This feels SO EARLY but this is when we start thinking about it. We are gearing up to film the Watercolour Advent Calendar 2024 and we need your help!

Each year I ask my Patrons for their favourite images of Christmas to turn into the 24 festive tutorials to paint in the calendar throughout December. I would love to hear from you once again and I would particularly like to hear about international traditions as well as the more familiar (to me) UK/USA traditions.

**COMMENT BELOW WITH YOUR SUGGESTIONS!**

Please comment below with suggestions of what you would like to see painted and then all will be revealed day by day from the 1st December.

As soon as we launch the 2024 calendar design, the digital download of the Advent calendar will be posted on Patreon free for all of you!

We will be selling the calendars and kits in my online shops soon. If this all feels extremely early, you're right, it is! But we have to make sure that people receive their calendars and kits in time for the 1st December.

We have a song about kangaroos at the front of Santa’s sleigh instead of reindeer (‘six white boomers’ it is called)

Stew Hall

Another option is the Christmas Beetle (sadly their numbers seem to be declining). They should up around Christmas time and have this brilliant copper and metallic exoskeleton. For Australians it is a sure sign Christmas is here (well… for my generation at least)

Sally

I love all of the mini paintings you’ve done! It’s a fabulous project! I love the traditional wreaths, candles and baubles, I hope they get included again, they’re always part of Christmas!

Katherine

A Yule log. It's a popular Christmas cake here in Canada 😊

Liz Kirkindoll

What about something to do with music? Christmas would be so different without the carols and hymns! Also, I’d love to include all parts of the nativity. Did you decide on a perpetual calendar? I hope so!😃

Poinsettias, orange pomander nestled in greenery, star, angel, hot chocolate with candy cane, stack of gifts, string of Christmas lights… can’t wait to see calendar. This will be first time. : )

spice54

Santa Claus, winter farm scene with house and trees lit up with Christmas lights

Leah

I can't wait!!! Jigsaw puzzles, cookies and milk for Santa, carrots for the reindeer, snowshoeing, secret Santa, Christmas baking, Christmas bird count (this is a new one for me this year! It runs from mid December to mid January)

Mary Moury

I love that you still include things like the nativity. I would love to have one or two again this year. Our family collects Christmas picture books. I'd love to see that somehow

Jana

Crumble with a santa hat? ;)Any animals with santa hats (cats, owls, mice, hedgehog, capybara, etc); not sure on licensing, but how about some movie/book theme ideas? Grinch, Scrooge, Rudolph, etc. Lefse is popular where I'm at, so a lefse grill and spatula? Krumkake pan (has beautiful Scandinavian designs in it). Christmas on the beach?

Tammy Fowler

I live in South Carolina. Maybe a palm tree with lights and a star.

Erin Berlin

I know we have done a Schwibbogen from Germany(Day 3 last year) and I'd love to do a Weihnachts Pyramide, too. Ohhh... and a Christmas Story Leg Lamp! (One of my favorite Christmas movies!)

Stacy

nativity or three wise men

Susan Ing

I love the nativity scenes and things like baubles and wreaths. I wondered about a pōhutukawa (New Zealand Christmas tree)? Or Jólakötturinn, the Icelandic Christmas cat?

Silvia Delena

Christmas decorations on a piano with Christmas sheet music or just Christmas sheet music, simple manger scene on top of a hearth.

Silvia Delena

I’d love the Christmas Story leg lamp!

Could we fit in an illuminated manuscript letter as on a mediaeval manuscript or would this be better as a general YouTube tutorial please? How about a stained glass window. Thank you!

Cheryl Gibbs

I've got a few for you, Harriette! 1) Close-up of old fashioned Bubble Christmas Lights on a tree (these were popular in the US in the '50s and '60s. 2) Brown paper wrapped package for mailing stamped "Fragile" (presumably with homemade Christmas cookies inside) with a a few half-eaten cookies/crumbs laying next to it. 3) An old-fashioned TV (NO flat screen here!) with the opening title "White Christmas" on the screen. 4) Christmas carolers on a snowy night holding candles and serenading a home. 5) Feet with fuzzy Christmas slippers on an ottoman in front of a roaring fire.

-Mexican tin star Christmas tree (illuminated) - -Talavera ornaments -kids making snow angels - felted embroidered ornaments

Teresa Collard

How about a German Steinback Wooden Moose Ornament. I collect Steinbach and he the moose I own is one of my favorites. It would also be nice given it coincides with your trip to some of thecU.S' Natonal Parks in the West this years. Also, many people decorate with moose items at Christmas in the US. Just a thought.

Teresa Collard

Stew, That is neat idea. I just watched a little video of the song. It is cute. My best friend is a French speaking Cajun There is a Cajun Night Begore Christmas Story that has alligators pulling Santa's skiff. Lol. (Harriet, the gators are not a suggestion. Lol)

Liz Kirkindoll

YES!!! I would love to do an illuminated letter!

Susan Bricker

I'm so excited about this! 1) Snowglobes 2) Ice skates 3) Gingerbread people 4) Christmas Trees

Sharon Dobbs

I love Susans list and would like to add popcorn garland or even a construction paper chain garland that the kids make every year also

Anne-Marie Serpaud

Hello, maybe box of chocolates, Yule log (traditional cake in France), basket of fruit

Erin Berlin

Me too! I have a full size one we put in the front window on our 2nd floor. You can see it so we'll as you drive into the neighborhood <3

Stew Hall

Omg! Can the gators be a suggestion please!!!!! 😁

Carolyn Stiver

Christmas lights. Lanterns or electric.

grace

simple stable scene, nativity

Leah

The Talavera ornaments would be beautiful!

Jayne

Hi Harriet, I am in Bermuda and like Tammy suggested a palm tree with xmas lights seems fitting as we are always on the beach on Xmas day! We do have a lovely bird that features often in our local Christmas cards because if it's festive colour, the Red Cardinal, might make a change from little Robins? We have a traditional xmas food too but it's maybe too simple to paint as it kind of looks like Sponge cake, its called. cassava pie. Hope that helps!

Rachel Clark

1) I love lefse and made it every holiday with my Norwegian grandpa. 2) I really want to hear from our Aussie and Kiwi friends about their summer Christmas on the beach and how they celebrate! Grilling out on the beach in Santa hats or something?!

Rachel Clark

One of those ceramic Christmas trees with the little lights you pop into the holes that everyone seemed to have in the 70s/80s. A Victorian Santa dressed in whatever finery was thought for Father Christmas. Or other depictions of “Santa”—Sinter Klauss from the Netherlands (I think?), Pere Noel from France , or Jul Tomten from Sweden riding his pig. Shoes for St. Nicholas Day! Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree. A punch bowl of mulled cider or wine and the mulling spices. Mittened hands holding a snowball or getting ready to throw it. A tiny street scene of shops at Christmas or maybe just a decorated store window.

Jennifer Van Den Driessche

I was wondering if anyone would ask for a Pyramide! A mug of gluhwein would be awesome too

Erin Berlin

Ooh! Popcorn garland around the top of the calendar like the ribbons. <3

Hi Harriet I’d love to paint a Christmas Turkey. Thank you :)

de Winton Paper co.

I can’t believe how many new things there are to learn about every year!

Nicola Archbold

I was thinking along the lines of a roast turkey for Xmas dinner perhaps?

Erin Berlin

Harriet - what would be the best way to print on watercolor paper and not have it bleed ?

Liz Kirkindoll

I’m from South Louisiana! 😂 We see enough of them!!!

Janet O'Connor

This looks like a lot of fun! I want to try to complete it with you🩷

Alice Mannion

Penguins, Mrs Claus, mince pies, a Christmas train, might be “too much” but Catalonia has a Christmas log with an unusual way of delivering presents.

Debra Cimino

Harriet, I was thinking maybe a nutcracker? I don’t think that has been mentioned yet. Lots of great ideas so far!

Christina Noel

Bûche de Noël - the Christmas Eve dessert or a Tourtières pie - celebrating Xmas eve dinner. Traditional French Canadian Christmas Eve foods

Kathy Weyer

How about a church stained glass window?

Genevieve

By tourtière you mean meat pie ( I'm French Canadian too). 😘

Genevieve

When I download an image to paint, I usually go to a specialist in frames, paintings and printing ( not Snappy Snaps) and I bring my watercolour paper and USB key with the file to print on it.

Genevieve

I know last year you really pushed hard to get the best of us. As it's a pretty busy month for everyone...I was thinking that maybe some days could be just a little bit easier than others! 🤣😘

Erin Berlin

Thanks! I think what I need to know is should we br using a laser printer or? And I'm wondering what Harriet uses for the advent calendar that doesn't bleed when it gets wet.

Are you familiar with the Moravian Love Feast images of the coffee, bun and candle with the red crepe paper tied around it?

Amanda Higgins

I'm new here, so not sure if this has been done in the past, but I always love a sweet Christmas pudding, complete with brandy sauce and holly.

Cheryl P

Here's another one: St. Lucia saffron "S" shaped buns/Lussekater (we make these for Dec. 13th, the Swedish Day of Light when the young girls wear a crown of candles --- battery operated --- and serve with coffee)
