Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) First Time Watching! Full Movie Reaction!!

To me, Claire and Owen pausing on allowing the animals to escape comes down to the question of what is most responsible. If the conclusion we have to come to is that Jurassic Park was an irresponsible scientific experiment, does responsibility lie in accepting the consequences for that mistake, or trying to contain the fallout? The tough part is, of course, the animals had no say in being created, so even if one does decide that the responsibility is to contain the fallout for the mistake, that may end poorly for the animals themselves. Fallen Kingdom is interesting because, I think more than any Jurassic Park movie thus far (with the caveat that I have not seen the next two yet), it asks you to empathize with the dinosaurs as creatures. Caring for the creatures is a given, but it is also undeniably true that to allow them to go free in mainland America will have significant consequences for quite a few people, and consequences that neither Claire and Owen can predict. I think it's reasonable for them to hesitate with that responsibility, especially given they're already bearing responsibility for the creatures being in this position at all.

A couple of good sequences but overall pretty poor writing. It's ironic in a franchise taking shots at the fickleness of audiences that in the next few films they amp up the monsters genetically to keep theatre goers buying tickets. As I think Owen said in the last film, dinosaurs are cool enough. That's why I loved The End of Oak Street.

Spoilers?

Both Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom had genetically modified dinosaurs, so not spoilers.

I'm in the minority but ... Fallen Kingdom usually gets a second worst rap of all the Jurassic films but, after watching this film for a number of times, I kinda like it as the best of the Jurassic World films. I appreciate it trying to do something different, instead of copying the originals (like Jurassic World). The first half of the film offers the most "Lost World"-ness of the originals, with many spectacular shots of the volcano exploding, while dinosaurs roar. The second half perhaps less "fantasy" and is more grounded, still offers some impressive camera angles (such as the Indoraptor on the roof of the mansion, framed against the moon, or the amazing tracking shot of the Indoraptor entering Maisie's bedroom). The writing is typical Hollywood blockbuster writing where the plot is subservient to the set-pieces, and the story logic doesn't hold water, nor the clunky exposition of Maisie's background. BUT I'm willing to suspend my disbelief so that we can get to the next set-up. Bayona directs the film with a deft dark fantasy / fairy tale touch (which is his forte, being the director of The Orphanage and A Monster Calls).

A bit late to the reaction, but I don't think it was out of character for Owen and Claire to let the dinosaurs die and it didn't make them unlikeable. Saving the dinosaurs to bring them to a save environment is different from just letting them lose. I think what Maisey did was irresponsible. As hard as it is to let them die, it would have been the right choice imo. Maisey is now responsible for numerous deaths. Great reaction.  Can't wait for the next one.😊
