Happy Tuesday everybody, I'm very excited to start the next building illustration, this time we are looking at townhouses!

A very warm welcome to our new Patrons! If this is your first watercolour challenge then I  recommend going back through the previous challenges to get yourself up to speed and see how this all works. All the while you can access all the tutorials on my youtube channel if you would like to go through some watercolour for beginners basics or brush up on other skills.

This is a private youtube link which only you sweet pea and cherry blossom patrons have access to.

You will need

Watercolour paper (cold pressed is my go-to)

Putty Rubber

Pencil and Set square (a rule is pretty good but it's really useful to have a right angle for this)

After watching the video...(if you can watch it on a screen larger than a phone that will improve the viewing experience as there is quite a bit of pencil drawing at the start)

Draw a pencil townhouse (revisit watercolour challenge 10 and 11 if you are unsure of how to start). Each week we are going to focus on a different part of the house, this week is just getting the basic pencil details.

The house dimensions I chose were: house width 8cm, height (including roof 15cm

I have attached a few reference photos for inspiration, but please feel free to research this style and find some architectural details you would like to add in the coming weeks.

Although this is a work in progress I would still encourage sharing your work. Use #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco. And please do have a look at everyone else's interpretations of the brief (search the hashtag and you will see all the patreon insta posts from everyone in here) and celebrate each other's work. We learn from seeing how others interpret a single brief so a community encourages progres

Comment below with your findings, and if you are sharing your work on Instagram, use the #dwpcchallenge and tag me @dewintonpaperco.

Have a wonderful week.

Harriet, I am really struggling to see your pencil marks, I understand the need for it to be feint, however for a new learner, it is difficult to get things in the right perspective and place. I have watched on the big telly box, enlarged on my laptop but am making such a hash of it. Can you post measurements of where the windows in the roof should be. I am so tempted to give up and move to something less stressful! (and I am sure I am not the only one to find this difficult, are you able to do a first sketch in bolder pencil drawing please! :) )

Ah Sally, I'm sorry you're struggling to see the pencil marks. This is a fairly old video and we have endeavoured since to make the pencil a bit more seeable for more recent videos.

Perseverance is paying off...I have a drawing to be proud of!! Thank you so much Harriet! 😍
