I'm happy you're still alive dude.

Won’t be able to listen until Monday but lots of love 💙 also if you’re still having insomnia, I used to struggle with no sleep for days (literally) when I was having a hard time and the only thing that helped is this weird Korean skincare thing. It’s called tony moly panda dream cooling eye stick and i think it’s just a menthol cooling type thing you can put on your eye bags.

Brilliant episode and so hope you’re doing well - so grateful for another episode. Lots of support ❤️ Curious as to your thoughts about the teleologies of other post colonial nations that reconstituted themselves less out of any real shared history and moreso imagined national ambitions - countries like India, Indonesia, and Nigeria come to mind here. Some of Alex Hochuli’s writing on Brazilian modernism is super interesting in light of your thoughts on the United States, and I’d love to hear your take on it all at some point. Please take it easy - any length of sabbatical for you would be deserved for what you’ve made already.

Blanket thanks aren’t even necessary. I value what you do and I’m glad you’re still here.

you rule michael. your description of relapse + withdrawal conveys perfectly what hell it truly is

Michael I love you please take care of yourself, if ye kill thyself thine will cause much sadness

CMPN

extremely serviceable trump impression.

Lukas McCutcheon

It is comforting to a degree that we feel similarly in specific ways so, thank you. But, most of those specific ways are really all the reasons that I absolutely wish I was not alive and am actively disappointed that I lack the will to end. I do hope that, for any reason, we eventually feel differently. As terrible as this shit is, though, feeling isolated through absolutely makes it substantially worse, so I think you can feel like you helped dispel that isolated feeling in at least one person, and that makes it worth it.

Bilbo

You're just human. Of course we don't hold it against you for suffering. Its the meaning you make out of our shared suffering that makes you so interesting and wonderful! Take care of yourself and I'm staying subbed.

Busdriver112

have not finished the episode yet, but I like you. keep it up friend

William Toms

Take care of yourself man. You may want to exist solely inside the project, but the project is an extension of you. Just know how grateful we are for both.

Adam

Keep it up MSJ ❤️🤟

I don't know how to express how much I appreciated both this and your last post Michael, the sincerity meant a lot and helped a lot.

Michael, I really enjoyed this episode in particular. While I see your work as a panoply of different gifts (bricolage) of skills, insights and resources what creates the gravitational pull into your orbit, the most is your “truth telling” or better yet truth drilling - with vibrations resonating all through your listening body politic and your physical being - it’s a revolutionary act telling the truth in this day and age and your resilience in the face of this truth telling is helpful to me. Anyways, long story short - don’t let anyone tell you “you’re back” - because in my estimation you never left! In Veritas we love! Best John

Henry

Love you and glad you’re doing better Michael. The last episode was very difficult for me to listen to, and I was very worried about you. I’m very happy that you’re feeling stronger ❤️❤️❤️❤️

oxyhyxo

you sum up places I've been but can't articulate so well man. Thank you.

This podcast goes so good with severe opiate withdrawal

Lucas

love all the work you do, MJ. you are the logos peeling back the works of the demiurge (literal)

flawless trump impression But in all seriousness, excellent episode. I know I could fuckin pick up a damn book once in a while, but there truly is not enough popular media which deconstructs the mythology in our heads surrounding the founding of the US, and not nearly enough education given to us on the evolution of what it was then into what it is today. Growing up in Georgia with liberal parents made that disconnect feel more tangible, because I was always taught by them that this country, especially our state, is marked by the sin of slavery. But both of my parents had mythologies of their own to compensate and still believe in America as a concept which I had inherited. My mom was from Memphis and remembers the MLK assassination in her childhood how I remember 9/11, and always believed in Civil Rights and went to integrated schools. My dad was from northern Ohio, and his ancestors fought against the south. As result they both taught me the mindset that actually, the values hinted at in the constitution are what this country really does stand for, and time and time again we have examples of good people fighting for those values and winning, and boy oh boy did they fall for the MSNBC brand of anti-trump hysteria (which the ruling class needed to pump out because any legitimate criticism of Trump would translate to a legitimate criticism of any fuckin president). But growing up where I did, I got to see all the delusions of people who believed that no, actually there were some redeemable values to the confederacy. Actually, the desire for segregation made sense at the time. You see, this is all about the will of the voters! This is all about state’s rights! The natives didn’t deserve the land because they “weren’t doing anything with it”! I even had a history teacher in high school tell us the state’s rights argument for a whole class, had us watch a reagan-era documentary about how America is a christian nation, and would go on rants about the evils of islam. Idk what her deal with the confederacy was, the lady was so obviously from New Jersey that she didn’t need to tell you she was by the time you already knew. But it all got me thinking about what delusions I was raised to believe in as a good liberal. Then I grew up and learned how my Mom’s dad actually was constantly ranting about how the “blacks” at his work were so ungrateful for his help of their community. What’s worse, when she told me this, she said how he had a point! Then I learned that my dad, and by extension me, is a few generations removed from Lewis Wetzel, a famed Pennsylvania bavarian pioneer and notable mass murderer of native peoples. The guy was known for smelling like shit and taking pot shots at random hunting parties, for no reason other than revenge of a family member and BOY did he exceed the limit for revenge. The guy allegedly coined the term “the only good indian is a dead one”. My dad in telling me this was keen to point out how he was an impressive marksman and actually helped the revolution, so he wasn’t all bad. So there goes any hope of washing the generational blood off of my hands. And since realizing this, reading more about how anti-black racism bleeds into today’s societal structures, and how the mass genocide that founded this country is still swept under the rug like it isn’t the greatest atrocity in human history, and how we pillaged the world using the fight against communism as a flimsy cover, etc etc on and on and on… It’s frustrating to not be able to just… see an honest movie or show about the founding and the decades following; not the bullshit “values” it all stood for, but the real self-interested mechanisms of power it established. I apologize if this comment is a bit navel-gazey, but as a guy in his mid 20’s I feel like I’m still just waking out of a fever dream of delusion.

sending love, very grateful and happy to hear you on the uphill, even if it's still a low point. <333 hearts eternal

Michael are you familiar with Sam Patch, the famous jumper? I’ve also been listening to and really enjoying Hell of Presidents, but I really would have gotten a kick out a discussion of him, and what his life and career illustrate about the growth of capitalism and wage labor, and the changing definitions and guarantors of one’s masculinity in that period. I actually took a Jacksonian American history class in college, and you’re right, it’s criminally underrepresented, and it fills in so many of the holes in the gap between the “Founding Fathers” golden-sepia age, and the terrible, visceral familiarity of the civil war and photographic age.

Thank you MSJ

Your transparency truly does resonate. Self-awareness in the midst of a mental/physical crisis is hell. Thanks for letting others know they're not alone, and hopefully you know you're not alone either.

GYPSUM

Hey man I hear you talking about your chest pain while you sleep and I had some killer tightness around my ribs that was fucking up my vagus nerve and making me feel claustrophobic all the time no matter where I was. I listen to cum town too and I bought that thing that nick talks about the pso-rite and the spinal adjuster and I’ve spent the last week just annihilating my back and shoulder and ribs on this thing. It may not help but it’s something to do . Love you

N

Hey man. Really glad you didn't die. Adding to the chorus of people saying we will stay subbed even if you put out like 1 ep every 6 months.

Caleb

Take a year to write an episode if you need to dude. I turned in 65 pages of text on Cognitive Linguistics and Embodied Realism from Aristotle to Lakhoff the day of our finals, my prof gave me a 69, 79, and 89 on the essays taking off a graduating amount of points for the tardiness of each of the papers. In other words, they were 99% papers, just not at the time of my having turned them in. So, when I started teaching fucking college art classes, I let my students know that timelines were important, but the fucking work is what mattered. Your work is stellar. Take all the time you need, I’m not going anywhere.

Spearmint Agnew

Joining the many accounts on Patreon and elsewhere wishing you well. Behind each of them is a person who cares about you very much and has learned a lot from the program—take however long with it and we’ll be here when it’s ready

Sending love your way. Thank you for all you do -- we really do appreciate you. I related way too much to your previous episode. Thanks for being real with us, but please prioritize your health and safety. Also if you're able... Kick the booze. It's probably fucking you up more than the Lucky Strikes. I kicked it a few years ago somehow. I'm still fucking crazy but it's a lot easier to manage now.

Shan Devlin

You're doing the most important and provocative work I've heard in politics and social commentary, please take all the time you need to heal and stay balanced/level comrade
