In this special Patreon interview edition of Decoding the Gurus, the hosts descend into the world of venture capitalism by speaking with Adam Sher, a kind Patreon member and an expert in private equity! This is a follow-up of sorts to the All-In episode and may be a bit technical at times, as Adam covers the fundamentals of private equity versus public markets, the complexities of venture capital, the distinctions between traditional and tech-focused venture capital, and offers insights into the Silicon Valley ecosystem. As you might expect, the conversation also examines the 'besties' from the 'All In' podcast, their backgrounds, investment successes, and controversies. One for the quants!

This is great, Adam! If I’d known your expertise I would have been more sycophantic!!

This was interesting, thank you for doing it! I think, if you create a product that competes with an existing product from a company that has a reasonable amount of disposable cash, you can get yourself bought quite easily. Before Thomson divested itself of its science portfolio to buy Reuters, they’d happily buy up any challenger company and shutter it, just to make the competition go away.

I’m only about 20 minutes in, but I’m getting annoyed with Adam’s benevolent view of the banking industry and the housing crisis, as well as venture capital in general.

Adam, that was great. You helped my understanding of the venture ecosystem and now I understand these guys so much better. Thanks so much for taking the time.
