I can’t help but feel surprised as I get close to the end of the second part of the trial. Specifically when I see a System Message appear in my vision with word from the Quantum Builder himself.
You have received a message from the Quantum Builder.
“My main combat methods should combat to the death be required involve creating powerful natural phenomena and using those phenomena to enhance my attacks. Thereby causing a wave of powerful strikes that cost an enormous amount of energy.
Should you survive these strikes, the battle should be significantly easier. But I do not start using these attacks until I am absolutely certain there is no way to end the battle without bloodshed.
However, I do not think it will come to this.
I wish you luck on your future trials, young one.
Be well.”
Huh.
A genuinely kind Quantum Being.
Who would’ve thought…
Also, what does he mean that he doesn’t think it’ll come to this? Come to what?
To bloodshed?
Doesn’t it have to for me to win?
Another surprise comes in when it feels like the second part of the trial is about to end.
You have received a message from the Quantum Creator.
“Greetings, child.
For you, who has embarked on a perilous journey full of danger, I have aid I wish to grant.
Once you enter my trial, speak with my copy. Do not immediately begin battle.
Explain the situation, and my copy will surely assist you.
I wish you good tidings on your perilous journey.
Sincerely,
The Quantum Creator, Zerilos Veritrey Villa Balm.”
Well that is a very polite letter.
These two Quantum Beings sure are different from the others I’ve met up until now. And did he just say that the copy would actually help me?
Does that mean I don’t actually have to fight the Quantum Creator?
That would be nice. But I kind of have my doubts about it.
Still, I’ll try what he said first and see if it works regardless.
With that in mind, I smoothly transition to the third and final phase of the Quantum Creator’s trial. Where I find myself in another empty space with no galaxy created yet, and the Quantum Builder floating not far away from me.
“Will you back down?” the Quantum Builder asks, looking incredibly calm as he does so.
I shake my head and state, “Sorry, but I need to kill you to pass this trial.”
The Builder lightly shakes his head and says, “Very well. I shall entertain you until you are tired and wish to leave.”
And just like that, the two of us begin to clash. But, when I think clash, it honestly feels more like he’s just blocking my attacks without striking back. At all.
Almost as if he has no intention of genuinely fighting me.
He never tries to kill me, nor does he do anything beyond just blocking.
I guess he really is a pacifist.
Honestly, this is making me feel bad for attacking him. But I kind of have to if I want to complete the trial.
“Why are you fighting?” the Quantum Builder suddenly asks while appearing far away from my latest attack. “Is it for fame? For glory? Or maybe for someone you care about?”
I blink at his words before I begin to genuinely think about them, briefly halting my attacks as I do so.
Why do I fight?
Hmm.
I don’t really care about fame or glory, that much I know for sure. As for fighting for someone I care about?
That fits, but it’s not all of it. I do want to protect Astrid, Crystal, and even Dad. But they’re all pretty strong and don’t need much protecting.
Other than from the Corrupted One and the corruption in general.
In that sense, I guess I do fight to protect them. To keep these enormous forces from pushing in and killing them while turning the Dimensional Grid into a hell zone.
But it’s more than just that.
Fighting is fun. If it wasn’t enjoyable, I wouldn’t be able to do it all the time.
Of course, some fights are plain annoying. And the actual killing at the end of the battles doesn’t really matter to me.
I have no interest in going around killing people, after all.
Still. Is fighting what I actually want to do?
Not really. I’d rather laze around reading books and watching TV all day.
So why do I do it?
“I fight to end the threats to the universe,” I eventually settle on an answer. “Because those threats pose a risk to my family, and to my relaxation time.”
“And no one else can do this? No one else can face these threats?” the Quantum Builder asks without changing his expression.
I shake my head and answer, “I don’t know. But even if there is someone else, I don’t like the idea of sitting around and waiting when something could ruin my relaxation time. I fight to bring myself peace of mind. To become stronger than anyone else so that no one can bother me or threaten my family again.”
Because it sucks when you’re interrupted mid-TV show, or mid-book.
Am I actually a lazy person?
Maybe?
No idea.
Then again, I’ve always been the type to put in overwhelming amounts of work at the start of something to make things easier on me later on. Far more work than I ever needed to put in at the start.
The Quantum Builder starts to chuckle, surprising me for a moment. Then his chuckle turns into a full-on belly laugh.
Uh, am I missing something here? What part of what I just said was funny?
Eventually he stops laughing and asks, “Do you wish to use your power to take over the universe and Quantum Realm?”
I make a face at that as I answer, “No way. Sounds like a pain.”
The Quantum Builder smiles a genuinely pleased smile before stating, “You pass. I do not know what threat you are facing, but I do not sense any lies in you.”
Pass? Pass what?
All of a sudden, the Quantum Builder vanishes from his spot before appearing in front of me again. Then he grabs my hand with my scythe and stabs it directly into his chest, making my eyes widen in shock.
What the hell?!
“Go and achieve your goals with my blessing, young one,” the Quantum Builder declares as his body begins to glitch apart. All the way until his form completely shatters.
Leaving me returning to the mausoleum, clearing the trial in my first attempt for the first time.
No, seriously.
What just happened?
