NathanYear 2853 | Month 6 | Day 26
The host moves on from talking about me to talk about the other four Class SS and pseudo Class SS magicians introduced right before me. With Crimson getting the most attention by far out of them.
And when he finishes with each of the Class S magicians’ introductions, he spreads both arms to his sides and declares, “We will now see who is the current most powerful magician on the planet! Let us reveal the brackets!”
Following his words, a large hologram appears with dozens of squares and lines connecting them in the form of tournament brackets. With around one hundred and forty-eight total squares, and with some of the future rounds having multiple magicians fighting each other in a round that is clearly not one versus one. But all of the squares are empty right now.
That doesn’t last long, though, as they begin to fill in one by one.
My eyes narrow at the squares while searching for my own name. Before mine appears, I end up finding the Class SS magicians and the pseudo Class SS magician on the brackets. Where none of them are faced against each other.
Crimson is put against some random Class S magician from a weaker nation. Which has said Class S magician looking like his entire world just collapsed when I look at him.
The Spirit Ruler will be facing a stronger Class S magician from the Melcians. Who also doesn’t seem too pleased about the matchup.
Then the Lord of Twilight gets paired with a Class S magician who is also a Warrior, no doubt the person who managed to get one of those injections from the auction. So their battle will be interesting. And the crowd seems excited too.
After Twilight, the Mage of Storms is put up against one of the older and more powerful Class S magicians. And his opponent actually looks confident that they might be able to beat the Mage of Storms.
I’m not quite so sure they’ll be able to do that, but who knows.
Blade also comments on some of the brackets as the magicians are being revealed. But not all of them. Only the bigger matches with major competitors in them.
Eventually my name is revealed in the very last square of the brackets.
“And the last matchup of the first round will be between the Undying Magician and the Holy Mage!” Blade roars amidst the audience’s own cheers. “Will the Holy Mage be able to take down the Undying Magician with her light magic?! Or will she be defeated by the immortal?! You will all have to wait and see!”
The audience grows even louder, but Blade barely even pauses as he continues, wrapping up the opening ceremonies, “All of the brackets have now been revealed! So let us get this Arcane Crown underway! The first bracket to compete in the tournament will be the Class C magicians bracket, and it will take place tomorrow morning at nine AM sharp! Make sure you show up!”
After hearing his closing statement, I immediately teleport off the stage again. Going straight back to my room in the palace.
I go ahead and look at the internet to see what peoples’ reactions to the opening ceremonies are. And the first thing I find are a bunch of betting pools opening up one after another.
Bets on who will win between the Spirit Ruler and the Lord of Twilight. Bets on who will win between the Mage of Storms and the Lord of Twilight. Bets on who will win between the Mage of Storms and the Spirit Ruler. And even bets on who will win between me and one of them.
There are a lot of bets…
Both about battles already set in the brackets, and battles that haven’t even arrived yet. Ones that would end up later on in the tournament after they win the early matches.
There are also bets for each one of my matches in the brackets, with the majority of the votes in them actually being on the side of my opponents. Not me. Albeit not by a large margin.
That’s a little disappointing, but not all that surprising.
My immortality is being restricted, after all. So my biggest advantage in their eyes is limited. And my experience as a magician is significantly lower than any of my opponents.
All of them have been magicians learning their affinities and spells for at least a decade or two. Meanwhile I’ve only been learning magic for a few years total.
Even if I have a large physical advantage, the magicians in the outside world far from the Eternal Continents have experience facing Warriors. So the physical advantage isn’t as big here.
To top all of that off, my first opponent uses light affinity magic. Specifically holy type magic, which has an advantage against undead types. Like vampires.
Still. Despite that, around forty percent of the bets are still in my favor for the first round. So there are still a lot of bets on me winning each of the matches.
As for the second round? The percentage of bets on me rise to forty-six percent. Likely because they don’t have holy magic like my first round opponent.
The third round has forty-seven percent of bets being on me, and the fourth round has a seventy-percent chance because it’s not a one on one round. Since the fourth round is different with several magicians participating in free-for-alls where two of them are eliminated and the rest proceed to the next round.
Apparently they have more confidence in me winning when participating in a free-for-all.
Anyway, I go ahead and dump a bunch of credits on me winning up through to the fourth round. Because free money is free money.
And I don’t plan on losing.
A faint smile spreads across my face at the thought of getting a bunch of free money just from winning matches.
After making my bets, I look through the rest of the bets for a few minutes before going to continue my experiments for a bit. Then I spend some time training with my sword.
I need to make sure my swordsmanship isn’t rusty since my immortality will be limited.
