At the Edge of the Universe
The Quantum Ruler frowns as he continues wiping out the corrupted creatures flooding out of the cracks in the universe’s edge. Both angry and regretful about how it’s come down to this.
His brother, the former Quantum Reaper before Alexia, was a good older brother. Even if he didn’t show it often, he would always take on tasks for the Ruler before the Ruler even knew those tasks needed to be done. And he would complete them without a word.
He even tried to deal with the crack in the universe without telling the Ruler. But the Ruler stepped in personally to handle it all thanks to the Quantum Vanguard’s actions making him aware of the situation before his brother could act on his own.
And yet, now the Ruler is beginning to wonder if maybe he should’ve left his brother to act.
His brother has always been stronger than him. Due to that, a small corner of the Ruler’s mind can’t help but wonder what would have happened if the Ruler wasn’t there. If he didn’t need his brother to save him at the last minute.
Of course, logically the Ruler knows full well that his brother never would’ve been able to destroy the egg without his and the Vanguard’s help. Not with the corrupted bugs that the Ruler is currently killing filling the outside of the universe. They would’ve easily stopped his brother from dealing with the egg.
No, the Ruler is sure the situation would’ve been even worse. The bugs would likely have caused the egg’s release of the corruption even sooner, and his brother would’ve been corrupted even more severely than he was.
But that doesn’t change the guilt the Ruler feels over the entire situation.
This is the first time he’s thinking this clearly, and in his own personality, in a very long time. And yet, all he can think about is guilt, with hints of appreciation mixed in.
Appreciation for the sacrifice his brother made for him.
And appreciation for the work Alexia put in to snap him out and restore him to his sanity.
Also guilt for having to be saved by the two in the first place, and for failing to protect the Universe’s Will.
These thoughts fill his already jumbled mind as he slaughters the corrupted creatures, making sure they don’t spread their corruption into the universe as much as possible. And ever since he started, the corruption that had already spread into the universe has seen a significant decline.
The Quantum Beings are all performing well. It’s troublesome that we lost the Balancer and Enforcer, but they dug their own graves.
A part of the Ruler wonders if he should try to recreate a new Balancer and Enforcer, but then he remembers that he isn’t quite capable of that without the assistance of the Universe’s Will.
It might be possible that someone could inherit their powers through the System someday, but he is past the time where he is capable of creating new ones to fill the role himself. And even if he could, it would weaken him for a time. And now is not a time for him to be weakened.
He needs to be at his best to handle the corruption, and the Corrupted One who will soon make his reappearance.
So he continues doing what he can to deal with this situation. He fights the corrupted bugs trying to enter the universe alongside the Vanguard, he helps clean up any corruption that spreads, fixes galaxies that have been corrupted, and trains Alexia in her Energy Manipulation. All at the same time.
Meanwhile he sees Alexia constantly hunting all of the corrupted creatures she can find and gradually raising both her level, and the level of her skills. All the way until the System begins to help them as well, pleasantly surprising the Ruler in the process.
It begins to give out quests to Alexia with token rewards made purely of the Universe’s energy that will instantly upgrade her skills.
Of course, he can tell at a glance just from the first token she receives after she completes a quest to kill a certain number of Corruptors that the token isn’t as complete as a full token. It’s clearly one made with exactly enough energy to bring a skill from the halfway point of Tier 5 that they’re at to Ascendant Tier.
But it doesn’t matter to the Ruler one bit that the System is only giving out the energy necessary. In fact, he is happy it is helping at all. And if it is helping, then it is best for it to give just what it has to give instead of giving an excessive amount for no reason.
The Ruler has never fully understood the System, much less now, after the System has taken what was left of the Universe’s Core’s power. All he knows about it is that it was created by his son for the express purpose of managing the mortals and their growth, while also giving them additional paths to power. And then, when the Reset happened, he lost his control over the System and it fully claimed that control for itself. Making it completely autonomous.
But, as long as the System assists in defending the universe from the corruption, that is all that matters for now. He can figure out what to do with the System once the threat has been resolved.
The Ruler briefly glances back at screens that appear of Alexia as she eliminates more Corruptors for her quests. Then he turns his full attention to the cracks in the universe when he feels a wave of corrupted energy beginning to surge inside.
It looks like time is truly running out. I hope Alexia can grow fast enough.
He grits his teeth while wiping out more corrupted creatures and spreading his own energy to catch and erase as much of the surging corrupted energy as possible.
Otherwise everything will come to an end.
