A retrospective tribute to our fallen brother Pat Robertson, cut down in the full prime of his gallantry at the tender age of 93. Then: people without gods worship the saints, and people without saints try to metabolize the Icons.

Hi Mike: Have you ever done or thought about doing an episode about the connection between the CIA and the Grateful Dead, or that whole SF scene in general?

Let’s gooooo! Saturday at the guitar repair bench is so much nicer with this. All the co workers get scared though

Been reading American Nightmare on someone’s recommendation (Radio War Nerd comments I think??), gonna dig into Death/Corner as a pick-me-up.

I might have it wrong but I think Patty and some other evangelical said we have privet jets to spread the word and if Jesus didn't want us to have them then we wouldn't. Can't argue with that logic 🤷🏻‍♀️

Have you watched the shiny happy people doc? College roomie loved the creepy weird shows. I was slightly horrified at how much overlaped my fundie raising. Episode 4 would be terrifying if they didn't just keep getting out aside for word sex crimes

Repacious thirst for wealth and power.. I just learned that the ball mason jars I use aren't just from a chill class company

I remember being "home sick" from school in the early 80s and seeing the 700 Club on TV. Two segments that are still in memory are a lady who started doing some kind of TM and was beset by Satan, requiring refuge in the Lord and a couple living in a trailer park who were broke but upon sending a donation to Robertson's organization, won a local lottery for a few grand. I was too young to have any idea that this was proto prosperity gospel but had the sense to know it was phony. And ol' Pat would do faith healing via TV signal; the power of Christ compels you indeed.

I saw that you conspicuously didn’t take Felix et al’s bait concerning Gravity’s Rainbow, which reinforced the notion that they were just breaking balls. I agree with the other commenter who said Matt Christman would dig it the most. And Against the Day!

I swear every ten minutes I start thinking "Now would be a good time for him to bring up The Anathemata."

Great episode, love what you're getting at. As someone who's into kabbalah I'm always interested in how you fit it into your ideas. I've been leeching off a friend's membership for a very long time, but I decided to bite da bullet and start paying up. Thanks for what you do, this podcast is very valuable. It's sad. Like we live in a sad world and I want to live a happy life, which I kind of do, but I want it to go on and know that after I go, the world will still be okay. And I fear collapse. I don't want to experience it. Like, I'm a librarian and I live in New York City. I have a benign brain tumor that keeps coming back and I rely on a strong medical system to deal with it. When everything falls apart, I'm not in a good position to be a little cockroach and maneuver my way around anything. I'm in a population center and my only real skill is putting on after school programs for teens. I'm comfortable and happy now but it's hard to shake the idea out of the back of my head that in 20-30 years if we're not all dead, we're at least going to be living differently and a lot worse and all our roles will be unfamiliar and harsher. It's just fucking sad and terrifying and usually it's comfortable to just forget it and go along having fun where I can and loving my partner and my pets and my family. But all thats to say, it feels right somehow to get some sober analysis from you every week. Like, I live my life in a kind of denial, but I'm also into everything you're into. I love Bowie, I love Pynchon, I love mysticism, I love evil history and I'm never not trying to think of WHY everything is. So these shows are always a generally sad but very correct place for my brain to be for at least a little while. Anyway, thank you. This should have been a DM, but whatever. Last thing: what do you think of this: "Hey that's my ass! Quit Pynchon it!"

This puts to mind the recent trend of those particular types of stores in a "trendy" neighborhood in any city in America selling literal votive candles to celebrities.

Just last week I received a phone call from a relative who informed me that we are living in the end times and that the rapture is nigh (as in 5 years or so) due to the many prophecies that have now been fulfilled. Not a fun phone call. And on top of it, the reminder that way too many Americans share this viewpoint. That's a lot of brain damage.

Even though I PHded on the guy, I’m loathe to talk about Heidegger as well. That being said, I couldn’t agree more that the constellation of ideas he plays with starting in his readings of Hölderlin concerning “das Heilige” (“the holy” as the empty site left behind after the withdrawal of the gods), “the other beginning”, and onto-theology are massively instructive in trying to think through this shit.

Great episode, Michael, as usual. Do you have any specific recommendations for further reading on modernist interpretations of Greek mythology?

Michael I know you won’t see this because you are famous and therefore not real but I listened to this last week, and then worked two double shifts at a coffee shop in downtown pittsburgh this weekend serving swifties because t*ylor sw*ft was in town. Let me say, I had no idea this existed at all, but I have been so profoundly shaken by the aggregate interactions I had over the last 48 hours that I am not sure I will ever recover. This figure represents something satanic and evil beyond anything else that exists in this epoch

See, they return; ah, see the tentative Movements, and the slow feet, The trouble in the pace and the uncertain Wavering! See, they return, one, and by one, With fear, as half-awakened; As if the snow should hesitate And murmur in the wind, and half turn back; These were the "Wing'd-with-Awe," inviolable. Gods of the wingèd shoe! With them the silver hounds, sniffing the trace of air! Haie! Haie! These were the swift to harry; These the keen-scented; These were the souls of blood. Slow on the leash, pallid the leash-men! Ezra Pound, “The Return”

Acid hawkers to this day still claim their shit is from the greatful dead "family" of secret chemists to move product, and who knows, maybe in a sense it is.

Listening to the last two episodes thinking fuck I think I've deified fucking Taylor swift. Mike: "or Taylor Swift"
