Help pick the Drama movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

NOTE: I have seen Life is Beautiful, TBOEM, Requiem for a Dream, and Warrior so this would only be Sam's first time watching! Sam has seen The Pianist so this would only be my first time watching!

For the love of God The Counte of Monte Cristo

Paul Cox

Pouring one out for my beloved Cinema Paradiso already 😭

Donna Castellano

Ooh. Yay. My movie pick is on the poll. *crosses fingers for Amadeus*

Ian

Voting for the count of Monti cristo for this one , it's been remade quite a few times but this version is fantastic and one you will both love . I promise 🙂

Micah Mann

ALL OF US STRANGERS (beautiful, sad, mystical love story) & The ZONE OF INTEREST (Nazi era drama won Oscars last year for Sound Design and International film)

Paul Cox

I feel good about its chances. I won't even quibble about which cut!

Backlog Andy M.

I remember my mum and dad going on a date night while my uncle babysitted me in 1982 while they went watch an Officer And A Gentlemen. Once Upon A Time In America is also a favourite of my parent's. Sergio Leone's last film i believe. Part of a trilogy not so much connected but same universe as Once Upon A Time In The West!

ron clint

OUTIA...directed by legend Sergio Leone ( Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good the Bad, and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West). Epic in every way.

Shehab Dawoud

I prefer The Simpsons parody, The Count of Monte Fatso!

Tinker

You both would LOVE Amadeus!!

Pam Nail

Same! One of my all-time top ten.

Donna Castellano

I only first saw it about 5 years ago. Quickly became a favorite of mine. I know Daniel and Sam would enjoy it, it's such a good story and the performances are incredible, esp F Murray Abraham.

Shehab Dawoud

It saddens me that The Hunt, a film from my country, barely has any reactions. It is one of the best films you’ll see.

Toc

The THEATRICAL cut of Amadeus.....not the lousy Director's Cut. The theatrical cut is perfectly paced; the director's cut bloats the movie to 3 hours.... The theatrical cut is what won the Oscars and what schools took kids to see; the director's cut actually changes how a major character is perceived. Theatrical cut all the way.

thansen

Anything except woke.

Paul Cox

I do agree with you, especially now that the theatrical cut is back in circulation with a new 4K remaster, but I've wanted an Amadeus reaction for so long I'm willing to go with either.

Charles Gaba

Strong agree! The directors cut is terrible—the extra footage is completely unnecessary and ruins a major character.

Charles Gaba

Requiem would be a brave choice for a reaction.

Toc

That's fantastic news!!!! I've seen reactors wilt under the Director's Cut. That just does not happen with the theatrical cut!

Charles Gaba

If you watch once upon a Time in America make sure to watch the European cut (which is like 60% longer but necessary—the American cut is nearly unwatchable).

ShadowVessel π

Ok, this is the first time I've voted for two in a while. The Count of Monte Cristo is the greatest revenge movie ever made...with Sleepers only coming in second because it references The Count of Monte Cristo. Oh yeah, and Warrior 🤘

Joel P

Amadeus and Monte Cristo are both great, the former being a cinematic masterpiece. The Hunt is underrated and I hope you watch it at some point.

PIG

Amadeus is kicking ass! :)

Jeromy M

Whoa, what a list.

PIG

Agreed!

Ellie Williams

Count of Monte Cristo has been 2nd in these polls forever! C'mon!

Smooticus

Alright, what the hell happened to Barry Lyndon?

Smooticus

If you do see Onc Upon a Time in America, see the unedited/ director's cut. The theatrical release is a mess. There is some amazing cinematography in this, especially when they're kids in Brooklyn

Eugene

Would love to see both Once Upon a Time in America/the West

Athos Count de la Fère

12 Years. The last time I actually cried in a movie theater. That had me, for a few days.

Athos Count de la Fère

I must recommend 1970's, The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers. One of my favorite roles for Oliver Reed.

Paul Cox

Without divulging too much to avoid spoilers, here's a little breakdown of the discussion that may arise should Amadeus actually win: The theatrical cut is obvs the version that everyone saw in 1984/85 and it's the version that won Best Picture. However, the theatrical cut has—until 2025—been out of circulation for a very long time (the last time it was issued on dvd was 1998). That means there's a whole generation of people who've only ever seen the film's "director's cut." Each version has its acolytes, but it's worth noting that the 20 minutes of footage incorporated into the director's cut significantly changes the tenor of the film, and particularly the impression the viewer has on one character. So you have two camps: the "who asked for this extra footage??" camp and the "why's that footage missing??" camp. Miloš Forman was pretty dodgy on the subject himself, but didn't object to his name being put on the director's cut, though it's unclear how significantly he was actually involved with it. All that said, there's a new 4K restoration of the theatrical cut, the version that's been out of print for almost 3 decades. It's readily available on blu-ray, and I see it's available to rent on Prime (as is the director's cut). So it's really up to you guys.

Brad P

Luckily, the awful theatrical cut isn't that easy to find anymore

Look out, Arbogast!

I'm probably in the surprising (to me) minority that prefers the Director's cut. Salieri admirers might hate it, but it works better as a narrative. That being said, I think the theatrical cut flows better as a movie. But either way, I'm thrilled to see this masterpiece jumping out to an early lead.

Florian Meier

Amadeus would be Perfect as Winner !!! But i Miss "Kramer vs Kramer" on this Poll ... For Me one of the Best Drama Films of All Time ... Oscars for Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep

Vincent Hollow

I'm actually surprised Requiem is on here considering Dan's recollection of it during their Trainspotting review. It is a great movie, but boy howdy, that will certainly be an...experience.

Dan Holmes

Count of Monte Cristo deserves a win, such a banger. snd you get more original Dumbledore!

Smooticus

Thankk God for Criterion

Smooticus

i put in a vote jsut becaue of this post

Smooticus

My favorite adaptation of teh book. These movies are fun

Smooticus

in An Officer and a Gentleman, Lou Gossett Jr steals the show and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The movie is worth waching for him alone.

Miles E Coburn

Well, like I said in the Schmitthead Monthly Movie Drawing - July Entries post I'm kind of on an Alexandre Dumas kick. So I gotta go with "The Count of Monte Cristo" (2002). A very good retelling of Dumas' book with a very good cast: Jim Caviezel as Edmund Dantes / the Count, Guy Pearce as Fernand Montego, Richard Harris as Abbe Faria, and sharp-eyed viewers will spot a young Henry Cavill.

Miles E Coburn

I consider it the definitive version of Dumas' book. Some don't like it because modern day preferences lean towards more gritty movies. But Lester's version is closest to what he envisioned; an adventure story.

Miles E Coburn

And after that, the 1973 version of Dumas' classic book "The Three Musketeers" (and the sequel - filmed at the same time, "The Four Musketeers" (1974)).

Lou@Jersey

As a musician, I was so inspired by 'Amadeus', not just for the music, but how well this movie was done. Amazing costumes, and setting. How true the story is to what unfolded in the life of one of the greatest pianist and composer, is another story. As a kid at that time, I was blown away! I still listen to classical music, but don't let that discourage you. You will love the story.

Birdie Num Num

this is the 4th poll count of monte cristo will apparently lose. Just lost an adventure poll(by a big margin) to O Brother Where Art Thou. and lost 2 Drama Polls last year to Trainspotting and Dog Day Afternoon(also by big margins) Should probably keep it in the Adventure poll, there were polls without it in the past that it probably would have won. or maybe have a Period Piece Poll? So many titles fit that genre. Also please include The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) in your next Adventure Poll.

Chris Baldwin

Seems like forever that I've put forward "Three Billboard's Outside Ebbing Missouri" for the spin the wheel contest's. It finally made it onto ANY poll! Sadly, it looks like it will just be another loser. Too bad, it's a great film. The other movie I've mentioned is "Death to Smoochy". I realize one of you has already seen it, so I guess I'll just move on to another choice. Have a great day everyone!

Vincent Hollow

I would love for them to watch, not necessarily react to, the classic version of Monte Cristo as well. I don't know the year, but it was the version V was watching in V for Vendetta. I personally haven't seen it, but id be happy to watch it along with them if they did.

David W.

Don't listen to the American critics: CINEMA PARADISO director's cut is the better one.

Backlog Andy M.

Looks like Amadeus is kicking ass. I vividly remember watching the academy awards with my mum when that film won the big awards. Tom Hulce from Animal House was outstanding. Funny I saw F.Murry Abraham in a episode of Kojak the other day!

Scott O

Warrior is one of the best sports movies of all time.

Toc

One more time: the THEATRICAL cut for "Amadeus". If you can't find the Theatrical Cut, let me know. The Theatrical Cut is what everybody loves, it's a perfect film with nothing out of place.....like a piece of music by "Amadeus" himself; the Director's Cut completely upsets the balance of the movie. I promise you: theatrical cut of "Amadeus" is the way to go.
