Just watched Jack Nicholson announce that award and the first thing that drunk mf said was “The best Moat-Shun picture of the year”.

Beautiful! What you’re doing here and with TrueAnon is incredible work. A spiritual history of our modern dark ages.

Great episode as always. Matt's closing comments about the Q phenomenon were so poignant and thought-provoking. I had to re-listen to that section a few times. Would pay and listen to a whole podcast of you two riffing on Scientology, Mormonism, Q, and other outgrowth movements of American mania.

Ed O'Brien

Great episode- can’t wait for the next time you guys do another one together

One thing that this episode uncovers about L. Ron Hubbard that has not been thoroughly exposed-- the guy was unintentionally hilarious (name of his fail-son = Nibs, for example) and everything about the Church of Scientology is so absurd it ideally would never, ever be greeted by anyone with anything but peals of laughter. Goofiest Of All Time.

There's Nothing Weird About It

Somewhat randomly chanced upon your work, started reading your blog and I don't think I've come across anything more poignantly synchronistic and then you're kicking off the first episode I listen to with an impersonation of a song that I haven't been able to get out of my head for the last couple of months. wtf, thank you!

Compare min. 40 about the structural inauguration into scientology as the continued frontier with the desert motorbike scene from the Master

paid $5 cause i love matt but this greatly exceeded my expectations! your analysis was extremely interesting and I'll be staying subscribed for the foreseeable future! also I agree with the other comment, the whites in the russian civil war would be an amazing episode, I'd be really interested in hearing about it.

You briefly mentioned something about Trump being an asset? I was wondering if you could point me toward the episode that you make reference to regarding that, or any other sources that might be helpful on that topic. Thanks!

Andrew Tomy

I re-listened to this episode and your discussion on the evangelical/Q belief in trump further reminded me of the great interview with Frank Schaeffer on the Citations Needed podcast last year. Particularly trump's being a fuck up not discouraging evangelical's faith in him, but actually creating more like the addictive response one would expect from random reward-style conditioning. Thanks!

Great episode. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on Lawrence Wright. I thoroughly enjoyed Going Clear and The Looming Tower when I read them 7-8 years ago, but now I'm absolutely convinced he's a CIA asset and I'm surprised he hasn't come up on your podcast or on TrueAnon. The Looming Tower, especially, seems over-determined by his commitment to blaming the fact that "no one saw it coming" on interagency squabbles instead of exploring the idea that information was purposefully withheld at specific sites within the intelligence networks. There are strong cross-currents between the two books re: cult formation and controlling group-think that feel especially relevant to QAnon as well.

As an ace sub hunter myself, I think you're being too hard on L. Ron, those bastards can be pretty tricky
