally grabbed me.

David Johnson

Vampire Survivors. Sure it wasn't the originator, but the state the game is in now is crazy for a $5 Purchase

gulpirak

Vampire Survivor, without a doubt.

Konrad Kuzmin

Vampire Survivors I mean, this has to be Vampire Survivors right? I put a ton of time into it and the just kept updating it non-stop. I had to uninstall the game for a few months so I wouldn't skip other games I wanted to play. It wasn't until my Steam Deck came in that I finally reinstalled it and boy, that Vampire Survivors eh? Shoutout to Soulstone Survivors. It's in early access and doesn't have too much content but what is there is great and the "fill the screen up with crazy effects of you obliterating everything" is top notch. I can't wait to see what they do with it! ~~Konrad Kuzmin

RiseFM

Vampire Survivors

Gary3k

VS - Vampire survivors. I 100% cleared it on PC, downloaded it on phone, 100% cleared it there, and then got it on my steam deck, and 100% cleared it there too. I am considering wiping my file and starting over again...

AJ

Vampire Survivors, easily

Jordan Jones

Do I need to write Vampire Survivors again? I am excited to see everything else that rises up in this category. Best part about GOTY!

Windir2112

I’m going to be totally honest, I hate Vampire Survivors and this genre as a whole. I don’t find this style of game engaging at all, and as a roguelite fan all this genre did was ensure that all you see are 100 generic clones of VS anytime you try to search for new roguelites on Steam. I will forever hate VS for that. If I had to vote for one it would be 20 Minutes till Dawn. At least that gameplay is semi engaging.

Khetix

Vampire Survivors.

Steve Francis

Vampire Surviviors, and Gunlocked is pretty cool too...
