"This tribunal is not a forum for debate over the relative merits of different economic systems." – Josiah E. DuBois Jr., Deputy Chief Counsel for Prosecution of War Crimes, Nuremberg Trials, Case #6 ("The IG Farben Trial"), August 27, 1947

Also- the Tyrian purple may have had a psychoactive component- it was very chemically similar to 2CB as it is a bromide salt. Stashed of purple are still found shoved in with piles of gold coin buried by rogue Roman officers as the empire rattled and wheezed into the early centuries of Christendom - only to be left behind and lost as barbarous Angles borrowed from the Teutonic swamplands drove the last of the Mithras worshippers off the islands that would soon perfect pederasty and conquer the world with nothing to offer but damp wool and a war orphaned mongrel’s sense of empire.

I feel like everything you've done has been leading to these past three episodes. This is the apogee of the corpse in orbit.

Byron’s Glowing Filament

Unrelated to the episode but holy fuck what a good one… I’ve started my own little Pynchon pod and I currently have no music. Was wondering how you get around certain… well… you know. I have numerous songs in mind that I want but no label will respond to me in regard to their use. Any thoughts here?

loving the “IG Farben series.” Right place, right time, like you said. Feels good to pull back out of the daily OSINT feed and think

Great ep, finally read GR a few months ago after listening for god knows how's long so it's been nice drilling back into the early ones I'd skipped previously. Will always be eager to hear more close readings when the right moment erupts. Particularly with Enzian and the Hereros. Bit of a pigslop comment but thanks for filling the trough.

Tyson Settle

This is nearing a critical mass for me. This series was able to use the words world war 3, fourth Reich, alchemical index, and all of it had meaning already. It was no longer a process of exploring, it came with its semantics and pragmatics fully developed or nearly. What a Vision. The history of humanity not as a progressively developing Hegelian dialectic, but as the end of a billion years of the richest flowerings of life. Technology as necromancy, the multiplication of death. Enlightenment not as increased awareness of anything but just how fucked we are and dreams a necessary diversion from that ever sharpening axe. Quantised physics is the extension of calculus to the beating heart of reality, the attempt to slice all of reality up into a literal infinity of quanta. Synthesis and control of time and space in the kingdom of the dead.

Heath Iverson

I think I suggest the book to you once a year, but the best answer to the question of synthesis and control is in Hannah Arendt’s Human Condition in its discussion of “acting into nature.” If you want all the insights of Heidegger’s phenomenology with out the nazism and existential morbidity, Arendt is who you need.

As a child I thought it would be pretty cool to be a carnie. As an adult I think it would be pretty cool for “America” to die.

Concerning a previous ep: Pretty sure I would lay down my life for Annibale. He's like if Furio was a serene historian rather than a tortured romantic. The one where, I don't quite remember the context (WW2 Italian Resistance?) where he talks about "And if you went into-a the woods where there were-a the partisans, you eyyyy DIE-ed."

Matthew Krueger

Well, shit. I have been patiently awaiting this(these) ep(s) for such a long time, and it(they) did not disappoint. Death to death transfigured is perfect for Easter in 2026. Earlier in the comments, someone said "apogee of the corpse in orbit." and I don't think I can do any better than that. I've spent days and days thinking about the earth as an electrical transformer. Literally much more than metaphorically, and the difference in the way it must have sounded pre industrial revolution to the way it sounds now. From the surface of the planet. From the surface of the moon. From 2000 light years away. In some ways I've always been thinking about that, without it being concrete, without it being poured into words. It's one of the things your work is so consistently good at doing: the way you're broken lets the light in at an angle that makes it easier to re-contextualize/decipher the 24/7 shadow play we've all either chosen - or been convinced - to not ever turn off anymore. All I have to add to this conversation is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnkSkYOh1jc According to Wikipedia, the album was originally commissioned by the Fuller Paint Company. That nihilism you get accused of had it's fingers around my throat after the middle ep, just because sometimes it seems as though all of this is a fait accompli from the exact moment someone builds the very first fence around that very first garden. Ending it with 20th Century Boy, while being hilarious and perfect, also feels like the wrong side winning, and maybe all of us here really are just neanderthals on our way to being snuffed out of existence with shifting degrees of violence at varying rates of speed. But, we can (as the man once said) ring the bells that still can ring. It might not be enough, but it isn't nothing, and it sounds a hell of a lot better than whatever they're playing.

“Why had judges Shake and Morris reacted as they did?” I concluded that the reason must have been fear-their own great fear of the trend of events in 1948. The issue of communism pertinent to the defendants motives in 1933 and 1934, pertinent to put out of court lives in 1948, was falsely read into the defendants minds as of September 1939. Nowhere was there any evidence that Farben feared Russia enough to stop producing strategic goods for that country… yet the two judges accepted the fiction that Farben was the simple prototype of ‘western capitalism’ - Josiah DuBois
