Help pick the Robert Duvall movie we will react to!

Please feel free to suggest other options in the comments for future polls!

*NOTE: I have seen Open Range so this would only be Sam's first time watching!

Comments

Abel Salas Jr

He won his only Best Actor Oscar for Tender Mercies. LFG

Roy Wright

The Natural is probably going to win and is an amazing movie but if going Robert Duvall leading the movie need to go Tender Mercies or The Great Santini

Kevin Charley

Why the hell would people vote for Deep Impact?

MsMeree520

I was hoping to see Phenomenon with John Travolta on the list. Loved him in that movie as the doctor. Not his biggest role but has stayed with me all these years.

Roy Wright

lol I know I was like maybe I need to rewatch that. I missed something

Allen S.

This has to be Network. Mr. Duvall has one particular scene that aptly describes the state of our world today.

Michael Bauer

I hope " A Civil Action" will do better on a John Travolta Poll or something like that in the Future. Great Movie.

Miles E Coburn

You don't know he plays the Mission Commander. Spurgeon Tanner? Or that he's listed FIRST in the cast credits?

Miles E Coburn

My favorite, "Open Range" (2003) probably won't win (or even come close to winning) as the Western genre doesn't seem too popular on this channel. But I keep hoping. Maybe I'll switch up my choice on the Schmitthead monthly drawing.

Jen Barnes

If you watch Open Range I can finally pick a new entry for the Schmitt Wheel.

Alex Aguilera

Colors (1988) not in the poll 😭 One of the most classic LA hood films with both Robert Duvall and Sean Penn

Presto2222

Neither will probably win, but don’t miss Secondhand Lions or Open Range. Really amazing films.

Alex Aguilera

I loved their Armageddon reaction and Deep Impact has a similar plot. Simple as.

Anthony Perez

+PLEASE :: Tender Mercies...Sam will love it. no viloence, no car cgase , just mature love story between teo people over 60

Nick Kessler

I have one for you!!!! How about George Lucas's first movie called THX 1138 starring Robert Duvall!

Stephanie

Why should they not vote for it? It's a great movie.

OddThomas

Deep Impact and Open Range for me. Days of Thunder is awful but Duvall is the best thing about it

Smooticus

Pretty surprised at that myself

Smooticus

His best role IMHO

Michael Buhl

Network is one of my all-time top five favorite movies! I love it dearly! All four of its Oscar wins are well deserved, especially best screenplay!

Birdie Num Num

more like a love story between a 50 year old and a 30 year old:)

Birdie Num Num

The titles in the poll were pretty much decided in the chat by me and Paul after Duvall passed. A Duvall poll was my suggestion. I forgot Colors. You should join the chat sometime, many decisions are made there:)

Birdie Num Num

I like Deep Impact, but you'd have to go pretty far down in any obituary or tribute to Duvall to see any mention of it. While Tender Mercies, Santini, Lonesome Dove, Network and of course Godfather and Apocalypse are in the first paragraph. But I've learned many times over the years here that this is quite a different crowd than most film buffs etc. 90s and early 00s nostalgia generally trumps everything here.

Anthony Perez

acrually Duvall was 26 yrs i=older but I dnt see what that has to do with the movie.

Vincent Hollow

The Apostle would ve a great choice because not only does it star Robert Duvall, he also wrote and directed it.

Chris Bruneau

I love that you are doing this poll! Duvall was a fantastic actor

Warren H

Have to say it, Lonesome Dove was Duvall’s favorite roll (he stated it many times over the years), was also the miniseries which directly led to the whole notion of high-quality, long-form storytelling being profitable (without Lonesome Dove’s success there’d be no Band of Brothers, Game of Thrones, True Detective, etc). I sure wish SOMEBODY would do it. And by somebody, of course I mean you guys. 😁

Birdie Num Num

the Duvall movies reacted to so far: To Kill A Mockingbird The Godfather 1 and 2 The Conversation Apocalypse Now Falling Down Sling Blade

Browniewin

So many good movies, hard to chose. First time I saw him was in To Kill a Mocking Bird and without any lines of dialogue he made a lasting impression. He was excellent as The Great Santini. For his part in Tender Mercies he received and Academy Award. Deep Impact is a disaster movie with heart. Let's face it, anything he is in is worth watching, but I love the movie Open Range.

Toc

The fact Network isn't winning also aptly describes the state of our world today, lol.

Toc

Answer to the OP's question: because you're living in the dopey 21st century. You're living among the silliest, dopiest, shallowest, most vapid populace who have ever drawn breath. And most of that populace have the taste of 11-year old boys. (except when I was 11, I had much better taste,......that's actually around the time I saw Network! Was blown away.) Imagine being weaned on the garbage mainstream of the 80s and 90s, whew. Amazing.

Toc

That's completley wrong. Who told you that? There were tons of successful miniseries before Lonesome Dove. Lonseome Dove wasn't even that inordinately successful. Never heard of Roots? Hell, never heard of I, Claudius? I, Claudius makes Lonesome Dove look like a comic book. You're acting like Lonesome Dove happened and suddenly they started making "high quality long form storytelling", lol. Hilarious that your frame of reference is Game Of Thrones, Band Of Brothers and True Detective. Don't get me wrong: Lonesome Dove is great, he's great in it, and it was indeed his favorite role. But it doesn't need to be overhyped with garbage misinformation. It was a well-done series; it wasn't the beginning of anything.

Roy Wright

You delete your comment? Laughing at me thinking Natural would probably win because when I looked at first it was way ahead. Laughing at that post and yet a crap movie like deep impact is actually winning.

Toc

Best movie on the poll, by a mile.

Lana Gorgeous

The Apostle and the Great Santini are the best of the list, they might not get huge votes but you'll love ❤️ them. Whether you watch them on your channel or not please watch them. You won't regret it I promise you.

UnlicensedOkie

Days of Thunder and Secondhand Lions are both awesome. If I could pick one, I’d pick Secondhand Lions

Paul Cox

Even though Duvall's role in The Natural is a minor one, sad to see it underperform here with baseball season around the corner.

Paul Cox

Not entirely by us. There are some here I've never seen and wouldn't even have thought to suggest lol

Paul Cox

Network and Deep Impact are in contention for the win, though, so I'm definitely not complaining.

Paul Cox

Notably, both Network and Deep Impact (along with so many others in his filmography and in this very poll) are true ensemble pieces. He was the perfect team player.

Warren H

Jeffrey Katzenberg told me that, although I think it's worth noting that it was on Entertainment Tonight about twenty years ago and I don't think he knew I was watching. ;) He had passed on the Lonesome Dove project while at Disney, despite it being a Pulitzer Prize winning novel, because--at least according to him--the cost (it ended up costing 20 million dollars at the time, about 50-60 million today) of this period piece was considered stupidly, excessively high for television and he assumed they would "lose their ass" on it, because "who watches Westerns anymore?" When it was the second-highest rated miniseries of all time up until that point (second only to Roots, actually) and went on to be nominated for 14 Emma's and won 7, he said he felt like an idiot. Years later, after the success of "Saving Private Ryan", he (then part of the Dreamworks studio along with Spielberg and Hanks) was apparently a major advocate of spending the--at the time--record breaking (turned out to be $125 million) money on the Band of Brothers series, and mentioned Lonesome Dove as part of his evidence that a sprawling period piece with movie-level production values could have real earning potential, even without being in theaters. Roots was truly excellent but it didn't have anyone in it who was a major Hollywood star at the time, other than Lou Gossett Jr., but it was a passion project for him and I think he took a good bit less than his usual salary to do it. In fact, getting Robert Duvall and Danny Glover (and to a lesser extent Tommy Lee Jones who had done movies but also TV) to appear in a television series was extremely unusual, as at the time, movie actors generally wouldn't appear on television as it was considered a lower-tier medium, and also because it didn't pay nearly as much. I mentioned Band of Brothers and the others in my post because they're series that Danial and Sam have watched (at least I'm almost positive they watched GOT), and yes...the tremendous success of Band of Brothers led to bigger and bigger budgets for TV shows, and though more money doesn't of course mean more quality, the industry at large obviously changed its tune on the viability of series. So, yes, perhaps I overstated (recrimination accepted) when I said that those series wouldn't have happened without Lonesome Dove, but I also have a suspicion that Jeffrey Katzenburg, like him or not, might possibly know almost as much about the business as you do. :)

Don

The epitome of 21st century dopiness is online complaining.

Angelfish Luva

I want you to go out there and hit the pace car.. Hit the pace car??.. Hit the pace car!!! what for?!?! You hit every other god damn thing out there, I just want you to be perfect!!!! Days of Thunder!

UnlicensedOkie

John Q would’ve been another good one for this

Birdie Num Num

3 women remains the only Altman film on the channel(won the spin wheel). It seems unlikely we'll ever get another one on the channel, so maybe consider voting for M*A*S*H

penoyer79

deep impact really? ok. Network is ways better.

Sarah Jane

M*A*S*H* is a must-see film, Duvall or not. That, and Slaughterhouse Five (not a Duvall film, just the one that comes to mind when I think of M*A*S*H*).

Birdie Num Num

The Natural was in 2nd place in the last sports film poll. I'm sure it will get on the channel at some point. But not sure Network will get on the channel. Could it win a 70s poll? What other poll would it ever get on?

To Wa

Note to your technical support: The THX1138 button seems to be hidden. The Great Santini is perhaps the Greatest performance by Duvall. And Network is a "drop what you are doing" watch this right now kinda movie!

penoyer79

Looks like Deep Impact is winning for whatever reason. IMO it's one of the weaker movies here. Oh well. But NETWORK is a must watch and very relevant. Hopefully you get to that one too.

Michael Bauer

One of the movies i hope they will react to some day. Maybe better Chances at a Tom Cruise poll.
