Well, well, it looks like our Patreon members are cultivated individuals who wish to read something intellectually stimulating and informative hence, it is with great pleasure that I announce, "Buddhism: A Journey through History" by Donald Lopez Jr. as our next Required Reading!

It's a hefty book, but probably the last one you need to read to get a good grasp of Buddhism's historical contours and sociecological activity through the ages.

Matt is especially overjoyed about the result. For those new to the system: we will finish reading the book within a month or so, then record and post our review/discussion, and then schedule a follow-up chat aimed at facilitating Patreon members' opinions! So that will be in early July! This is a part of the Decoding Academia series so it's for those at Revolutionary Genius and above.

Great job again, everyone on making a wise selection!

Maybe this is my own snobbery showing here, but doesn't that image make it look like a self-published book? Though if it was, it would probably be Buddhism: A Joruney Through History.

This book is $70...Maybe Chris already owns a copy?

It's actually quite smooth, both in writing, and if you're listening to the audiobook, in sound. There's one mammoth chapter at the beginning, followed by some small chapters. As far as I can tell, this is a secular look at Buddhism history, which, surprisingly, is full of many twists and turns.

This book needs more recipies.

Well. I guess I’d better shell out some money for Buddhism. I see how these spiritual rackets go. Next thing you know I’ll have shaved hair, be wearing saffron robes, and inhaling incense while chanting Japanese words.

US$40 from my local independent bookstore.

For what amounts to a college textbook in religion, it is one of the better ones. If I ever have to teach a class on Buddhism I might use it.

Um... waiving a hand from the back row: Y'all mean early July, right? Early June starts in less than a week... (just checking my understanding of the timeline and key waypoints)

Kyle Dun

I'm waiting for my free audio book in 9 days for this lol.

Melinda

What if I've forgotten what sort of genius I am?

"When we speak about disappearance of Buddhism in India, what do we mean by "disappearance" and what do we mean by "Buddhism"?"

Lucy

I bought the book. Tomorrow I may open it.

Sam Stephenson

I read this guy for some class and remember it being pretty great

I’m really enjoying this book so far, but I’m also getting a little impatient. When do we get to the part about cod?
