Hi everyone, welcome along to this week's watercolour challenge. Today we have a simple exercise today exploring a few ways in which we can achieve some simple water textures by reflecting a tree into a lake.

Hello to our new Patrons! If this is your first watercolour challenge then I recommend going back through the previous challenges to get yourself up to speed and see how this all works. We have a whole section on tree painting in particular watercolour challenge 5 for a simple small scale tree tutorial will come in handy today.

All the while you can access all the tutorials on my youtube channel if you would like to go through some watercolour for beginners basics or brush up on other skills.

This is a private youtube link which only you Sweet Pea and Cherry Blossom patrons have access to.

You will need

A range of brushes.

Colours I used: French Ultramarine, Cadmium Orange, Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, Mars Black, Green Gold, Cobalt Blue, Prussian Blue, Transparent Turquoise.

Watercolour paper (cold pressed is my go-to).

jar of water

kitchen roll to blot the brush

pencil and ruler

After watching the video...(if you can watch it on a screen larger than a phone that will improve the viewing experience as there is quite a bit of pencil drawing at the start)

Having watched it all through once, paint along with the tutorial. And it's as simple as that this week! Keep practising these little exercises until you are happy with your results.

I am looking forward to see how you get on! Use #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco. And please do have a look at everyone else's interpretations of the brief (search the hashtag and you will see all the patreon insta posts from everyone in here) and celebrate each other's work. We learn from seeing how others interpret a single brief so a community encourages progress.

Comment below with your findings, and if you are sharing your work on Instagram, use the #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco.

to continue - the large brush also seemed the best to paint the poppy and the seed head, but not the details or the black dots. I'm not sure what to do now. I've taken pictures but have never used Instagram. I'll try to paint my perfect poppy and then onto the next challenge. Thanks Harriet.

Fantastic! Yes we're just slowly building up these skills which you will all be able to add to your own owkr as well as the bigger projects we take on here!

Hi Harriet, I like it to paint the two first trees, but it is not easy. By doing again and again, I hope it will be nice. Last one, suppose to be more difficult. Is it possible to tell the size of your paper, I think you are always using A5 format, but may be I mistakenly. Thank you for everything you show us, is really interesting.

THIS IS SO DIFFICULT!!!! and frustrating... I try and I try but I don't like the results... Maybe I should take a break and skip a day because I feel like I'm stuck right now... I'll have a closer look on the tutorial and hopefully it will work out later...

Always good to give yourself a little break from it when it stops being enjoyable.
