In this special Patreon interview edition of Decoding the Gurus, the hosts descend into the world of venture capitalism by speaking with Adam Sher, a kind Patreon member and an expert in private equity! This is a follow-up of sorts to the All-In episode and might be a bit technical at times as Adam covers the fundamentals of private equity versus public markets, the complexities of venture capital, distinctions between traditional and tech-focused venture capital, and insights into the Silicon Valley ecosystem. As you might expect the conversation also examines the 'besties' from the 'All In' podcast, their backgrounds, investment successes, and controversies. One for the quants!

Anyway to release this just as audio?

Thanks, Adam. Awesome. But I don’t think I’ll be acing the final on this one! No wonder I’m poor.

Damien

Brilliant, we're being spoiled recently! 👊

Thank you Adam, this is really interesting! A bit of a walk down memory lane for me. I worked in tech in the Bay Area for about 4 years in 1998-2001 (as a grunt not as an investor) when the Internet company boom was in full swing. I started at a PR firm that specialized in internet startups, then I went in-house to a now-defunct business magazine that covered tech (we did a splashy cover story of Enron lol) and then I went to do in-house PR and comms for a medium-sized tech firm that was preparing to go through an IPO (your talking about the pre-IPO quiet period made me think of that experience)). Then of course everything spectacularly crashed and burned and I got laid off in 2001, after which I completely changed careers. I never had any direct interaction with the elite venture capitalists but there was definitely a mythos around them.

I’m looking forward to this!

So does each patreon subscriber get their own episode on their area of expertise? I can't wait to share my exclusive method for walking one's cat on a leash. Kidding Adam I'm excited to hear this!

All in was cancelled this week So they can get their messaging together in the wake of trump musk I’m sure 🤔

This was excellent! Thank you for being clear and not condescending! I worked for the Securities Industry Association from 2000-2005. Right before the collapse — before feds came in to save it.
