Wow, what a packed conversation this week! 1. BIG CONGRATS to Dave on achieving his goal! I like to think I helped a bit—over in my little corner of the internet—to get Dave over the top. 2. The discussion of Chen family dynamics and the matter of deciphering or translating in-laws’ messages was both resonant and hilarious. (My partner’s large close-knit family were refugees from Vietnam who settled in California, and I’m a wasp-ish Virginia boy transplanted to Boston, of Irish and Welsh background…you can imagine how much I relate to Joy’s challenges of “decoding the Chens”.) Also: my partner is a full-speed-ahead kinda guy once he’s into a project, so like Dave I know when to just get out the way. 3. My dear niece is a young actress in L. There seems to be an issue with the podcast feed and specifically I think pocket casts. If you’re experiencing a problem, can you DM me with the following info: 1) which podcast app you’re using, 2) your rss feed in the “my membership” section? Most of the time the feed is fine and the issue seems to be with the app itself.

Fascinated and confused by Joy’s reaction to the TikTok ban. Especially for someone who uses IG (a much worse experience for video, live, and being sold to and manipulated) and who believes in community and organization. Yes, Imani has other platforms but it was TikTok that made her “famous” and provided her with monetary ability to continue. The TikTok shop, while annoying, helped millions out of poverty and gave them the first monetary cushion in their lives. We may all move to other platforms, but the same positive voices will not be rewarded because those other platforms are built for negative parameters that reward conflict. Look at Meta’s latest update! TikTok changed me fundamentally as a person because it connected me with people who taught me more about myself and the world than I could have imagined. None of the other social media offerings have done that. Because they weren’t built to do that. The other ones are the wholly extractive offerings. TikTok, while extracting, yes, at least gave us some crumbs. It nearly wholly replaced traditional entertainment media for me! It helped me give my kids a great Christmas. It gives back, maybe also as a tool of manipulation, but I’d rather get something in return (and I got a lot, personally) than the nothing that Meta/X/etc provide.

Possible unpopular opinion - I like the Decoding Everything frequency as it is. I recently unsubscribed from a paid newsletter because it was coming out too frequently for me to keep up and causing me overwhelm. I’ll also qualify this statement by saying I’m a triple Chen subscriber so I’m normally in favor of more of everything.

Hi Dave. Big congrats on reaching your goals! You’ve always been my favorite podcaster since I followed you in 2014. Even though news and politics isn’t the main focus of what you do with Joy, your weekly politics/news segment is just the right amount I need and your guys’ analysis are always top notch. Once again, screw CNN, NYT, all of corporate media. Never listening to them ever again. I tuned out of all political podcasts as well including Pod Save America. Anyway, keep up the great work! Looking forward to you, Joy’s and David Cho’s thoughts through this year. P.S I am living in Thailand indefinitely right now. If you and Joy ever want to visit, we have an empty condo in the heart of the city that you guys can stay in.

Congrats Dave on 10K! And Joy on being a general contractor;) One thing to consider China does not allow X or FB in China. No US controlled social platforms exist. So….. not sure I don’t agree with the point about TikTok as a potential vector for them to use in the US. But I do agree it’s not about data privacy.

Dave, I had to smile listening to you lament the tragedy of tiktok being banned in the US. I vividly remember you saying sarcastically to Davindra and Geoff on an old Slashfilmcast episode "mark my words, one day there will be tiktok stars..."

Dave, all respect as a Chenthusiast, but it sounds like the crux of your TikTok argument is “this ban is bad because I like the app.” You fully acknowledged that the app is owned by a foreign government that has the capability to spoon feed disinformation to and extract data information from people in the US. I am completely unconvinced that TikTok is a free and fair platform for information that would otherwise not be available to people who need it. There are numerous other *private* platforms owned by billionaires & future billionaires that creators/influencers can migrate to. I am also completely unconvinced that capitalizing into the ever dwindling attention span of the American people is good at all for innovation, security, or *mental health* of this country. Please please PLEASE have this much energy for public goods & rights that the Trump administration is absolutely going to go after - like net neutrality which no one seems to be talking about. Again - if you think outside of “I like TikTok therefore TikTok is good”, can you really admit that it’s a net positive for society?

I get the grief you have over losing TikTok, Dave. But whatever the reasons for a ban, I have a hard time believing TikTok is a NET good. The impact of TikTok (and IG, snap, etc) on the mental health of youth in America is something we’ll be feeling for decades. I found the new FX/Hulu documentary series “Social Studies” to be absolutely horrifying. I know there’s good in every social media platform, but… yikes. I found myself feeling incredibly grateful that my generation narrowly avoided having this stuff permeate our middle school and high school experiences. At around 37:45 Dave says “one of the challenges that Joanna had early on in our relationship …” At first I thought you mean JoRob, but some of the context suggests you may have been referring to Joy. Idk if you misspoke or I misheard, but also occurred to me you might’ve slipped & used Joy’s real name…? I know you’re protective of that info so just fyi in case you wanna scrub that or something
