Help pick the Thriller movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen Donnie Darko, so this would only be Sam's first time watching!

Comments

Roy Wright

Voting Blow Out lol underrated because Donnie Darko will probably win

Lynette Cummins

Out of all of the I have only seen Insomnia. I liked it so it gets my vote.

Scott

Donnie Darko is incredible

Backlog Andy M.

Got to say Donnie Darko because of my fav band Tears For Fears!

thansen

Double Indemnity and then Blow Out and then M and then Donnie Darko. I want to see Wages of Fear and then Sorcerer, which just came out on Criterion.

Paul Cox

"Thriller" is probably one of the toughest genres to clearly define, so there are some curious inclusions here. I'm just gonna treat this like there's no theme and vote for what's good.

Boris-N

Good mixture of different eras, however, Come And See is a war movie not a thriller. I would recommend Frantic by Polanski.

Shehab Dawoud

Donnie Darko will be tough to beat. It’s a shame because Insomnia is such an underrated Nolan movie. I preferred him early on in his career. Also one of Pacino’s best imo, certainly in the last 20+ years.

Tyler Foster

I wish it was the original 1997 Insomnia. The remake is decent, but it pales in comparison to the haunting Norwegian version.

Henry Graham

I don't know if I'd class Donnie Darko as a thriller. High and Low is my favourite Kurosawa film and it's perhaps the greatest lesson in how to block and compose shots for a 2:35 frame that any director ever gave.

Boris-N

Blow Out is a great movie.

Tyler Foster

I also think, unfortunately, that classic films are always going to be at such a disadvantage that it's better if they're on their own polls.

Henry Graham

Yeah, I agree. I'd only rank Oppenheimer and Memento ahead of Insomnia in Nolan's body of work. Pacino is unbelievable in it.

Henry Graham

My favourite De Palma! It's so good.

Jason Dolan

You should cross off every Nolan but Blow Out needs to be watched

Paul Cox

If there's ever a Noir poll with no Hitchcock, Double Indemnity might stand a chance. But otherwise, it just gets humiliated.

Future Boy

Films that are new to you both are so much more fun, so I'm really hoping for Insomnia or Blow Out. You'd love either of them.

Florian Meier

Blow Out and Insomnia for me !!! But please put on the Next Thriller Polls Basic Instinct and A Fatal Attraction !!! Both 2 of the Best

Vincent Hollow

Crazy how the two I was torn between are the two in the top positions. 👀

Vincent Hollow

I didn't know Nolan's was a remake. I'll have to check out the original.

Marcus Cato

I was about to make this exact same suggestion. Recency bias pretty much clobbers anything before 2000, and having a date-restricted poll is pretty much the only way some truly great films have any chance of winning.

ShadowVessel π

Donnie Darko would need a complete different reaction video that explains the movie. 😂 That being said, it's the only movie I voted for on the list.

ShadowVessel π

Right? Once you know the details behind the story it's a completely different movie.

Birdie Num Num

You should check the others out, some of them are considered among the best films ever made. If you liked Zodiac, Memories of Murder is a must see, it strongly influenced Zodiac. Blow Out is widely considered Brian De Palma's best film and probably Travolta's 2nd best film after Pulp Fiction. High and Low has been recently been remade by Spike Lee with Denzel Washington(comes to AppleTV+ in the fall)

Birdie Num Num

how many of the films in the poll have you seen, Shehab? Just curious.

Shehab Dawoud

I've seen the first 6 + M, Memories of Murder, and Yojimbo.

intothegrinder

Some suggestions for future Thriller Polls... Obsession (1976) The Gauntlet (1977) The Driver (1978) The Silent Partner (1978)

adam weisler

Blow out is so seldom watched by reactors, and you guys are such incredible fun and thoughtful ones! Really think you'll love it!

Lynette Cummins

I didn't know that insomnia was directed by Christopher Nolan. Thanks Mike. Have Dan and Sam seen Inception???

Tyler Foster

@Vincent They are very similar, but the original had a fair amount of its darkness shaved off for American audiences. Stellan Skarsgard plays the Pacino role, and it's one of his best performances. Ultimately, I wish the American one simply didn't contain so many of the same scenes; it would be easier to accept it as its own thing.

Tyler Foster

That said, I definitely prefer the Theatrical Cut, and not the Director's Cut, which seems intent on removing some of the mystery.

Abel Salas Jr

Even if it doesn't win, you really should carve out time to watch Double Indemnity. It is 1 of the great Film Noir movies and really set the bar for the genre. Fred MacMurry as Insurance agent manipulated by Barbra Stanwick is so good. Also has the great Edward G. Robinson.

Tyler Foster

Also, although it looks like it'll be some time before it has a chance, I'm glad Memories of Murder is at least on the poll. I think you guys would love that movie.

Marcus Cato

It looks like Donnie Darko has a very good chance of winning. If it wins, I recommend that there be another poll to determine if they should watch the theatrical version vs the director's cut. I personally think the director's cut butchered the movie. I know quite a few people agree with me.

Anthony Harris

It is a great movie. I missed it when I first checked. Gave it a vote too.

Paul Cox

For once, I'll have to sit out a discussion on that topic. I've never seen the director's cut lol.

Antmovies

COME AND SEE is not a thriller. I don't know if the IMDb's smoking crack or someone told you that. It's a War movie through and through and very slow. I voted for BLOW OUT which is a true thriller and one of the best on here. I just saw F1 and they stole an iconic shot from that movie. Plus it's by one of my favorite directors and you need to do more of his films, if you've done any. I think you did one. HIGH AND LOW is great. I think it's more suspenseful than a thriller tho. You need to get cracking on that director's filmography too. Did you guys do UNCUT GEMS, cause that's nerve-wracking and a recent 10/10?

Antmovies

I'll second FRANTIC. ✋🏼

Paul Cox

If you're talking about De Palma, they've done Carrie, Scarface, The Untouchables, and Carlito's Way. Maybe something else, but those are the ones I can immediately remember.

Mark M

Level out the votes so there is a 3 way tie.

Antmovies

I literally only remembered The Untouchables. I bought brain pills. I just forget to take them.🤦🏽‍♀️

Paul Cox

I've never understood why the polls stay open for the entire month. The results are pretty much decided in the first 4-5 days, but I guess it's an opportunity for people who join in the middle of the month to participate. So if you're new and you're reading this on July 16th, there's still time!

Look out, Arbogast!

I've been putting Memories of murder on the monthly poll for over a year lol. So to see it on a genre poll lets me take a break 🤣

Bill Woods

The 13th Warrior (1999), Antonio Banderas goes aviking.

thebeefmaster

Suggestion for future Thriller Poll "Devil" (2010)

Tyler Foster

The Prestige is on the channel for sure, and they definitely talk about what Nolan they've seen in that video.

mikethemotormouth

I've never seen the DC either but I have heard the same

Marcus Cato

I concur with Come and See not being a thriller. Definitely a war film. Not something I think I will revisit, as good as it wasz

Red Tail Zephier

I hope Come and See wins, but I'd be ok with a Blow Out reaction

Birdie Num Num

well the action film poll went down to the final week(The Warriors edging Face/Off by one vote. I was hoping for a tie.

Marcus Cato

It's probably overstating a bit by saying butchered, but I didn't think the extra scenes added anything and it really threw off the pacing of the film. In my humble opinion.

Birdie Num Num

Come and See has been in like 5 war film polls already. After The Game won the "detective film poll" in a landslide, all bets are off imo. And Cuckoo's Nest won a comedy film poll. Genre means nothing around here(its whatever google says...)

Lou@Jersey

I'm not familiar with most of these movies, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, please consider adding to your list of movies to react to, 'Identity'! You will not regret it. It is WILD! Trust me! Sam, use your mental superpower over Daniel, and put this one on the list of soon reaction videos! 😁👍Love you guys❤️

ron clint

At some point, try to fit in DIABOLIQUE (1955), one slick thriller and a spooky ride. Sam would eat it up lol

Duncan

I have only ever seen 4 of the movies on this poll and they are the 4 leading the votes,I have never even heard of most of the others, nor have I ever seen them on any polls on other reaction channels. Also most patreons on these channels don't even read or post in the chat,so disappointed to hear that a select few in there are deciding for everyone, what goes on the polls,if that is indeed true.

Boris-N

I've seen 7 of them.

Paul Cox

I've also only seen 7, though I've seen enough of Come and See that it's more like 7.5.

Brad P

I've seen all but two. This poll contains some of my favorite movies of all time.

bosho11

Not a Thriller, but Yojimbo is a major movie missing from your reactions, especially since you liked Fist Full of Dollars so much.

John Fitzpatrick

If you have Wages of Fear on this list, you should also have Sorcerer.

John Fitzpatrick

You guys need to do Blow Out when you get the chance.

TBR Schmitt

I want to clarify that there is not a small group of patrons deciding what goes on the polls. Daniel and I spend a lot of time researching online, going through recommendations from the chat, different platforms, and the comments on previous polls of the same genre to come up with these options -Sam

Tyler Foster

10 - have yet to see Come and See, The Lives of Others, The Secret in Their Eyes, and Wild Tales.

Tyler Foster

As it seems pretty clear that Donnie Darko is pulling ahead, some more insight on the differences between the two cuts: Donnie Darko was originally released in 2001 after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. It was underpromoted by the studio and flopped in theaters, but it became a cult phenomenon on DVD, so much so that 20th Century Fox went to Kelly and offered to rerelease it. Kelly pitched a director's cut and it was released in 2004. I think a major factor in that initial cult appeal is the film's ambiguity and mystery. There are many things in it that you have to put together or interpret on your own. The director's cut, conversely, seems determined to explain things more clearly, adding 20 minutes of footage and pages of a book that is central to the story on-screen to hold the viewer's hand. For that reason, I definitely think the theatrical cut is the way to go for a first-time viewer; the film thrives on its strangeness. For what it's worth, while the director's cut is called a Director's Cut, in 2017, Kelly gave an interview to Slant Magazine where he said "I wanted the director’s cut to suggest an extended remix of a song. I’m not entirely satisfied with either version of the film, but I like both of them equally."

Lou@Jersey

Hey, Sam and Daniel. I just remembered a great thriller staring Kurt Russell. It's titled, 'Breakdown.' I don't know if anyone has mentioned it. But a great movie to react to! 👌

ButtercupsTrueLove

Clint Eastwood's directorial debut, "Play Misty For Me" (1971). This film started a trend in films.

Alan Allen

Would love to see your reaction to BEAU IS AFRAID starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Ari Aster

Ken Veader

We've been trying to get that thru on here for years now

Ken Veader

Sorcerer is amazing and the better version imo

CC

From my point of view it's really worth it to watch both versions of the movie, but definitely starting with the original theatrical cut, because you keep even more of the mystery and "mindfuck" feeling. And then, if you enjoyed this kind of experience and the characters and everything you might read up a little on the movie and later also watch the director's cut that gives you a couple more elements of background explanation towards what was actually going on in Kelly's mind, which you couldn't possibly have all picked up from your first watch :)

Eugene

Yes would love to see more De Palma.
