Welcome along to our first watercolour challenge all about flower painting.

Hello to all my new Patrons! This is an ideal place to start if you're keen to learn more about painting flowers in watercolour.

A lot of our flower painting tutorials are going to be about putting flowers in arrangements, vases, bouquets etc so it's extremely important that you can paint a flower from all angles, not just straight on. I am aware there is a range of experience amongst you so following the filmed demonstration, I offer you a choice of flower to use for your painting practise. I have linked below to a number of suitable flower painting tutorials from my youtube channel if you would like a bit of help.

This is a private youtube link which only you sweet pea and cherry blossom patrons have access to.

You will need

some watercolour paper

A range of paintbrushes

Paint

Jar of water

Kitchen roll to blot the brush

Eraser, pencil and ruler

After watching the video...

try the basic exercise as demonstrated in the video

then choose a 'petal flower' and have a go at the exercise again. Here are links to some of my 'petal flower' tutorials on youtube:

Introduction to easy watercolour flowers

Buttercup

Daisy

Icelandic Poppy

Daffodil

Hellebore

Primrose

This is extremely helpful! I'm going to skip the house painting for now until I get better and concentrate on these. I did one of the other flower paintings and it didn't turn out too badly. I am hoping that the arrangements will help me know how to connect my leaves better.

fantastic, so glad this was helpful. It seems extremely simple but it'a something a lot of people have trouble with.

Maria Cromer

I tried the daisy, wasn't too awful! lol I will try again. I'm having trouble with the petals that are 3/4 turned. I will keep practicing. I'm very excited to get to start a challenge. Thank you.

Pam Dratnol

I've been working on the Icelandic Poppies. The little details in the middle kind of turn into a mess for me. I will try again, though. Not giving up just yet!

de Winton Paper co.

Icelandic poppy is intricate in the centre isn't it, keep going and you'll master it! I had many goes at it before doing that tutorial

Linda Hess

I’m pretty new to watercolor (and drawing) so will be starting with the weekly challenge 1. I’m very excited to begin these challenges.

Hi Harriet, I do not know if you have a double entendre, but you read my mind exactly. It's exactly what I wanted. This exercise is quite difficult but I have done it, and enjoy it by doing again and again. Thank you Harriet for this lesson.

So glad it was spot on! The cherry blossom live stream recording is nearly ready!

Julie

Little late but I‘ve tried it today! 💕 First it didn‘t work out but now after trying multiple times I see some progress! Well explained Harriet! 😘🙏🏽

Andrea Ford

I'm trying this but am getting frustrated because I can't get the petals on the full circle flower all the same length!

de Winton Paper co.

It's something that comes with a bit of practice, keep going and you'll surprise yourself!

Andrea Ford

Thank you for the encouragement. I think it may take quite a bit of practice. Can you tell me what size brush you are using and the size of the full circle flower, please?

de Winton Paper co.

The circle here is just shy of 1cm and I'm using a size 4 brush with a good fine point

Andrea Ford

Oh wow! I'm struggling with a larger circle and smaller brush. I think I need to do lots of different sizes of circles with different sized brushes to work out how I can achieve some satisfactory results. Thank you Harriet.
