Hi everyone, welcome along to this week's watercolour challenge. I'm so excited about this one as we are going to have a look at shadow painting! It is also the last stage in this particular house painting exercise.

Hello to our new Patrons! If this is your first watercolour challenge then I recommend going back through the previous challenges to get yourself up to speed and see how this all works. If you are here for house painting then start at challenge 9. All the while you can access all the tutorials on my youtube channel if you would like to go through some watercolour for beginners basics or brush up on other skills.

This challenge is the final flourish to your country cottage painting!

This is a private youtube link which only you Sweet Pea and Cherry Blossom patrons have access to.

You will need

A range of brushes.

Colours of your choosing: I used french ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Prussian Blue, Sap Green.

Watercolour paper (cold pressed is my go-to).

jar of water

kitchen roll to blot the brush.

A pencil

After watching the video...(if you can watch it on a screen larger than a phone that will improve the viewing experience as there is quite a bit of pencil drawing at the start)

Before we add shadow to our cottage paintings we're going to go through the basics of mixing and finding the perfect shadow colour for your subject matter.  Then we look at applying shadow to different shapes and surfaces. Here is a link to the mixing tutorial on my YouTube channel if you would like a bit of extra help in mixing colours.

Have a go at drawing a few varied shapes and applying  shadow to them.

Once you feel ready to work on your house painting, follow the steps in the video, beginning with your faintest shadow mix on the pieces in the background. I decided to have a source of light from above, as if it was lunchtime. Once you get to the house, start at the top with the chimney and work your way down. We use shadow to complete the garden path too! By the end you should have your very own completed house painting! Pat yourself on the back, this is a big achievement!

I can't wait to see the results! Use #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco. And please do have a look at everyone else's interpretations of the brief (search the hashtag and you will see all the patreon insta posts from everyone in here) and celebrate each other's work. We learn from seeing how others interpret a single brief so a community encourages progres

Comment below with your findings, and if you are sharing your work on Instagram, use the #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco.

Have a wonderful week.

Thank you Harriet, I'm way behind as, being a novice, I've started from the beginning. Superb tutorials, I am learning so much. Very very pleased with my cottage ,never thought I'd ever paint whole picture. 🥰

What a great series of tutorials on so many different aspects of painting buildings and plants. Thanks, Harriet.
